MCA is fast becoming irrelevant, says Ong Tee Keat

As MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek addressed the party at its 58th annual general assembly today, his predecessor went on an all-out attack against its current leaders on Twitter.

Former MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat has accused the party’s top echelon of fast becoming irrelevant for not heeding the call to reform by its ethnic support base after suffering big losses in Election 2008 — winning only 15 of the 40 federal and 32 of the 90 state seats it contested.

Ong’s words have drawn the ire of MCA colleagues Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who sought yesterday to dismiss both the remarks and their as baseless.

“Tiong Lai and Ka Siong denied MCA is irrelevant. It’s now in both irrelevance and denial syndrome,” Ong replied today in another post on Twitter while Dr Chua was speaking on stage.

“Tiong Lai’s denial of MCA’s irrelevance is nothing great if compared to his denial in the Tung Shin incident,” the Pandan MP said of his party deputy president.

The MCA maverick also took a swipe at Wee, who is the party’s Youth chief, for the low turnout at his wing’s AGM yesterday.

“Wow, MCA registered 27,000 new members, but only 30 per cent delegates attended Ka Siong’s Youth AGM. Time for him to cry genuinely,” he mocked, on Twitter.

“MCA Youth delegates offended by Wee Ka Siong’s words against me said he is expecting favour from Soi Lek,” Ong added.

Ong was nowhere to be seen at the Dewan San Choon in the MCA headquarters here during Dr Chua’s presidential address.

The former transport minister told The Malaysian Insider in an interview last week that the Barisan Nasional (BN) component has not heeded the push for reform that saw the party lose 25 of the 40 federal and 59 of the 90 state seats it contested in Election 2008.

“MCA is still stuck in the mindset of being gungho with statements instead of delivering good governance. It is parroting old polemic rather than delivering reforms asked for by voters,” Ong said.

“If MCA continues on this same old path and psyche, then it is certainly headed for irrelevance. Some have bluntly said we are already irrelevant,” he added.

Ong, who was deposed as MCA boss by Dr Chua in a fractious power struggle 18 months ago, has admitted his failure to convince the party to change its mindset during his short-lived term in office. But he took pride in being responsible for opening investigations into the RM12.5 billion Port Klang Free Zone scandal even though senior officers told him it was a closed case.

  1. As I have said before, Tee Keat was a strong MCA President who could stand up for its membership body. Unfortunately, he lost his post to the more pliable Chua Soi Lek. Let us now wait and see whether the MCA can help Barisan Nasional win more seats in Parliament.–Din Merican

  2. Tourman53 may be correct.MCA began well based on the principle Money Controlls All. But today the money is controlled by Khazana, PNB, EPF, and Amana Saham.

  3. Datuk,
Those who do not know Cantonese may not appreciate the irony of the MCA AGM being held in Dewan San Choon. Phonetically, “San Choon” in Cantonese means ” grow balls “… How appropriate.

  4. OTK has his own lil skeletons, but at least he stood up for his principles. The rotten towkay-porn politics in his dastardly party will make sure he rides into oblivion, without pencen. Forget about being Twittering idiot, sniping from the sidelines. MCA or rather UMNO, doesn’t want him, nor anybody who still has half a cojones.

My advice to him is to defect and take his coterie of admirers out and join PKR, which at the moment seem lopsided. But then he has to cope with Tian Chua, Jimmy and Dr Lee B.C., which i think he can. Will win hands down in Pandan again. DAP will not accept him, but is pragmatic enough to work with him. Time to rise above racist politics.

But.., he won’t, because it’s in his nature and nurture. Who knows?

  5. 3 articles in a row for Malaysian Comedians Association?
That’s a first for you, Din. MCA, like UMNO, is behind on too many things.
Even a New Deal is a NO DEAL.
    _________
Yes, Bobby. MCA’s plight is worthy of our attention. This is case study of what happens when the leadership compromises itself, instead of setting an example of how best to serve its membership. Sorry to see the MCA of Tan Cheng Lock and Tan Siew Sin degenerate badly. Without the support of the Chinese community, MCA cannot win sufficient seats to be a force within Barisan Nasional. It is no comfort to think that Tsu Koon’s Gerakan is worse.–Din Merican

  6. MCA is irrelevant due to the party could not represent the majority of Chinese in Malaysia. Its members, founders and leaders like Tan Cheng Lok and Tan Siew Sin, etc were if not all are Chinese illiterates, most of them are English educated businessmen, not politicians.

MCA could not perform its political roles although they were in Alliances and BN government monopolized by UMNO.

A few good MCA past leaders like Dr. Lim Chong Eu, Lee San Choon and Lee Kim Sai, etc could not play their rightful roles effectively in the Alliances and BN, eventually being manipulated out!

The current President, Dr. Chua Soi Lek knows the situation well!

  7. Its members, founders and leaders like Tan Cheng Lok and Tan Siew Sin, etc were if not all are Chinese illiterates,-rightways

The stupidity in an inherent sino-centric argument. The Chinese language does not contribute to the technical and scientific progress of human civilisation in gthe 20 and 21 century.

The Chinese language is a backward language in as far as a language for science and technology in the modern world. China is now learning the english language and forced to produce journals in the english language so that its innovations and findings are recognised internationally.

Only sino-centri idiots keeping on harping on the importance of Chinese literacy,

  8. The Chinese language is a backward language in as far as a language for science and technology in the modern world. -Frank

Clearly, such mindsets and impressions were obsolete advices from the colonial-era masters treating you like toys, pets, dogs, idiots and stupidity.

  9. The Chinese language does not contribute to the technical and scientific progress of human civilisation in gthe 20 and 21 century.- Frank

Barking the wrong tree, must be rootless!

A mere English axe to grind about is insufficient in today’s world, millions of scientific research papers are in facts published in Chinese! China’s rise don’t depend on English languages, Frank .
