Mahathir irked over questions of nepotism in Sapura-Kencana deal with PETRONAS

by Koh Jun Lin@http://www.malaysiakini.com

Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was irked by questions from reporters today over a potential conflict of interest in a recent contract involving Petronas, in which he serves as an adviser.

NONELast week, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd reportedly awarded a RM700 million contract to a Sapura-Kencana Petroleum Bhd wholly-owned subsidiary. Mahathir’s son Mokhzani is a vice-chairperson of the latter company.

Mahathir replied in a sarcastic tone when asked during a press conference today whether there was conflict of interest in the deal.

“Yes of course, he (Mokhzani) is given it because I instructed Petronas. Put that in your paper.I presided over everything. I told them, please give to my son and not to anybody else. That’s what I have been doing all the time. When I was the prime minister, everything was given to my children. But when everything goes to the children of the other Prime Minister, you don’t want to mention because he is a nice man. He enables you to read, doesn’t he?” Mahathir said in reply.

Sapura-Kencana reportedly made two stock exchange filings on November 1, with one saying that its wholly-owned subsidiary Allied Marine & Equipment Sdn Bhd was awarded the contract for three-and a-half years of underwater services.

A separate deal was also filed on the same day, saying that another wholly-owned subsidiary, Kencana HL Sdn Bhd, secured a RM135.8 million contract from HESS Exploration and Production Malaysia BV for a gas project at the Kamelia field, supposedly 150km  northeast off the coast of Kota Bharu.

Following this, an oil royalty pressure group put together a poster featuring a map showing the location of the gas field, a screenshot of Sapura-Kencana’s website showing Mokhzani as one of its directors, and a news clipping of the two contracts, totalling RM836 million.

“Mahathir’s son gets RM836 million in projects via SapuraKencana Petroleum Bhd to extract Kelantan’s gas. The people of Kelantan don’t even get a single sen! We demand a five percent royalty or RM100 million a year from the gas revenue in Bunga Kamelia Well,” says the poster by Gabungan Profesional Tuntut Royalti, Pendaratan Minyak dan Gas ke Negeri Kelantan (Royalti).

  1. Mahathir says in his defence that some Prime Ministers do it while they are in office. In his case, he allowed his sons to do business after he had left office. That is not bad. However, nepotism is nepotism. –Din Merican

  2. This old goat cares little for the suffering rakyat, especially those in Opposition-held states. To him, it’s the end that justifies the means.

Al Kutty, your time is up lah. Just bugger off…

  3. That’s Mahathir! Always use reverse psychology to cover his wrongdoings. It might work before but the people have gotten smatter now. Adios Mahathir…

  4. And we dont have the actual figure of oil money till todate… A land blessed with oil money and today our belanja-wan runs into umpth defisit (some may counter that is not a bad thing) but the belanja-wan has a ratio of 80:20 favoring Opex!!! What a waste – the future genaration will refer this as a case study (so chedet, your wish that your deeds will not be forgoten will be granted)

  5. How can someone who is so young buy up USD2.9 billion worth of San Miguel Corporation? Or become a substantial owner of one of the biggest O&G player SapuraKencana? Or supply alloy wheels to both Perodua and Proton or all the rubber mouldings or all the tyres?

Once in the late 80s, when the daughter joined an advertising agency with Austen Zecha, it became the biggest billing advertising agency grabbing Proton, MAS, TDC (now known as Tourism Malaysia) all in one swoop… I guess it must be talent then, old man?

  6. Din.he he was the PM,he literally force MISC,a subsidary of Petronas to bailout Konsotium Perkapalan, and save his son Mirzan from bankrupcy. After the bailout, his son gave an interview with ASWJ,where he claim,Konsotioum make 300 m profit from the bailout.
Anwar was vary angry and he told Mahathir your son a lier and you are corruopted.
Mahathir was vary upset,He call Daim to plot the removal of Anwar from UM!MO and Govertment.

  7. To me, this is the crux of his emotional idiocy – emotional neanderthalism really. He just don’t get it why separating politics and business is simply a fundamental principle that should be held as high a standard as possible. Its why corruption is so rampant under him because he just don’t get it, there is no such thing as tolerating just ‘a little bit of corruption’.

Some principles are just very difficult to implement – impossible to be perfect – its all the more reason to keep to as high as standard as possible. But to Mahathir, he deem it OK to compromise for HIS OPINION OF JUSTICE but worst than that when his compromise perpetuate AN epidemic, he EXCUSES HIMSELF and those around him..

I have seen these kinds of money being made before in other countries – they don’t last more than a couple of generation – likewise Mahathir’s legacy won’t either..

  8. That shows how much influence this old man still have over M’sia politics. Jibgoh still have to kowtow to the mamak kutty. Sad state of a country in dire street.

  9. Taking a cheap shot on Pak Lah? So if Pak Lah did it, it’s okay for him to do it too? Didn’t he bailed out his son when he was the PM? I wish dr m would just disappear from the public.

  10. Dear Din Merican,

I am surprised today to find out that I am not allowed to comments. Why am I not allowed to the comments?

