Your Weekend Entertainment

After some discussion, Dr. Kamsiah and I agreed that for this weekend we should feature lady vocalists from Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. We start with Emilia Contessa and we are sure that both Bean and Semper remember her with that powerful voice singing her hit song.

Emilia is followed by Ernie Djohan, and then we bring on board Hetty Koes Endang, one of Indonesia’s outstanding kerongcong singers. Katrina Dahari from Singapore gives us three songs that happen to be Din’s favorite numbers. Her singing style is very soothing to the sentimentalists on the blog, Din being one of them.

Datin Rafeah Buang who grew up in Singapore before she married into Pahang Royalty and settled in Malaysia was extremely popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Then comes Sharifah Ani who captured the Malaysian Malay world with her unique and powerful voice. And who will forget Biduan Negara Saloma with her sultry voice and her partnership with the irreplaceable P. Ramlee. She sings two popular songs of the 1960s.

Finally, we have pleasure in featuring the current Malaysia’s Lady of Song, Siti Nurhaliza who is not only a great entertainer but also a very successful business personality.  We hope our selections will take you all on a pleasurable excursion of songs. Southeast Asia is indeed a very special region with its share of great talent.–Dr. Kamsiah and Din Merican

Let us Al-Fatihah in honour of my good golfing friend, Datuk Kadar. He is a great human being and very good golfer.I remember talking him often at the Royal Selangor Golf Club, especially his collection of golf clubs in the 1980s. He and I played golf once with the late Broery Marantika. –Din Merican
