The event, to be held Thursday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, honors people and groups that have fought extremism. Ms. Rosmah is known for her lavish spending on luxury items like Hermès Birkin bags.

The couple’s family and close friends are at the center of a Justice Department lawsuit claiming that $1 billion in assets — including a $30.6 million penthouse at the Time Warner Center in New York and a $39 million mansion in the Los Angeles hills — were bought with money stolen from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, called 1Malaysia Development Berhad, or 1MDB.

A statement on Sunday from Tudor Parfitt, a scholar involved in the event, confirmed that the honor had been withdrawn.

The statement said that questions had been raised about the sources of Permata’s funding, and that although the event organizers were not aware of any specific wrongdoing, they did not have time to vet the organization.

The event is co-hosted by the head of UNESCO, Irina Bokova. Ms. Bokova is running to be secretary general of the United Nations, so her actions are also being closely scrutinized.

  1. ‘Congrats UNESCO and Irina Bokova for being sensitive and smart’

Did UNESCO and IRINA BOKOVA not do any research BEFORE MAKING THE AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT?

Though questions had been raised about the sources of Permata’s funding and that although the event organizers were not aware of any specific wrongdoing to say that ‘they did not have time to vet the organization’ may give the perception that the award decision may have been more of a decision made on reasons other than what is stated and then WITHDRAWAL AFTER QUESTIONS RAISED.

  2. The criteria was wrong from the beginning. No government funded program should be eligible. That alone would have disqualified Permata. The folks at UNESCO should also be aware of current development in the countries that they are proposing. Now they get egg on their faces.

  3. That hussy may now go into a hissy fit and go on another shopping binge. But where? Every reporter of repute will be watching her like a hawk. Not to mention the DOJ operatives and the terrible-twos arch nemesis the Sarawak Report.

Bet their living room in Putrid Jaya is as stinking and hot as hell as they trade barbs – one for being a greedy hog and the other for prioritising sex over statesmanship.

  4. Which is why some awards, or the erection of a national monument to a national hero are given or erected after the death of the recipient or the national hero so that there is less chance of the recipient or hero turning “bad” before he or she dies and embarrass everybody.
