Even Students are giving Badawi a tough time!!

Students give Pak Lah tough time
Andrew Ong August 2, 2008
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was put on the defensive when he was asked a wide range of thorny questions by students during a forum today.

MCPX

Students queried the prime minister after he had delivered his keynote address at the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, with questions including:

• In achieving 2020, are we on schedule?

• I wish to join the civil service, but the civil service doesn’t seem to be colour blind. What will be done to redeem the image of the civil service?

• Will there be more public debates between the cabinet members and the opposition on government policies?

• What is the role of the government in holistic development?

• You have called yourself colour blind, but what is your view on our quota system? It is still more racial rather than community- based. Secondly, what is your views on protecting minorities rather than majorities?

• I want to know how do you feel about promises that you have not kept. I don’t want to know what you’re going to do, but I want to know how you feel, towards us, the people you are responsible for.

Vision 2020

Many of the questions were met with loud applause from the floor and often drew smiles from Abdullah along with Education Minister Hishammuddin Hussein who was seated next to him.

student leaders summit 020808 abdullahOn Vision 2020 – a plan for Malaysia to achieve developed nation status – Abdullah said that Malaysia would meet the target provided that an annual growth rate of six percent is achieved.

“(But) we have problems now, due to increase in the price of oil and inflation,” said Abdullah, adding that the government has allocated large amounts of money to meet the target.

“We are determined to fight and we must not give up”, he added.

One student urged Abdullah to take action against “irresponsible politicians” for making irresponsible comments, to which the prime minister replied that he would “correct” such errant politicians.

He said that he would continue to remind politicians to exercise restraint and moderation.

Unkept promises

On the civil service, Abdullah said that the government was progressively making changes to make the civil service reflective of the composition of society.

He agreed that there was not enough non-Malays in certain sectors of the civil service but the government had created other mechanisms to allow non-Malay participation.

“For example, we have the Anti-Inflation Council. We make sure that the members come from the private sector and also members who are non-Malays,” said Abdullah, adding that the government wants the council to be multi-racial.

He said that more of such institutions would be established to ensure that government policies are not being designed by one racial group.

student leaders summit 020808 participantsOn unkept promises, Abdullah said that the Barisan Nasional 2004 election manifesto was not designed with a five-year time frame, but a plan towards Vision 2020.

“It doesn’t matter whether I will be around or not,” he said, adding that the government has already established a plan to implement the election promises.

He cites reforming the Anti-Corruption Agency and the judiciary as among examples of promises which are in the midst of being fulfilled.

Abdullah said that it takes time to change the attitude of the people in order for the government to fulfil its agenda to encouraging transparency, accountability and openness.

“I’m not saying this as an excuse … social changes do take time as opposed to physical and structural changes,” he added.

Speech topic

However, Abdullah’s response to the question of the government’s role in holistic development drew the loudest reaction from the floor.

The student said the topic was something which Abdullah did not address in his speech, drawing loud applause from the floor.

Following this, Abdullah sought a clarification from the student who posed the question, apparently oblivious that the topic for his keynote address listed in the event’s itinerary was Holistic Development and the role of the Government.

“Holistic apa?… Where did I say so in my speech? Are you looking at it? Oh, you are (referring) to the title of my speech!” exclaimed Abdullah, leading to laughter, applause and then loud murmurs from the 500-odd participants.

He did not touch on the intended topic during his keynote address but instead delivered a 40-minute off-the-cuff address to the students on a wide range of topics.

The prime minister cut short the session and did not attend the scheduled press conference after the event as he has to catch a 5pm flight to Sarawak.

  1. No match to this lady of virtue.

Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah is a spotless woman of courage, integrity, credibility, humility and has a disposition worthy of being emulated. Every woman, mother, sister, wife who stands virtuous before God and her man will be able to spot the beauty of this lady miles away.

But to our beleaguered PM, she is not worthy before her voters. Oh my God, there he goes again shooting himself in his foot. And likewise his predecessor had nothing but venomous statements about her. Do we still call them ‘gentlemen’?

Ask any right thinking citizen and they will easily re-affirm that there are none in the country within the hallways of the ruling government party (BN) who can or have spouses to match Dr. Wan’s resolute will, commitment and loyalty to country and citizens alike.

This is not the time to feel slighted dear politicians if your wives do not measure up to the public opinion. The same goes to all you women politicians who stand before the rakyat in soiled fabrics of self-glory, corruption and deceit.

Dr. Wan Azizah is one woman who has never uttered any profanity or curses unlike one infamous Minister who is known to freely use the four-letter word even in her own office.

Dr. Wan Azizah is also completely clean and clear of any form of corruption and misplaced abuse of power unlike other BN women leaders who have scandals after scandals layered over them. Never mind the un-ending stories that the staff of these corrupt women leaders trade within family circles.

Take a look at how humbly Dr. Wan dresses and take a peep at the obnoxious jewels decking the others. The non-verbal message cannot lie Madame politicians!

And when you see this lady of hope, you also cannot miss seeing the fine daughter she has raised. Let us not forget that this young girl felled a seasoned veteran. That in itself speaks volumes.

