Mariam on Mahathir and Mahathirism

October 12, 2013

MY COMMENT: I have said enough about the man I admired growing Dato Din Mericanup in Alor Setar, Kedah in the 1950s, at least for the time being.  Just go the archives and you will be able to read what I wrote about Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohamad since I started this blog in November, 2007. Or get a copy of Tom Plate’s Conversations with Mahathir, where I put my views as plainly as I could on public record. I attribute in part the wide readership of this blog to the stuff I posted on  his politics and character.

So I will now host  comments from Mariam and my good buddy Dato’ Seri Nazri Aziz and let them share their views on the 4th Prime Minister with you. Here is an opportunity for you to tell us what you think of Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohamad. I am surprised UMNO leaders have chosen the route of “elegant silence” about this man. Nazri Aziz is the only man in the Cabinet and UMNO-Baru who has the guts to openly share his views. For that, I must thank him.–Din Merican

Mariam Mokhtar: On Mahahtir Mohamad and Mahathirism

by Mariam Mokhtar@http://www.malaysiatoday.com| October 11, 2013

His politicisation of the education system with its lack of meritocracy has crippled two generations of Malaysians and god forbid if he succeeds in pushing his son to continue his legacy.

COMMENT

mahathir-in-tearsThe haughty Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s longest serving prime minister, will never express regret. Mahathir made a mess of Malaysia and now he acts the innocent. He played on the insecurities of the Malays to build his empire – political and financial – within a warped framework of “unity”.

Whatever has gone wrong with Malaysia, the solution is not more Mahathirism. Look where it got us and look at what this nation will become if Mahathir succeeds in pushing his son, Mukhriz into pole position.

The closest Mahathir came to admit that his policies had failed Malaysians, was on Sept 12, at the 30th anniversary luncheon of the Japanese Chambers of Trade and Industry Malaysia (Jactim). He said that the use of English, especially in science and mathematics, would help improve the standing of Malaysian public universities on the world stage.

When asked for his views about the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025, his curt reply indicated his displeasure at the omission of English in schools.

“Melayu mudah lupa”, for it was Mahathir in his role as the Minister of Education in the 70s, who effectively wiped English off the slate, in schools. Mahathir dismantled a century of British effort to provide education, and demolished the work of two centuries of dedicated mission school pioneers.

On October 7, Mahathir again expressed his concern at the lack of proficiency in English displayed by students, when he complained about the quality of graduates, who presented themselves for job interviews. In one case, he claimed that only seven out of the 333 potential job applicants in information technology, were suitable. The unsuccessful graduates did not know English and had asked for the interview to be conducted in Malay.

“Melayu mudah lupa” and it is disingenuous of Mahathir to feign ignorance, because he tinkered with the education system, as Minister for Education and later, as prime minister. Malaysian parents from the 70s onwards, have been on a roller-coaster ride with their children’s education, which flopped between English and Malay, several times.

The 70s saw a decline of English medium schools. A decade later, it was the turn of the higher institutions of learning to suffer. Non-Malay lecturers saw their services, and their publications, being sidelined. Simultaneously, the civil service, the armed forces and the judiciary, absorbed many Malays and promoted them, in preference to the other races.

Today, Malaysia reaps what Mahathir has sown. With the emphasis on Malay, Malays are reluctant to speak English with some claiming that it is unpatriotic to speak anything but Malay. The irony is that these Malays complain about the difficulty of getting jobs in the private sector, or with multinational companies.

A child in a MARA residential college told this writer that if he were to speak English, to practise the language, he would be teased and bullied for showing off and wanting to be “Mat Salleh”. When overseas, a majority of the Malay students, diplomatic staff and government officials speak halting English. Many have difficulty making themselves understood.

Mahathir kept Malays frightened and demoralised

In Mahathir’s ‘Look east’ campaign, he claimed to like the Japanese work culture but ignored the Chinese work ethic. Why? If he had promoted the use of Mandarin alongside Malay, all Malaysian school children would have greater exposure to business and educational opportunities in the east, especially as the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is now a super power.

