UMNO rots top down

The last few weeks have seen the UMNO Vice President candidate Ahmad Zahid Hamidi pull out all the stops to endear himself to the Malay heartland. His campaign tactics have included:

  • Promoting a shoot first policy amongst the police aimed at wiping out suspected bad hats and criminals
  • Accusing the Chinese underworld of being masterminds behind criminal activities; Indians as hit men; and Malays as the primary victims
  • Implying that the Tiga Line Gang, a banned Malay gang, is actually misunderstood and quite harmless, and tacitly supporting the activities of the gang.

The Tiga Line is believed to have links with Malay NGO Pertubuhan Kebajikan dan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Pekida), which in turn is strongly linked with UMNO. The group is alleged to be involved in drug distribution, car-jacking and night-club protection.

Columnists from the mainstream media have tried to downplay his irresponsible and inflammatory and racially divisive speeches, claiming that he is simply burnishing his “tough-guy image” and linking his comments to the ongoing leadership campaign for the three vice president positions in the party.

As articulated by The Star’s main political writer, “[a]fter all, UMNO is the abbreviation for United Malays National Organisation. Its members are essentially Malay nationalists, patriotic to King and Country and bound together by the religion”.

Should we Malaysians accept this rationalisation for some of the most rabid public speeches ever made by a senior government minister?

Zahid HamidiXShould we see it as just ‘halal’ or ‘kosher’ political talk and agree that there is nothing wrong with such talk because Zahid is a Malay nationalist?

Should we simply shrug our shoulders and accept that what Zahid and his supporters, and similar contenders for other positions, are sprouting is simply campaign talk – a position which The Star would prefer its readers to accept?

Political behaviour in Malaysia

In most other democratic countries of the world, guilty politicians making such utterances – when exposed – would be forced to commit political hara kiri.

Zahid’s defence of extra-judicial killings is especially contemptuous. Make no doubt about it – it is a tacit invitation to the police to engage in killings whenever they feel remotely threatened.

Any other politicians with any sense of personal honour would resign orNajib would be compelled by his superior – in this case, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak – to leave office. In any other multi-racial society, the public shame and odium of these racist views would condemn the miscreant to resign and retire from public office and politics.

But not in Malaysia where they get away scot-free with the connivance of the mainstream media which not only looks the other way but also makes excuses for them. As the cynics put it, “Malaysia Boleh!”

Far from being chastised or publicly shamed, Zahid and his supporters now think of him as the ‘chosen one”. Most polls have him as the front runner amongst the vice president candidates and presumably in the running for the country’s top position in the foreseeable future.

To me the accolades and support that Zahid is gathering from UMNO members is symptomatic of what is wrong with the party. How is it possible that a man with such a racist mental orientation can be pushed to the forefront of national leadership?

This is not to forget his violent behaviour which would have likely put him behind bars if we had an impartial and non-partisan police. This happened when as Defence Minister in 2010 he was alleged to have bashed up his daughter’s boyfriend so badly that the man had to be hospitalised.

Let’s also not forget his chequered past when he was an ally of Anwar Ibrahim but was welcomed back into the Umno fold for stating that Anwar had put him up to raising allegations of cronyism and nepotism during Dr Mahathir’s time, and that Anwar had also abused his position as Finance Minister to direct business opportunities to him.

Can such a man be trusted? Apparently UMNO supporters and rank and file seem to think so. The results of the race for vice president will soon be out.

Meanwhile the mainstream mass media is trumpeting the election of Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahrizat Abdul Jalil as proof of the triumph of the liberal and progressive faction in UMNO.

Rot in Umno runs deep

Many Malaysians beg to differ. One contributor to one of the most popular pro-UMNO blogs has described the situation in the party well:

UMNO is being controlled by disillusioned, clueless treasure hunters.

Most – not all – consider UMNO as second chance. The number of bankrupt aspirants vying for party positions is a case in point.

To change UMNO the usual way will not work as result of current party election show.

The current govt manifests the choice of poor Malays and it is in the interest of UMNO office-bearers to keep them poor because they can easily be swayed by BRIM and other form of bribes. So therefore it is understandable that the more educated Malays are drifting towards PKR . .it is more of perasaan malu to be a part of a party which has morphed into something terrible.”

From this and other accounts, it is clear that the rot in the party is deep and runs from top to bottom.

There are still some good people within the party but they need to put a stop to Zahid and other similar leaders or bail out from the party before they too are sucked into extremism, corruption and mis-governance.

  1. Takes a bigger thief to catch a thief. Takes a bigger gangster to whip other gangsters. Soon we have a Sicilian clan in the government or maybe Mafia and the Godfather YOU know who !

  2. The govt had lost its plot to proper manage the economy and the country long ago……hence the unfolding of the mess they created.

