Debate Professor Shad Saleem Faruqi

by S.Thayaparan @www.malaysiakini.com

COMMENT | “Iksim propounds the view that Islam does not come under the jurisdiction of any political power. According to it, religious enforcement authorities come under the patronage of the Sultans, not state governments. This is a remarkable vision of an autonomous, almost all-powerful, religious elite that is like a state within a state.” – Shad Saleem Faruqi

I have often referenced Pprofessor Shad Saleem Faruqi’s articles in my articles, sometimes agreeing; sometimes disagreeing with what he writes.

If someone were to tell me that Shad’s intention in anything he ever wrote was to insult or breach the peace, I would burst out in hysterical laughter. This academic (unlike this writer) has never written a polemic, as far as I can tell. In addition, I have probably read everything this man has written.

If you have not read the article, that has got Iksim all in a rage, I suggest that you read it and determine if anything in that article warrants the state security apparatus “probing” this academic under section 504 of the Penal code.

Instead of engaging intellectually with Shad, Iksim resorted to the Islamists playbook and issued a public statement claiming that Faruqi and the G25 (Noor Farida Ariffin specifically) were attempting to cause racial disharmony and subverting the Islamic agenda as enshrined in the Federal Constitution. You can read the full statement here but the relevant passage is this:

In the quote that begins this piece, the good professor, questions Iksim’s perspective that Islam does not come under the purview of any political power likening such a perspective to a “state within a state.”

If you read the press statement and consider Iksim’s rationale for going after Shad and the G25, you would come to the realisation that their “unique” interpretation of the Malaysian constitution and of Islam in general, is exactly the “state within a state” idea that Shad alludes to in the quote I referenced.

Have you noticed that Islamists always claim that the people they target are attempting to cause tension amongst the various ethnic groups here in Malaysia? Is there any evidence of this? Are non-Muslims threatened or provoked by what people targeted by groups like Iksim say and do? I would argue that the only people threatened or provoked are the Islamist and the reason why they are threatened is that their views or beliefs are challenged.

Furthermore, Iksim has not rebutted the points raised in Shad’s article. They have not claimed that what he wrote was false or fallacious. They have not denied the agenda he attributes to them. What they have done, is use the state to sanction the professor and intimidate any others who subscribe to his views.

Indeed by their own admission (as quoted by Shad referencing their March 28 booklet), – “secularism, liberalism and cultural diversity are elements that will undermine the Islamic agenda and destroy the country’s sovereignty”.

In other words, according to Iksim, everything that non-Muslims value and probably a majority of Muslims are detrimental to the Islamic agenda in this country. Therefore, when Umno potentates talk of cultural diversity and protecting the faiths of non-Muslims, this is detrimental to the Islamic agenda of this country.

When UMNO potentates talk about the rich cultural diversity and the need to respect different cultures as envisioned by the founders of this country and which is great for tourism, this is detrimental to the Islamic agenda of the country.

When “liberalism” redefined as “moderation” – Islamic or otherwise – is bandied about as the foundation for economic, social and religious success by the establishment, this undermines the Islamic agenda in this country.

And you know what, they are correct. If you believe in the kind of Islam they believe in and the kind of Islam that the House of Saud, is slowly and painfully attempting to reject, all these concepts are detrimental to turning this country into an Islamic state.

An Islamic state where the primacy of syariah law and the submission of Muslims and non-Muslims to a theocratic hegemon is the natural order of things which is the desired state – and state of being – of Islamists like Iksim.

‘Islamists not interested in debate’

A couple of months ago, the crypto-fascists got their knickers in a twist when I wrote that, liberalism is only a threat to the kind of Islam tyrants preach – “Those people who fear ‘liberalism’ however they define it, in reality, fear the loss of power when empowered societies choose alternatives. So yes, liberalism is a threat to the kind of Islam they preach. Mind you they may actually win in a ‘fair’ democratic contest because that is one of the perils of democracy. Beyond institutional safeguards, democracy is a risky endeavour, but I would take it to anything these Islamists have to offer.”

