DPM does a spin on Tunku Abdul Aziz’s Resignation

Syed Jaymal Zahiid@http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim’s acrimonious exit from the DAP proved allegations that the predominantly Chinese opposition party is anti-Malay.

The hardliner UMNO leader said voters can judge for themselves if the allegation is true as the party would not tolerate dissent, especially from a Malay leader.

“DAP was never a Malay party and what happened showed that it would not tolerate dissent, especially if it is coming from the Malay leaders,” he told reporters after opening the Bumiputera Manufacturers and Service Industry Association meeting here.

Tunku Aziz, the DAP’s most senior Malay leader, quit the party on Monday after a fallout with Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng who called the latter’s criticism on poll reform group BERSIH3.0′s plan to hold the April 28 rally “embarrassing”.

The founding President of anti-graft movement Transparency International Malaysia said the rally was encouraging voters to break the law but maintained his endorsement for BERSIH’s demand for poll reform.

His senatorship was subsequently not renewed while he claimed his request to be brought before the party’s disciplinary committee was not entertained and this led to his resignation.

Lim later asked Tunku Aziz to reconsider and was said to have offered him a position in the party’s Penang-based think-tank with a RM50,000 stipend.

Arrogance

The former Bank Negara advisor, however, said he felt insulted by Lim’s “dangling” of the offer and called him “biadap” (uncouth). The DAP Secretary-General then said he would not trade barbs with Tunku Aziz and thanked him for his four-year services in the party.

Muhyiddin joined in the growing chorus of criticism against the DAP and called the party’s leaders hypocrites.

“What happened confirmed our belief that the party which calls itself democratic is not democratic at all.We can see Lim Guan Eng cannot tolerate dissent,” he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that Tunku Aziz’s description of Lim as arrogant after making the offer for his return was consistent with the feedback received on the Penang Chief Minister.

He said the former DAP Vice-Chairman was a highly principled man and the job offer reflected Lim’s disregard for Tunku Aziz’s qualities.“It shows how Lim, to have made such an offer, cares not about his qualities”.

  1. What spin, Dato Din? The reality is that DAP is a chauvinist Chinese party. Malays are only used to boost its image as a party for all. Soon Dato Ariff Sabri (Sakmongkol AK47) and his side kick, Aspan Alias will soon find out that they only have minor roles in the DAP set up. If he can be biadap towards DAP’s Vice-Chairman, Lim Guan Eng will have no qualms about treating them shabbily.

PKR’s Dr. Mansor Othman, Deputy Chief Minister 2, should know since on major issues, Lim Guan Eng rarely consults him. Lim Guan Eng prefers to deal with Anwar Ibrahim who is prepared to compromise with DAP on the economic status of the Penang Malays as long as he will be the Pakatan Prime Minister. DPM is right when he said that Lim Guan Eng is “arrogant”. Makcik, what do you think?

  2. Do we see democracy at play here or what? Spinning the issue is expected especially if its able to discredit one side of the political divide and boost the other.. The opposition will do likewise whenever an opportunity comes a knocking… So what is new? Cheapskates politiking at its height . For this piecemeal of a bolehland delight , credit is given to the damn racist ‘inspired’ Malayans..

  3. This is the role played out by a trojan and it leaves a trail of destruction. Hope fellow Malaysians are matured enough see through this charade with the wide internet coverage but alas only the urban dwellers and not the rural areas where the majority of seats are located. We are now approaching the light at the end of the tunnel and we can reach it as we are on the side of goodness which is inherent in everyone.

  4. Between putting my trust in this Muhyiddin guy and Lim. I will take my chances with Lim anytime. Disgusting. Cheap shot from Muhyiddin.

I don’t know what got to Tunku Aziz but he is sensitive, temperamental and arrogant – predictably so. Those are words used by his colleagues at work to describe the man. I believe he felt insulted and reacted accordingly.