Mahathir did not care about the consequences of politicising education, despite the reservations of parents, pupils, teachers and schools. All he cared about was to be declared the “saviour of the Malays”. The man who claimed to have a vision for Malaysia, displayed a naïve, parochial view of the world.

Although more Malays enter higher education, their degrees are dumbed-down, because the pass marks are lowered for them. Despite the introduction of quotas, élite Malays abuse the system and deny their poorer countrymen the opportunities which were meant for them. Five decades ago, the Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka invited engineers and scientists to expand the Malay language, with suitable scientific terms.

Today, we see a bastardisation of the Malay language, not just in science and technology, with suffixes like “ogi” or “asi” being appended to many English words, in a lazy manner.

Mahathir’s politicisation of the education system with its lack of meritocracy, has crippled at least two generations of Malaysians. The brightest students whom we rejected, became Singapore’s gain.

Mahathir may have wanted to help the bulk of the Malays, but his policy of making everyone slow down, to the point of standstill, so the Malays could catch up, was detrimental to the nation. His policy should have been to provide assistance to all needy students, regardless of race or religion, to raise them to an acceptable standard.

If Malaysia is in a mess today, blame the BN politicians (UMNO-Baru, MIC, MCA, Gerakan) who did not unite and stand up to Mahathir. We know that opposition politicians who criticised Mahathir, were jailed.

Yesterday, Mahathir said that the ministers, whose failed departments were highlighted in the latest Auditor-General’s report, should resign for incompetence. It is ironic that during his tenure, he defended the failures of his ministers, despite these failures being highlighted in the annual Auditor-General’s reports. Furthermore, he dismissed reports of his own deficiencies.

No one should be fooled by Mahathir’s latest call for ministers to resign. mahathirHe is not concerned about the quality of UMNO-Baru ministers, he is only weeding out the candidates who stand in the way of Mukhriz.

In his book on Mahathir, Barry Wain describes the pain felt by the young Mahathir, on being discriminated by the Malay community in his native Alor Setar. It is possible that Mahathir expressed his loathing for the Malays by using them to gain power, whilst at the same time giving the Malays the perception that they were privileged.

Mahathir kept his hold on the Malays by deliberately keeping them frightened and demoralised.

He did this by constantly harping on May 13 and racial violence. He told the Malays that they would not survive if they did not have the NEP and other government incentives. He gave them an inferior education because he knew that a confident and well-educated nation is more difficult to govern.

Mahathir made the Malays feel helpless so that they would think he was their saviour. The greatest tragedy would be if Mahathir managed to promote his son, Mukhriz, to continue, where he left off.

  1. Not sure if we need to keep attacking this man or ignoring him. UMNO workships him, i mean if this was India, he would have a temple dedicated complete with ritual workship, look at his disiples Ib Ali and Zahid Hamidi or Ali Rustam…it gets worse everyday…his son is not worth a tuppence

  2. I have said many bad things about this man called Madhater. However, I am going to do something different this time. There are few things Madhater have done it right

Firstly, It’s the reduction of monarchical influence or rather power which unfortunately it seems to have a comeback. No thank to madhater again because he allowed it to happen due to political expediency. Our monarchs must emulate the QE2 who remains above politics.

In fact Madhater should have done even further. I heck care about RPK going to say about that preservation. Monarch must follow the standard set by King George V

  3. The 70s English medium schools was a prefect environment for national harmony, balanced education and integration.

Among other matters, the change to BM and its failure destroyed the future prospect of the millions of students over the decades……majority will find it difficult to find real, permanent, rewarding and meaningful jobs to support their families.

These people will easily blame it on discrimination and then pick up any job with the govt. with low pay and terrible working environment destroying their career, self worth and confidence.

If national schools were successful, you don’t have to worry about Chinese or Indian schools…..the damage is permanent, long term and far reaching with no quick fix.

  4. Mariam needs not worry about Mukhriz at all as he will never be allowed to or be able to be like or go as far as his father. The surrounding conditions and circumstances both social & technological have changed to allow any leadership to proceed without being critically questioned.

