Are Malays pigeons in the Cage?

Comment by Dr. Lim Teck Ghee:  Are Malays pigeons in the Cage?

In March this year as the 1MDB and personal donation into the Prime Minister’s personal account scandals began to dominate the headline news, one of the country’s more radical Malay bloggers posted a piece in his blogsite. The subject of this post was the the future and fate of Malays in the country. The post had the provocative title,” Kita ni apa? Burung merpati dalam sangkar?” – READ http://deminegara.blogspot.my/ (see  below)

Al-Kebas’ Pigeons in UMNO’s cage

In the reflective and also somewhat poignant pensive piece the blogger, working and resident in the United States, had some advice for his compatriots living in Malaysia.

He began off his post by noting:

Ok, UMNO is history. In its current flavor, state and form . . . UMNO is no more. No point talking about what could have been . . . or the endeavors of many – including yours truly – to make the party see the light, to reform and renew and remain relevant in contemporary politics, to cleanse itself of corrupt criminals asphyxiating it to a gory demise.

Why UMNO will be history. And, possibly with the 1MDB scandal as the tipping point of his total disillusionment with UMNO, he admitted:

It was to no avail. We failed . . . and failed spectacularly as the “parti keramat Orang Melayu” got intractably hijacked by criminal lowlifes propped by a flaky collection of self-serving nincompoops and hangers-on wallowing in the muddy road to self-destruction . . . pathetic myopic fools merrily hurtling on a runaway trainwreck-in-the-making that will one day be remembered in the same light as other once invincible political forces that got arrogant and complacent, lost their way, imploded and consigned to the scrapheap of history . . . the Kuomintang, Congress Party, PRI, LDP, Golkar.

It is significant that in spite of his lack of faith and disenchantment with what many within his circle of readers would see as the only political vehicle capable of leading the Malays to a better future, he remained optimistic of the fate of his community and reassured his fellow bloggers and friends.

The Malays will do just fine . . . once we rid ourselves of the opiate of false security offered by a band of rogues at great socio-economic cost amid an induced sense of perpetual vulnerability to looming threats of imagined pendatang bogeymen lurking in every nook and cranny of the land.

The Gang of Pillaging Pirates in UMNO–Lots of Dough and Medals

We must realise the ludicrousness of the threat of impending doom of the Orang Melayu on our own Tanah Tumpah Darah. If the current gang of pillaging pirates were to lose power. We must be emancipated from this culture of irrational fear, of crippling institutional dependency, of inability to take charge and be responsible for our own welfare, our own destiny.

Since that post he has not written again. Was it his last hurrah as a staunchly ‘nationalistic’ and ‘patriotic’ blogger and opinion leader as he probably watched in pain and disbelief the way in which UMNO’s leaders have circled the wagons and sought to absolve the party and its chosen representatives in leading positions of power and authority of any wrongdoing or responsibility for the 1MDB controversy; as well as attempt to deflect the blame to the opposition, and other disloyal and traitorous elements working with foreign powers to “kill off the Malays”?

Can Malay emancipation take place?  Can his call for the emancipation of Malays “from this culture of irrational fear” be made by those at the top; and not just by the “nons” or the opposition parties? Those at the top can be said to include our royalties; Malay members of parliament and state legislatures; the vice chancellors in state universities; the top leaders in our civil service including military and police; the heads of all GLCs; the editors of Malay media; the Prime Minister, Deputy PM and all Malay Ministers and Deputy Ministers as well as our Muslim religious leaders?.

If this should happen, once this august grouping who undeniably in the words of the blogger have been “in charge” and “responsible for our own [Malay] welfare; our own destiny” speak out that “orang Melayu will never be dispossessed in the “Tanah Darah Tumpah” of Malays [and all Malaysians, I should add] and that “The Malays will do just fine”, then that burung merpati dalam sangkar may finally begin to be freed from its caged condition.

But then again that may not happen as perhaps the Malay elite sees it in their own self-interest – whatever the cost to the Malay community – to play – or at least not rebut – the victim game that has been the cause for the self-pity, and self imprisonment, of the community.

Demi Negara

Now, many have asked me, whither the Malays?

