Mariam Mokhtar on the Imbecilic Home Affairs Minister

http://www.malaysiakini.com

ZHHome Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi uses aggression to try to intimidate reporters, but he was hiding something behind the bully-boy mask which he wore at the press conference on Oct 4.

If Zahid thinks he can use his altercation with Malaysiakini to pursue an agenda which will curb press freedom, then he is seriously misguided.

It is amazing how much Zahid has changed in 15 years. At the UMNO-Baru assembly in 1998, Zahid attacked former PM Mahathir Mohamad for corruption, cronyism and nepotism. By 1999, he was practically eating out of Mahathir’s hands and referred to the then-premier’s remarks as “advice from a father to his son”. Then, he vowed to back the party leadership, but today he shows little concern for the way in which our money is mis-spent.

No one could accuse this writer of spinning; not with video footage showing Zahid bringing rudeness and thuggish behaviour to an art form. This is not the first incident of unbecoming behaviour from UMNO-Baru politicians, or their supporters, against members of the media.

A few months ago, Zahid was embroiled in a court case in which he was alleged to have assaulted a businessman. Zahid is better known for his idiocy, not powers of reasoning. His preferred mode of problem-solving is to threaten people and order those who are dissatisfied with the state of the country, to emigrate.

Zahid should realise that attributing the loss of the Police weapons to human error, is too glib. In all probability, neither he nor the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) knows what became of the weapons. If they have the information, then why are they withholding it?

Zahid and ReporterZahid started a running dialogue with Malaysiakini, when he should have been fielding questions from reporters. This diversionary tactic was a ruse to waste time.Having berated Malaysiakini, he made a hasty retreat, just like a coward. Zahid’s body language showed that he was keen to avoid further questioning.

UMNO-Baru spends hundreds of millions of ringgit on its elections and on foreign consultants to spruce up its image. Why does it not spend money for its politicians to attend classes in ethics, civility and good manners? How about educating their politicians to answer reporters’ questions properly?

As taxpayers, we want to know the measures the Home Ministry or the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will take to stem further wastage. What specific forms of human error does Zahid think could account for the loss of the weapons?

Zahid claimed that none of the losses were from “a breach of trust, deviant acts or elements of bribery”. How does he know? Did someone file a police report and were detailed investigations conducted?

Zahid denied that carelessness and mistakes made in the line of duty were to blame. What exactly does he mean? If the system is at fault, then he should say what remedial steps he or the IGP will take to rectify the mess.

Carelessness and error?

In August, it was reported in a daily newspaper that a Policeman’s pistol and ammunition had been stolen as he lay sleeping in his car, with his window wound down, in a lay-by in Shah Alam. It was odd that he had just returned from a funeral, carrying his gun, passport and lots of cash.

Is this the sort of carelessness and error Zahid referred to? Was this Policeman punished? Did he sell his gun to a syndicate? How do we know either man is telling the truth?

Zahid’s curriculum vitae states that before venturing into politics, he worked for two banks, OCBC and Bank Simpanan Nasional. Any bank staff member will confirm that at the end of the month, every sen has to be accounted for and no one is allowed to leave the bank and return home, until the books are balanced. Zahid may not have started his banking career as a teller, but this practice is drummed into every bank employee.

The video clip of Zahid’s infantile and childish behaviour at the October 4 press conference shows him acting like the school bully in a playground. He is verbally aggressive and he knows he can use his powers as home minister to make reporters compliant.

His angry outbursts are a means of showing off. He attempts to shame anyone whom he accuses of doing something wrong. He is fiercely argumentative when anyone tries to make a point. He threatens to punish and tries to humiliate in public anyone with whom he argues. This is not spin, but is accurate reporting. Zahid is damned by his own words and actions.

Zahid likes reporters who publish only what Umno-Baru want them to say. Incredibly, UMNO-Baru is the only political party which bans Malaysiakini from covering its functions, especially its supreme council meetings. This action compromises freedom of speech.

Many people will have noticed the steady build-up, since GE13, of harsher laws. Mahathir came out of the woodwork to support stricter laws, claiming that the streets were no longer safe; not that he would know or care.

