KUALA LUMPUR: MIC Vice-President Tan Sri K.S. Nijhar has resigned after a heated row two weeks ago with party chief Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

A senior MIC official confirmed that Nijhar, the highest ranking Sikh in the party, had submitted his resignation and that an official announcement would be made today.

Nijhar, when contacted, declined to comment but said the party would make an announcement on the matter.

The former Subang member of parliament’s decision to quit the party comes on the heels of an argument with Samy Vellu during the MIC central working committee meeting on May 15.

Reporters waiting outside the room saw a visibly upset Nijhar storming out, slamming the door behind him after shouting: “I never knew you to be such a cruel man. How can you simply sack a man?”
It was later learnt that Nijhar was upset with the expulsion of former Kapar division chairman S. Subramaniam, better known as Jumbo Maniam.

Meanwhile, a source close to Nijhar said his resignation was not linked to the incident but to make way for new blood. “He had to go sooner or later to give way for new blood and decided to call it a day,” said the source, who did not say why Nijhar had chosen to quit mid-term.

Comment:

Loyalty has its limits. My classmate at University of Malaya, Tan Sri Nijhar, has had enough of the MIC President. His patience and forebearance have been tested and the time has come for final reckoning. Well done, Tan Sri Nijhar. I wish you had done it earlier. I suppose, it was a matter of strategic timing for impact!

Samy Velu who has a fantastic record of misdemeanors (Maika Holdings is one example) and corrupt politics should have been thrown out of office aeons ago. He destroyed the credibility of the Indian community by playing, like past MCA leaders, UMNO type feudal politics while sucking up to UMNO leaders at the expense of the interest of party members.

It took a “Black Swan” like HINDRAF to shake up the Indian community. Malaysian Indians now realise that MIC is an anachronism, given the never-seem-to-end leadership of Samy Velu and his cohorts (which until recently included Nijhar himself).

Makkal Sakti became a major force during the 2008 Elections which saw the ruling UMNO-led Barisan Nasional lose its hegemony over Parliament and its control over 5 state governments (Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor and Kelantan. In its wake, MIC lost its bearing and influence over Malaysian Indians.

The majority of our Indian brothers and sisters are with Parti KeADILan Rakyat-Pakatan Rakyat. It is about time that those are still sticking to Samy Velu to move over.—Din Merican

  1. Long overdue! KS Nijhar should have said Goodbye Samy when Hindraf was screaming for attention and when Allan Perera and Indi Nadarajah contributed their ever hilarious song to Malaysian society before the 8 Mar 2008 12th General Election:

Why didn’t Nijhar leave MIC then? Was he expecting to move up when Samy leaves? So it’s power he’s after, not the interest of the Malaysian Indian community?

I hope Pakatan Rakyat won’t turn into a jumbo ‘garbage collector’ for scumbags and rent-collectors from BN otherwise it makes no sense giving our votes to PR. We already have enough of them the past 51 years and see what they have done to this country?!

Umno can have Ezam back, they deserve one another! Whatever his motives, Ezam must be kidding himself to think that Umno welcomes him warmly and that he is able to influence Umno with his “reforms”.

This guy’s political career is finished, he’s suffering from severe impairment of intellectual capacity medics call “Dementia”.

  2. Unfortunately, feudalistic mentality does not affect political parties alone it affects all strata of society.

The civil service is a fine example. The KSN, KSU and Pengarah can do no wrong and woes betide anyone who dares cross their paths or disagrees with their commands. Like always there will be the hangers-on who will do their biddings.

It’s about time we do away with this mentality and adopt one that is in sync with current needs. It’s wishful thinking, nonetheless but not something impossible.

Firstly, get rid of all honorific titles. Stop dishing out titles and awards. Commendation letters and medals will do.

I hope PK, especially PRK, will not end up like Umno. If it does , Pak Din, you better start a new blog.

  3. It’s amazing really that Samy Vellu can still be so adamant about wanting to “rebrand” MIC, and at the same time refuse to listen to anyone who says that the leadership in MIC should change.

Patience, as with loyalty, has its limits. The source said that Nijhar quit to “give way for new blood”. But surely this “giving way for new blood” should be coming from Samy Vellu himself!

**But then again, MIC wasn’t really very strong to start off with, even when they first joined the Alliance way back, it has been said that MIC stood for “May I Come in?”

  4. Tok Cik, Jong and su, very good comments. There must be some underlying reason(s) for Nijhar to leave MIC and abandon Samy Velu. It is certainly not about teaming up with Dr. Jeyakumar, the conquerer of Sungei Siput. I will find out when I see him for lunch soon. —Din Merican

  5. Din,
Defeat is indeed a wise teacher. It opens the eyes of the blind and ears of the deaf. It humbles the arrogant and exposes the weaknesses of the mighty.
Some go insane and eventually disintegrate.
Rarely will they have the wherewithal to recoup and rebuild.
Why? Because they never admit their mistakes. They blame everyone except themselves.
Such is the pathetic state of MIC, MCA, Gerakan and of course UMNO.
    Their end is nigh.

  6. Mr Smith, I extremely like your comment, very true, well said! šŸ˜€
I suppose your will agree with me that our gutter politician Dr Mahathir fits in the 3rd line?

  7. Nijar’s action would have been deemed very much differently if he had resigned before this dismay election result of May 8. Now, it could be interpreted that he is abandoning ship as the prospect for parties in the BN coalition looks hopeless. Din, you may have some sentimental reason to view his departure from MIC differently, but I would have more respect for him if he had left for a more substantial reason then just because he is making way for younger people to taake over.

  8. Dear Tok Chik. I must say I may have many differences with you in many things here, but with regards to our civil service, Im afraid to say that I agree with your points.

I welcome we push for a change.

    Zaib

  9. It is a great depth of ignorance
to refer to Nijhar as the Highest ranking “”SIKH”.He is NO sikhs and does not represents the Sikhs in any way.

He is simply another indian opportunist.
He does not represent any identity of a sikh.Please.Perhaps, it will do all malaysians good to see the back of this fellow, who has lived a false life.
