Mahathir-Jack Abramoff Link: Report made to MACC

by Susan Loone@www.malaysiakini.com

PKR today lodged a report at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (Penang branch) on what they described as the misappropiation of funds by the federal government to pay an extreme lobbyist to boost the country’s image overseas.

Balik Pulau PKR parliamentarian Yusmadi Yusoff, who lodged the report, claimed the government under ex-premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad had paid millions to a lobbyist in America to boost his image in the international arena since 2005.

He alleged that the government had engaged “extreme” lobbyist like Jack Abramoff (left), who has been found guilty of illegal activities, to prop-up Malaysia’s falling global reputation.

“But since the MACC can only begin to investigate when a report is lodged, it is my responsibility to make the report now,” he told reporters before going into the MACC office.

“This issue may not have received much attention here but it is well known in America,” he added. Yusmadi was referring to a June 22, 2006, report titled ‘Gimme Five: Investigation on Tribal Lobbying Matters’, commissioned by the US Senate Committee of Indian Affairs.

The 300-paged report focused on a two-year investigation into the affairs of Abramoff, who had pleaded guilty for defrauding a number of Native American tribes who had sought his services in establishing their gambling operations.

The probe resulted in the discovery of documents relating to the lobbyist’s work for the Malaysian government. It is believed that the payment – made to bogus think-tank American International Centre – by the Malaysian Embassy in Washington DC was for Abramoff’s services in organising a meeting with former US President George W. Bush in 2002.

In February, 2006, when questioned on the matter, Mahathir (with George W. Bush right) admitted that US$1.2 million was paid to organise the meeting but denied the money came from the Malaysian government.

“I understood some people paid a sum of money to lobbyists in America but I do not know who these people were and it was not the Malaysian government,” Mahathir was reported as saying in the media.

Renewed interest in the case comes in the wake of criticisms against Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s statement supporting Israel in a recent interview with Asian Wall Street Journal.

Anwar said his statement supporting the security of Israel is contingent on the creation of an independent Palestine state and respecting the rights of its people based on the two-state solution.

Anwar’s supporters have been going on a campaign to prove the Malaysian government’s hypocrisy in condemning the former when it has trade relations with Israel.

Malaysia’s foreign policies not strategic

Yusmadi urged the MACC to investigate the case, saying that it is understandable if the government seeks foreign advisors to advice it on policy matters. However, he added, in doing so, the Malaysian government should at no time seek advice through “illegal, dubious or criminal arrangements”.

He criticised the country’s foreign policies as lacking in strategy and attraction, saying they do not benefit Malaysians but was more towards foreigners. One of the reasons for this, he added, was due to the government’s lack of interest in empowering its own civil service.

“The country has been put in a contentious state due to our dis-empowered civil service, that we need to seek advice from foreigners. The country’s policies can only be attractive to all if we have competent officers, with good policies, come good reputation,” he added.

NONEHe noted that under current Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak (left), several overseas appointments – special envoys – have been made for BN leaders such as former MCA presidet Ong Ka Ting (China), former MIC president S. Samy Vellu (India) and former Rompin UMNO MP Jamaluddin Jarjis (the US).

“Rest assured that if Pakatan Rakyat takes over Putrajaya in the coming general election, we will abolish all these positions, which is a wastage of public funds,” he said.

Yusmadi was accompanied by pro-PKR NGO Jingga 13 who carried placards with photos of Mahathir and Bush, and carried them silently outside the MACC building before the report was lodged.

Penang Jingga 13 representative Amizuddin Amat urged the MACC to probe the matter “seriously, diligently, and courageously”. “If they fail to do so, we might have to make a trip to the US to see if we could dig up more details on this case,” he added.

  1. The Balik Pulau MP should know that the MACC will not investigate this UMNO icon. Furthermore, this PKR move is a politically motivated one, made to divert attention. Anwar is being crucified for his perceived pro-Israel comments in the AWSJ. Don’t waste time and get on with other pressing issues. Mahathir treats this PKR move by Yusmadi as a “big” joke. Kichi, kichi.

  3. Mahathir pays Abramoff (the subsequently convicted lobbyist)some US$ 2 mil. to get a handshake with George Bush, to satisfy his ego to be seen on the world stage. Najib pays APCO to get a handshake with OBAMA to get early recognition and acceptance as PM Malaysia, get to visit his USA based children and to enable FLOM to shop and splurge in the shopping mecca of the world ( New York) . Tax money down the drain.!! Much criticised Wisma Putra officials which appeared in this blog, were there all the same to provide logistics viz. booking VIP rooms, cars and planes etc, etc…

  4. You can’t blame the Wisma Putra officials and embessy Staffs. They have to follow their Tai Koh order from UmporNO Anifah Bukitaman. The embassey staffs will be like Bangla workers working days and nights to entertain this ruscles during their visits.Wasting tax payers monies, like their great, great grandfather monies. Enough is enough for UMporNO, better don’t contest in the 13 GE, and wasting more tax payer monies.