  5. Tunku Aziz’s resignation is a political sham. I can’t believe that Tunku Aziz who was described as a gentleman of high principles should abandon his life work in the blink of an eye. In his years as a crusader he had never blinked an eye over the challenge and difficulties he faced. Even though he was treated as a leper by Mahathir, he carried on with his crusade with gutsiness and feistiness. He was brave enough to go against the trend of “Malays must remain with UMNO”. His dissent against his party was very suspicious. It looks like dissent, sounds like dissent, but it is not dissent. A senior like him should understand that one shouldn’t go against party’s discipline and principles without even letting know the party his dissatisfaction. Everyone was caught by surprise, especially one coming from a persona as Tunku Aziz was a shock. His resignation looked contrived and forced. He seemed to follow a script that was very reminiscent to that of Chandra Muzzafar’s. And the timing was always calculated to coincide when the UMNO regime was facing a crisis. His outburst seemed petty and childish and the vitriol he displayed was not becoming of a gentleman with a cultured upbringing. He appeared to be a nasty street fighter, daring to draw blood. And draw blood he did, with each outburst becoming more and more vicious and cold-bloodedly sadistic. He was programmed to inflict the greatest damage on the party he once held in high esteem.

I am very skeptical. Why does a gentleman break down so easily over something that was understood. Was he bought over? No, I don’t think so. Money can never buy a man of principles. Unless there is a a chink in his armor of invincibility. It is no secret that the Special Branch, the specialist in dirty tricks and counter-intelligence, is under the employ of UMNO. Tunku Aziz could have been targeted and tracked. In today’s world of technology, it’s not difficult to eavesdrop or snoop into one’s cellphone conversation or e-mail. Tunku Aziz could have been entrapped or he could have compromised himself that allowed him with no means of escape. Under the tight grip of the Special Branch, Tunku Aziz had no choice but to “cooperate” with whatever the Special Branch want him to do or say. Tunku Aziz has a very heavy reputation to uphold. Where money could not do the trick, blackmail is the answer. Just watch his every moves: he seemed to be robotic and mechanical and there is an operator behind the scene working on him.

  6. anak-kedah derga

Tepat sekali. Memangpun DAP parti chauvinis Cina. Dua frustco UMNO Sakmongkol dan Aspanpun tak lama lah kat sana.. Paling kuat pun a year or two. Sebenarnya depa bertiga Melayu tak bawa apa-apa ke DAP. Takdepun orang Melayu masuk DAP ikut depa. DAP cuma suka depa ada sebagai window-dressing. Pura-puralah sedih Tunku keluar. yang sebenar tak kisah. Takde Melayu takpe. Janji Cina their loyal voters.

  7. Seperti Tun M cakap, dia tak sepatut masuk DAP. Yalah ramai kita Melayu tanya kenapalah Tunku masuk DAP. At 70 plus pulak. Ingatlah people like him tak minatlah jadi politico. I guess he will retire for good. He has everything. Politics not for him.Actually I thought dia Cina until I saw that tunku prefix.

  8. vsp, janganlah merepek meraban. you look stupid in your quest to spin. Find some other excuses to vent your anger at Tunku. You made the Tunku as a puppet being played by UMNO. Get a life my friend.UMNO is not at all interested in him.

  9. I agree with you, Isa Manteqi. we should move on and real politik should take its place. Tunku Aziz is publicly disgracing himself, practically selling himself wholesale. what an end to someone who wanted to be like an English Gentleman. probably remote controlled and it looks like it is going to backfire on umno-bn.

the prolonged attack on Bersih and especially arse wagging and distributing beef burgers (a typical malaysian tradition which emigrated to Hamburg and later to the US of A) in front of the residence of Ms. Ambiga is doing damage to the integrity of malaysians as a whole. burger actually means citizen in german.
    No Class, lah!

the good Tunku has left DAP with a Huff. Donna Summer has left this World at 63!our residence in this world is so short, lets make the best of it and don’t let them screw us for their luxurious living.

very soon, in the still of the night two U-boats will be leaving the shores of malaysia, destination France. ”watch out you bloody frog leg eating frenchies, you are going to get a taste of your own bloody medicine”.Abdul Razak(?)

sorry to disappoint you Makcik, umno is only interested in intelligent people like you. they are not the least interested in Tunku Aziz but only interested in damaging DAP and PR.

lets see what kind of gentleman Tunku Aziz will be in the future.
    ___________
Reeper, what evidence have you got of Tunku Aziz “practically selling himself wholesale.” As far as I know, he has resigned from DAP and will return to civil society work. Comments on this blog should be well thought out and responsible.–Din Merican

  10. This evergreen is dedicated to Tunku Aziz Tunku Ibrahim who halls from my neck of the woods, a song I’m sure will resonate with him as he sits alone with his gin and tonic.

