Your Weekend Entertainment: With P. Ramlee and Saloma

Dr KamsiahDr Kamsiah and I think that for this weekend we should play songs by Malaysia’s incomparable singing couple Tan Sri P. Ramlee and Puan Sri Saloma.

Enough has been said and written about both Penang born Ramlee and his special lady from Singapore that we both have nothing new to add except to say that there is yet another couple from the entertainment industry in Malaysia who can replace them. Duets are, in fact, not the same without them.

Listen to their voices and may these tunes bring back memories of what used to be as backdrop to what is happening now. There is a strong rumour that GE-13 will be held soon and before the heavy campaign and media blitz begin, we must enjoy the songs of Ramlee and Saloma.–Dr. Kamsiah and Din Merican

  1. I love this couple for their true self and love story. Simply astonishing. More need to be done to bring the nostalgia duo to present. I use to go crazy to watch the legends movie in my younger days. A true Malay legend but sad he was not given appropriate attention. There will never be a replacement to P.Ramlee. He was the BEST in his field.

    P. Ramlee got his Tan Sriship after his death. It took a Penang born Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Tan Sri Elyas Omar to name a major street in Kuala Lumpur in honour of this versatile talent. When alive he was neglected by our country. He was hanging around Chow Kit Road doing practically nothing.–Din Merican

  2. The duet are such that when you close your eyes, its as if they are singing next to you ………. singers these days have metallic throats. Sharifah Aini has good voice too. She always sing for Tun Ismail at PNB yearly event when he was around. Some occasions Ahmad Daud also joined it. Some jokers said he likes her chestful of songs.

  3. Gangnam, Dato? Er.., thanks, but no thanks.
Gangnam actually means south of the river in Korean, and is pronounced as Jiangnan or south river in Chinese. Any political entity that overuses it will find themselves going south!

Anyway for old ducks like us, we have a real chance of going back to where we belong and getting back what’s rightfully ours, as the poster of this you-tube so aptly puts it. Here’s to Us:

  4. Yes US is my kampong, I do live in a kampong.

btw on my last trip home I visited the late P. Ramlee’s and Saloma’s grave at Tanah Perkuburan Islam Jalan Ampang. Unlike the graves of superstars in the west, these 2 graves though well kept remain relatively “terbiar” no signs of fans leaving flowers or saying a prayer. In life as in death P. Ramlee remains unappreciated save the naming of a road and a small rundown theater in KL. The National Theater should at least have an auditorium named after him. FINAS should also take over the P. Ramlee theater and make it the theater of choice for all Opening or debut, somewhat like the Kodak Theater or Nokia Theater where major award ceremonies are held.

    Semper Fi,

Penang should do something significant in his honour. After all, he was born and educated (Penang Free School) in Penang If Lim Guan Eng starts this then the Federal Government has no choice but to follow. The time to do that is NOW.–Din Merican

  5. Dato Din,
Bean can’t do the Gangnam Kampong Style. Bean is in mourning as he lost his dear mom recently.
Bean, here’s something to remember your mom

  6. Pos Malaysia should have stamps featuring P. Ramlee and Saloma just like the US where a new issue feature Rosa Parks, the African American lady that refuses to give up her seat on a bus for a white man. Had Rosa been alive she would be 100 years old this month.