  5. Nazri Aziz is the only man in the Cabinet and UMNO-Baru who has the guts to openly share his views. For that, I must thank him.–Din Merican
—————————————Agreed but Mariam should ask other cabinet members why only Nazri? Why are they afraid of their own shadow and not Nazri?

  6. I would agree with Alias Zee @10:14.

We often concentrate our energies vilifying or otherwise venerating whom we perceive as Evil or Good. Our sense of history is often warped around personalities who provide leadership or who are at the forefront of mass movements – for better or worse.

It is the unconscious universal ‘swarm’ of life i.e humanity, which uses the life of rulers for it’s own purpose. It is the average, individual, private citizen who ultimately decide the fate of Nations. Most times, they are like herds of unthinking ruminants on the Plains of Mediocrity. Leaders role are superficial and illusory – they are ultimately irrelevant, when it comes to pandering to the needs of selfish masses. It is all due to the timing of whether they ready, willing to actualize what is envisioned. In this case, they were NOT ready and fell back on Feudal ways. That is my view of Macro-history – rightly or wrongly.

So while you guys chuck rotten eggs and veggies at the Octo, i wish to remind you all that our generation as a whole, had ALLOWED him to do what was natural to him and to the whole mass of ignorant, confused proletariat. The lazy, rent-seeking Malays venerated him; the greedy Others, tolerated and even encouraged him so there they could thrive in Mediocrity and Ali-Baba-ism. Those who opposed, were persecuted and prosecuted.

It is definitely easier to cast stones at Satan’s Pillar, than to admit on hindsight that the majority of you were complicit to his policies.

UMNOb is too far gone to rein in. It is for the average Malay to come to their senses and to grow up. It is for the Other’s to stop running away and face the Peril. Can or not? No.

  7. What he did for Malaysia was 30% good and 70% bad.
(Like what the Chinese say about Chairman Mao)

    Or is it 20-80 ??

  8. Din.
I totally agree with Nazri comment.
In 1970 He attack Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
In 2004 he attack Tun Abdullah
    Now he started attacing Najib.

If Mukriz win the UMNO VP.Najib can say sayonara to his job .

In economy he appear like a hero to help the Malay achived NEP.
Look what he did to Halim Saad and Tajuddin.
He kill malaybusinessman like Halim and took away all his assets for free.
At the sametime he make Ananda,Vincent Tan and YTL billionair.
He cause the lack of quality leadership in UMNO for the next 20 years. He did it with purpose to ensure he continue to rule after his

    • if only you know the truth behind the wealth of HS and T. These are assets M entrusted to them. HS tried to keep them for himself. why T give back damaged assets entrusted to him. why do think Govt bought back MAS at original price.

  9. He did a great job of making the malays stupid most of the times. That was the leech he had on them…throw crumbs to those lackey and running dogs of MCA and MIC….and he was worshipped like the greek gods!
Thats why the slur words like “blur” and “kayu” is very common among the uneducated souls….during his tenure.
Surprising in this modern age we see another tyrant having his way with this country during his 22 years….

  10. ….Why are they (cabinet members) afraid of their own shadow and not Nazri? – Dato Din,

The straight answer is Nazri has balls of steel … Just look at Nazri’s hairless head for proof

While the rest have only meat balls and some lost theirs to Rosmah for safe keeping reasons.

  11. The problem is the disease is now almost complete in UMNO, what remain that is not is negligible. Even if KJ wins the UMNO Youth post, it does not mean anything – even the modest change proposal that he is, while not challenged is circuited over his critics. He won’t get far and his modest proposal even less. The idea this nation and UMNO have the luxury of slow reform is already evident – the modicum of pretentious change under Najib is already completely wrecked only a few months after the GE and the future only looks worst. It is the same as no change in any meaningful way only the appearance that brings comfort to those few who are uncomfortable with the obvious zealotry of UMNO Baru.

The problem started with Mahathir and he continues to be a big part of the problem BUT the only practical way to look at the issue is that its UMNO that is the problem.