  11. There was this two page photo in Newsweek of London Mayor Boris Johnson with the caption ‘Beyond London’ implying next stop would be No. 10. But a sherewed observer, Bernard Heavens, (name does suggest some extra powers) noted that in the photo the Mayor was straphanging in a car with an empty seatbehind him, on a stationary train with the doors open at an empty station. This in British politics means end of the line. Rings a bell. So always becareful how you spin.

  12. Who ever said DAP is a Malay party? Who told this clown that? Everytime he opens his mouth, idiotic statements will start to flow out. Better to just keep his mouth shut next time.

Oh btw, it’s great that makcik now has a playmate. Who would ask makcik what he thinks anyway? We all know that he doesn’t think to begin with.

  13. vsp, why does he break down so easily? You are so right to ask that. it is especially Uncharacteristic of Tunku , a man who thinks before he speaks. Maybe after 4 years in that party, he is realising that there is no go between the races?Maybe after four years he finally realises that this hatred and distrust is TOO DAMN DEEP and DAMAGED beyond repair . So he is alarmed, angry, dissappointed and is clearly letting out what he has seen, been through and observed. He is a man angry . Maybe he cannot find the resolution to this massive and REAL problem of race. May be in his heart of hearts he knwos the two will never trust each other. Just maybe he knows what contempt is by both sides. It does not gel with his intelligence and reasoning but in his heart he knows the DAMN distrust exist and can damage. Maybe he thought he could do his bit when he joined only to find out nothing can be done. So may be that is his DESPAIR. That one day, if ever the Govenrment changes and there is such DAMN DEEP hatred , there will be HELL to go thorugh by ALL.

  14. Yes vsp, maybe there is something Tunku is not saying out right. But you can hear it in his words and emotions. Maybe there is something. Delve deeper vsp, dont just speculate. this is not a property market to invest and pull out off. His outburst is DESPAIR.

  15. I saw it when I was watching LGE speak. I saw, the contempt in his words. I was uncomfortable and it reminded me of Umno. You remind me of Umno arrogance too. Speculating and damaging a mans reputation without knowing the entire full story. yet You would the first to jump upa nd down calling for the death of Umno. whats different here? tell me.

WHO should I choose as the next person to govern Malasyia if all have the same trait.? within the spectrum of arrogance? One race says they built Malaysia , so theres their sense of entitlement, the other race sayys the land , soil belongs to them so theres their sense of entitlement.Soboth are worng or are they both right? Do you think they BOTH have a stake in thsi country ? WHO do I and every body else choose. Someone who see sBEYOND all this CRAP. And IT IS CRAP. Thats who.

  16. His wife is Chinese.

So what, Bean? That is not the issue.–Din Merican

    Mr Bean – May 18, 2012 at 1:42 am

That was in response to the statement that he didn’t look Malay but Chinese. Just a statment of fact. All my girlfriends in high school and at university happened to be Chinese. My wife is part Chinese. I agree. That is not the issue and never meant to be an issue. Not with me. It isn’t.

  17. And Tunku like ALL of us are stuck in the middle like the photos so accurately shows. In the middle of this HELL

  18. DAP leadership mishandled Tunku’s ill-timed outburst against Bersih 3.0. Nevertheless, the fact remains that DAP’s ideology is Social Democracy while UMNO’s ideology is semi-fascist racial supremacy.