While Shad Faruqi has invited them to debate and challenge his views, the reality is that Islamists are not interested in debate or discussion. Their only interest is submission. This is why they have no need for freedom of speech and expression.

There is enough empirical evidence to demonstrate that such concepts are anathema to the kind of Islam they wish to promulgate.

In many of my articles where I discuss the numerous provocations of the state-sanctioned Islam in the private and public lives of non-Muslims in Malaysia, I have always made it clear that the people feeling the brunt of a state-sanctioned religion is the majority, Malay Muslim population.

I have also made it clear, that Malay Muslim public intellectuals, academics and writers, are at the mercy of the state conspiring with various Islamists groups – sub rosa and overt – who sanction behaviour that they and they alone determine to be a threat to the state sanctioned religion.

Ultimately, Siti Kassim (will someone elect her already) has the right of it, when in her Facebook page, she wrote: “We must stand with Professor Shad Faruqi. We should never allow these extremists group taking over our country. Never. Never. Never.”

  1. When Malays in Malaysia, especially the leaders, politicians and senior civil servants, including the people in departments that look after Islam and the interests of Muslims such as JAKIM, IKSIM and the like have become Malay Islam i.e. Malay’ised’ Islam or Islam Melayu (Islam diMelayukan) and they are no more Islam Malays i.e. Islam’iseWhen Malays in Malaysia, especially the leaders, politicians and senior civil servants are Malay Islam i.e. Malay’ised’ Islam or Islam Melayu (Islam diMelayukan) and they are no more Islam Malays i.e. Islam’ised Malays or Melayu Islam i.e. Melayu yang telah diIslamkan; they no longer follow the Al – Qur’an and the Sunnah. They switch off their intellectual thinking skills and abilities and they will go after everyone who says things that they consider as contrary to Islamic beliefs that are based on their interpretations. That’s how they treat the good professor’s views. However, for the author, S Thayaparan, to use Siti Kasim’s post on her facebook timeline to rebut IKSIM’s threat is insensitive on his part as Siti Kasim is not the person for anyone to use as a defender of Islam and/or Muslims as she has been seen, known and proven to have done things and practises that are unIslamic.

  2. Jabtan Ugama Islam Malaysia , JANGAN MENINDAS Cendekiawan saperti Prof Shad Salem Faruqi , tidak baik…Merugi kan ” Islam ” seluruh Dunia…. –

He is a highly revered Scholar in matters of Philosophical Islam , with great depth in knowledge & thoughts , whether in the secular mode or even concerning spirituality : he is greatly respected by both Muslims & Non-muslims , very much like the other learned Scholar Prof. Hashim Kamali….. –

    JANGAN…..JANGAN …..JANGAN ( Tuhan Murqa ‘ ) TIDAK BAIK ! ! !

  3. ” We must stand with Professor Shad Farqui. We must never allow these extremist groups to take over the country. Never , never , never. ” Siti Kassim

Yes – never should these insidious , shallow minded asses be allowed to take this country in the direction of disaster. This is the preserve or domain of our politicians.

  4. The thing is most Malays do not feel any discomfort in the persecution of non-conservative Islamic intellectual. Islam is a source of solace, pride, identity for most Malay Muslim and the establishment, the more conservative, seems the correct one.

The Islamic right do not believe in debate. Listen to Zakir Naik, every public discussion is nothing more twist and turn to spin sweeping long list of liners that cover every angle not real discussion.

  5. I read the Cow twenty years ago. This … I couldn’t quite get it. Today, I read this again, and see this incident, I still see not how to read this, yet it still seems to be relevant in this subject matter. What is the Cow and who are the You?

