Mahathir prefers his Crooked Bridge to Undersea Tunnel link to Singapore

by Shannon Teoh@http://www.themalaysianinsider

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has questioned whether an undersea tunnel proposed as a third link to Singapore is the best solution for growing traffic across the Tebrau Straits.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong confirmed earlier this week that both countries are studying the idea first mooted in November.

The former prime minister, who has continued to lobby for his ‘Crooked Bridge’ to replace the Causeway, said in a blog posting yesterday two tunnels might be required as the “bridge that will not be built now (was) planned to have eight lanes.”

Dr Mahathir said the tunnel would have to begin far inland to ensure a gentle gradient for heavy vehicles especially if the Singapore MRT is to use it as well.

“Trains need even more gentle slopes. So the length might be more than eight kilometres. Can Malaysia afford the cost of half this project, assuming the other half will be borne by Singapore? The project will cost billions and will take very many years to complete,” he wrote.

Dr Mahathir also said the Causeway should be demolished if the undersea tunnel is built as both Singapore and Malaysia will benefit from the removal of the 88-year-old highway.

“When completed, I hope the Causeway and the railway line will be removed. We will not need them anymore. Then water will flow east west and vice-versa. And small boats will be able to use the Tebrau Straits without having to go around south of Singapore,” he added.

Just last month, Johor UMNO called on the federal government to revive the ‘Crooked Bridge’ which Dr Mahathir has pushed hard for since the 1990s.

Dr Mahathir had also pressured Johor UMNO to revive the idea in February last year but Najib, who is keen to repair bilateral ties with the island republic, has been reluctant to discuss the proposal which was received frostily by Singapore’s government when first mooted.

The plan to tear down the Malaysian half of the Causeway and replace it with a curving bridge high enough for shipping traffic to pass beneath was ditched by Dr Mahathir’s successor, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Dr Mahathir, who still wields significant influence over UMNO despite stepping down in 2003 made his ire towards Abdullah very public and has continued to harangue Najib over the construction of the bridge.

But Prime Minister Najib had instead preferred to discuss other potential solutions such as a third bridge with Malaysia’s southern neighbour. He also successfully resolved the long-standing issue of Malayan Railway land in Singapore last year.

The Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) tasked with turning south Johor into a thriving economic hub, mooted the undersea tunnel as a third link between Malaysia and Singapore in November.

The Causeway, which is about 1.056km long, was completed in 1923 and links Johor Baru to Woodlands on the other side of the Straits of Johor. Between 80,000 and 100,000 vehicles use it daily.

The proposal to build a bridge to replace the 88-year-old Causeway was justified by Dr Mahathir as a means to ease traffic congestion between Johor Baru and Singapore and facilitate the free flow of water in the Tebrau Straits in addition to allowing ships heading to East Asia to bypass Singapore.

But the Najib administration continues to show no intention of reviving the crooked bridge project proposed by Dr Mahathir to replace the Causeway, according to Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz (right).

UMNO-linked Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) is also set to impose a toll on vehicles crossing the Causeway in both directions after completing its Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) that brings traffic from the border to the North-South Highway.

  1. Has a study ever been undertaken to evaluate the cost of reclaiming the entire Straits and thereby connecting the two countries?

Knowing Singapore, they have done theirs but I also sure that Khazanah would have done their own study. Khazanah under Azman Mokhtar is pretty thorough when it comes to such a major project.–Din Merican

  2. And then we have the ol’ long retired U.S. Marine looking to buy jelly (not for the inexperienced Kathy in DownUnder) but for the OWC or Old Wives Club in his neck of the woods in L.A. What’s happening?? Where are the SWT?

  3. Mongkut Bean living in New York but his mind is also back home. We shall wait for him to use his legal experience to analyse the case. I will make sure kerbau is there in case Karpal Singh needs a ride home after the verdict. Meanwhile, I was informed that Tok Cik still chasing after the lembus.

  4. “Knowing Singapore, they have done theirs but I also sure that Khazanah would have done their own study”.- ah yes, how much would go to the various vested parties for contracts, tolls, and reclamation. Would probably cost double if not triple than Singapore due to the “special” circumstances just like KLIA2.

  5. Semper, you know and i know that building a senget bridge and digging a lubang are actually not very different in terms of engineering work.

Hantu Kutti Octo has no idea that this is so.. To him a cantilever is something that is ‘hung’ while to korek means to shovel dirt. So the contractors must necessarily be different from his perspective. Whatever the beauty of the schemes, the Chinapek sub-Cons who are actually doing the job aren’t bothered. Hang also can, korek better still. While the powers-to-be figure this out, UDA will become Udang.

  6. Aiyo Tean ! Hang dok perah susu kerbau yang Tok Cik sebok minum susu lembu. Hang pi mana? Dah tak tolong Dato jaga lembu lagi ka?? Walau pun aku jauh, tapi Malaysia ni tempat tumpah darah. Jadi aku sedia menderma darah. Tang mana aku nak pi nak bagi darah? Wat Siam Aloq Setaq, jauh sangat. Aku minta Dato kirim ticket dia tak mau. Kedekut.

