Another UMNO Hack Job

by Din Merican

On February 24, Center for Strategic and International Studies based in Washington DC will host several representatives of the UMNO ruling party for a “seminar” on Governance and the Rule of Law in Malaysia & Malaysian Legislative Initiatives. The program is as follows according to an email I received from CSIS Senior Advisor for Southeast Asia Ernie Bower (Partner at BrooksBowerAsia).

As an aside I have met Ernie and found him to be a reasonable person just trying to make a dollar in Asia, but  I am somewhat surprised that even he would stoop so low as to share a stage with this group.  In 2004 there is a statement attributed to him “Though [Ernie] Bower and [Karen] Brooks are close to many ASEAN leaders, they said they would not act as a lobby group or as “agents” for Southeast Asian governments in Washington. That’s obviously not true.

Here is a copy of the email:

Those of you who wish to attend, or register a protest,
please send an email to SoutheastAsia@csis.org
or call Mary Beth Whyel at +12027753278.
Don’t abuse her though…she’s just the messenger.

The invite says “CSIS Malaysia is honored to invite you to a presentation and discussion with a panel of leading Malaysian officials with the responsibility for the legislative agenda, parliamentary affairs, governance, rule of law and anti-corruption initiatives in Malaysia.”

Of course its nothing new for K street think tanks to be used by lobbyists for political stunts like this. [Read this article on Democracy Now] This is what companies like APCO promise when they receive contacts in the amount of RM 20 million. They promise to place your client in prominent speaking venues in Washington DC and get you meetings with key political figures.

So on this trip we should not be surprised that Nazri, Gani and Abdul Hamid will try to pay calls on Capitol Hill to Senator John Kerry, Congressman Richard Berman, and whoever else is willing to open their doors to these groveling dogs.

If they were sent to talk about rule of law and governance then the topic of their lecture should be the the decreipt condition of Malaysia’s judiciary starting with the 1988 Crisis, followed by the handling of Anwar IBrahims 1998 trial and then the most embarrassing incident of the VK Lingam tape, which led to the findings of a Royal Commission confirming that there is political and corporate interference in the appointment of judges and decision of cases.

They should admit that nothing has been done to restore confidence in the system and some paltry reforms that have been made are inconsequential.  They should talk about how corporations in Malaysia prefer to have their disputes resolved in Singapore or Hong Kong courts. They should talk about Perak and the illegal overthrow of a democratically elected government.

Instead, these individuals will talk about the Judicial Appointments Commission and the revised MACC laws passed a year ago. They will pat themselves on the back for three minutes and then immediately start their barrage of attacks on Anwar Ibrahim, who they will say is being tried under the laws of Malaysia and will be given a fair trial.

I am all for free speech and the Malaysian government should be allowed to represent its position. But to send government officials to basically go lobby K street on behalf of Saiful Bukhari is pretty pathetic. I don’t think it’s a good use of taxpayer dollars and I do think it makes a further mockery of our government and the elected officials in the Barisan Nasional.

APCO, I’m very disappointed. You’ve been at it for a year now. And this is all you have to show for it?  By the end of 2010 it is a fact that the nail will be hammered into the coffin of 1Malaysia. Najib will continue to cower in front of foreign media over his inability to answer questions about caning, church bombings, murdered Mongolians, submarines that don’t sink, 2 missing jet-engines and  Anwar’s trial.  Malaysia’s reputation will continue to sink and slide, money will continue to leave the country and Malaysians will continue to migrate overseas.

And the best you can do is send Gani Patail to talk about the Rule of Law? Really?  You sent the former head of the MACC to talk about anti-corruption the same week that the autopsy of Teoh Beng Hock is being released?  Why don’t you send Musa Hasan as well to talk about how crime rates have increased geometrically in the last decade and prisoners are routinely killed and abused while in custody? And maybe throw in a few officials involved in human trafficking?  Do you think the Americans are that dumb to not see through this charade?

And then to top it off you have JJ (Jamaludin Jaris) there as well. The racist, butt pinching representative of the Malaysian people in America.

Right now Malaysia’s foreign policy consists of one thing and one thing only and that is demonising Anwar Ibrahim and spending as much money as they can to compete with his strong international networking. It’s not a surprise that MPs and politicians around the world with a shred of credibility are speaking out in his favour. He has cultivated strong relationships over the last three decades premised on a commitment to some basic principles of good governance, pluralism and democracy.

I look forward to hearing back from my friends in  Washington DC how this event goes. I expect  US media to be present and to grill these clowns. I expect friends and supporters of Anwar Ibrahim, KeADILan and Pakatan Rakyat to be present and show strength. I don’t expect anyone in the policy making establishment to take this delegation seriously. I expect CSIS to make some easy money in hosting this event. And we’ll be laughed at even more as the useless trial to incarcerate Anwar Ibrahim slogs on.

