NEAC’s Dr. Zainal Aznam Yusof dies
by Debra Chong@http://www.themalaysianinsider.com
National Economic Action Council (NEAC) member Datuk Dr Zainal Aznam Yusof died of heart attack earlier this morning, just a few days short of turning 67.
Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) director-general Datuk Dr Mahani Zainal Abidin was reported by TV3 to have confirmed Zainal Aznam’s death at about 10am at the Universiti Hospital’s intensive care unit.
The former Bank Negara adviser (Assistant Governor) was buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery near his Taman Tun Dr Ismail home here just after Asar prayers today.
The Late Dr. Zainal Aznam Yusof–The Thespian
I was rather shocked to learn of the passing of Dr Zainal Aznam who I knew when he was Deputy Director-General at ISIS Malaysia. I kept in touch with him over the years. My wife Dr. Kamsiah and I wish to express our condolences of his wife and family.
Dr. Zainal Aznam was a kind intellectual who was generous with his views and ideas on the Malaysian economy and politics. He made his last impact when he asked that the New Economic Model should replace NEP, if Malaysia is to move up the Value Chain and become a developed nation.
His view of the NEP as an obstacle to the Way Forward (NEM) for Malaysia, the country he loved and served with honour and dignity, was not well received. But he insisted that the house must be rebuilt with a strong foundation. I agree with him.–Din Merican

I lost a good golf partner, who not only was good company on the golf course as well as the drinks and eating sessions after that but one who had further enhanced my knowledge and enriched my life.

Juliana, your Dad was a good man and my friend. I am sorry Dr. Kamsiah and I could not be there at your home to pay our last respects. By the time we knew of his passing, he was already laid to eternal rest at Bukit Kiara.
Hi Din Merican,
Your post lifts us up. Thank you so much for the kind words. We are here trying to follow through his vision. Come and join the Facebook group that we have put up.
Find me up and I’ll add you. Only a few friends are welcome to join. We are there to relive his mission and share our thoughts and memories of our late father. Please feel free to do so as well.
Thank you so much again. May God bless you.

Shazalina,
Your late father was a good friend to my wife, Dr. Kamsiah and I. He gave Dr. Kamsiah the link to his productions and we will cherish his gesture and kindness. We were taken by surprise when we heard of his passing. In fact, we only knew after his burial at Bukit Kiara. Sorry, we couldn’t there. Al-Fatihah for him always.
He was a fitness buff, well disciplined physically and intellectually. God knows best. I used to visit him when he was in ISIS Malaysia and shared my views with him about economics, politics and philosophy. We kept in touch. We last met him at Kopitiam, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail. To me, he was a very special man and we shall all miss him.
I am glad that you are starting a Facebook to remember Dr. Zainal Aznam. I also hope that you and the family can edit his papers and publish them. Salams and stay strong.–Dr Kamsiah and Din Merican
