Despatches from Permatang Pauh No.2 : Election Fever Grips Permatang Pauh

Permatang Pasir
August 15, 2008 (7.15 pm)

In case you are wondering why I am in Permatang Pauh, may I say that I am here as a special aide to Dato Zahrain Mohamed Hashim, KeADILan’s Penang State Chief. My terms of reference are to act as liaison with outstation bloggers and local NGOs and other civil society groups and to accompany him on the Anwar Ibrahim’s campaign rounds and report on developments so that Malaysian and overseas readers, who are interested in the by-elections are kept up to date.

My report this time concerns the visit to Permatang Pasir where Anwar Ibrahim addressed some 500 supporters and helpers of PAS. It was held at the modest home of Ustaz (Teacher) Hamdan of PAS.

As usual Anwar was very punchy and entertaining as well when he took the stands to motivate them for nomination day tomorrow and geared them for what promises tobe a long and bruising 10 day campaign period. He opened his speech by reminding them that this by-election was not about a contest between Anwar Ibrahim and UMNO’s Ariff Shah. Much is at stake in the coming days and they must stay determined and focused on ensuring that Pakatan Rakyat wins the by-elections with a convincing margin. What is at issue is the future of Malaysia which is in dire need of change. He stressed that they should no longer accept UMNO’s mismanagement of the economy and abuse of power by its leaders.

He said that the partnership of PKR, PAS and DAP in Pakatan Rakyat is strong, although the Malay mainstream media like Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian have been trying their utmost to show that there are serious differences between the leaders with the coalition. The fact that PAS’ leaders like Nik Aziz and Hadi Awang and others will be speaking at ceramahs throughout the campaign period shows that Pakatan remains strong in their resolve to make the partnership work, and to ensure that Anwar Ibrahim enters Parliament on August 27, 2008 as the new leader of the Opposition and from there to Putrajaya as Prime Minister.

He made it clear that the rights of the Malays and the status of Islam as enshrined in the constitution will not be compromised when Pakatan Rakyat forms the next government. All partners in the coalition are with him on this matter. Furthermore, this is his sacred duty as a Malay and a Muslim. But as a leader of Malaysia and good Muslim, he will also defend the rights of non-Muslims and ensure that as Malaysians, we all live in harmony. He will focus on the Rule of Law and rebuilding the economy so that there will be jobs and opportunities for all.

He expressed confidence that Permatang Pauh will remain in Pakatan’s hands after August 26, 2008, but he was not taking anything for granted. He wanted them to work hard and be vigilant and appealed to his audience that they should pray to God for his victory.

He has received information that the UMNO-BN political machine is determined to ensure that he will be defeated by all means imaginable. He is very concerned that Badawi and his colleagues are still trying to find ways to disqualify him. If they cannot do so on nomination day, then they will play dirty politics.

In fact, he said that he was advised that members of Puteri UMNO were on house to house campaign to buy voters. In exchange for payment, a voter must give a copy of the identity card. I was told by some people in Bukit Mertajam yesterday that the going rate is between rm1000 and rm1500. Anwar advised his audience that given his knowledge of the people in Permatang Pauh, he was confident that they would vote with their conscience, not be tempted by such gesture.

Tonight, he will be at two ceramahs in Kampung Telok and Penanti before retiring for a well deserved rest—Din Merican

  1. Wish all the very best, with the retiring of hassan merican don’t be surprised if the going rate goes up by another thousand.Din it is people like you, rpk, harris and others that give hope to us average MALAYSIANS.Make DSAI the PM and i believe our country will have hope. GOD BLESS OUR BELOVED MALAYSIA.

  2. A caution on copies of IC given to anyone.

In the GE2008, many surfers managed to list out names and variants, names-names, names-addresses, names-ages were discovered in the spooky SPR database/ databases.

If they’re enticing for copies of ICs, I hope that indicates that SPR are wary of dirty tricks. Although with UMNO flushed with cash, many will have trembling hands and and weak knees.

I would go round and advise against giving out copies of ICs, even to PR workers, just in case!

Otherwise, there’ll be more risks of PR eating buah pauh! πŸ˜‰

  3. Din

Summarising Anwar’s ceramah and speeches is not effective.

Try to get help from your PR colleagues to video tape his ceramahs and put it on Youtube or on Google video.

Then bloggers can spread it around on the blogs.

For someone like Anwar, it is his oratory that moves people… and that is what is needed.

If Anwar’s speeches are in Malay, have it subtitled in English or Chinese.

  4. Dear Mr Merican,

So sorry for not meeting with you today as I had intended. Family obligations kept me occupied until 10.45pm which I felt was too late to call you given your hectic day ahead.

I will try again sometime midweek.

By the way, I wrote a piece on the allocation of RM1m to the 5 Chinese schools in my blog.

Though I’m not in Permatang Pauh in person, I would still like to contribute to Anwar’s return to parliament.

I hope you will understand my shortcomings.

  6. Romerz,

You seem naive in your approach to issues.

This kind of government spending is similar to pork barrel spending by the U.S. government. Heard of pork barrel politics?