Interesting characterization of the Opposing sides. How to win the hearts and minds of voters, that will determine who has the legitimacy to govern; the objective is the same (mandate to govern) but they differ in tactics. one uses fear and money to entice the voters while the other promises to deliver results to them. These days, in Malaysia at least, money and fear talk. B.S. is utilised by both sides to appear electable.–Din Merican

  19. Mr. Bean,
How I wish my wife is a Malay from kampung, with all the good traditional characters of sopan santun, manja lembut & sayang sayang values.
    Cheers

  20. Cina Kedah,

I’m glad you followed through with that. It is a good distraction from having to bash anyone this long. You see, there’s a reason why it turned up that way during my undergrad days. The Malay gals around me were very focussed. They had only marriage on their minds; and I do not like being chased. I want to do the chasing. And so when they chased me I ran.

Today I can’t do that no more as they say over here. If I see a police officer in a police car go by and I run, he would give chase. But then when he catches up w/ me, he can only ask me for my name and address. He can’t detain me. Certainly not for taking flight. He cannot pat me down for weapons. He can’t look into my Macy’s shopping bag I may be carrying. Because that would be in violation of my Fourth Amendment rights against unlawful search and seizure. And if he finds a gun it cannot be used in evidence because it would then be the fruit of the poisonous tree.

Yes, I miss all those tradtional values of lembut, sayang sayang and all – as you put it. They like the sayang sayang but I’m not sure about the ‘lembut’ part even then. Over here they like it rough..

  21. Can I ask you a question Cina Kedah? The gals love pisang Ambon. They tell me “Size does matter”. Do you think size matters?

  22. Mr. Bean,
How I wish my wife is a Malay from kampung, with all the good traditional characters of sopan santun, manja lembut & sayang sayang values.
    Cheers

So you love ayam kampong? Are you sure you’re up to speed with that? They can be very hard to handle. They are not the ayam kampong of old that Dato and I have been used to.

  23. Din
Whenever any middle or upper level leader in PR leaves the one of the component parties, B-UMNO (N is in UMNO for nasional) likes to put a spin on it. That is part of political gamesmanship.
Tunku Aziz’s reasons for leaving DAP is rather specious, “irreconciliable differences”. With whom? When he joined DAP, he extolled the virtues of the party and its leaders and what it stood for. And it was better than PKR or PAS! That came out quite clearly at that time. The elder Lim and the others were effusive in welcoming such a big catch (?). Immediately he was given an elevated position of Vice Chairman and then Senatorship.
I think this was rather heady for Tunku. But then it was observed that he hardly made any sound bites while in the Senate on behalf of the DAP or PR, as was expected of blooded party men. But then Tunku was hardly politically blooded or bloodied.
The honeymoon ended when it became obvious to both parties to come to their senses. Probably Tunku may have realised that his Senatorship would not be renewed. Therefore he had to on his terms. And unfortunately Bersih 3 became the tool of the whole farce. To argue that the fundamental right to rally would lead to breaking the law is stretching logic a bit. And to confirm the fact after some broke through the barriers put up by the Police was stretching it too much. No one entered the Padang which was the Magistratest Order. Therefore no one broke the law! The reaction of the Police was a bit rough to say the least and provocative!
But we are here not to argue about Bersih 3 but about Tunku’s resignation. He is acting a little spoilt.

  24. Just 1 of the Malay leader resign and lable DAP as a racist party?

Can we lable Umno also a racist party where majority people reject them?

Please use the brain to think on what racist issues had been done by DAP before any judgement made on them and don’t follow blindly on what the pig “brain” minister had mentioned.

DAP train those Bumiputra to be independent (get contract based on merit) and not rely on “TONGKAT”. Transparency, reduce wastage/corruption and put the rakyat in the 1st position.

This event had happened in Penang and I feel proud for those bumiputera who get job based on merit rather than “Connection”. By doing this, the bumi will improve and survive by its own. This process and miracle had happened in “MUTIARA” state and the BUMI there will be respected by all race like malay in Singapore.

Can anyone prove to me which state has done better than Penang? (whether is under the Pakatan or Umno)

This is the tactic used by Umno to destroy LIM GE and they can not accept a Chinese to be better than Malay.

  25. Gawd ! Your readers all want a piece of Tunku Aziz. What good does that do? There are lots of Tunku Aziz lurking round corners. Work on them too. Time to move on folks!

