The Laments of a Malaysian–All that Hypocrisy

March 6, 2017

I received this article (below) from my intellectual buddy, Dr. Lim Teck Ghee. It is a piece written by another friend and fellow blogger, Hussein Hamid ,who resides in Melbourne, Australia. I admire Hussein for his frankness.

Teck Ghee was, however “not sure if you can post it”. Well, why not, my friend. The time for being politically correct is over for me. The hypocrisy and pretense make me sick. So instead of spending time monitoring the antics of Donald J. Trump today, I decided to carry this article to show that there is an ugly side of Malaysia, which no our mainstream media will carry.

We are all know what is happening in the shaddy corners and dark recesses of Kuala Lumpur and other cities in our country.  It is time to own up to this ugly moral degeneration of our society.–Din Merican

The Laments of a Malaysian–All that Hypocrisy

by Hussein Hamid

For most of my adult life I have lived abroad longer than I have lived in Malaysia. This is not something to be proud of nor it is something I want to crow to the world – I am just stating a fact. It is so because in my life so far, I come and go as I please. There has never been anything significant in any country that has made me want to settle down for anything longer than four or five years..…until now! Melbourne is now home because all that I want in life is here. And all that I want in life is to live a life of my own choosing. Melbourne is a city that allows me to do as I please because I know nobody here and yet it is the most exciting and alive city that I have ever lived in – London, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur included.  Imagine how liberating it is to walk around Melbourne and not know anyone else but the family you love. ……but I digress.

I started this article wanting to have my say about the hypocrisy of Malaysians who shun Western culture because it corrupts Malaysians – especially the young.

Having lived abroad for so long, I know what western culture entails and being Malaysian, I know what Malaysian culture or more exactly, what Islamic culture in Malaysia is like. Let me cut to the chase.

There are more prostitution and massage parlors in Kuala Lumpur than in the whole of Sydney, Melbourne and London put together. There are more extra marital affairs, mistresses kept by sugar daddies, businessmen, politicians and men in high public office in Malaysia than in Sydney, Melbourne and London put together too.

Chaste Malay girls? Yes there are plenty of them around in Malaysia but so are there many unchaste Malay girls running around Kuala Lumpur and the other urban areas. All of them looking for a good time, money and rich husbands – ready to become second, third or fourth trophy wives or mistresses and girlfriends of rich Malays or be kept by expatriates and rich businessmen of any nationality – more than Chinese or Indian girls. It grieves me so to see Malays divorce their first wives of many many years with children in tow to marry young trophy wives who will trade their youth and looks for money – lots of money.

Like the proverbial Dato’s – throw a stone and more often than not you will strike a Malay girl whose idea of a good time is having high tea at a Five Star Hotel coffee house and then adjourning with her paramour for the evening to an upstairs room and there continue with her tête-à-tête with a Dato’, a Tan Sri or just anybody with enough money to make it worth her while to do as she is told. A few hours on her back will buy her all that her heart desires!

No. I am not saying that Malay girls are loose and lack morals but it would do good if the religious authorities busy themselves with these kind of sexual activities between consenting unmarried Malays (I say consenting because when you have good money to throw after bad girls the girls will invariable consent to any activity that is requested of them). Sultans do it, Ministers do it, KSUs (Secretary-Generals) do it, Generals with any number of Stars do it – even Police Inspectors do it!

All these are going on in a nation where the religious authorities seize corpses of presumed Muslims converts from grieving non-Muslim families to give these people Muslim burials? Well, they are nothing more than grave robbers.

All this in a nation where a Muslim girl can be caned for drinking liquor but a Malay Minister is appointed envoy to Washington for his raba raba activities.

A nation that thinks it is heroic for religious authorities to raid clubs, hotels and private homes to catch consenting adults committing khalwat? And in doing so they have caused the death of people, stripped officials of their positions and even mistakenly arrested happily married couples.

Who cares if footballers are caught fornicating with actresses? What I care for is when the head of Islam in a state – the Sultan – is caught fornicating with an actress. The Sultan should lead by example. If you want to do moral policing do it first on our leaders for they, of all people, should desist from any of these “evils” that these religious hypocrites are hell-bent on preventing from happening.

Malay leaders are the worst offenders of morality. Who can forget Rahim Thambi Chik who raped an underage Malay School girl. Shahidan Kassim who made Malay girls pregnant while he was MB and also fathered a child out-of-wedlock with a Thai lady? Our intrepid ex-Chief Justice who dared to marry another one in Thailand without asking permission from his first wife and then double dared the Judiciary by tearing the marriage certificate in the mistaken belief that he could hoodwink the same judiciary that he was later to head. The randy Razak Baginda and Altantuya?