And of course, at the helm is the man of the moment DSAI who the forces are trying to kill and at all costs – latest being that a BN mole is already walking within the corridors of the US government to bribe his way through.

Let us not forget that when the court finally threw out the first sodomy charges, the former PM never even apologized to Dr Wan and us all citizens. In Malay we say ‘kejam’.

With the entire nation of God fearing, loyal and patriotic citizens praying for Dr Wan and her family, we know God will not let us down. Viva Malaysia!

Lovrenciear, a very good tribute to Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah. We in PKR are extremely proud of our President. Her record is impeccable.

I know that the people of Permatang Pauh will overwhelmingly endorse her choice of Anwar Ibrahim to represent them in Parliament. It is Anwar’s return to his old constituency after a long absence. But we are not taking anything for granted because the UMNO-BN clique will pump in lots of money for the by-election, causing a mini boom to that local economy and they will try to cheat in collusion with the Elections Commission.

Let us hope voters in Permatang Pauh support their local boy and hero, and give the UMNO-BN candidate, even if he is that presumptuous Ezam Noor, a bloody thump.—Din Merican

  2. Dear Din, I attended this summit last year when it was first organized. This year’s the second one. Last year, Badawi was listed as one of the speakers but he didnt make it. The whole summit was boring indeed. I guess it can only be interesting if they invite Anwar Ibrahim to speak. Enough said..

    Cheerio, -Chin.
    ____________
Chin, no question about the fact that Anwar will win over the students by his intellectualism, and in terms of eloquence and content, he is in a class way above Badawi. The Prime Minister is weak, weary and thoroughly lacking in intellectual power.—Din Merican

  3. With more students and young people like them (who ask relevant questions and don’t go shooting off with racist statements), God willing, we can see a new dawn for Malaysia.
    __________
Su, you need a new picture so that I can see you. Yes, a new dawn awaits us and we in PKR/PR are working very hard to make sure it becomes reality.I want talented people like you and others abroad to return home to contribute and prosper in a Malaysia we can proudly call home. It will be my final contribution to our country as I will be a septuagenarian in May, 2009 with a decade to go before I join the ranks of octogenarians, God willing.—Din Merican

  4. The students are more politically aware of the current situations then the sleeping Pee M! Perhaps he should quit and go back to school!
    ___________
kcee, the man called Badawi is irredeemable, to set in his ways and nothing happens to Malaysia except further deterioration in economic fundamentals, unless he is thrown out of office by UMNO and us Malaysians. He is just a disaster for all of us. For that, we must be grateful to Tun Dr.Mahathir bin Mohamad.—Din Merican

  5. “One student urged Abdullah to take action against “irresponsible politicians” for making irresponsible comments, to which the prime minister replied that he would “correct” such errant politicians. ”

    – Since when has this PM ever been in control of his bunch of monkeys? He has never been respected or seen by them as a “Leader”. He has been challenged left right and centre by those from within his camp and snakes are aplenty and he still hasn’t realised it, or has he?

He tried to show his arrogance to the people of Malaysia, forgot who put him on that chair when he said : “Saya pantang dicabar” and see what happened? That defiance to the rakyat resulted in 5 states of Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor went to Pakatan Rakyat!

If he continues to be led by his bunch of rapacious goons around him, blind and insensitive to ‘conspiracy’ against Anwar Ibrahim, he will soon find himself without a jo after being ousted out by the same forces. With a most ‘powerful’ position in the government – PM of a country, and to have to come to a situation as is now, he is one BIG shame and disaster!

He is at the edge about to fall and those conspirators are also about to tip him over, sooner than he realises. It’s all about political will, it’s up to him -to go in shame without a fight or as Bill Clinton once said, “in the depth of winter, you can still force a spring”!
    ___________
Thanks, jong. I am surprised you have not hammered Tun Dr. Mahathir who chose Badawi as successor.–Din Merican.

  6. I am fully convinced that Mahathir chose Badawi simply because he thought that this fool of a man would easily be manipulated from behind the scene, not realising that this man is just as greedy and selfish as he Mahathir – a greedy fool will do just as much damage as a smart fool. The entire UMNO leadership is beset with fools who must be brought down. Malaysia needs to be rescued from this impending disaster should UMNO continue to dominate our political landscape.

  7. “With the entire nation of God fearing, loyal and patriotic citizens praying for Dr Wan and her family, we know God will not let us down. Viva Malaysia!”

Let’s not burden God with our problems! God is busy right now in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  8. Dr Bean
God is never busy and always have time to entertain those that offer a supplication to him Remember God says “Ask and it shall be given”
Let’s not be like those BN Hadhari politicians who have forgotten God and his mercy. Yet God grants them their request for even the haram stuff. But God is all knowing. He taketh what he giveth.

Shrek talks to God daily. 10-4

  9. Dr Bean

God does not work on dirty laundry list he he he

Not giving does not mean God does not take notice. Perhaps some of the things on your list is not good for you. God knows better.

Shrek thank God every not just Friday (TGIF) 10-4
