Sorry, President Trump. I agree with you.

The challenge for the media must be to ensure that we don’t mirror Trump’s attitude of hostility. We cannot absorb and reflect that negativity. We are not the opposition. We are a civic institution, explicitly protected by the Constitution, that is meant to hold government accountable and provide real information to the citizenry. I hope to be able to do that. Along the way, when I have to, I will disagree vigorously with Donald Trump. But just as important, when warranted, whether he likes it or not, I will agree with him.–Fareed Zakaria

After his spat with Mexico, after the travel ban, this week President Trump did something that surprised me. He put in place a policy with which I agreed. He placed a smart check on ever-proliferating federal regulations. His executive action requires any department that wants to add a regulation to get rid of two existing ones. It might seem gimmicky, but the British government instituted just this “one-in, two-out” rule in 2013 and it has worked well. In fact, while I find much of Trump’s worldview alarming, I generally agree with some important parts of his program — tax reform, infrastructure investment, deregulation, civil service reform. But the larger question I keep asking myself is: Does Trump want someone like me to agree with him?

The Trump White House has decided that the best way to deal with any institution or group that might stand in its way is to relentlessly try to delegitimize it. This has led to a ferocious strategy of attack on the media, which the president now says is “the opposition party.” His chief strategist, Stephen K. Bannon, urges the media to “keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while.” Sean Hannity, the Fox News host who has become an unofficial spokesman for the White House, describes the media as “a bunch of overpaid, out of touch, lazy millionaires that have nothing but contempt for the people who do make this country great.”

At this point, one could note that, if we are to listen to America, almost 3 million more Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than for Trump (who received a share of the popular vote that was lower than Mitt Romney’s, in fact lower than the share received by most of the losers of recent presidential elections). And as for which of these groups makes America great, I’m not sure what criteria to use, but if it is generating wealth and contributing to gross domestic product, it’s not even close. According to the Brookings Institution, the 500 counties won by Clinton produced 64 percent of U.S. economic output, while the 2,600 counties won by Trump produced just 36 percent of GDP. Use any economic measure — employment, start-ups, innovation — and the areas that score highest voted heavily against Trump.

The Soft and Beautiful Side of President Donald J. Trump– First Lady Melania Trump

The much-maligned urban elites may be out of touch with the rest of the country, but they still pay its bills. A few years ago, the Economist compared how much each American state contributed to the federal coffers against the funds they received from Washington. The basic pattern is simple: It is blue states, which voted against Trump in 2016, that fund the red states that voted for him. From 1990 to 2009, Clinton states collectively paid $2.4 trillion more in federal taxes than they received in federal spending, while Trump states altogether received $1.3 trillion more than they paid.

Most presidents begin their tenure by trying to reach out to their political opponents, signaling that they want to represent those who didn’t vote for them as well as those who did, and generally trying to bring the country together. Trump has made almost no such effort, simply asserting that the country was divided before he was elected and thus absolving himself of any responsibility for unifying it. In office, he has mercilessly attacked anyone who dares to disagree with him, whether senators, prime ministers or student protesters. It might be a good way to play to his base, but it’s a terrible way to lead the country.

  1. Donald Trump thinks that he is still a tv reality star. When talking or answering questions to reporters,he is still blushing with that stupid smile and wink of a moron.Talking about ratings of Arnold hosting the Apprentice in what was supposed to be a prayer session. This fool knows no limits.

Donald Trump is now the POTUS,so grow up and act like one.Trying to strong arm heads of other countries, causing conflicts and enmity with the press is not the way to go.You do not run a country like running a private or family business. What he did or do in his family business.Cheating final payments to contractors because he has an army of lawyers on his payroll to defend him?Grope, kiss or rape secretaries and contestants, working in his organisation or on his tv reality show, because he had an army of lawyers on his payroll to defend him? Cheat thousands of students out of tens of millions,in his phony Trump University, because he has an army of lawyers to defend him?You can say ten bad things and no good things about this egolistic sex maniac, because that is what he is.