The Sultan and his model “whatever you want to call her” girlfriend? And the Father of that Sultan who married a girl many years younger – but all done legally of course. And the many stories of Ministers and their kept girlfriends and mistresses? I can go on….but all the morality being bandied about by the religious hypocrites with the tacit agreement of UMNO leaders is just hypocrisy at its worst.

How can Beyonce and any other female entertainers from the western world morally corrupt the Sultan and the other fornicators any more than they are already corrupt morally? How will any skimpy dressed female singer from the western world hold a candle against the dangdut singers and the ‘action’ in the dangduts bars that Muslims hang out at every night of the week?

How can going to a concert make the prostitution and the massage parlors along Bukit Bintang any worse than what they are now? Will banning any of these concerts stop corruption and cronyism already rampant in this nation of ours? Or do these fornicators want the people of Malaysia to be shielded from these evil…but aisehman, do let them carry on with their fornicating.

It is all just show. It is all just a sham to show whoever who is bothered to look that UMNO is a champion of Islamic values even as UMNO leaders are themselves mired in corruption, arrogance, cronyism and rampant sexual hijinks that would put even Lady’s Chatterley lover and Casanova to shame!

Go check the five star hotels with their half day rate room’s rentals – see who are using them? Go check the private mess dotted all over KL! Go see what Malay actresses and Malay actors are up to! Go see what some religious enforcers are doing with the Malay girls that they have caught in Massage parlors, dangduts bars for khalwat! Do this and you will see the hypocrisy of it all.

I tell you that Islam is not preventing any of the maksiat that is being committed by Muslims in Malaysia. Islam protects them because the lowly religious officials will not go after the big fish. They will  raid a hotel in Jalan Raja Laut but God forbid if they can even think about entering a five start hotel room where they know a Muslim VIP is fornicating with his mistress.

We do not have that hypocrisy in the western society that I have lived in for most of my adult life. Here consenting adults are free to do what they like in the privacy of their own rooms. Here brothels and massage parlors are licensed. Yes you are shamed if you claim to be a good family man and are caught having an affair behind your wife’s back – because you lied and you can be punished in a civil court if your wife wants a divorce. And if you have sex with an underage person the full fury of the judicial system will be unleashed upon you.

Society polices itself on morality and no religious authority – not even Islamic ones – dares to break into a room where consenting adults are doing what comes naturally for all of us – fornicating.

When will it change in Malaysia? When will we be rid of these religious authorities who tell us what we can and cannot do in the name of Islam? Not for as long as we have leaders who offend moral and legal edicts with impunity because they can. Time will put all these right because everyday more and more of our people are realizing that the power to change what they do not like rests within themselves. Yes they can ban Beyonce from performing in Malaysia but they can only do so now with accompanying protests from many of us who are people of Malaysia – Muslims and non-Muslims. And every time they do so it is another nail into their coffins…and we have enough nails in reserve to put more nails into their coffins every time they give us a reason to do so.

Until then, hypocrisy will still win the day. Until then UMNO will still rule and the religious authorities will still catch you if you eat in public during Ramadan. They will catch Muslims caught in close proximity with those to whom they are not wed.

They will continue to seize corpses of converts from grieving relatives to do (so they claim) God’s work and give these dead Muslims salvation with an Islamic burial. But in truth it is these religious enforcers who need salvation. They live in a world isolated from reality because our leaders wants to use them to give them credibility as Champions of Islams….and as long as these leaders exist so will these religious morality enforcers who are in reality nothing more than paid coolies of these politicians. I rest my case.

  1. Whew, what a write up, even Sultans are not spared. Yes I’ve heard of the Sultan who had to introduce his young wife lest she be mistaken as his granddaughter. No wonder there are more 5-star hotels going up in Malaysia. I thought they were catering to the well heeled tourists.

Bukit Bintang area is now more famous than Patpong in Bangkok. Walk a few steps along Bukit Bintang and you will accosted by pimps even when you are accompanied by your wife. All this right under the noses of the Police in the Pondok Polis. Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan P. Ramlee is another story. I always have a hard time deciding whether to shake hands with a Malay girl or not trying not to embarrass myself.

The tabloids are full of stories of singers and starlets and their personal lives. Hussein is right, many have chosen the path of trophy wife. Guess what, that comes with progress they say.

The Moral Police need to be policed too. Far too many stories involving their abuse of power especially in cases of close proximity. Even 1 lady in a room with 3 men have fallen victim.
For the VIPs everyday is Valentines Day.