  1. Din,

I think Pakatan should send a strong delegation to this APCO meeting with detail compilation of the wrongdoings/legal misrepresentations, rule of law, custodial deaths, Perak fiasco, fabrication of lies and denial of evidences, rising racism, fraud etc which the delegation is bound by convention to answer.

This delegation should not be given a chance to misrepresent the people of Malaysia.

If the need arises to bear the cost of sending an effective Pakatan delegation as well as the Bar Council members, a public donation drive can be intiated.

  2. To believe a word of garbage from BN and UMNO lapdogs would be tantamount to raping old and incapacitated old prostitutes. These dogs are prostituting themselves to the world at large, pissing on any lamp posts wherever they happen to limp by!

  3. yes… these are real-life clowns, idiots, puppets, …. ah whateverlah… Malaysia will soon doom. Frtunately, we can still vote them out in next GE.

  4. This is stretching our imagination too far. What are these three bumpkins up to? Selling Bolehland to Uncle Sam? They can’t even represent themselves let alone the country. It’s a sheer waste of taxpayers’ money.

Nazri, Ghani Petai, Hamid Gurkha and booty-pinching Jarjis on a roadshow in Washington? Do they take Americans for fools?

Come on Jibby, use your thick head. These morons will catapult you into the dustbin of history for good.

  5. Din,

Salam & Regards. Agreed with MSlam that PKRM should send a delegation to attend the forum and grill Gani, Nazri and the other monkeys. But as APCO is the organizer (correct me if I am wrong), will they allow a PKRM delegation to attend the forum. And while the PKRM delegation is there, they should also counter all the lies APCO is spewing on behalf of the Najis.

    David

  6. Hi Din, I think this is the real brochure:- JJ will talk about “How You Can Improve Your Fingers Muscles By Using My Pinching Techniques”. Nazri will talk about, “My Experience – How You Too Can Live With Foot In The Mouth Disease”. And Gani Patail will deliver a talk on “Why It Is Important To Change Your Mattress Often”. During coffee break, the trio will be doing a slide presentation explaining how 9/11 was created using Avatar’s technology. At night, the trio will be test reading the script for sequel of Brokeback Mountain, entitled “Sodomy 2: How We Finally Broke Anwar’s Back”. And on their last day, a seminar will be conducted addressing the Republicans, entitled “Watergate – Why Nixon Should Have Let UMNO Handle It”.

  7. Its travelling & entertainment time again I presume, just like Raja Nazrin always does reading hollow speeches from a from 6 ( lower ) wannabe economics/political student ! The Malaysian trajedy now spins to the USA, not that there is anything except your money and mine sinks again deep. They have taken the fine art of hypocrisy and lying overseas once more courtesy of some &5$(uck*&G American gold diggers.

  8. Aye Yah! Poor Malaysia – emabarrassed again at the hands of these monkeys. When will it end?
However, we must put our faith in the fact that the Amercians are pretty smart people especially if they know anything at all about Malaysia – after all Malaysia’s really not at the forefront of international politics (just international murder, corruption, abuse of power and caned females {but not the men involved}). I think we can take heart that this too will fail to make the impact the govt so hopes for – they’ve cried wolf one too many times!

  9. There is no more law required in this Bodohland and Bolehland, Whatever the UMNO warlords says GO !
We need a mutiny to get rid of all the warlords!
We need to bring back our country to JUSTICE and EQUALITY !

We are all doomed, look at the judges and what they have to say:

    DSAI sodomy trials
    Teoh BH – case
    Kugans – case
    Perak MB haram
    “ALLAH” issues

Why do we need these moronic judges and badminton courts ?

So many other cases which are clear cut cases have been left aside and NFA !

    To name a few:

    Lingam head
    BULL Head
    PIG heads
    TOYO’s Head
    Nasir Satar idiot headless cow
so many previous heads…..all left aside

  10. The invitation list for this seminar looks like the Mafia in Malaysia that is guilty of ‘Travesty Of Justice’ to not only malaysians at large but to Anwar twice in 12 years.
Just check this out. There were only 2 cases of sodomy in the malaysian courts in the past 13 years and both involves Anwar the opposition leader as the defendant?!And in the second sodomy charge in 13 years, the complainant had visited Najb[the present PM] twice before the date sodomy took place and once after but before a Police Report! And mind you, Najib ‘s reaction to the press was that he did not meet the complainant. He later admitted but says that the compalinent came to see him about a scholarship. Scholarship, when he is known to be a drop out at the a lacol university?!
Ghani Patel decides for Najib, who is to be charged and will not be.