  11. Just “Irked over the question???”………..It is a luxury..
While the oppositon members would have been harrased, humiliated, and persecuted non-stop if any!

  12. that is a direct public admission by mahathir. shouldn’t he be questioned and charged in a court of law by the authorities?

  13. What kind of a warped logic is that? . . “When I was the prime minister, everything was given to my children. But when everything goes to the children of the other Prime Minister, you don’t want to mention because he is a nice man.” In other words he is saying he practices nepotism but so did the other PM so what’s the big deal.

  14. This guy is in his 2nd childhood and behaving like a real spoilt child, based on this extract of the report: “But when everything goes to the children of the other Prime Minister, you don’t want to because he is a nice man” my tears are all for you mamak kuti. Please grow up.

  15. Yes, he allowed his sons to do business after he left office, but, they accumulated wealth when he was in office. His eldest son was bailed out when he was outside of his office or by the side of his office, ai……. saya orang Melayu sudah lupa la!

  16. His defiance and contempt for the average Malaysian shows through !!! Mamak Kutty the Mighty Berok, and Nazri of Padang Rengas is a poor carbon copy !!! These two blokes are creating diversion at any cost as long as UMNO/BN can retain power and continue with their plundering ways !!!

  17. Of course this semi-divine figure of deception is irked by the how-dare-you- earthlings question his wisdom. He is all knowing, all compassionate and all altruistic. Having his integrity doubted is beyond comprehension.

You journalists, the self-appointed keeper of social consciousness were lucky to escape with his minor condescension as he is more than capable of displaying the full measure of his wrath.

Poor the wretched Kelantanese, their pleading for crumbs are totally ignored. When the great arbiter commands his court to declare off-shore wealth belongs to him, his family and his chosen few, you just shut-up and accept your fate.

But destiny has a way of manifesting itself to the Old Goat. From the height of glorification, his legacy is being questioned and in time it is not improbable that he would be called to account for his actions. And the verdict is anyone’s guess.

  18. Ai .. yaaa … was not this ass the prime minister when he directed Rafidah Aziz to award his son or sons with all the shares that they requested?

Looks like he is ” betul betul nyanyuk” .

  19. @ Atiff and Greenbug. these guys have got a lot of money to play with…remember, gambling with Forex by getting BNM involved to bet using Malaysia’s Reserve Fund, and we lost USD15.5 billion. i have a sneaky suspicion that 10% or 20% MAY have been collected overseas by these ” shrewd gamblers ” through the intermediary of Great Soros, no ?
Then again, EMAS ” Loss ” of RM 8 billion, merely a ‘wayang-kulit’ show thru’ ” Amicable settlement out of Court ” to hoodwink the public. Followed by the bail-out of Konsortium Perkapaln, it was said only RM 450million was paid to ” settle” the Hongkie guy in HongKong, through the intermediary of MISC, but funds taken out of Petronas RM1.2 billion…..
So now, this ” investment ” of Petronas money of USD 2 over billion, to ‘ buy ‘ San Miguel Corp of Phillipines, for what ? As if petroleum business in the Phillipines is lumbered with ” gold ” – tell you what. Nothing but to ” legitimise ” taking out of Petronas monies ” Overseas, perhaps in preparation……? ? DunNoWhat ?

  20. Nyanyuk? Please lah, not that again. Not even nyamuk, which has only six legs.
Okay.. I’ll close the vitriol with this presentation. Remember, Octo has eight legs for grasping, impaling, skewering and sucking. Like a Tick, or chigger (larval form). I couldn’t find anything about scrub typhus (endemic hereabouts) on youtube, but it’s the vector.

  21. I bet he is getting increasing bouts of insomnia these days.

Why? Because each day that the GE is delayed means greater risk that kleptocratic UMNO-BN regime will lose power.
Also, his bete noir DSAI is getting more and more political support over time.

  22. “Yes of course, he (Mokhzani) is given it because I instructed Petronas. Put that in your paper.I presided over everything. I told them, please give to my son and not to anybody else. That’s what I have been doing all the time. When I was the prime
minister, everything was given to my children. But when everything goes to the children of the other Prime Minister, you don’t want to mention because he is a nice man. He enables you to read, doesn’t he?” Mahathir said in reply.

I am happy that Dr Mahathir is now speaking the truth, the whole truth. All the other UMNO leaders should follow his example.
    _____________
Jack, you don’t now the real Mahathir. Tell what truth he is talking, He is very cynical in his comments.–Din Merican

  23. Just wondering whether the police or the MACC will be sending 15 or more of their staff to investigate this silly donkey’s corrupt ways!

  24. Mahathir once publicly complained that Petronas Chairman earns much more than him. Now the old cow is irked that a former PM’s family gained from govt contracts and no one questioned him. What this man is telling Malaysian is, ” if the former PM can have the spoils, so can I and if you don’t question him, you don’t question me. period ”

That ‘s Mahathir for you folks.

  25. What is new then. The Indian leaders in India have been doing this even before independence. There is nothing wrong is this kind of deals so long as you are on the right side! It goes on all the time and all over the Third World. And our friends in the First World condone it on the principle of ‘ pecuniar non olet’. Look now even Obama want to visit Burma.
