Be Patient, Sabahans and Sarawakians: Wait for Another 55 Years

by Hazlan Zakaria (09-06-12)@http://www.malaysiakini.com

The people of Sabah and Sarawak must be patient to wait for natural resources to be extracted and foreign investments to materialise before experiencing the same tempo of development as those in the Peninsula.

This was said by former  Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamed when fielding questions in a meet and greet session with government retirees and NGOs in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur today.”In truth, I think that the development of Sabah and Sarawak has outstripped the Peninsula.

Sarawak has the highest foreign direct investment and Sabah has the largest reserves of petroleum in the country.”Just be patient and wait for the resources to be extracted and soon your earnings (and development) will increase,” he continued. He was answering a question from a Sabahan who wondered why after 55 years of voting BN and having contributed a lot to the coalition’s electoral victories, Sabah and Sarawak are still considerably backward in terms of development compared to the frenetic pace seen in the peninsula.

 Devil’ remark just an analogy

Mahathir also hit out at those who made much ado about his ‘Devil they know” remark.”Those comments can only come from those who do not understand… It is an English saying.”

He explained that it is an analogy that uses the devil to explain that people are often better off depending on someone they are familiar with, rather than trusting an unknown and untested party.
The saying, countered Mahathir, has nothing to do with the devil per se. He was asked on comments from certain quarters who want him to recant his words and repent to God for talking about associating with the devil.

  1. Yes, Sabahans and Sarawakians, be patient. Let Mahathir and his cohort steal your vast resources. Being poor is not a sin. After all, you have allowed greedy politicians in your state and leaders from the Peninsula to rob you. What is new? Listen to this idiotic Perkasa patron and accept his advice.

If you miss your chance in the coming GE-13 to make a difference, you deserve to remain poor and neglected. Cry Geranimo.

  2. How many more years the Sabahans and Sarawakians have to be patient. 55 years is almost 2 generations. Reclaim what is yours and kick out these West Malaysian pirates.
The two states are rich in natural resources and you can fend for yourself if the resources are used wisely and for development. Don’t be fooled any longer and be left behind. You hold BN’s future in your hands and they need your votes to keep them in power. Show them the true meaning of a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

  3. This Mamak forgot what he did when he was in charge. Unless Sabahans and Sarawakians realise that they deserve a much better deal and assert their rights come GE-13, they will vote in UMNO-BN and give Najib the mandate to exploit them. They much change and make their states great again. End UMNO-BN colonialism once and for all. It is now or never.

Gurdashan, hey brother. Can you send Bendover and Goolbuttock Singh to straighten the man out for his own good. The man just won’t leave the job.Make sure you bring lawyer/attorney Bean along.–Din Merican

  4. Looks like it is MahaMamak who couldn’t understand English idioms. How about just don’t talk the talk but walk the talk? Action speaks louder than words, when are you going to declare your assets? Or is it a case of Money Talks, Bullshit Walks?

  5. We have been conned by him for more than 25years. He skrewed up the education systems, he skrewed up our good races relationship, he skrewed up the judiaciary systems and many more.
If Sabahan & Sarawakian listen & trusted his words, that the doom of your part & don’t blame us for not warning you.
When I see him name, I couldn’t help and would like to tell him off in the most disgusting words that is in my mind. I hold back because I have better values than him.

  6. Tun Mahathir will never change his ideas & opinions about what is good for Malaysia and he will never cease expressing them, as an emphasis of his own freedom of speech, as long as people never tire of asking for his comments. Tun has his own ways – “My Way” as the song goes, which he loves. Many others may disagree.

  7. Our claim on civility rests on how we treat our minorities. To determine the status quo, there are many nuetral observers who can judge using universally accepted political, social and economic benchmarks.

For the sake of our future generation particularly for the underpriviledged both in East and West Malaysia, the IMPLEMENTATION of basic foundation of the Federation of Malaysia has to be re-examined: The Malaysia Agreement (Cobbold Commission), the 20 point Agreement, the 18 point Agreement and the Batu Oath. Bi-partisan commitment is needed to stop this issue from becoming a political football it is now or else it will threaten the very foundation of our Federation in the medium and long term.

To have a fair and transparent treatment of this sensitive subject we have to have a decent and fair access to information to both the literates and the illiterates, the initiated and the uninitiated. This is obviously easier said than done and ask those involved in matters of public interest how humongous this task is.

But tackle we must since to ignore it is to court disaster.

  8. Firstly, Sabah and Sarawak does not belong to Malaya. They joined Malaya to form Malaysia in hoping to broke for a better future (that include Singapore and Brunei but they pulled out when the offered deals were not ideal for their people). Sabah and Sarawak are not only robbed and now humiliated to be told to be patient? What has the joining gained? Nothing. They are still being portrayed as people living in the jungle on top of tress. Why, photos appeared on the media always reflect that they are the uncivilised lots.

Sabah and Sarawak rightfully belongs the natives who are now digressed to either 3rd or 4th class “bumis”. The natives privileges are worst than that of the Malay. They are not an Islamic State. Not sure what they are but definitely not Islamic. And with strong leaders they can proposed to be independent with a referendum.