The American voters think that because he is a billionaire,he can do and make wonders for them? This guy only thinks about himself, only loves himself and the money he can screw out the backsides of the people who sweat working on his projects, hotels, golf courses and clubs.

Just think about it.Donald Trump thinks that he can assault and rape his first wife, because she is divorcing him for cheating on her?And this raper and statutory raper is the POTUS?God bless the US of A.

No. Trump does not give a damn if you agree with him or otherwise but one can imagine that what he will expect from you is a little less grand like impartiality and honesty in your reporting. But that will be hard to expect from a proven plagiarising cheat like you.

“…A few years ago, the Economist compared how much each American state contributed to the federal coffers against the funds they received from Washington. Well, your statistics mean squat and you may file them up you know where, when in reality most of the US states, including the ones you glorified, are bankrupt.

Holy crap! The main stream media and its paid whores like you have been relentlessly trying to throw the man under the bus from the get-go.!

  3. Keeping in mind that Trump shows all the signs of NPD (narcissistic personality disorder) will make it easier to understand his actions.
Paul Krugman calls some of these “unhinged”.

  4. Sorry Fareed. Now all who are determined to go to the U.S. can go to the U.S. thanks to the MSM. Millions from all over the world are determined to to go to the U.S. from the Third World for a better life. Just give a thought to what the U.S. will look like a decade from now when the population hits a billion without a corresponding increase in GDP.

  5. Defending World Freedom

Has Donald Trump opened a can of worms with his anti-terrorist stance? You can bet on it. He is doing what he said he will do, to put policies in place to contain this problem at the start. Now these creepy crawlies are all over, rebellious spirits exposed in riots and protest.
He may be prone to error in judgement as anybody else, but decisions are made based on Secret Service reports of which we have no privy to. Who is to say he is wrong and they are right?

Neither is it necessary he must get right with the rest of the world. In other words, there is no President so good that the world will readily lay out a red carpet for him. The mainstream media, the downtown Establishment, seek to discredit him, and put their wedges into any fissure to divide the people over religious and racial lines and confuse the issue.

Besieged from all sides with very few friends, even so called Allies and heads of States whine and wail Peace, Peace where there is none, not in America, not in Europe, not in China, but only liars. Thus Muslims worldwide in sympathy with their blood ties and common DNA strands, become self-engulfed in a fog of confusion.

Needless to say, the Muslim Establishment such as OIC who control the masses, and also, not to mention the enemies of America, fearing his increasing popularity might lead to their own demise, will undermine whatever noble attempts he makes to restore greatness to the nation.

Freedom of Religion is enshrined in its Constitution, together with the other sacred freedoms of Speech, Media and Assembly. In the cause of bringing Freedom to the four corners of earth, America need strong borders and an ironclad security, in order to inflict woes upon States where basic freedoms are denied to its people.

In as much as the ISIS and Militant Islam phenomena is a scorch on the planet, it is the new Nazism that will not hesitate to join with the dominant world force, China. To them America without Donald as President, is nothing and just like Kennedy, he can be assassinated. If he can’t take the bull by the horns, at least he can catch it by the balls.

The eye of the eagle is on those countries specified in the ban, compelling them to come up higher and make the grade among the family of nations. Better to nip the problem in the bud, with a minimum loss of life, than to perform a surgical operation to dislodge dangerous elements within the inner cities of America.
How can national security be share with people who have only known tyranny, feudalism and corrupt governments? A system must be in place, not to side-line Muslims, but to Integrated new immigrants into the American way of life without religious discrimination as guaranteed by law.
The time tables are set, the days get shorter. In a calculated move to shift a pawn on the Master Chessboard, the stakes are high indeed, in comparison to his casino den days. However these are minor adjustments, for his best shots are yet to come.
Let the lion Donald have his share of the carnage. It bothers him not how loudly the jackals bray. They wish to join the bandwagon and reap the rewards, but prove unworthy who do not want to fight.