  7. Mongkut Bean
The barista not barrister must have spiked your daily cuppa of Joe. If OWC needs to go all the way to please their husband they need KY Intense.

  8. Often the mere appearance or utterance of someone can be nauseating, especially someone detested in the international community; self-aggrandizing, super-racist, with no consideration for human-rights & equality. Corrupt Malaysian leaderships cannot attract men of integrity; neither can they enact & foster laws to maintain high moral standards, transparency, performance & success in governments like leaders in of NZ & Singapore.

  9. Undersea tunnel seems a better choice to me. Hong Kong has 3 undersea tunnels linking its mainland and the island. Its more practical and do not disturb movements of ferries and ships.

Anyway the main issue to me its not whether its undersea tunnel or crooked bridge. Whatever the decision is the project must be undertaken in a transparent manner, beginning with awarding the contract. Its going to be huge money involved and naturally I’m seeing monsters already started doing their bidding, especially political monsters. Or could the government have already decided on the contractor?

  10. Our corruption standard operating procedures is one of the most transparent in the world. Don’t ever say we don’t have some world beaters, ok.

  11. Pok Li, they will pretend there will be few bidders, but they already have a Cronny whom they will pick, because they see $$$$$$ as there can be loading of whatever 10 or 20% in terms of Cost Escalation/s.

Once they get their up-front ” under-table” monies on each drawdown, they will not be the least interested about whether the project makes enough money to cover the Cost. As i understand, the Twin-tower KLCC cannot even generate enough Revenue till today to equal its costs.

But the interest is really the up=front as ” under-counter” monies is their chief Insentive…

The Proton move is one such move, in which Petronas money can be “lubricated” out through so-called “proper” Legal Documentations, but Incentive is hidden therein.

  12. Sshhhhssss!!!!!! Someone overheard the Queen of Hawaii has proposed a mega land mass project to fill up the entire sea separating Malaysia and Singapore and all projects about bridges straight or crooked above ground or underground are now irrelevant and outdated. Now both countries can construct as many roads, lanes, highways or whatever ways without any limitations. The project now is about demolishing not constructing and you see all are taken for a ride by someone using the Sun Tzu art of deception.

  13. Dato Din,

You may remember me. When you were at Sime Darby in Singapore in the late 1980s,I was with our High Commission. We knew each other when we were both at MU, Pantai Valley, Kuala Lumpur in the 1960’s. You played soccer and I represented MU in hockey and cricket.

I know how difficult Dr. M could be for us, having to explain his statements and actions to the Singapore MFA. I used to get irritated in private, but I had to put a public front. Basically, Dr. Mahathir does not understand diplomacy. He thought in terms of playing to the gallery at home, consequences be damned.

One of Ambassadors in the US fell foul with him for complaining to the late Sultan of Selangor when the Ambassador was load with fire water that Mahathir gave him a lot of problem by shooting from the hips. Our Ambassador called him a Mamak. This was reported to Dr.M by the Sultan, resulting in his recall.

Sometimes Dr. M makes sense. So I agree and disagree with him. I agree with him that the Tunnel does not make much sense. Also I agree that the Causeway should be demolished. But I do not agree with him that the alternative is the Crooked Bridge.

In the same article on his blog, Dr.M said the Crooked Bridge was going to have 8 lanes i.e. 4 on each side. Now that Crooked Bridge was supposed to connect the Causeway at the middle point in the Straits of Johor. The Causeway cannot be enlarged and it only has 2 lanes each way. So, it does not make any sense for an 8-lane bridge to join a 4-lane Causeway. In fact, it is one big joke. Furthermore, the crooked bridge is an old story. This former Prime Minister is incoherent on this issue.

Dr.M gets away telling lies to people who either believe everything he says or to people who do not know what the damn thing is all about. But in the age of Internet, that won’t work. For example your blog exposes what he really is. Dr. M is increasingly seen as someone who resorts to lies to make his points. Why can’t he learn to shut up! Happy New Year to you.

    Ex-Diplomat,

Of course, I remember you, but I must keep your identity a secret. Thanks for your views. As you know, I too was at Wisma Putra under King Ghaz. Tunku and Tun Razak at that time respected our diplomats and played according to cues given to them by Ghaz and his senior diplomats. Tun Hussein too knew how to listen to advice from professionals. Not this man, Dr. M. He has a huge ego and thinks we Malaysians are stupid. In fact, the reverse is true.–Din Merican

  14. Abnizar – a crony waiting in the wings is a given..part of SOP to allocate wealth UMNO style.

Ex-Diplomat – the only time a serial liar will shut up is when he turn into a stiff.

  15. I support mahathir on this issue, the tunnel is a stupid idea. However, perhaps get someone from overseas to design the alternative bridge, perhaps we could all visit the Golden Gate Bridge of Asia one day, as we celebrate racial unity and equality!
