Dr M: Handover pact will not restore Umno, BN

By Shannon Teoh

PORT DICKSON
July 12, 2008

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed today renewed calls for Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to step down immediately but said the no-confidence motion by the Opposition on Monday would not achieve this.

“Not in 2010, not in December, but now to give Datuk Seri Najib time to restore Umno,” he told over 300 paying guests at Port Dickson Golf Club, referring to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak’s agreement to take over then.

Dr Mahathir stated that Abdullah had inherited a strong party but in four years since the strong showing at the 2004 election had caused a sharp decline in the fortunes of BN.

“He cannot restore the party because what people want is for him to resign, and then the support will return to BN.”Despite this, the veteran politician called the attempt to table a no-confidence motion in Abdullah by the opposition “just a show” that would not achieve much.

“They would need BN MPs to take their side and only two from SAPP will join them. It would’ve been more effective if SAPP had submitted the motion themselves.”

He also said Najib was a shining star before becoming deputy prime minister, after which he became a yes-man and lost his credibility.”Will his support for Abdullah over the next two years make him stronger or weaker? He should be allowed to work with the grassroots immediately.”

In his speech, the former prime minister also owned up to his mistake of appointing Abdullah as his successor but said that the blame should be shared by all Umno members as they had voted him in as vice-president II behind Najib while Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was deputy president.

“Abdullah had supported Tengku Razaleigh when he challenged me but delegates made him a supreme council member and then a vice-president. So after Anwar had to go, I appointed him because of the support he had and his Mr Clean image.

“But now we must fix this mistake. That is why I am not just sitting at home — I want to right my wrongs,” Dr Mahathir added.

While he acknowledged that he believed Najib had made a pact with current vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, he refused to endorse the pact.

He claimed, however, that the 2010 date was a strategy by Abdullah to halt Najib’s presidency bid and would lead to negative effects.

“What if Muhyiddin persists in running for deputy president? If he beats Najib, can he still be appointed prime minister? This will only extend the political uncertainty.”

He also touched on V.K. Lingam and Tun Salleh Abas cases, calling both conspiracies to discredit him.

He also confirmed his belief that Anwar is a “good friend of America” as he met with Paul Wolfowitz, an influential pro-Israel American conservative, while in Munich after being released from prison and also constantly invited senators and members of congress to Malaysia when he was in government.

Former Kedah Menteri Besar Tan Sri Sanusi Junid, who quit UMNO with Dr Mahathir earlier this year, was also present and quipped that if Abdullah could lose four states and Kuala Lumpur in four years, “God willing he will lose another three by 2010.”

  1. Dear Din Merican,

Maybe this info can be of use for Anwar Ibrahim’s debate tonight if passed on promptly:

Petronas Profit Jumps to Record as Oil, Gas Increase

    Thanks.

Anon, thanks. Timing could not be better. Tonight’s debate will separate man from boy. Anwar Ibrahim has been fully briefed by his expert team, and policy advisers. His message to the Malaysian audience will be that when he becomes Prime Minister, the petrol price at the pump will be reduced. I do not wish to preempt him.

Just stay glued to your TV sets and listen carefully how he argues his case. After that, you can have no other conclusion than to say to yourselves, families and associates that he is our man for a dynamic and robust Malaysia. That explains a lot why the Badawi government is using all means possible to contain him. —Din Merican

  2. Have you ever wondered why Dr M always gives his side of opinion and try to interfere again and again in national issues (especially things regarding Pak Lah and Proton)? I am pretty he has something on his sleeve and it’s either good or bad.
    ___________
Che Det’s views are neither good or bad. They are politically expedient and usually self serving. He keeps changing his views like changing his shirts. But yes, never underestimate the ability of Che Det to come out from a tight corner and deliver a devastating counter punch. He is smart, astute and very combative. He is an excellent debater and quick thinker. I may not like his 21st century politics, but I admire and respect Che Det for his guts and political acumen.

