Wisma Putra’s ill-considered move that could impinge on German-Malaysian Relations

Malaysia has summoned Germany’s Ambassador after the embassy reportedly funded an opposition-leaning human rights organisation that has accused the government of corruption.

The group, Suaram, launched a complaint in a French court earlier this year accusing Prime Minister Najib Razak and others over a 2002 deal to buy two submarines from France.

“The action of the German embassy can be misconstrued and be seen as interference in the domestic affairs of a sovereign state,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement late Thursday.

“Malaysia is deeply disappointed to learn that the embassy is engaged in such activities that show its partiality to certain issues that have implications on Malaysia’s domestic situation.”

The embassy declined to make an immediate comment Friday. But German Ambassador Guenter Gruber was quoted by the national news agency Bernama earlier this week as saying that the funding was for a one-off project in 2010.

Suaram, whose accounts are being investigated by authorities, has accused the government of harassment after it alleged corruption during the purchase of the two Scorpene submarines while Najib was Defence Minister.

“This ongoing political intimidation and harassment against Suaram is proof that the government is determined to silent critical voices,” Suaram said in a statement on Wednesday.

Najib, who must face elections by the middle of next year, has been touting a reform agenda, including scrapping a strict security law that allowed for indefinite detention without trial.

But critics have dismissed his reforms as an insincere ploy to win back support after the 2008 elections, when the Barisan Nasional coalition lost its customary two-thirds parliamentary majority in its worst showing ever.

  1. Desperate people do desperate (and stupid) things and with the type of officers and gatekeepers surrounding the prime minister, of course the emperor is always in new clothes and look awesome… he is even thinking of going Oppa Gangnam Style with the nation’s youth… ouch!

  2. why? Suaram is not banned in malaysia. Gunter Grube has said that they supported financially(with a small amount) a workshop in which a few Suaram reps took part.
are they angry because the germans refused to support Perkasa financially inspite of them using the Nazi propaganda technique?
the government is getting jumpy day by day.

  3. This is the second time this year that Wisma Putra has summoned an Ambassador. The first was the Singapore High Commissioner over Bersih 3.0. Both were asked why their missions interfered in our internal affairs. Singapore gave Wisma Putra a very good answer. Let us hope the Germans would respond to this charge in a strongly worded message in equal measure.

The next time, Wisma Putra should summon the Australian High Commission, the Embassy of the United States of America, the Russian Embassy and the Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China. Our small brained diplomats have nothing better to do except to play domestic politics to ampu their political masters. If they have any guts, they should respond to my remarks.–Din Merican

  4. Our small brained diplomats…- Dato Din

They think they can treat foreign diplomats like Pakatan Rakyat politicians (short of sending to Sg Buloh or Kamunting). As I said, “mahu tunjuk pandai tapi jadi bodoh sombong”….

  5. When you “summon” an Ambassador to the Foreign Ministry it is usually not made public. You talk to him and expalin your position bearing in mind all the time that the objective is to allow him to have your right of way.

  6. WELL SAID DATO’ DINO.
Small brains becos we do not have anymore qualified and capable DI-PLO-MATS!
NOBODY – that is good & capable would like to be linked with such morons in the ministry!
    Jadi LEMBU nanti pulak!

  7. Aiya why blame the officers serving in Wisma Putra. It is a political decision by the political masters ( perhaps the cabinet} and undertaken by our useless FM Musa Amman himself for the open funding by the Germans to SUARAM !! Pea brained officers would not have the BALLS to do so lah !!! Civil servants in Malaysia are all castrated lah , after 55 years of UMNO/BN and that is why it is no longer attracting brains like our blog host as in the past !!!!

  8. replacing bad laws with more restrictive laws? thats reform? before it can repeal sedition act, police gonna use the archaic law to charge two for mooning?
sounds more like a “not true” democrat, no?

  9. It’s the ‘mens rea’ that counts, though the ‘actus rea’ of supporting Suaram workshop may be dubious…What’s the real intention of the Germans then??…lending a helping hand for an NGO that politically inclined to the opposition??…My 10 year old son can tell the real motives..!! The Germans should give their support to Perkasa too, not financiallly though…Only then can they be seen as ‘fair and square’, otherwise Perkasa will haunt them afterWisma Putra has finished their business with the Geremans…

  10. It’s a cheap politically motivated publicity stunt by wisma Putra. While it is the right of a host country to summon a foreign envoy to convey displeasure, such matters are normally conducted with appropriate decorum. Putting out a public statement as wisma putra did clearly demonstrates a lack of civility. The Germans should respond equally strongly.

I would not be surprised. It is all just a show. These summonings will be widely reported in the MSM to show that PR and the pesky NGOs are really foreign agents and that the BN government had acted strongly for the ‘national interest’ by reprimanding the ambassadors. The replies from the ambassadors will hardly be mentioned in the MSM.

In its desperation, the BN government has now tarnished its international diplomatic credentials in favour of its local political maneuvering and manipulation.