  11. Haiti? What’s that got to do with these screwfly maggots?
But i certainly like the tone of this oral fixation cause, courtesy of apco. DC is the place where all bad rubbish collects. Ancient Rome was another.

  12. “And then to top it off you have JJ there as well. The racist, butt fondling representative of the Malaysian people in America.”

It is ok to fondle but just make sure the asses you fondle are not those of your staff and certainly not at taxpayer expense.

  13. ” So on this trip we should not be surprised that Nazri, Gani and Abdul Hamid will try to pay calls on Capitol Hill to Senator John Kerry, Congressman Richard Berman, and whoever else is willing to open their doors to these groveling dogs.”

That would be a mistake of gigantic proportions that will remain unsurpassed for a very long time. It would be like surrendering the country’s sovereignty. No can do. Don’t think they’ll do.

  14. “In 2004 there is a statement attributed to him “Though [Ernie] Bower and [Karen] Brooks are close to many ASEAN leaders, they said they would not act as a lobby group or as “agents” for Southeast Asian governments in Washington. That’s obviously not true.”

Who is to know if you’re not lobbying except those who you lobby for?

  15. din,

I met Ernie many years ago when he was heading the Business council and I do hope he is not taken in with the lobby and be straight forward with these 3 stooges. Nevertheless i’ve written to CSIS highlighting a few areas which they may want to discuss with the 3 stooges. It is a joke and insult to us and the CSIS

  16. Actually, I see it as a great opportunity for people to show them up properly. They are well exposed, without recourse to their minders who can cut off the questioners first. Position the inquisitors well and they’ll look like the real idiots we know they are. And, even better, on the world stage. 🙂

  17. My god, this is what our hard earned money goes. This paid lobbyist do nothing for the rakyat but try to paint a nice picture of the BN government. I got news for you, the leaders in Washington already know the facts about Malaysia. They are not going to be fooled by some nice catching headline by lobbyist. I am also disgusted with APCO for stooping so low for the money. They behave like beggars.

  18. I want you guys to know that I KNOW you have (1) the right to expression, and (2) the right, frankly, to not like bolehland clowns. But literally thousands of bolehland inhabitants DO like bolehland clowns, and seek redemption in these ” bolehland clowns and court jesters” every day. While you do have the right to expression, you do not have the right to slanderize the entire bolehland clowning industry, nor any particular ” bolehland clown” therein.

Send in the clowns , I say

  19. darn – more tax payer’s money goes down the drain. the 3 speakers or more plus supporting cast. all flying biz class and staying in 4-5 star hotel.

    another exercise in futility!

  20. Thank you, Din, for your excellent write-up, for “telling it like it is”, and not holding back.
I am sick at heart to read and hear about the ghastly things that are going on in my country, Malaysia. (I live and work overseas.)
My thoughts and prayers are with Anwar. I hope to God that one day he will triumph over all the evil that surrounds him and be the next Prime Minister. I have visions of myself marching jubilantly through the streets of KL without any fear of being hosed down as I was in 1998.
God bless you and keep you safe. Thanks, again.

  21. If the conduct of Anifah Aman at the press conference with Hilary Clinton some time ago was anything to go by, we’ll be witnessing another farce of clumsy efforts to defend the actions of the Malaysian govt. Asking the very perpetrators of lawlessness to speak on good governance and rule of law is like getting Hitler to speak about the goodness of the Jews.

  22. The AG has been flying around for some time. Remember, even the jet engines in South America required his personal legal touch, being completely beyond the legal capabilities within the police. Meanwhile, how many cases are postponed despite the so-called KPIs aka NKRAs?

  23. Mr. Din, allow me to change your write-up’s title.

UMNO hack team doing the “Blowjob” and tks to APCO & its K street critoris…

no offend intended to the UMNO Hack Team but you did a good blowjob.

  24. What is the possibility to do a peaceful protest outside of the CSIS on the day the 3 dogs come and highlight the hypocrisy of the whole setup?

Then that’ll be RM20million down the drain and flush out this shennanigan, and actually will help the cause for a more just, plural, cohesive MALAYSIA-for-ALL-MALAYSIANS campaign.

Just a thought. Anyone living around DC (or the East Coast) willing to participate?
    _________
Bob, I am disappointed with CSIS. I would have thought that they would be more aware of what is happening to the Rule of Law in Malaysia. Instead, they invited those directly involved in the wanton and systematic destruction of our judiciary to speak on the subject. I have written to my friend in CSIS and told him that his think tank was insensitive. He told me that he respected my views.–Din Merican

  26. I do agree with slam, lots of malaysian here at Oz are disgusted with the horrific happenings in M’sia. Should the need arises, we will definitely pass our hats around to collect funds to sponsor PKR to set a strong delegation to DC disclosing the misdeeds and wrongdoings of the present administration.