    Orang Malaya,

Thanks for your comments. Obviously you are more observant than me when it comes to such matters. I wonder what characters like Hadi and Harussani and their ilk do behind closed doors when only God is watching. You can be sure when given a young and beautiful chick, they won’t be zikiring. I could be wrong since they claim to have strong iman.–Din Merican

    • Many survey says men think about sex every 15 seconds. For the 2 men of the cloth they probably think of how women look like under the Hijabs. I remember in Makkah group of Arabs men watching and commenting about the heels of women they see walking by, since the women wore Niqab and Purdah.

  2. Bravo, the perfect example of calling a spade a spade. Most urbanites know this already but it’s the villagers who are kept in the dark and thus continue to support their loyal masters.

  3. So perhaps PAS, or rather Hadi, is right?

People, Muslims in particular, (as all infidels are destined for Hell anyway no matter how moral / good they are in this life), need the god-fearing Sharia laws to wipe out all this depraved behavior, especially among the Malay-Muslim political / business elite?

  4. I’ve known for some years, more and more Malays are joining the non-Malays leaving the country. About five years back, I interviewed a young female Malay chemist who told me why she wanted to leave Malaysia. She came to the Bay Area with a tourist visa and walked into my lab looking for a job.

She told me she was woken up one night by her flatmate in a middle class suburb in Kuala Lumpur early that year. Six men from the Selangor State Islamic Department (Jais) had entered her apartment in a “morality” raid. An anonymous phone call to the religious department alleging a man was seen entering her flat was all it took for the religious officials to descend on her home. The men were not accompanied by any woman. They searched all their bedrooms, closets and even looked under the bed as they thought a man could be hiding there. The incident left her angry and helpless and helped compel her to make plans to leave Malaysia.

As the majority in the country who enjoys special privileges in education and employment under decades-old affirmative action programs, it makes her aspiration to migrate more compelling and highlights the growing extremism creeping into modern and moderate Malaysia. “I don’t feel safe in Malaysia anymore,” she told me. “It’s like you are guilty until proven innocent. Anyone can make a phone call to accuse another person out of malice or vengeance and, without proof or investigation, the religious authorities will come to your place.”

Without checking further into her credentials, I asked my secretary to bring me the application for H1-B visa to sponsor her for work permit from the Immigration Department. I hired her right away with one condition, that she would go to night classes to improve her English. She kept her promise. And she turned out to be a fine chemist. No, she never came in to work wearing the tudung. She does not have to.

Today, she is happily married to a fellow Chinese-Malaysian who works as an electronic engineer in the Silicon Valley, converted into Christianity, and they have a lovely little son. Every time she came visit me she never forgot to bring me my favorite lamb rendang. She is not only a fine chemist, she is a marvelous cook.

    • Interesting story. Thanks for sharing.

I wonder how many victimised women there are in 1Malaysia i.e. the ones where the husband legally takes a second wife, and the first wife and her kids are basically left to fend for themselves.

    • LaMoy, watch out for visit by the Malaysian Moral Police or Jakim to your lab. They will come after you for abetting in getting the Malay girl converted. He he

    • Semper:
Don’t scare me, my silly old friend. I’m completely innocent. You know how we feel when we met a fellow Malaysian in the United States, disregards of ethnic origin. She needed a job and I was in the position to give her a job, and she proved that she deserved it. About her conversion, I’ve absolutely nothing to do with it. I’m an atheist. She simply decided to follow her husband’s religion.

  5. Well done Hussein and Din. Malaysians, led by our leaders, are champions at denial, double dealing, two faced, duplicitous conduct. Eventually the truth shall set us free and you two are helping lead the way.

  6. All this makes me think that there must be more than one Hell.

If you are not a Muslim, you go to an Islamic Hell, not a Christian, you go to a Christian Hell, and so on for all other religions that have Hells.

On the flip side, there must also be more than one Heaven. If not, I can imagine the mutual disappointment when a Muslim and a Christian, (and perhaps even an exemplary Atheist), happen to meet in the same Heaven, and god forbid complain to Almighty God that only he, (be it the Muslim or Christian), deserves to be there.

As for the exemplary atheist, it is a surprise bonus.

  7. The article is high-octane stuff that will ruffle all the feathers of a morally sinful Islamic Malay leaders and big-shots whose number can be staggering.

Whist Dr. Lim Teck Ghee was unsure of the article seeing the day light of print, Dato has come to his rescue with his characteristic daring-do.

Since the Sultans sit at apex of hierarchy (so to speak) reforms should begin starting with them.Som e of the Sultans, unlike the erudite Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak, are plain ‘limbeh’ and makan gaji buta type. They have nothing substantial to contribute to the betterment of the people or good governance. How do you correct the slack? Their vested interests are in big-time businesses and they rake in millions directly and indirectly through collaboration with ruling cliques. As a first step they should be made to divest their interests in businesses. As compensation their privy purse could be doubled, if necessary, by the government. Secondly they should be made to prove their worth and public acceptance through a referendum every ten years of their reign. They should secure at least 75% of their subjects’ votes failing which they should step down for the Crown Prince(s) to take over. They can be given a five year grace period before kick-starting the reform measures.