It is impossible to put the lid back. The swamp has to be drained of worms, and its first casualty will be the Supreme Court. America will fulfil its fiery destiny this time around … what about you, friend?

In the name of the mother of Liberty,
In the name of the mother of Exiles,

  6. Media are supposed to provide accurate and truthful information.

This, many had failed. Instead, promoting agendas of themselves or their countries’ targeted benefits largely at other’s expense- eg WMD on Iraq War, Zika on Rio Olympic, Malala for Nobel prize….,…..

  7. Voice of Malaysia.
Well put. You took the words out my mouth! 😆

“The mainstream media, the downtown Establishment, seek to discredit him, and put their wedges into any fissure to divide the people over religious and racial lines and confuse the issue.”
Whilst The Black Lives Matter, LGBTA and the Anti Xenophobia activists do have legitimate concerns, their rallies have been hijacked to cause discord and destabilisation.

In making America great again,Trump’s methods may be inept and crude but he will provide the prescription – an enema to facilitate the catharsis America badly needs to rid itself of decades of over indulgence.

  8. “We are not the opposition. We are a civic institution, explicitly protected by the Constitution, that is meant to hold government accountable and provide real information to the citizenry,” Zakaria.

The media especially CNN, with its 6% trustworthiness of Americans, want to hold government accountable? You treat yourself too highly. What media likes CNN can do is to make use of US reputation as an advanced nation and make a fool out of the third world nations which tend to think the loudest in US is the voice of Americans. This reminds me a Pakcik, probably knowing about US “allowing” Playboy magazine in circulation, who told me that “Orang Amerika tu sangat lucah (promiscuous)”, not knowing any publishers who can attract a mere 1% are millionaire made out of the readership. This Playboy magazine and CNN are just the side effect of a free country. CNN with small % viewership is certainly a viable multi-billions business. The third world people are made a fool by those US media like CNN which manages to get third world flashy airports to broadcast expert-looking dummies’s commentary.

  9. Voice of Malaysia are you on crack ?

Decisions made on Secret Service reports ? Do you know what the Secret Service does ?

And yes, we can tell if what he does is right or wrong. What is with Trump lackeys and objective assessment. This is not the only Trump fan who has said this.

“Along the way, when I have to, I will disagree vigorously with Donald Trump. But just as important, when warranted, whether he likes it or not, I will agree with him.–Fareed Zakaria”

    No you moron.

Just because you agree with him does not make what he does right or just because you disagree with him does not make what he does wrong.

What is going on with the world ?

  10. Donald Trump and his supporters want people to believe the rallies against him have been “hijacked” to cause discord and destabilization. Those who believe in the Trumpites are either naively ignorant or pure stupid. Hijacked by whom and by what? There may be some sore-loser Clintonites among the rallies but there are so many different organizations and, I admit, each with its own dissatisfactions and reasons. It is Trump and his cohorts that cause discord and destabilization in the first place. And I and my Chinese-Americans organization did not receive a single penny from George Soros as the Trump cliques accused him of financing the rallies.

I and my organization protest because Donald Trump’s presidency, and what it portends for America and the democratic world, demands such action. A commander-in-chief who revels in grabbing women “by the pussy,” myriad insults to women, cozies up to a Russian dictator who hacked the U.S. election, spews contempt for our allies including Angela Merkel, wants to build a wall to keep out Mexicans, or target people because they are of the Muslim faith, merits a strong collective response.

We are not so naive or stupid not to understand history that the people cannot attain sovereignty over their governments by collective protest in the streets unless violent revolution. The extent of these protests is, perhaps, to set a check on a Trump Administration, hopefully to enlighten him and his cohorts that there are people who are very dissatisfied — that this election is not a blank check to do whatever they want. More important is to unify the opposing forces to oust Trump in the next election. This is democracy.

  11. And by the day Fareed, where were all these people who fall in the 90 days restrictions in enters into the U.S. when His Excellency President of Syria was killing his own citizens and forcing those who were not killed out of the country.