[2.84] And when We made a covenant with you: You shall not shed your blood and you shall not turn your people out of your cities; then you gave a promise while you witnessed.
[2.85] Yet you it is who slay your people and turn a party from among you out of their homes, backing each other up against them unlawfully and exceeding the limits; and if they should come to you, as captives you would ransom them– while their very turning out was unlawful for you

  6. Ma’af , Jangan Menindas Ilmu’an : Within about 600 years after Advent of our noble Prophet , it was the Muslims who PIONEERED into the world of matter , and many Islamic Scholars like Ibnu’ Sina, Ibnu Batuth , Ibnu Khaldun , yg menyelideki perkara Saintifik dan Teknologi ….. Pity , the scientific culture ( by Muslims ) lasted ONLY for 600 years , and the ‘spirit ‘ of learning in the Sciences died down. The Westerners took over ….. – Why ? Answer : Muslim scientists were SUPPRESSED by authorities , because it appeared they feared the advances in the Sciences , which the Syariah considered as being against ‘ Islam ‘ ….. –

Illustration : In the olden times, for Muslims to perform the Haj Pilgrimage ( Mecca ), the Sailing vessels ( kapal layar ) took more than 3 months , converging from all directions……Then when Western scientists developed the Steam engine , it took a mere three (3) weeks to converge on the holy land…. ( Scientific , No ? ) –

Today , the jet=flight takes ONLY 8-10 hours to reach from all sides of the world to that destination …..

ASK …..Sir Isaac Newton who discovered the Jet propulsion , (based on the third law of motion ) how their team developed from the Scientific fact of ” equal & opposite force of law of motion ” , Pilgrims can reach ONLY 8-10 hours…. ! ! –

Because, Muslims ( not Islam ) suppress , or oppress Islamic Scientific thoughts ….

  7. ‘ Siti Kasim is not the person for anyone to use as a defender of Islam and/or Muslims as she has been seen, known and proven to have done things and practises that are unIslamic ‘ – hak55.

I think this is very unfair to Siti. To me she is a true Muslim and a great Malay. Look at the work she does to defend powerless, voiceless and poor minority groups eg. Orang Asli/Melayu tulin.

Most Malay/Muslims religious/political leaders think they have a private line to Allah/God and only they know what is islamic and what’s not, based on what their personal interpretation of the holy book for narrow and divisive political purposes.

With decades of bad and corrupt political leadership, many Malay/Muslim are plainly hypocrite…….’ badan manusia kepala lembu ‘.

  8. PS .
why use administrative & political apparatus of State, to dominate the Intellectuals who pioneered in the sciences , such that people could travel around the globe in 24 hours , rather than by sailing ships that takes six months….? ? You are using coercive force to suppress , rather than using ‘brains ‘ to CONVINCE people ?

Ini perkara Mutta’shabbih , unto befirkir bersama. TK

  10. How many Agencies focussing on Kemajuan Islam do you need in Malaysia? Somehow their roles and goals seem to overlap each other and their efforts are spent on frivilous issues instead of concentrating on making Islam progressive and handling social issues for the betterment of the ummah. Then we have the Ulamaks and the Muftis Council which are not working in concert and often issuing conflicting fatwas.
All these agencies are created to ensure jobs for the graduates in Islamic Studies who otherwise will find themselves unemployable. They should all be folded and absorbed under one department. No empire building.

  11. @ sotong, my admiration for your second & third paras…..’sotong ‘ denotes a person of many tentacles , which means ‘ far reaching ‘ – please allow me to add a little , the slightly unconventional way our religious chendikiawan , who can be narrow-minded ! – may i ? – i’ve learnt the hard way :

” this concept of the ” Mukmin ” , which pertains to the ‘heart ‘ (internal ) , my view is that a Mukmin CAN apply to any person of a different Faith also ( like a Christian man being good in the heart ) , not merely confined to Muslims. Muslim / Islam concerns the OUTER-MOST perimeter of the ‘ circle ‘ , so the Mukmin is ‘higher ‘ in learning…..& in faith (iman ) …..
(hope no one feels slighted )