  5. Mahathir was right, the Malaysian Government did not pay Abramoff any money. It was paid by Jamaludin Jarjis using TNB money. He was TNB Chairman then. He was trying to ingratiate himself to Mahathir.
He built an expensive horse ranch ( supposedly an equestrian club) at UNITEN Bangi, and housed Mahathir’s expensive (RM 1mil) horse that was given as a present by some Arab Sheikh. Of course TNB paid for all the horse’s food and care.
He got what he wanted by getting to build an expensive(more than 1.5times cost ) a branch campus of UNITEN in the outbacks of Muadzam Shah in his Rompin constituency.!! The contractors were all his cronies from Rompin…

  6. In many Third World countries governments do want to empower their people to do anything. Watch the news and you will see for yourself how the third rate education system in Third Worlld countries is slowly making the brains of the people to take residence in the muscles of their feet. And what makes it all the more deceptive is that the people do not know that they are being rendered useless. The ultimate form of control is when you do not know that you are being coerced.

And today, many of these events are taking place in a very transparent manner in Third World Countries. When it happens in such a manner where is comon knowledge to all then there are no witnesses and we are all become accomplices. Winners are making history and the losers are writing it.

  7. The money used to pay Abramoff came from Tenaga.Tenaga acquire the coal mine in Kalimantan for $450 ringgit. It a scam. The coal mine was bought by Malaysian party for only US$5 m.A lot of people was involve including Megat Jun id and Tan Sri Chan Lip Keong.I was told Royal family of Pahang involve.J.Jarjis was Tenaga Chairman.Chan Lip Keong make the contact with Abromff thro a CIA agent in Combodia.Chan Lip Keong operate a casino in Combodia.Eventually Tenaga had to write off this $450 investment in Coal mine.Is this not a scandal.

  8. I don’t know where the money came from in Malaysia – TNB or where else — but it is a fact that the checks to the ghost think tank, the phony American International Center, came from the Embassy of Malaysia. So at that point, it was “official money,” no matter what Mahathir says. The US Senate Committee that did the investigation (referred to in the article above) had both the invoice to the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy (Fauziah) and also the checks.

  9. Madir had a passion , he build buildings the way Nimrod did. He wanted to reach for the skies. By virtue of his earthly position , he couldnt afford to be seen in casinos so he gamble away malaysia’s fortune via forex. He craved for power so bad that he mercilessly ordered the incaceration of his deputy , had the mechanics of his administration issue fake documents to aliens to boost his gripped on the far stretches of the kingdom and ultimately he had his men bribed a sadduce to meet and shake the hands the leader of a powerful empire akin to the Pharoas of ancient Egypt . This chapter on the reigns of Madir in the book of revelation was however struck out by early biblical scholars because Madir was neither jew nor gentile…. He was MAMAK

  10. You can make all the reports you want.

When law enforcement and the judicial branch which is the third pillar of government acts like it is part of the executive and when the executive branch of the government is the appendage of the political machinery of the ruling party, we get a conflict of interest situation. And when the judicial branch acts in tandem with law enforcement rather than a referee, we have a justice system gone wild.

And not just gals gone wild now that Spring is upon us.

  11. Let’s understand first that lobbying in Washington D.C. is legal. It is a free speech right which is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. What got lobbyists into hot water (many have been jailed or/and fined) is their failure to observe the strict rules like failure to register, over billing of clients, gifts to Congresspersons and the lack of transparency. Governance becomes an issue with the U.S. government. But the U.S. goverment is not on trial here.

The issue is what crime or crimes did Mahathir commit in the U.S. as Prime Minister of Malaysia. Abramoff went to jail for crimes he committed in the U.S. He has broken U.S. laws.

The U.S. government apparently has the evidence (which found its way into U.S. possession as part of the investigation into the activities of Abramoff) needed to prosecute Mahathir Mohamad (assuming crimes were committed) when he as Prime Minister used government funds (read: taxpayer money) to secure what many in the opposition claim as nothing more than a photoshoot with the then U.S. President in the Oval Office. Was there a national interest to protect? Was Malaysia’s Prime Minister merely trying to correct the image of his country abroad as haven for terrorists – a legitimate and growing concern for the country’s foreign policy think tanks. Or is it just an example of the Malaysian government wasting taxpayer money? Since when is wasting taxpayer money a crime?

Guess then who has the authority to request for copies of the evidence?

Loony Loone does nothing more than tell us what we already know.
