Several well-known opposition and anti-establishment figures have come out against the Citizens’ Declaration put forward under the patronage of Mahathir Mohamad last week, because of his involvement.

They called for opposition supporters to reject Dr Mahathir as the leader of the “Save Malaysia” movement which arose out of the declaration.

Badrul Hisham Shahrin, or Chegubard, led a group of opposition supporters at a gathering on Saturday, with speakers from various groups questioning the aims and basis of the movement.

The 37-page declaration contains an extensive list of complaints and allegations about 1Malaysia Development Bhd and calls for the ouster of Najib Razak as Prime Minister. It also calls for reforms of the country’s political institutions.

Chegubard, a controversial figure in PKR, called out Dr Mahathir for his past transgressions against the people and the country during his 22 years Prime Minister.

He said the declaration was “a dead end”. “This is just a clash between Mahathir and Najib,” he said, according to Star Online. “We have been fighting against both of them. Why is it that now we must choose between them?”

Another pro-opposition figure, lawyer-activist Haris Ibrahim questioned the basis of the declaration. “Why does this initiative, this citizens’ declaration exists? It is because the people are scared. It is because the people did not rise up,” he was reported to have said.

Haris was among those who initiated the People’s Declaration in the late 2000’s  with a range of opposition and pro-reform supporters. That declaration contained an extensive list of objectives and a programme of legislative and other changes to improve Malaysia’s political and legal systems.

Badrul said those who attended yesterday’s meeting believed that Dr Mahathir was only using the declaration and the “Save Malaysia” campaign for his own political agenda and not in the wider interests of all Malaysians.

“We cannot raise him up as a figure of change,” he was reported to have said. “If he fights, that’s all right. If we (the people) make use of him, that’s all right. But to prop him up as the leader and place him in the front, that is not right.”

Kohi Kogi, a member of Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas (Jerit) questioned why the public were not consulted about the declaration before it was signed by the 45 people present, most of whom were opposition politicians and members of civil society.

“Why was there no consultation? Why was no feedback taken? Why so secretive?,” he was reported to have said. “Bersih was about to have a roadshow. If they were going to organise a roadshow, why didn’t they use the roadshow to get feedback before signing the declaration?”

  1. Another pro-opposition figure, lawyer-activist Haris Ibrahim questioned the basis of the declaration. “Why does this initiative, this citizens’ declaration exists? It is because the people are scared. It is because the people did not rise up,” he was reported to have said.

    Well, Haris is right.

CheguBard, however, was just sent in a hurry by the Anwar camp in PKR to sabotage Azmin.

Of the many San Andreas faults in this CD alliance, the most likely to actually cause a rift is PKR’s factionalism.

“Kohi Kogi, a member of Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas (Jerit) questioned why the public were not consulted about the declaration before it was signed”.

JERIT? Great name, not so great point.

Didn’t Haris and many others do this for you, years ago?

    Why reinvent the wheel?

Why have townhalls when the townhall is burning down?

  2. 60% of the country’s population consists of Malay Muslims.

A small majority of educated Malays are truly concerned about how the country is being ruled and riddled with corruption.

Another small minority of Malays want to oust the Najib gomen for their own self interest. e.g. Mahathir and his cohorts.

The majority Malays are brainwashed to believe in UmnoB, race and religious supremacy. They are not concerned about truth, good governance or corruption. They are happy with the little handouts as long as the country is ruled by Malays.

I believe this is the present scenario. Change can only happen when there is change to the Malay mindset. In the meantime the country will be plundered. Constitution will be ignored. We can only watch the country turning into a police state.

  3. Whatever one might say, everyone must be given a change to repent and change.
Going by their logic every prisoner must be condemned even if he is released from prison. Once a sinner, always a sinner???

  4. It looks like these 2 guys have so much hatred for 1 old man that they rather let the country “burn” , than to let the old man help to put out the fire.

This is childish self-centred behaviour but 2 persons who hold themselves as righteous persons.

Don’t be so naive to think that things will change for the better in the next GE. These crooks have been said to be involved in many crimes, stealing (or robbing) a general election will not be a taboo … and will be an easy feat.

Meanwhile these 2 men and those who share their “principles” can continue to dream of an utopia of righteous people.

  5. To have a mind caged by the failures of the past will see the inaction of the present as a failure at some point in the future. From a distance using comparative frame of reference one can see Malaysia has already morphed into dictatorship . Enemies have to set aside their differences and political principle to join hands to rescue the country. The keel is evened we can return to play politics with principle and honor otherwise the country will be stuck in abyss while the future generation will have noting forward to look to. Make your choice.

  6. please stop looking for past failures and faults of leaders who are now trying to do something better for the country’s future. Agreed TDM was not an angel neither are the rest who seem to loose focus of the current predicament Do these so called egoistic intellectuals condones the corrupt practices of the ruling parties and their leaders? If they cant accept water under the bridge then they deserve the government now and surely the future. Stay focussed. Stop trying to deviate from the real cause and objective. The future is more important than individuals misdeeds of the past.

  7. The Journalist and his crew are from the ABC which is the National TV Channel , The Team is from the famous 4 Corners program . It is a hard hitting investigative program that probes and digs deep into local and regional programs of national importance. It was in Malaysia investigating the the mysterious murder of the Altutunya and Sirul’s predicament . The arrest has now increased the focus on the murder and as to who gave the order to kill the mistress of VIPs. It has now put the Australian government to protest to Malaysia on the arrest of the journalists.

  8. Bros Dam n Hilmi. Well said. Who cares if the cat is green or orange as long as it can catch mice.
    Thats the bottom.line.

  9. “…everyone must be given a change to repent and change…”

@ Sam, I am not aware Dr M repented or have I missed something? Pray, tell us how had he ‘changed’.
