Anwar-Mahathir joint statement against NSC

 by FMT Reporters

Opposition leader stresses the present, not past, is his main concern following daughter’s push for apology from Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Anwar-Mahathir

Jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and his former mentor-turned-nemesis Dr Mahathir Mohamad have issued a joint statement against the National Security Council (NSC) Act.

The statement, which was confirmed by Anwar himself, voices concern that the NSC is a threat to democracy in the country. “We notice that almost all institutions in the country, such as the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Attorney-General and Bank Negara are fully under Prime Minister Najib Razak’s control.”

The two former UMNO leaders said that the NSC denies the right of slain officers or civilians to a post-mortem to determine their cause of death, adding this will lead to higher chances of wrongdoing.

“This act has cast aside the role and powers of the Yang DiPertuan Agong and the Council of Malay Rulers in the realm of public safety and freedom.”

Thus, Anwar and Mahathir said they were united with the people to fight the NSC, and to bring change and reform to protect the rights and freedoms of Malaysians and to bring progress to Malaysia once more.

Anwar told reporters when met at the High Court here today (September 19) that the joint statement is a good initiative. He also responded to questions regarding his daughter, Nurul Nuha Anwar, asking Mahathir to apologise for the latter’s transgressions against him in the past.

“The problem is that all of this happened so sudden. I had no opportunity to speak to my children.I  have explained it to my children. It is enough. We have suffered immensely.”

Last week, Nurul Nuha had urged Mahathir to own up for his accusations and other actions that led to her father’s arrest and conviction for sodomy and corruption in 1998.

Anwar said his concern now was the present, and that he was appreciative of Mahathir’s support against the NSC, adding that “reformasi” is still important. When asked whether he had forgiven Mahathir, Anwar responded by saying that he had forgiven a lot of people.

On September 5, Mahathir turned up at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to show his support for Anwar’s suit against the government over the NSC. It was the first time in 18 years that the two adversaries had met.

  1. A year ago if someone had said this was coming, I would have laughed.

I suppose it proves one more time the adage that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I wish someone can tell me now what happens when Najib is deposed, one way or another.

    The following will probably happen.

    —- Anwar will get a royal pardon and gets active in politics again; this has to be the arrangement for Anwar to agree to this;

    —- If by some miracle Anwar becomes PM, he will have to promote Mukhriz; this has to be the arrangement for Mahathir to agree to this;

    Please don’t laugh.

Najib in jail? No. He or Rosmah is too smart not to negotiate an escape route or more likely exile themselves somewhere where billions can buy almost anything. I can think of a few places.

As for the AG, top MACC fellows, IGP, Bank Negara chiefs, etc, well, they are all Bumiputras whose “special rights” are protected by the Constitution itself.

Jho Low, et al? This I got to think about for a while. It all depends, I suppose, on how much he could cough out, or get others to cough out. Seeing how the DoJ has seized quite a bit already and still on the hunt for more, not much. So…………..

  2. Anwar, you deserve the hero award for forgiving Mahathir. So the next move is to get rid of this criminal MO1 Najib for causing so much havoc to the people and the economic disaster to Msia. This a noble calling for both to work together to reduce the sufferings of millions and to seek justice!

  3. NSC, EC, etc its besides the main point.

Being meaningless and useless is actually a state which most easily falls into. Karl Marx calls them Lumpenproletariat. Its described as “outcast, degenerated and submerged elements that make up a section of the population of industrial centers” which include “beggars, prostitutes, gangsters, racketeers, swindlers, petty criminals, tramps, chronic unemployed or unemployables, persons who have been cast out by industry, and all sorts of declassed, degraded or degenerated elements.

BUT its actually unsurprising. The problem remain is that THEY KNOW NAJIB IS DRIVING THE SHIP THEY ARE ON IN DIRECTION OF OBLIVION. The natural reaction to Najib’s leadership is self-preservation – the should be removing Najib for their own self-perservation. Why this natural instinct does not kick in because – Hadi’s PAS – its primarily based on their faith of Hadi’s PAS dysfunction to keep them in power, not in Najib. If Hadi’s PAS is irrelevant, they would be lynching him and Rosmah into the streets.

NSC, EC, Supreme Council, AG, etc etc, it does not even compare to Hadi’s PAS and their constituent dysfunction..

  4. Personal sacrifice for the good of the nation – a mark of a true leader.

Former political prisoners who became leaders of the nation and led their respective nations to greater heights:

Kim Dae Jung, Nelson Mandela, Michelle Bachelet, Jose Mujica

Then there are the first generation leaders of the former colonies who were once political prisoners of the imperial powers
    e.g. Jomo Kenyatta, Kwame Nkrumah

  5. A great Man, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is willing to forgive ( but perhaps not forget ) , both the torments he was subjected to under Tun Dr Mahathir, and also Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak ? Blessed be to you for such Forebearance, but let The One Above be the guiding light, for Al’Mighty moves in ways beyond human comprehension who are beset with Frail mindsets and heart bereft of pristine judgement/s & Conduct !

  6. One had given a black eye on Democracy Monarchy and Judiciary, the other had being send to the former leper colony (Sungei Buloh Jail) because of him.

    The people are unconvinced !

  7. ‘..the former leper colony (Sungei Buloh Jail)..’

Have you been to Bamboo River or not? The Jail is quite far and opposite the main road from the ‘Leper Colony’ which is now Hosp Sg Buloh, which is the main center for treatment of infectious disease, including Zika, Syphilis and AIDS.

As for sweeping statements, i’d definitely give you a HD (High Distinction).

Who are the ‘People’ in your last sentence? What a brilliant piece of deductive rationalization!

What is the difference between ‘Wisdom’ and ‘Knowledge’?

I prefer wisdom calls rather than knowledge of conflated history, which does nothing for the deep shit you (or is it ‘we’) are wallowing in.

  8. As Don Vito Corleone himself would have solemnly declared, ‘ This is strictly business. It is nothing personal, I was bold to have ruffled his feathers so he gave me a black eye but that is the business of politics that we chose to be in… Nothing that can’t be sorted out by a bit of horse trading’ 🙂

  9. Two lions, (one aged, one caged), cornering a free-ranging rat?

The lions have no choice but to perform some slight-of-hand, while the rat is holding all the aces and may be forced to “show-hand”

Man, this poker game is coming to a climax soon. Stock up some sardines and baked beans, please.

  10. For clarifications:

The”leper colony” is meant to be a ” no go” place alluding to the old days when the mention of “Sungei Buloh” was dread and fearful, synonymous to a ” jail “, a ” no go” place. Just like a person when inviting you to have a meal of curry rice at Kajang, ( used to be Pudu), it meant the invitation to you is to be at the “Kajang Prison”.

The facts are there . The history is maintained . The main thing is, they are factually and historically correct and truthful. Conflating them is a matter of choice (as you already pointed your have ” preferred otherwise) and writing style .

The “people” is meant to be the” majority”

All statements made are factual and truthful to the best of my knowledge
What then, CLF, it is so shitty about it ?

BTW, There is nothing ” sweeping” or hollow about the statements, except for your sometime, indulging sarcasm and arrogance, like everyone else, may be a bit “kia su , too, sometimes . I am humbled by your award. But you can have your HD back.

TQ and each time I learn a little bit more from engaging a conversation with you ( not being funny ) because I think you are a highly qualified and well-read professional , likely with medical and or science majors- writing with profound skills.