  8. The writer forgets to mention one politician, a sexual pervert convicted by the court, Anwar. Maybe because he’s having such a good time at Mardi Gras in Australia. G’day mate.

    • Consider Saiful speaking to a very senior police officer and then to Najib before he filed the police report. Pakatan was at its strongest then and Anwar as its leader, was viewed as democratically undefeatable and as a real danger to Najib and his BN rule. He ought to be crushed at any costs and the case build-up was fabricated stealthily brick by brick. That he will be convicted was a forgone conclusion for swaths of neutral people and many of those who were politically conscious and legally trained. There were volleys of gaps, holes and untruths and all the benefit of doubts were given to the prosecution and not the defence. Even more shocking was the decision of the 5-panel (?) judges to find him guilty was unanimous – not a single judge demurred.

manjoi my friend, please take no offence. Suppose your father is the opposition leader and looks set to topple the ruling regime and become the next PM and is in similar situation as trapped Anwar, will your views be any different? Touch your heart and say.

  9. While I may not read all of the Quran nor much of the Hadith, what I have gathered is simply this – ISLAMIC JURISPRUDENCE AND SYSTEM DOES NOT HAVE THE COMPREHENSIVE ANSWER TO PUBLIC MORALITY THAT THE STRONGEST ADVOCATE CLAIMS. The problem is that if you examined it technically, structurally, mathematically, it simply does not have the answer.. It is too generalized in principles while the codified form, its too simplistic and severe.

The codes of the Syariah laws, it comes from too general ideas. Not only is it too unscientific about the reasons for why people do what it does, it makes too large a leap to the answer the complexity of public morality in the modern age. Truth is poeple do crimes and break personal conducts for a multitudes of reason on a multitudes of path. Just as free market economy cannot be solution for everyone and every good even if its still the best solution known to us until now, it simply has significant people it cannot serve. Its the same with most jurisprudence and system or enforcement, there is NO ONE SIZE fit all, even just majority is difficult which Western Jurisprudence does serve.

Islamic jurisprudence and enforcement may rival in serving the majority of most people and most cases – BUT IT CAN EXTRACT TOO HIGH AND TOO MANY A PRICE FOR THOSE IT FAILS. For a very significant minority, likely more the Western Jurisprudence, it just BOTH TOO HIGH AND TOO MANY..

  10. Dear Hussein Hamid , please do visit the Islamic University of Melbourne – set up by a female ‘ mat salleh ‘ who had a twenty year legal battle to obtain the Licence , and now operational full steam, Such grit and faith because she had come into the fold of the Islamic faith, fully convinced of the noble purpose in the Islamic cause. Conversely, students who are non-Christians, having been exposed to both field of knowledge, have made both Faith of equal reverence ……

You would really feel proud of her grit & determination , and tremendous fellowship on both sides of the divide…..
The muslim people are indeed proud of her effort & achievement !

    • Its thinking like these that proves 1.5billion Muslims are wrong about their religion. It betrays INHERENT OVER ENTITLEMENT. It SHOWS INHERENT PREJUDICE. It also proves POOR LOGIC because Islamic University of Melbourne proves the Islamic mentality are the ones who are wrong about others.

  11. Steven, studies have proven it’s the urban Malays who are more prone to “melatah” about Islam and Umno. They are easily swayed by sweet talks and “sweets”. The rural Malays will listen to reasoning and will not succumb to threats and arm-twisting tactics employed by Umno and Pas. This was told to me by none other than PKR stalwart, Rafizi Ramli and lately by Siti Kassim, the outspoken Syariah lawyer.

  12. Quote:- “The muslim people are indeed proud of her effort & achievement !”

Actually in her case it is the people of Melbourne who are the truly proud ones.

The Muslim people can truly be proud only if she fought successfully to have a Christian University in Riyadh.

  13. Katasayang,

Quote:- “Non atheist can go to Atheist heaven :p”

You are all welcome to our Atheist Heaven because it is “visa free”, well, on one condition — that any virgins, (males or females), found there are strictly off-limits. Anyone found breaking this rule will be sent to our Atheist Hell.

  14. To hell with all hells!

A pastor and his church member, a taxi-driver, both with minimum sins possible, died the same day and found themselves dispatched to heaven. At the gate of heaven, God received them and put a cotton shawl over the shoulder of the pastor and a golden shawl on the taxi-driver. Miffed at the slight, the pastor asked why cotton for him and gold for the taxi-driver. God replied: “When you said the sermons the congregation slept and when he drove his taxi the passengers prayed”