Zahid claims that amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act (PCA) will be used to punish criminals, but cynics suspect that these draconian provisions will be used to gag opposition politicians, activists and reporters. We appear to be returning to the bad old days of restricted freedom.

The amendments were forced through Parliament and Zahid would be foolish to think he can broaden this latest attack on Malaysiakini into an attempt to gag the media, but the indications are that he is heading that way.

A day after the attack on Malaysiakini journalist Lawrence Yong, Zahid was at a security seminar for community leaders in Malacca, where it was alleged that he had made “sensitive remarks”.

Zahid Ham
Upon the discovery of the presence of journalists, Zahid banned them from publishing what was discussed and he followed this with a threat that he would have their newspapers shut down. The audience booed the media representatives, who were then forced to retreat.

Would Zahid have dared to humiliate, finger-wag and slap the shoulders of a foreign correspondent?Perhaps, his rude behaviour is reserved for Malaysian reporters because he can gag them and punish them, with the laws at his disposal. A bully boy attracts loyalty by fear. If Zahid harbours ambitions of becoming Prime Minister, he should tread warily.

  1. Blame Zahid Hamidi all you want. But the fact of the matter is that UMNO is a party that worships MORONIC MENACES.. A country ruled by a delusional mob party selling addiction only can end in a bad way ESPECIALLY for those that count on them.. How many successful, long term drug pushers and addicts have you seen? What happens to those who are their customers and those at the lower rung of the organisation? They end worst than they started..

  2. The problem with UMNO-Baru is that its leaders are a bunch of corrupt village idiots who have no sense of responsibility with regard to the use of the power of public office. Mahathir made sure of that. This nation is, therefore, in a leadership crisis. Tengku Razaleigh told me when we met two days ago that corruption is our No.1 enemy, and that I agree because corrupt leaders are in charge of the national till. –Din Merican

  3. Wrong, its not about the leaders alone. Like it or not its UMNO Baru – its a delusional horde that controls the country. Its the structural collapse of principles of the very idea of a nation. We are confirmed to be a nation in crises.

  4. David Smith, University of Sydney says this about the Far Right Tea Party cranks in the USA :

“The Tea Party completely terrorise the moderates within the Republican Party to the extent that there are really hardly any recognisable moderates left in the Republican Party. There might be some kind of thinking within the Democratic Party of actually in the long term, this is a good thing: just let the Republican Party become so extreme that it’s unelectable. But it’s going to do a huge amount of damage in the meantime”.

Sounds like the Far Rightists in UMNO Baru ! Extremists who think they can rule in multiethnic Malaysia without the support of ethnic minorities and without the support of 50% of the Malays.

  5. Great stuff, Mariam Mokhtar and I applaud you for calling this upstart an Imbecile though I could think of many more juicier titles for the likes of him and his associates all the way to his “Boss” and ex- bosses in UMNO.
Unfortunately you have left out a more “complete” review of his behavior and definitely his statements at the Malacca “event”. Or can we hope that you have reserved a more stinging and direct hit at this upstart for all he has said about the ‘shoot to kill’ policy (of his), the comments on gangsterism and by his own admission the closeness of UMNO AND HIMSELF possible to the Line Tiga Gang. And was I confused because I believe that he mentioned that the 4 UMNO candidates that he was endorsing at that particular ‘conference’ were leaders or whatever of Line Tiga? If so, Najib should be questioned about the fact that UMNO is actually a party which openly has a Gang of thugs (not that the Rakyat already know or at least suspect) in their fold, primed to cause mischief?

  6. How could undesirable and unsuitable people be elected to position of power, trust and influence?

We are not talking of a few but many in all levels.

  7. More than an Imbecile, he will be the reason and cause of Be=End Dum-No’s exit in the next GE 14 ! So, yes there will be no more Peee_M’s post to worry about , and he will be automatically entitled the PM-in-waiting vacant post till eternity…..good for him

  8. UMNO barking dog leaders are playing the game of ” DIVIDE and RULE” Mamak Kutty perfected during his tenure as PM for two decades . All the talk of ensuring equity of wealth between races is just diversion, to confuse their fellow Malays, when they (UMNOPUTRAS and feudal elites) are all in drunken stupor cavorting on their immense wealth through plundering and corrupt practices in dealing with government coffers for decades. Even an idiot would know that there cannot be “equality of wealth” even within a family, what more in a country !! Bodoh will always remain Bodoh !!

