Ode to Freedom for Your Weekend

Your Weekend Entertainment: The Berlin Concert-Beethoven Symphony No 9 and Berstein’s West Side Story

For your weekend entertainment, Dr Kamsiah and Din Merican feature the music of the legendary composer and conductor Leonard Berstein. For this purpose, we have chosen the Berlin Freedom Concert as our first offering to you to remind us all that we in Malaysia have lost our fundamental freedoms. Our constitution is today a worthless piece of paper.

A corrupt  and repressive regime is in power and we have yet to replace it. We cannot make  it happen. Why? This is because we have to rely on a former authoritarian leader to show us the way. He can’t succeed because the present Prime Minister has outfoxed him. Tun Dr. Mahathir needs our help. Should we help someone who is part of our problem?

Our second offering is Berstein’s own composition West Side Story, which happens to be Din Merican’s favorite album as soundtrack from the movie of the same title. He wants to pay tribute to his favorite actress Natalie Wood (as Maria).

We hope you enjoy our choices for the February 20. 2016 weekend. Best wishes from Dr. Kamsiah who is in Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia for a dental conference and Din Merican in Phnom Penh.

  1. The musical genius and brilliance of Leonard Bernstein are reflected in his compositions for the West Side Story. Listen to the Overture. He certainly belongs in the pantheon of the greatest 20 the century composers, arrangers and conductors. Gone but immortalized.–Din Merican