What he says about Najib makes sense. In politics, 23 months can be eternity. He knows that Najib is damaged goods who has to depend on Badawi for his political survival. There are lingering doubts about the relationship between Najib and the late Altantuya Shaariibuu. Che Det probably knows more than he is prepared to disclose at this time.—Din Merican

  3. Chedet Check this out!

You claimed you made a mistake but I call it a blunder! Your power is already extinguished after you made the blunder & so you have obsolutely no rights in deciding who you want as a lackey PM. If I were you, I would have taken a free pass to Zimbabwe where your buddy MuGaBee is waiting for you with open arms. If you want to wait it is also your right but be forewarned if PR takes control you will be the first to Check In at Sungei Buloh jail in the cell used to be occupied by Abang Pete. You won’t miss it coz the wall of the cell is inscribed in blood “Raja Petra was Here”!

  4. What Pak Lah inherited was a party dictated by the sole whims and fancy of Dr Mahathir, the “fortunes” of UMNO-BN experienced that sharp decline because the people who were previously well taken care of are no longer well taken care of. and so the inner cracks started to appear. And he appointed Pak Lah thinking exactly what he’s calling Najib now, a yes man, not expecting Pak Lah to be dispense with so many things that legacies he has put in place. cuz nothing else explains this unrelenting attack.

  5. Andrew,

It is true, but his successor made things worse. Badawi promised the moon in 2004, delivered nothing except promises, promises and promises and continues to say things in 2008 that he cannot implement.

Despite our criticisms, Tun Mahathir made sure that there was food on the table for every Malaysian, inflation was well contained, unemployment low (in fact, there was full employment, meaning that those who can and want to work have jobs) and businesses could do well.

In short, Tun Mahathir did not mismanage the economy whereas Badawi ruined the economy and lost control over the administration of our country. Now he has to resort to suppression and repression to save his own skin.—Din Merican

  6. “In short, Tun Mahathir did not mismanage the economy whereas Badawi ruined the economy…” Din Merican

Wouldn’t misallocation and not just inefficient allocation of scarce national resources qualify as mismanagement? Millions have been lost through projects like Perwaja and Proton – the latter managed by a guitar strumming, so-called ‘guru’ of tough negotiations, a poker player and a history graduate whose knowledge on automobiles manufacturing and marketing is as flat as his ass. Excuse the ‘accolade’!

All this talk not too long ago, about the sale of Augusta for 1 euro being stupid and all?? An ‘O’ level student in law would tell you that the nominal sum of 1 euro is to make the agreement legal and enforceable. Who do they think we are?

I do not believe the recent sale to Harley is a vindication of the former CEO’s position on the matter. The ousted CEO played poker with the country’s scarce resources and lost – as he grew rich, as did his mentor Mahathir.

  7. Abang Din,
I do not meant to use your blog to put down Chedet but I can’t help ignoring his continuing arrogance. May I suggest that if you find it too offensive just remove it if you wish!

  8. “In short, Tun Mahathir did not mismanage the economy whereas Badawi ruined the economy ..” – Din Merican

Come on Din, most Malaysians feel if not for Mahathir, Malaysia won’t be in such a big mess today. Mahathir must take the blame and the cause of everything that has gone wrong with this country – blatant abuse of power, police brutality, judiciary rot, rampant corruption and his divide and rule policies! He even deliberately picked a weak leader to succeed him, for obvious reasons.

After 22 years of dictatorial rule with a free hand to the nation’s till with trillions of ringgit gone unaccounted for, and huge amount gone to bail out his cronies, if this not called blatant
    “mismanagement”, then what is it?

  9. Jong, sangat setuju. 22 years (lebeh kurang 2 generasi minda rakyat telah ‘dirosakan’ dengan perkara2 jelik yang you sebut in your comment.

Secara khususnya minda UMNO Melayu has been ‘twisted’ and ‘corrupted to the core’ . It’s OK to have those qualities.

Nilai2 baik semasa era Tun Razak dan sebelumnya semua sudah masuk longakang.