Apa akan jadi pada kita Orang Melayu? Siapa nak béla kita? Siapa nak jaga hak kita? Uhh?

What ABOUT the Malays and other Bumiputras? We will just wither and flutter away into the horizon like old leaves?Really?

Over twenty million of us will just die and dissipate into thin air if there is no UMNO? If there are no idiots like Najib Razak, Zahid Hamidi, Adnan Mansor, Nazri Aziz, Salleh Said Keruak, Ahmad Maslan, Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Rahman Dahlan, Azalina Othman and others of the same ilk – or for that matter – no PAS, no PKR, no Amanah, no JKKK, no JAKIM, no JHEOA to “take care” of us?

Kita ni apa? Burung merpati dalam sangkar? Tak bagi makan, mati?

Kita harus berjuang lah brader. Buang sifat malas. Perkuatkan minda. Tingkatkan ilmu. Jangan manjakan diri sangat. Tak payah terlalu sensitif, terlebih tersinggung, tercepat terkilan, terlajak terkempunan, tercenderung berdengki, tergigih berdendam. Dan buang lah segala macam kepercayaan karut . . . cerita hantu, kena santau, air jampi . . . amok, sawan, histeria, meracau, meroyan.

Orang lain dah lama ke Bulan . . . kita sebok pasal artis berBulan madu. Gerhana Bulan pun masih ramai tak faham dan tak mahu faham. Orang lain kaji Bintang jauh-jauh . . . kita obses dengan Bintang filem. Orang lain dah bertongkat laser . . . kita mengejar Tongkat Ali. Sudah sudah lah tu.

Snap out of it !

. . tiada ilmu, tiada jatidiri, tiada penghasilan, tiada harapan.

Kalau Tanah Melayu tak best, pi kerja atas kapal. Boleh tengok dunia. Pi USA pun boleh. Apa takot sangat? Dok kerja di Amerika tiga bulan, hang dah boleh cakap omputeh macam Nicholas Cage. Hok sét Kelaté, buléh kécék Inglih macé Arnold SusohNokEjo pong oké doh tuh. Susoh gapo nyo?

Wahai Orang Melayu, UMNO sudah tiada. Perjuangan parti itu sudah terpésong . .

Takkan Melayu Hilang Di . . . . start dengan Malaysia dulu. Lepas tu baru . . . Dunia.

  1. First construct a RM650m iconic park at rakyat’s cost with justification that it is for the use of rakyat but has anybody seen the token number of visitors to the existing park? Wit also be allowed to rot as has happened to other parks around the City and country and the reports of which can be obtained from the media and the latest being the ASTAKA in PJ and the many lakes and rivers which are polluted due to illegal waste [Ampang-Bt Antrabangsa, Langkawi Aquabeat, Bt Jalil Recreation Park, to name a few. All reported in the Star] and yet Authorities and the relevant Enforcement authorities appear to be blind to them.
MAY BE THERE IS NO ‘PROFIT’ IN MAINTENANCE AND/OR ENFORCEMENT?
MALAYSIA GETS THE BEST BUT THEN LETS IT ROT BY THE POOREST OF MAINTENANCE UNTIL THE DAMAGE IS SO GREAT THAT IT WILL BECOME ‘PROFITABLE’ VIA NEW MULITI-MILLION RM CONTRACTS.
This RM650m ambition may also suffer the same fate as those responsible may be of the same attitude and culture or reward without working and now to work even lesser.
COULD THIS RM650M PROJECT BE ANOTHER ONE LIKE MANY OTHERS IN THE PAST SINCE THE MID 1980s,TO ‘CREATE’ MILLIONAIRES AMONG SOME CONNECTED PERSONS WHO MAY GET THE CONTRACTS FOR THE LANDSCAPING AND PROCUREMENT OF TREES AND OTHER FACILITIES?