  26. It is the mention of the stipend of 50k ringgit a year that did it. It broke the camel’s back. It is like paying someone RM5.00 to watch your neigbor’s camel toe. You don’t know Tunku Aziz Tunku Ibrahim.

  27. Dato’,
thats what I gleaned from all the articles and comments in your blog and others. I wanted to say first that he is making a fool of himself but changed it. I don’t have any other reason to criticise him. as you said ‘if’ he had resigned from DAP, stating the differences and gone into civil society obligations nobody will criticise him now. on the contrary he has gone public to endorse the ruling party/Najib thereby giving it another unfair advantage.

  28. Donna Summer’s untimely demise should remind us of our own mortality. Yet you guys insist on wanting a piece of Tunku Aziz. Thanks to Dato and his threads on his friend more can be expected to come out of the woodwork to claim a piece of this guy.

  29. This thread continues to get a lot of hits. The guy thrusts himself into the public eye with his endorsment of the DAP some years ago. Just as suddenlly he will now drop off the radar screen. He is never going to join UMNO. You don’t know the guy if you entertain even the slightest of doubt that he will join UMNO.

  30. its not the question of him joining umno or not.
he has already inflicted enough damage to DAP and PR.

  31. From further development of the Tunku Aziz’s episode, I am now convinced that this man was turned around even before he joined DAP. Tunku Aziz was not his own man anymore, he was compromised and he had to follow orders. He was planted inside DAP to observe and to sleep. Once he joined DAP he was not the crusader that he once was when he was at Transparency International Malaysia. He lost his voice and not once did he speak on behalf of the people when crisis after crisis were swirling around the country. He was conspicuous in his silence, and his failure to attract even a single Malay into the party is testimony to his impotence to act on his own free will. He was not allowed to recruit by his handlers, and when he was appointed a Senator, he merely warmed the seat and did raise any pertinent questions regarding his favorite subjects: transparency and corruption. He was as quiet as a church mouse.

He was a a sleeper agent who remained inactive for a long period while establishing a secure and comfortable position in the party. Other agents such as Chandra Muzaffar was activated from time to time in order to discredit the Pakatan parties, usually when the UMNO regime was facing a crisis or election. True to form, Tunku Aziz was activated just in time to discredit the Bersih 3.0 rally, and following the exact script à la Chandra Muzaffar, he resigned from his party which he once said he held in high esteem. Yes the timing was suspicious but it was planned to be that way. As I have said before, money was not his motivation. If he had his choice he would have remained a gentleman and ride into the sunset without rancor. But in a high-stake game of political brinkmanship he was not allowed to be a gentleman. He was ordered to inflict as much damage as possible and that could have broken his gentleman’s heart because he was not in control of his own life. He was blackmailed and he had no choice but to follow orders.

Regarding his joining UMNO, I don’t think UMNO needs him into the party. UMNO only needs him to be kept on a leash and not let him to exercise his conscience because what he stands for is diametrically opposite from what UMNO practiced. He will be a kept dog and from time to time will be let out to bark and bite. Judging from his demeanor, he appeared robotic as he acted on the script that was written for him. Tunku Aziz is a miserable man, pity him.

  32. I never trusted Tunku Aziz to see the True Nature of DAP chinese-ness. I lost respect for him the moment he joined DAP, and I don’t feel sorry for him after his embarrassing departure.

I was banned from your site months ago. I don’t care much for you either, for you haven’t been one to tolerate people who challenge your views.

Contrast that with Helen Ang, who has called me out a few times but still tolerates my posts that challenge some of her stereotypical ‘Han chinese’ views. Only now I see her able to understand the point of view of the Malay/Bumi/Muslim majority. Then again, she might be pandering to the political slant of her readers in order to gain more ‘blogger points’.

You, on the other hand, are another Tunku Aziz.

  33. This thread is about the DPM’s spin on Tunku’s resignation and yet, apart from Bean comparing LGE to the DPM, no other reader (I think) has remarked on the DPM’s outrageous spin.

Are we so immuned to the DPM’s constant outbursts that we don’t even bother to comment on them anymore?

  34. Nobody care to listen to the DPM anymore. He doesn’t have substance and always undermining the PM. Couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to this Malay first Muslim second goofy.
