Remembering Broery Marantika of Indonesia

For this weekend’s entertainment, we have chosen to remember Broery Marantika, Indonesia’s crooner par excellence.

Broery is arguably the best of his generation, and none can come near him. He has a unique voice and great persona making him the most popular entertainer  both in Indonesia and Malaysia and beyond. He sings with passion. Who will succeed him? We think Harvey Malaiholo is a possibility.

Please listen to Broery and Harvey and relax. Set aside our cares and our political banter and take a well deserved break.–Dr. Kamsiah and Din Merican

There is no such thing, Mr.Bean. It is all fable and imagination– Kamsiah

  2. Dr Kam is seen here in a pensive mood. What have you done, Dato?

Huh? You mean you want to keep the cake and eat it at the same time? Or do you mean Dato is a shipwreck not just a train wreck?? You gottat do something about that Dato.

  4. DrKam,

Give Dato to me for one hour. And like dough I will knead him, pull, stretch him, bend him to shape and he will be good as new. What say you Pak Semper?

  5. Sorry Dato, busy wrestling with Malaysian bureaucracy here and juggling with the holidays, Thanksgiving followed by Deepavali and Maal Hijrah and next will be Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year before anything gets done.

    Here’s my choice

  6. Aiyoh Datuk… mana boleh lupakan klasik Broery ni….

Broery Marantika & Dewi Yull : Jangan Ada Dusta Diantara Kita (HQ Audio)

  7. Alamak Dato, only Semper Fi aje ke?? my choice tak nak ke??? Anyway gurau aje, you two are a classic couple, wishing I could too, well as Mr Bean mention Brother Broery, most if not all his songs are my Fav, but the one that haunts me is Kasih, so very well sung by Hetty Koes Endang, but with Broery husky voice it chills me to the bones…Malam ini Kasih….daa..daa.. I would like to propose that you sing this song to your darling wife……jgn marah Dato,sincerely..fantastic lyrics..Oouch!!

  8. DrKam sings Dato to sleep with his favorite lullaby – jazzy rendition of a ’60s classic Whiter Shades of Pale. You guys can eat your heart out.

  9. I am an ardent fan of the late Broery Marantika, Dato, and I love his renditions of Jatuh Cinta, Widuri and the various duets with Sharifah Aini including Hapuslah Air Matamu… I was shocked at his passing but managed to visit his grave twice with fellow Indonesian friends… really sad we didn’t get to say goodbye and I felt so bad not knowing he was very sick despite being on the phone with him just weeks before his passing… his family returned a Nikon F3 camera I gave him in the late 80s as he had requested it be returned to me when he passes on with a special handwritten note…. I have the full collection of records by Pak Broery…

  10. Dear Semper Fi, thank you very much, forgot about that version by Ermi actually, which is more jazzy.Thanks. To Greenbug, you have been so fortunate to have befriended the late Pak Broery. To Mr Bean, tks but No tks,No visit to Bendover Singh,am sure he knows how to use his fingers.Listening to Alley Cats reminded me of my close friend the late Loga, those jamming days at Carmen’s Inn,then Gypsy Caravan, Rasa Sayang Hotel, great days, they use to call me Anak Hantu…wow how the years pass me by.

  11. Lok1 reminds me of one close shave I had with female officers of the Vice and Drug Squad in Penang. Lok1 being a police officer he knows the drill. In the early hours of one morning, seated alone in the Merlin Coffee House as it was then known, and high in spirits (12 yr old Scotch whisky), two sleek and beautfiul Malay chics seated behind befriended me and not long after I found myself sprawled in my bed upstairs. The two cool Malay chics wasted no time in rummaging through my personal effects and drawers and cabinets. Having found nothing, they even left me their calling cards and phone numbers to call. They thought I had not noticed what was happening.

At the time this song dominated the airwaves 24/7 and Semper fi was jamming in the basement. We could have crossed paths.

    .

  12. There is something about beautiful Malay chics looking sleek and available who are in real life police officers in mufti (almost always they are from the Vice and Drugs) that attract men – they represent a portent combination of what is cool and dangerous. Right out of the Bond movies.

  13. 20 years difference Bean. We were in Arthur’s Cave in the 60’s while Mariah Carey was still a toddler. The 50’s and 70’s were still the best, no JAWI, no JAKIM, no JAIS and the likes. The 80’s were tame.
Lok1 ouch besides Carmen’s Inn don’t forget Blues Club by Lot 10 and Uncle Chili’s at PJ Hilton.

  14. Mr Bean, when you were acousted in Penang then, my father was the Deputy CPO that’s why they call me Anak Hantu,I was in my teens then, betcha my late Father taught his vice squad them tricks, like father like son maa,and Semper Fi,as far as the 80’s, I was like the furniture of Tin Mines and Cave ( Jln Ampang, below Bowling Alley) and Sam was the owner. My seniors at Tin Mines was the likes of Brothers Kamdin and the late Kochan, with Tiger Lan etc2,frequented Uncle Chili’s later on,yeah right No Forking Jawi,Sunnat,or whatever they call themselves, even them Marine Polis boys were smoking shit while out on their patrol boats,I know I was there. What a time, what a life.