  12. BigJoe,
I got to agree with you on UMNO is the real problem. Therefore, it must be completely destroyed. Just like why Tea Party must be full annihilated in USA

  13. Frankly, I still respected Maggie more than this man called Madhater. Doesn’t it sound similar in Madhater’s cabinet

  14. Mariam should watch the whole series of House of Cards. FU (Francis Uruqhuat) does share certain similarities with our allah above all allahs called Madhater. Though Francis is more eloquent than that man

  15. Hisham might not be elected as VP but he will still be appointed and co-opted as a member of the Majlis Tinggi UMNO and made a senator by his cousin the PM – so he will still be holding his binoculars as Defense Minister and tell us the Sulu invaders are harmless coz they are in sarongs and slippers…. God save Malaysia!!!

And on most Sundays he will still ride his blue-silver Harley Davidson Paraglide surrounded by 6-8 PDRM outriders to Tanjung Malim and eat his kari pau as if he owns the entire country and the highway…

Be afraid, Malaysia, be very afraid….

  16. A Magician Hypocrite
A Fake Malay Who Would Hide, for Convenience, his Malaysian Identity,
… and Blame Others, including the Malay Race, for his Own Failures .

He Owes Malaysia an Ingratitude for Sowing the Seeds
of Divisiveness and Hatred, Propagating Corruption and Deceit,
Derailing the Delivery Systems of the Judiciary and Education
that Makes Her People Lesser Persons in Social, Economic and Financial Standings ,
and in Values in Humanity and Integrity,
…Among the Malaysians, the Region and the World.

I Had Misjudged him for a Man of True Vision and Hope for Malaysia ,
    my Country, Our Country,
When he Took Office as the PM of Malaysia in the Early 1980.

    May Malaysia be Blessed
with the Start from a CLEAN SLATE of a New Coalition Leaderships
that are of Governance and Competence to Meet the Needs of its Rakyat, Provide Opportunities and Encourage them to Work Hard for What They Want,
…. Post Mahathir’s Fake Umno Baru Era.

  17. Dr Phua,

Chairman Mao Tze Tung had the vision to adapt Marx into the Chinese context by mobilsing the peasants instead of the proletariat. I don’t think the Chinese revolution would have succeeded had it not for this singular vision.

This vision freed the Chinese from the yoke of Western and Japanese Imperialism. It also defeated the corrupt Kuomintang who not only refused to fight the Japanese but mounted wave after wave of ground and air attacks against the Red Army.

This he did inspite of orders from Moscow to toe the party line – that it must be a proletarian revolution.

  18. Freeing the Chinese from Western Imperialism might not sound so hollow if one can remember seeing signs on the Shanghai Bund which say “Dogs and Chinaman not allowed”.

So, Dr Phua, please do not compare Dr Mahathir with Chairman Mao.

  19. Chairman Mao Tze Tung had the vision to adapt Marx into the Chinese context by mobilsing the peasants instead of the proletariat. – Aitp Tze

What is the diff between peasants and proletariat.

  20. Mao Tse Tung did one good thing and then did 20 bad things. Useless chap for making China look backward and uncivilized until that shorty Deng Xiaoping did the right thing. At least the shorty Deng did 10 good things and one bad thing.

  21. Frank,

Karl Marx formulated his theory at the height of the Industrial Revolution in England. The proletariat were the industrial workers of these newly formed factories. He believed that because the essence of Capitalism is in the exploitation of its workers, this would naturally and ultimately result in the revolt of the workers. Hence, it would lead to the Revolution of the Proletariat.

Mao Tze Tung, on the other hand, noted that the workers most exploited in China were not the industrial workers (proletariat) but the peasants in the countryside. And there were millions and millions of them. If only he could organise them…

    The rest is history.

  22. For me, Mahathir’s greatest achievement is to be able to fooled the Malays and for them to accept him as a Malay whilst he is not. Allah made him an Indian muslim but he decided to play Allah and metamorphose himself into a Malay.

He is so right that the Malays mudah lupa, yes they lupa that he is an Indian.