  7. The Election Offences Act 1954: a person deemd guilty of the offence of ‘bribery’ is

“(a) every person who, before, during or after an election, directly or indirectly, by himself or by any other person on his behalf, gives, lends, or agrees to give or lend, or offers, promises, or promises to procure or to endeavour to procure, any money or valuable consideration to or for any elector or voter, or to or for any person on behalf of any elector or voter or to or for any other person, in order to induce any elector or voter to vote or refrain from voting, or corruptly does any such act as aforesaid on account of such elector or voter having voted or refrained from voting at any election”

  8. Dear Mr bean,

Yes I am naive in so far as politics is concerned. Until 8 March I had no interest whatsoever.

No, I’ve not heard of pork barrel spending. Maybe I should have. Would you care to enlighten me?

It is for this reason that I think what I say may appeal to other other non-political savvy Malaysians out there for what I say came from the heart and not from a political angle!

Please explain further to my simple mind.

  9. That is only ‘bribery’. What about ‘corrupt practices”?

UMNO would challenge the results of elections they lost in the past, led by UMNO lawyer Zaki and would win all their cases.

  10. To expect our Elections Commission to be neutral is like expecting our civil service to observe the doctrine of neutrality (of the civil service).

Our civil service has long abadoned the doctrine of civil service neutraility and has become an appendage of the UMNO machinery – not even BN.

  11. I am unable to sleep. Rest well Mr. Din . All of you need the rest and strength to stand with DSAI. I send my best wishes to all the bloggers out there. I applaud you guys and A special good luck wish to my dear RPK and of course to you Mr. Din and our prayers for the victory to Democracy and Hope –
    DATO SERI ANWAR IBRAHIM.

  12. VOTE FOR ANWAR – MOVEMENT FOR CHANGE

I was with a few friends in Bukit Mertajam today. We then took a trip to the KeADILan operations center, which during normal days would take 10 minutes, today took more than 20 minutes. It will get worse tomorrow and the following ten days. Kuala Lumpur vehicles started jamming the streets of Permatang Pauh, Kubang Semang, Tanah Liat, Penanti and Bukit Mertajam.

Most of the people we talk to in the streets have pretty much decided on their vote. They look forward to welcoming home the favorite son of Permatang Pauh. They also like the idea of becoming the constituent of the Prime Minister.

KeADIlan’s machinery looks stable in the hands of the experience and hardworking YB Dato Zahrain Mohamed Hasim, the election Operations Director Mustafa and the tireless YB Haji Abdul Malik Kassim

The forthcoming 10 days would be very exciting and challenging too for KeADILan.

  13. Din Ahmad,

Please also describe for us here what you eat and what you drink πŸ™‚ Do you get to stop and eat durian or mangosteen along the way? What kueh do you get to eat? What kopi do you get to drink? What ice kachang? Please put pics of the food and the drinks πŸ™‚

Can you get nasi kandar in Permatang Pauh or Tanah Liat or Cerok Tok’un?

  14. Great Din Ahmad. Nice of you to keep us updated on situation on ‘ground zero’ . I’m about to log out, it’s late have a meeting tomorrow. Thanks.

  15. Kacau lah you Dr Bean! What for saliva dripping pun tak dapat. Yeah durian season, kueh mueh plenty! Nasi kandar Penang, best! hahaha! πŸ˜€

  16. Din,

I will curse you if there is no standby independent candidate 2moro in case anything happens to Anwar. I have been saying this for 1 week now. Now, you see this Sinful has “sweared” on Hadhari Book (Not the Quran) as far as I’m concerned, anything may happen to Anwar. Take note.

Please tell Anwar to swear tomorrow and deny BN any reason to demonise him. It is critical that that’s done.

  17. Wakie! Wakie! Those staying in Hotel California between Jalan Batang Berjuntai and Jalan McAlistter. Wake up you love birds!! Time to move that ass and get to work. You got an election to win.

  18. Salak,

Is it too late to call for a UN supervised and monitored election? πŸ™‚ – Mr Bean

We have better! We have RPK there! πŸ˜‰

Someone must tickle him to get him excited!!!

I have no feel for the place yet, Bean! Need more info. Din Ahmad has given some, bet he’ll give more! Photos – more photos, no need for award winning ones! Shoot anything that’s typical of Permatang Pauh, and where there’s people!!! People, get a feel of people, lah!!!

    Some from H E R E !

  19. Abdul,

If you doubt Din, don’t doubt Anwar!

The expanse of his outlook would ensure little things are taken care. He’s taken greater risks, and he’ll take on bigger ones!

Having said that, it’s good to worry a little! πŸ˜‰

  20. Salak,

That poster of Anwar anywhere else should be enough to lose the election for him! But then this is Permatang Pauh. Nobody knows better than those competing and those helping the competitors to compete.

As for the photograph of the hand-shake, I can identify with the one on the right because of the height of his songkok πŸ™‚

  21. “How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?…

Yes, and how many years can some people exist
Before they’re allowed to be free?…

The answer myfriend, is blowin’ in the wind. The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind”

    Will Anwar win?

My prediction is he’ll win but by a smaller margin than is generally believed! Those candidates will split the votes and those vote buying and election rigging will come very close to upsetting the results!

  22. Election fever has spread through the whole country is all eyes and ears for news and pictures!

Vote Anwar – Movement for Change! It’s now or never and send all those evil doers and corrupt to HELL!

  23. 250 grams best Arabica Beans Malaysian money can buy, says Shah Shah or Nyah Nyah or whatever his name is will not get more than 10,000 votes!

    Any takers? πŸ˜€
