UMNO Ulama’s Racism is revolting

by Dr Ahmad Farouk Musa and Ahmad Fuad Rahmat

The riot at Merlimau, Melaka by anti-BERSIH, UMNO inspired youths is evidence of the increasing degree to which intimidation and violence is becoming a frequent strategy by certain players in the ruling power structure.

It was clear that the threat and intimidation were aimed against  those who were merely exercising their democratic right to voice their opinions on the policies of the current government.

Reports indicate the presence of Police officers at the location and yet why did they not stop the riot from happening? Is it not their duty to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their party affiliations?

Will Malaysia’s Muftis who so willingly spoke out against BERSIH also speak out against the Merlimau riot? Why do we not hear these Muftis now nagging about the limits of freedom and the importance of law and order in Islam?

Or, are the Merlimau rioters somehow exempted from the standards of good conduct simply by virtue of their racist-fascist beliefs and ethno-nationalist party affiliation?

Will we hear condemnation and obsession of what happened in Merlimau by the mainstream media? Or will their pages and airtime be channeled entirely towards demonizing the hard work of Malaysians from all races who are demanding genuine democratic reforms?

Those who are more alert to the real workings of Malaysian politics will rightly read those questions with cynicism. The point that cannot be denied is that we are witnessing is systematic terrorization to quell democratic dissent.

BERSIH was a clear set of demands for electoral reforms that have yet to be met. What happened in Merlimau – preceded by butt exercises, sexist and racist intimidation and harassment against innocent Malaysian citizens – is fascist inspired catharsis from unruly insecure thugs.

It does not require anyone the slightest minute of education to be racist and anti-democratic, and yet racism and anti-democracy have been the central values that have been constantly espoused by the ruling party.

It is also clear that the goal is not so much the enlightenment of Malaysian citizens but their subjugation in ignorance so that the elite of that party can continue to govern and enrich themselves with impunity.

Racism was even legitimised by a scholar of Ulama’ Muda UMNO recently who said that Prophet Muhammad was racist. It is not surprising then to see the escalation of prejudiced attitudes and policies that favour a certain race over others since that is now endorsed by UMNO religious scholars themselves.

As an Islamic organization, we are deeply saddened and outraged at the complicity of certain religious figures in tolerating UMNO’s constant recourse to thug violence and intimidation. Marx said that religion is the opium of the people. In Malaysia, we can now see who the dealers are.

Malaysiakini reports (05-21-12)

A liberal Muslim non-governmental organisation has raised its ire over the silence of religious leaders on a violent attack during a voters education campaign in Merlimau, Malacca.

NONEIslamic Renaissance Front (IRF) chairperson Ahmad Farouk Musa (left) said “many muftis” had spoken out against the BERSIH 3.0 rally on April 28, but have kept mum on acts by a rowdy mob which pelted participants and vehicles with eggs and stones at the campaign last Saturday.

“Will Malaysia’s many muftis who so willingly spoke out against BERSIH also speak out against the Merlimau riot?

“Why do we not hear these muftis now nagging about the limits of freedom and the importance of law and order in Islam?” asked Ahmad Farouk.

“Or, are the Merlimau rioters somehow exempted from the standards of good conduct simply by virtue of their racist-fascist beliefs and ethno-nationalist party affiliation?”

He lambasted the attackers, pointing out that intimidation and violence is becoming a frequent strategy by certain players in the ruling power structure.

He reasoned that BERSIH’s campaign was a democratic right in expressing opinion on the government’s policies.

NONEIn a statement today, Ahmad Farouk quizzed Police inaction over the attacks although the authorities were reported to have been present at the location.

“Is it not their duty to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their party affiliations?” he asked.

Calling the attacks a “systematic terrorisation to quell democratic dissent”, Ahmad Farouk said implementation of BERSIH’s demands for electoral reform are at stake.

“What happened in Merlimau – preceded by butt exercises, sexist and racist intimidation and harassment against innocent Malaysian citizens – is fascist-inspired catharsis from unruly, insecure thugs.

Home minister urged to intervene

“It is also clear that the goal is not so much the enlightenment of Malaysian citizens but their subjugation in ignorance so that the elite of that party can continue to govern and enrich themselves with impunity,” he said.

Meanwhile, Seputeh DAP parliamentarian Teresa Kok called on Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussien to act on the “targeted violence” at BERSIH co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan.

NONESeveral cars were damaged and some participants were injured in the Merlimau incident where stones and eggs were thrown by the rowdy mob.

Kok also lamented the silence of the authorities on the protest plans by petty traders to set up stalls outside Ambiga’s house, which could turn “uncontrollable and violent”.

“Given that such ‘unlicensed’ protest infringes on numerous national laws, such as Section 46 of the Streets, Drainage and Buildings Act and Section 110 of the Road Transport Act and, needless to say, infringing on Ambiga’s basic right to peace and security in her own home, the government and the Police have no excuse not to act against any future, planned unsavoury activity outside her house,” Kok added.

  1. It’s now UMNO Muslims versus other Muslims. First it was Muslims versus non Muslims, then it was UMNO Malay versus ordinary Malay and now this. Soon everyone will have to wear an arm band to signify their affiliation. Shucks what a country.

  2. This country is in a mess because the top leaders are using dirty methods and tactics to win votes – they don’t give two hoots how many die along the way as long as they get to retain power and sign the cheques!