The then leaders of Sabah and Sarawak sold their states for not negotiating for the betterment of their people like Brunei and Singapore. And throughout the years their natural resources are draining to the West. Sabah is the living example after UMNO came in. Most of the huge businesses belong to the West.

Sarawak is more fortunate because the CM cares for himself more and realised that Sarawak needs to protect it boundary especially from the West. And imposes work permit for all. By default the CM deserved to be credited. Sarawak fate will be similar to those of Sabah if UMNO is permitted in. A blessing in disguise.

Nobody is certain what will be of Sabah and Sarawak then when they joined Malaya but now they should have learned that to continue living within the BN concept they will lose out. Over 40 years of partnerships have proven that. History has distorted to favour the ruling BN.

Other developed nations having more developing constraints and sharing the same period of development as Malaysia have fared better many times. One undeniable nation is the little red dot down south. Now we are hearing that we are losing out to Indonesian and Indo-China which is totally unacceptable because by comparison Malaysia fare better in infrastructural and head start other than the infamous day light corruptions and a system of continue depressing the unprivileged races and religions.

Must Malaysian be taught of how to love our country. No, we live to love Malaysia. We need no history lesson for that. What is lacking is civic mindedness. In the old days our education include Civic. We don’t need morals. Morals are job for parents. Civic is for all. A newspaper reports that Telecom disconnect the services of a few villages in Sarawak because telecom had it with cable theft. So is there a moral lesson involved or a civic one? This is the sign of a failed education system to teach Civic to all at a young age. It is not history. Malaysia under BN is so backward and how are we to complete with the ever developing world. Our priorities are so backdated. The only thing we are improving is our digressing standing in this developing world and corruption is the weapon.

This posting is out of frustration after my breakfast news reading. Imaging almost wasted my two eggs, two toasts and a cup of local coffee at my favourite coffee shop after reading that young Malaysian don’t love their country because of poor history lesson. It is more political than about the desire to educate our next generation. This is so BS.

You can only do one or the other. You cannot straighten the old goat and bend him at the same time. It’s going to be more than just a little problematic.

  10. Din .I thought Sabah is part of the Philippines.Just imagine if Tunku did not take them to join Malaysia, the Kadazan and other Sabah natives will remain backward like Sulu and Mindano.Same goes to Sarawak Dayak. They will still remain under Raja Putih.

  11. As a Sabahan living away in another country I can just tell this PERKASA claimed wise man to look into why most Sabahan left. Sabahan and Sarawakian do not have the kind of dangerous norm of KETUAN MELAYU and will never never wish to be fooled by anyone. We are happy with our lives and respect every one culture and race . There is no KETUAN MELAYU please leave us alone. For developments we have enough of those promises again and again. Each time one or a few Sabahan/Sarawak Polician fired up to leave then some minor changes or attentions are rewarded to us. PERKASA please shut up.

  12. West Malaysia is very rich in resourses and are these resources depleting?? Are there people here who are filthy rich and some are in dire straits??? Common man , you brothers from Sabah and Sarawak- do you want to share the same fate as us in the peninsular Malaysia? This GE 13 is your good chance, You miss it this time, there wont be another time for at least another few generations. So dont miss it. Here in the west, we are all ready to vote for the PKR. Dont be trick.

  13. “Just imagine if Tungku didnot take them to join Malaysia,The Kadazan and other Sabah native will remain backward like Sulu and Mindano.Same goes to Serawak Dayak” — Hamid “Ghurka”

Ergo Malaya should remain a colony under the British because with them you would do better than mispel the name of your country’s first Prime Minister fifty years later.

  14. Sabahans and Sarawakians deserve to have the government they voted for, this is democracy, no? You voted Mahathir you will get him for life! So shaddup and enjoy Mahathir!

  15. My fellow Malaysians in Sabah and Sarawak,

I was in the Foreign Service (in 1963) when Malaysia was formed. At that time, we had high expectations for our country and for you. We were alll badly let down. You must blame your leaders as well. They were party to all the deals which Mahathir and his cohorts did. Please hold your greedy politicians to account.

You have to decide soon whether you want the status quo where you are second class citizens whose resources are being piundered by our current national leaders or change so that you can get a better deal. That is a decision you must make.–Din Merican

  16. Common all you good people out there. Please believe what Dato Din who was once in the foreign service said above.

Please tell these good people in east malaysia to wise up and vote correctly and have a good and bright future. Dont believe what was reported in the Star today which said that we must retain bn in govt inorder to ensure the soverenity and harmony in the nation. What the f…..king logic?

Please look at Penang and Kelantan. Are we not having our peace and good life?

  17. Guys & gals,
While I agree that sarawakians & Sabahans must woke up from the slumber, let me set some records straights. Sabah did see government changed hands the most. Usno to berjaya to PBS to umno. While in Sarawak, the only good thing Taib has done is to prevent umno getting into sarawak

  18. From a man who clearly passed his ‘sell by’ date. I wish we report nothing of this man’s lack of wisdom and logic. History would unveil what a person he was during his active years and readers can then form their judgement but I almost suspect what their views would be.
    ______________
History will make an assessment of his record as Prime Minister, no doubt. But we have to deal with him in the here and now. His arguments and views must be challenged especially of those of a self serving kind. I disagree with him, but try to do that with respect. He should stop calling him names like Mamak Kutty, Apanama, etc. –Din Merican