COULD THE ‘HSR’ PROJECT ESTIMATED TO BE COSTING RM65.0B BE IN THE SAME CATEGORY WHEN THE AMOUNT CAN BE USED TO CONSTRUCT A NEW RAILWAY LINE FROM JB TO KOTA BAHRU WHICH WILL BRING TO THE NEGLECTED EAST COAST STATES OF E.JOHORE-E.PAHANG-TRENGGANU-KELANTAN COMPARED TO THE PROPOSED ALIGNMENT WHICH IS ALREADY WELL SERVED BY SEVERAL TRANSPORT MODES SUCH AS HIGHWAYS-AIR SERVICES-RAILWAYS-EXP. BUSSES AND ARE WELL DEVELOPED. THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE EAST COAST ARE MUCH GREATER AND CAN BE COMPARED TO THE PAN-BORNEO HIGHWAY.

  2. Saw this on a blog. I wonder if it is true?

“Meanwhile, in what appears to be another part of a series of financial deals with China, entered into in order to cover 1 MDB’s losses and cure the financial volatility that has come with it, Malaysia’s PM Najib seems to have surrendered control over yet another bit of Malaysia, James Shoal, which lies just south of the IPIC/Mudabala SK 320 amd Deepwater Block SK2B”.

  3. Not quite correct: Taiwan’s Guomindang (Kuomintang) is thriving as it has reformed itself. New politics in a democratic Taiwan under President Tsai of the DPP.
Japan’s LDP is back in power – after losing to the Democratic Party of Japan.
Mexico’s PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) has also regained power.

  4. “Power tends to corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

It is not so much about the Malays or UMNO specifically. Any political system without competition and checks and balances will become corrupted in time. As James Madison remarked, “If men were angels, no government would be necessary.” Humans are decidedly not angels. Hence the need for institutional controls and checks. Put your trust not in a person’s character or virtue, but in a competitive political system and in institutional constraints on executive government power.

  5. This particular blogger that the article refers to has in the past exhibited the common trait of deploring ethnic Malay “disunity” and how this political disunity supposedly weakened the Malays. This is a manifestation of a backward authoritarian mindset as I have mentioned before. This ethnic irredentism (yes this is the proper term for this concept) was a key component of the European fascist movements preceding WWII. The Malays who parrot this would be well reminded that there was never a united Malay state. And even today, the Malays of the Nusantara are divided between several nation states and religions. Even Anwar Ibrahim when he was still DPM (and in UMNO) is on record honouring the Filipino nationalist Jose Rizal, who was a Christian, as a great Malay.

Indeed, the Malays in Malaysia who stick to a narrow concept of Malay identity are ironically deepening the disunity of the wider Malay race of the Nusantara, and are in fact relying on an ethnic identity that was created by the British for the portion of the Nusantara that they controlled.

Anyway, the irredentist idea that an ethnic group should be politically united is necessarily authoritarian because it seeks to abolish ideological and political competition within the group. The idea that there is only one political party or ideology for a particular ethnicity is antithetical to democracy.

  6. The non-Malays have done their part in everything they could to held build the country .They had repeatedly voiced their deep concerns of plight and welfare of the Malays and indigenous poor, regardless of race and religion.

It is about time more Malays speak up and act against the deceits and deceptions of the Umno Baru and its leaders rogue culture, which is main problem facing the Malays themselves.

Stand up and open the door to a new and better beginning-free yourselves for the sake of children and the country. Such rogue culture is Unacceptable or is relevant anywhere, whatsoever.

  7. Well said, veritas.
In my humble opinion, most ‘Melayus’ are just clay pigeons at the rate they are going. You don’t even have to shoot them – they’ll dissolve in water.
A homogeneous Malay polity is as real as the oft repeated phrase:
    “Et tu Brute?”
Take it as a threat or a curse.
Either way, Magical Keris waving is now an art form, by which they stab themselves.

  8. MO1 wants the Malays, the Orang Asli and other indigenous races to remain poor and be his “SAFE DEPOSIT” waiting for his handouts from the wang rakyat. The gravy train will keep his “generals” in line. The taxi drivers become the victims because their fleet owners are perceived to owe allegiance elsewhere

  9. Well said, Veritas! Just like there is no 1Malay, there is no 1Chinese, nor 1Indian. Genuinely allowing democracy to run its’ course is the only to create a 1 out from a diverse Malaysia.

  10. Mr. Din Merican,

I can’t access your site for a couple of days now. I always get timedout. Is it blocked ?

    Sorry to trouble you.

    Best Regards.