  3. Even Canada has moved their Visa application and processing office to Singapore. Says a lot about their opinion of Malaysia. If they can they would probably close the Canadian High Commission in KL and have their High Commissioner in Singapore accredited to cover Malaysia.

Good idea. Apart from saving cost, this move can send a clear message to our Government. Canada is very passionate about human rights, freedom and democracy. Let us hope External Affairs Ministry in Ottawa will read this and decide to accept your proposal.–Din Merican

  4. ”It is also clear that the goal is not so much the enlightenment of Malaysian citizens but their subjugation in ignorance so that the elite of that party can continue to govern and enrich themselves with impunity”.

yes Sir, enlightenment of the malaysians were never their agenda but the reverse.just imagine, inspite of the purposeful obliteration of the then existing good education system, malaysia has bred many successful malay intellectuals and corporate figures. what would have been the result if our old education system had been retained and updated? why don’t we have capable politicians? we have them but the present political elite prefers no competition.
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man can be the King!

  5. I hope the ulamaks will tell these people how to behave in a more islamic way.

Yes, didi. I wonder what the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur is doing about these characters for painting the road in front of Ambiga’s house and for violating her rights to privacy and safety. Charge them since they can be identified from this video. We cannot have double standards, one for UMNO supporters and members and one for the rest of us.–Din Merican

  6. the biggest sin is that the good, the powerful and the capable among the rakyat choose to remain silent while the vile and stupid are leading the way ‘forward’!
didi, that video turns my stomach

  7. Pathetic, these kind of religious Bigots in mainstream Orthodoxy !

The Fart-was Stinks everywhere, coming from a remote village in the nook of Malaysia, which was once a place famous for their Sweet ” mahu beli Buah Limau-kah, yang sangat manis saperti Madu….?.” = All but gone to Fart ! They have just opened a Farting-factory !

  8. OMG. This is utter madness and they cannot even see it.Now even the Prophet is blamed for their rascist attitude. Wow. Such culture and religous teachings we are so proud off arent we the malays. Proud of our sindiran, perli, gossip, victim mentality, envy, power mad that even the Ular….maks are spreading hate. Wow. You malays must be so proud of yourselves right now. Vile.

  9. From the command of “Love thy neighbour” by Jesus ( pbuh) we have the legal doctrine of ‘who is you neighbour and the doctrine of legal duty of care was formed by Lord Aitkin. Such is the beauty of this command by God via Jesus (pbuh). Since Jesus is our Prophet, we , the moslems must obey this command and love our neighborus no matter who they are.

Not only is it a moral command it is now encoded in law to regulate human welfare and conduct one earth for Order.

You who profess to follow the commands of the Koran must REFRAIN from this wrong doing and obey the command of Jesus (pbuh), Nabi Isa to love thy neighbours or you WILL face the consequences.

  10. Mahathir’s UMNO Baru getting more and more fascist by the day.

Irony is that racism is an ideology imported from the West and which arose to justify Eurpean colonialism and imperialism.
The Human Genome project shows that the concept of “race”
has no scientific validity. There are only differences in gene frequencies,
    not biological races.

  11. Yes, didi. I wonder what the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur is doing about these characters for painting the road in front of Ambiga’s house and for violating her rights to privacy and safety. DATO DIN – DBKL IS ALSO ANOTHER SUBSIDIARY OF UMPORNO LA- THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING COZ DBKL STAND FOR “DEPA BAGI KUMPUL LUMBU’ – THAT UMPORNO MENTALITY LA- LUMBU EVERYWHERE? SIMILAR TO FART WAH COUNCIL – EVERYWHERE CAN FART LA????

  12. Canada moving their visa processing for Malaysians to Singapore….a big SLAP in the face for KL, as Singapore does not even have a High Commission/Embassy in Ottawa , Canada . Malaysia on the other hand is represented in Ottawa, and maintains a consulate in Vancouver. Hey Wisma Putra, any response to the Canadian move ???

  13. The use of religion (read: Islam) as a political tool should be banned. How do we know when race and religion are being used as a tool? Same way we know a duck when we see one. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and sounds like a duck what else could it be but a duck?

When that retard who claims to represent Malaysia’s ex-servicemen who for the most part served their country well and owner of a proud tradition , drags their name into the mud and says, “Kami orang Melayu, orang Islam. Kami tak minum 100Plus bottled water” it not only smacks of racism but it seeks to tap into the basest of human instincts.” Who gave him permission to speak for me?? It is time we legislate out this political tool used to manipulate the Malays.

UMNO right wingers led by Najib is guilty of it. Next time it could be Malay followers of PKR led by Anwar Ibrahim and PAS members.

Contrary to majority opinion, Article 3(1) of the country’s federal constitution does not allow for its use as a tool.

  14. Why do you need some one to be the intermediary between you and God ? God does not need an interpreter. You are blessed with a thinking brain to distinguish between right and wrong. There is absolutely no need any “authorized” personality to act as if their words were God’s gospel.

  15. Catholics need their pope. Muslim needs their imam. In the case of Catholics it is not that confusing because there can only be one Pope. If God’s presence in Man is what we need, which is what the sense of right and wrong is all about, who needs prophets? But right now the Mormons see Mitt Romney as their prophet, a candidate for the most powerful office in the world.

To those burger flippin’ losers whose public and orchestrated goyang of their teloq shriveled and ready to drop, apparently have failed to impress Ambiga, Najib is their prophet. Who is to say who is or who is not?