To make things worst and permanent, they continued to lie to cover up their gross incompetent and wrongdoings…..majority of Malays who returned this corrupt govt. for another 5 years did not help to stop the rot destroying the country in an environment of rampant corruption, gross abuse of power and gross mismanagement. They placed the corrupt party and their self interest above everything else.

This is only the tip of the iceberg……the ordinary people will suffer more pain for decades to come before small gain, from real reform, could be realised.

  3. Din,
Rowan Atkinson’s made a point about the so called conservatives that are found not just in UK but in all over the world including Malaysia

  4. Mr. Matthew-Goldman

Please do not insult the Sicilians or Mafia by comparing them with the present jokers in Malaysia.

The Sicilians and Mafia are much more honourable people and do not stoop to such level.

  5. Koon Yew Yin probably is well informed about the current state of UMNO to say that “…So therefore it is understandable that the more educated Malays are drifting towards PKR . .it is more of perasaan malu to be a part of a party which has morphed into something terrible.” But I wouldn’t say that about the so-called “more educated Malays” whom to me are what the Malays call as “kacang lupakan kulit” and “setelah melepasi titian, maka tongkat dibuang”.

  6. The whole “Allah Kalimah” issue just screams how rotted they are. They did it to pander to the right NEEDLESSLY – as if those who are zealot on the issue would vote for anyone else but UMNO when PAS has taken the other side of the debate. Its the hide of stupidity when they needless don’t have to. Its both irresponsibility and over-entitlement of prodigal inheritors.

The UMNO election was already over even before it started. UMNO is simple the main and most of the problems of this nation. Period

  7. I hate to say this, aliefalfa.. – but cliches sounding like a pithy broken record doesn’t help.

Thinking Malays are precisely the One’s that try to ‘lupakan’ moldy kulit and ‘tongkats’ are for OKU – whom they aren’t. They don’t get angry like their country bumpkin relatives – they get even. Which goes to show why UMNOb at the present rate will never be able to capture the Urban Malay vote. I guess that’s why the ‘Panic of the Kalimah 2013 ver 1.0’, when it comes to Sabah and Sarawak.

Mr Koon is a renegade in Establishment eyes, but one imbued with a sense of moral integrity that far exceeds any Glass Manufacturer or Lap Mongrel.. UMNOb is truly beyond redemption – but that is a word that you guys don’t understand, much less reflect upon.

CLF, you probably are much more and better informed than that Koon Yew Yin about UMNO’s current state and also perhaps more discerning than I am in your understanding of Malay proverbs for me to comment further on your posting.
I only humbly stated my opinion on those ungrateful ones knowing fully well that others may join them later on perhaps. Though I’m not an UMNO member, I believe when the going gets tough, UMNO will still keep on going both in rural and urban areas – it is a continuously learning organisation though you and others are always free to disagree.

  8. It’s best if Mukhriz is defeated in his quest for a seat on the UMNO Supreme Council. This will weaken the Mahathirists and the neo-fascists and show Malaysians that Mahathir is an emperor with half of his clothes missing (not completely naked though 🙂 ).
Nevertheless, let’s not forget that UMNO Baru is still a den of thieves and leading Malaysia further on the road to bankruptcy (financial as well as moral).

  9. I know this Koon guy personally. He’s no renegade but is someone who calls a spade a spade. Koon is in his 80s but is still healthy and is very alert. His no-nonsense approach to life gets many within the Establishment fuming, including MB Zambry.

I have nothing but admiration for this charismatic old timer who, in spite of his odd ways, is kind-hearted and charitable unlike many. In fact, he helped rebuilt and refurbished Ipoh’s Salvation Army’s building. It costed him a few million ringgits.

Koon Yew Yin volunteered to build hostels for UTAR students in Kampar who have to pay heavily for accommodation in rooms and houses purpose-built by MCA cronies and stooges. He was denied this opportunity by MCA bigwigs who considered his offer as a threat to their livelihood.

If only some of the well-heeled Umnoputras are as generous as Koon life will be a lot easier for the poor Melayus and, by extension, the rest.

  10. It is not difficult to predict the rest of the results. The two unopposed candidates for No.1 & No.2 , Heads of Youth, Wanita, and Putri already have an idea as to whom they can work with.

  11. aliefalfa – “I believe when the going gets tough, UMNO will still keep on going both in rural and urban areas – it is a continuously learning organisation though you and others are always free to disagree.”

Well, I disagree that it is a continuously learning organisation.
UMNO’s 50 years of corrupt reign has made it both powerful and arrogant enough for it to believe that the Malays (both rural and urban) will not be so stupid as to not want the revised NEP. There is nothing to learn as far as UMNO is concerned. So, why fix something that ain’t broke? After all, the last election result was only a minor hiccup… was it not?
