The  Sage says: UMNO Party is unable to garner Malay support

By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal@http://www.themalaysianinsider.com

UMNO has not made any effective improvements since Election 2008 general and is unable to garner support from Malays, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed has said ahead of the party’s general assembly at the end of the month.

The party’s longest-serving President was quoted by its newspaper Utusan Malaysia today saying UMNO currently lacked good, credible leaders and that it was a pale shadow of its former glory.

“UMNO became badly damaged when Tun Abdullah Badawi took over. Because he prioritised his family and there were so many corruption allegations. And everyone knew about his son-in-law’s involvement,” he said, referring to UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

“This damaged UMNO has been inherited by Datuk Seri Najib Razak for him to fix. UMNO needs time before it can become stronger. But he (Najib) is busy and does not have enough time,” he added in an interview published in the Malay daily’s Sunday edition Mingguan Malaysia.

In one of his harshest’s remarks against his party, Dr Mahathir said the issue of credible leaders affected UMNO’s divisional level as well as the central leadership.

He said that some UMNO leaders were only interested in holding on to a particular post within the party, or wanted to contest in the next general election and did not care about strengthening the party.

“Each person is only looking after his own…what’s important should not be the individual but the party. If this goes on UMNO will lose, UMNO will not rule and all of us will not gain anything.”

The former prime minister remained sceptical about UMNO’s upcoming assembly, saying that he doubted party leaders would actually use it as a platform to resolve outstanding issues.

One of the other problems affecting UMNO, he said was its inability to respond to issues and accusations brought by the opposition.

“We won narrowly in the 2008 GE, that makes UMNO weak. When someone is weak is it easy for other people to attack. If we can respond it is fine but it becomes a problem when we cannot respond,” he said, explaining that for example if there were allegations of cronyism within the government, there should be a detailed explanation to alleviate any doubts on the matter.

He said that with a damaged UMNO, Malays were already losing power in the country. “I had said 10 years ago we will be losing power but we are now losing power. For almost anything we have to ask the Chinese to support or else we are finished. So in actuality we are the minority, anything we want to do, we will be asked, what will the Chinese get? If it is like this it will be difficult.”

UMNO goes into what is likely to be its last general assembly before a general election expected early next year.

Prime Minister Najib is said to need a marked improvement from the last polls to retain his position and only a return of its customary two-thirds majority of Parliament can guarantee he remains in office.

Barisan Nasional ceded 82 federal seats and five state governments in the landmark March 2008 election.

  1. “UMNO became badly damaged when Tun Abdullah Badawi took over. Because he prioritised his family and there were so many corruption allegations.” Mahathir.

It will be more accurate if “Tun Abdullah Badawi” is replaced with “Tun Mahathir Mohamad” in the above sentence.

UMNO reached its nadir when Mamak was PM. But this old goat will blame the whole world accept himself.

  2. If this goes on UMNO will lose, UMNO will not rule and all of us will not gain anything.” – mamak

true, thats really precise, all the umno putras and familie cannot loot and plunder to their hearts contend – and THAT IS GOOD SO!

  3. I just have come after seeing an interview of John Major by David Frost. If you have not seen please see it and see it again. It clealy shows what this man is made of. He speaks clearly and put his views without gaps in his memory.

  4. UMNO became badly damaged when Tun Abdullah Badawi took over… etc.” Tun M
Well.. former PM Abdullah …. this is a shit in your face frontal attack & fighting talk and basically is saying I’m a Fighting Cock and you are a castrated Bull.
… what are you and SILat going to do about it?
Do Malaysians a favour esp. the Malays and if going down take this Mad-hater with you who thinks he is a “bluer than indigo” Malay!

You @ least only plundered enough for 3 generations but he has enough for 9 generations and still not satisfied!…really..do Malaysia a service and even if necessary team up with Jibby or whoever and take him on!

    Hidup Malaysia!

  5. Who cares whatever else the old man is saying today. All we know is our Pak Semper is heading for Jakarta this Thanksgiving. And thoughts of pisang ambo gede jangan di makan comes to mind.

  6. Ha Ha Bean, I’m in Changi Airport waiting for my flight to Phnom Penh before going to Jakarta. My old friend is undergoing stem cell transplant. Must give him support.

  7. Didn’t know your pisang gede cannot be eaten. Cewek says the gede the better and tastier. Well have no intention of eating any pisang since we have so many pisang montel in LA. Sometimes we do get the pisang emas they call baby bananas and the common large plantain, somewhat similar to the pisang kapas.

With UMNo GA coming round the corner, there will be plenty of lawatan sambil belajar and other dubious trips. Hang out at the UMNO hotels and wear a songkok for free makan too.

This Che Det is so consumed with power that he thinks every Malay thinks like him Power, Power, Power. all the time. Get Fab with the new cleaning Power and clean UMNO out.

  8. It is not wise for the people to vote for a party to power for DECADES.
This will lead to tyranny, corruption, putting sleazy things under ISA.

Mahathir and families have amassed billions.
Maha refused to give oil Royalty to oposition PAS Kelantan (but to Terengganu and other States which are are BN) where 95% of the people are Malays.

Corruption is widespread among UMNO, MCA, MIC etc leaders.
MACC will not take action for million/billions squandered.
But MACC will takle action againt Teoh Beng Hock for ? RM2000 misappropriation.
Read the Auditor General Reports and you will laugh.

    You cannot trust politicians.
John Kennedy said, “Politicians are crooks and conmen.”

We must give the alternative a chance to rule.
We must provide check & balance.
    We must reduce corruption.
These are advantages to the PEOPLE.

But people can be bought. People are malleable.
    Elections are NOT Fair.
Winning elections is about money, media and campaign.

Malaysians must vote for CHANGE before the country collapses because of corruption, wastage, leakage.

Look at the RM350 Half Bridge rotting in the sun at Johor.
It is stupidity of the 1st Degree.

  9. With PAS in the electoral coalition, things will change soon as the Pakatan (led from behind) coaltion wins. There will be mayhem – either way. I have confidence in UMNO’s ability to cause mischief and the Malays inability to rise above the politics of race.

Absent a ground shaking event, it will be business as usual.

  10. A delayed Reaction ! On this so-called Inability of UM-NO to Garner Support of the Malay Voters. He is being Cynical :

What he means is : ” Get out of the Way quickly, the top Two, My legacy in the form of my Son….HAS to take-over….” – Conjecture : Otherwise its going to be too little too late….

  11. Abnizar, the day his son takes the top spot will finally confirmed his dynastic tendencies for all to see.

He just want enough time for people to forget his dismal record as a PM. Installing his son will buy him that time.