  9. Malaysia is going to the ‘xxxs’. Say what you like. Hope whatever you may. Use whatever strong words to protest, set as many NGOs but all will only led to nothing…no use. Malaysian has elected a BULLY to govern. GE 13 was our chance for changes but we blew it. 49% of Malaysian are actually corrupted.

What is the strength of this site and the many alike….none. We can’t even lift a finger to influence all these wrong doings but the government can lock you up for any remarks they deem offensives and can do it ‘legally’ for they have the laws with them.

Now, the reality is, Malaysia will only get to be more Malay, more Muslim and more UMNO. The government know it that is why our leaders behaviors likewise. And the only solution is get OUT.

I post this not to throw cold water to those who have hopes for Malaysia. I post because I resent not having any of my children living with me. It’s a dilemma for both, myself and wife. All these years we are struggling to decide whether to let our children stay or go. But no thanks to our Home Minister now we know we have made the right decisions, although now my house lack the joy of life as the days descend on me and my wife.

  10. You may call Zahid an imbecile but he is the new ‘Sheriff’ to the UMNOputras. GE14 is still a long way off. An exPM had said before that once elected, the government will rule the way it sees fit. Like it or not, corrupt village idiots are now ruling supreme in Malaysia.

  11. Look at George Patton. Even though he’s a foul mouth figure, he commands respect. Zahid is nothing as compared to this man

    ______________
Sorry George, you spoke too soon. The Americans lost in Vietnam, got screwed in Iraq, and are failing in Afghanistan. –Din Merican

  12. As I said in a previous post in this blog, what can the rest of us do? Nothing! We just have to bear with this imbecile for the next 4-5 years and worse, with an equally imbecile boss too…

If the Malays in this country don’t lead and change the way it is now, nothing the rest of the other races can do…. if we have people like Tengku Razaleigh who will only talk and talk until the cows come home, nothing will happen.

  13. the script was written and the stage was set to create a Land of muslims with the super race leading them. to where? this drama will go on at all cost as umno has taken all the neccessary precautionary measures to prevent a defeat. even if they were to lose they have their second line of defence which is all the ‘independent’ government institutions.

does MIC, MCA or Hindraf pondans have anything to say?

  14. Zahid has been used by Najib as a tool to vandalise the oppositions, the media and the rakyat. He once made use of Hishamuddin but he was weak and soft like pondan, so Najib switched their position…and it works.

  15. Thank Ai,
People like me can’t express well with words like many posters here. Much of the discussions are intended for the politicians and has no value for layperson like me. Normal ordinarily folks preferred more tangible results that are practical.
Life is getting harder. It will be worst for the coming generations. So, what are our so called elected rep doing beside big mouthing. Malaysia has no policy they can be proud of. Go head, name one that is not tinted. Most investments failed not because of external issues. Most are eaten up by the every person entrusted. We have rules, laws etc, but all these are being abused. We have the every police force out to shot first and talk later.
Are there hopes? Yes, but from whom? Of course, ourselves, Malaysian and the 49% who voted for BN.
Our destiny depend on ourselves to elect committed leaders whose only wish is for the well-being of the place they called home which our present leaders have no such commitment. If this continue, Malaysia is going to the ‘xxxs’.

  16. This is a response to that imbecile Home Minister how the americans willing to enlist the americans with japs ancestry. Of course, american government did intern the japs during the war

  17. My question is simple; WHAT THE HELL IS THE NATIONAL UNION OF JOURNALISTS GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS?

Well, they or editors or whomever else in the media can write letters and list their grouses but I think the best way to treat this minister or any other person who believes they can threaten journalists is to boycott them and their press conferences. Well, we are all too aware that some government owned media will still attend, but still, MalaysiaKini, Malaysia Insider or whomever else should apply some pressure on the limp NUJ to make sure this sort of behaviour of intimidating or threatening journalists is stopped immediately.
