Selangor: A Political Sandiwara in Progress

For Dramas, Just Come to Selangor

by Syed Nadzri @

Selangor's Political Iago

A SPY camera in the Menteri Besar’s office, a death threat on a Member of Parliament, a garbled “OMG” Twitter message from the State Assembly Speaker, a mere rap on the knuckles for a controversial state executive councillor — what the freaky mumbo is going on in Selangor?

The mishmash of peccadilloes is hitting in, one after another, over the past two weeks and they seem to suggest that, like Penang, Selangor is agonising over problems that come with administering a state government just into its third year at the reins.

These matters look serious enough as they concern security and governance at the highest level but sometimes, you can’t help but laugh at some of the cloak-and-dagger humdingers that could have come straight out of Get Smart — especially the spy camera blooper and the tweet line.

It was reported that the camera was found hidden behind a curtain in Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim’s office

Khalid: Just Govern Like LKY

on the 21st floor of the state secretariat building in Shah Alam late last week.

As the story went, the Menteri Besar uncovered it after tracking a constant beeping sound coming from behind the curtains. The beeps were actually signals emitted by the camera as it was running out of power — in short, it was a “low batt” alarm that blew the cover.

What kind of espionage was that? And it was hilarious to see the size of the “secret” camera that was used — as big as a desk diary. Such lack of sophistication in this day and age of wireless motion-sensor spy cams with solar charger and high-definition wristwatch spy cams.

It was a sloppy and amateurish act of spying in every way. But the bigger issue is, who could be behind this. Obviously an adversary due to the sinister nature. But who planted it there? Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo? Not likely, unless the former Menteri Besar and now state opposition leader is a master of disguise. In the present circumstances, Khalid’s guards would not even let him past the front gate of the secretariat.

Besides, Dr Khir is also too busy catching sand thieves! So, it had to be someone from the inside, and this will be the state’s greatest mystery since the death of Teoh Beng Hock at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Shah Alam last year.

If I were Khalid, I would just stay quiet on the discovery and just play along — talk to myself, sing Madu Tiga loudly off-key or strike bodybuilder’s poses in front of the camera every now and then. And utter a few things to lead them up the garden path. They would never come back to do it again, after listening to the singing.

Of course, a more serious issue is this — what if it was not a spy camera behind the curtain but a bomb? Which brings us to the death threat received by DAP Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya Utara Tony Pua on Wednesday.

Oxford Educated Cyber Technopreneur Tony Pua

Pua, an outspoken Ivy League alumnus, said an envelope bearing a Tangkak, Johor, postal mark and containing a bullet and note was mailed to his service centre in Damansara Utara.

Perhaps the young MP should know that this kind of intimidation comes with the job, especially the harder jobs of the world, like being a newspaper editor. Adding to all the action was the “severe reprimand” meted out by the DAP disciplinary committee on State Executive Council member Ronnie Liu over support letters issued in his name.

Many neutrals describe this as a mere rap on the knuckles and not harsh enough, considering DAP’s public stand on such matters as tantamount to corruption. Was favouritism at play here?  But the one that takes the cake was the revelation of the real message behind the tweet OMG!

Real culprit is freed posted by State Assembly Speaker Teng Chang Khim after the sacking of Selangor DAP secretary and Klang municipal councillor Tee Boon Hock from the party for allegedly issuing several support letters using Liu’s letterheads.

Whichever way, it was certainly a loaded message in the light of developments in the party and the rather well-known differences among certain quarters in DAP. But when Teng explained that his tweet was actually a reference to a character in a Chinese movie he was watching, 14 Blades (Jin Yi Wei), many were bemused. But I guess he has been given the benefit of the doubt. Chinese movie? Yeah right: “LOL. They shud b BFF frm now.”

Back to the original question: just what is going on in Selangor? It could be an unusual astronomical alignment or some other mysterious forces at work. More likely, all this is just a sign of plain administration fatigue setting in, two years after the Pakatan Rakyat government took over. And we’re just getting to half-time.

  1. Agree that KhirToyo is not the master disguise to do the sham job. But remember that there are remnants of his admin in the office who could be used as tool to do the sinister. Smart but not smart

  2. FYI

some people are making survey by calling residential area in Hulu Klang asking question about Khalid, Azmin and Khir Toyo (???)

among the question is who had done the best for the interest of selangor voters. question about Khir is just a decoy I believe.

Azmin has started his move and it seems that Khalid days as MB will be over before the PKR election in Nov 2010 except if DAP did some stunt to reverse Anwar’s mind

a political orgy going on in Selangor, actually

  3. Agreed with this phrase…”all this is just a sign of plain administration fatigue setting in”…..esp.when the Khalid’s administration, is managing in the CAT (Clean,Accountable,Transparent) way and not the Khir Yoyo’s Penyapu Way … of sweeping the Dirt under the Carpet or Sweeping the Resources into their or cronies Pockets….also note that a lot of “energy” is wasted on countering and neutralising the unjustified “attacks” from the MSM and Previous Administration !!!

    Hidup Malaysia !!!

  4. Good one Syed. I can’t help laughing.
It is definitely planted by people inside PKR or in his office. What you call an insider’s job.
Who else are allowed access to his office except for his so-called friends.
I agree with Syed thatKhalid could have just treated it as a joke and start singing Madu Tiga.
Madu? I heard from PKR people that Khalid has a second wife and is heading one of the Selangor Department.
Could his first wife planted the I spy device?
Can someone verify the truth about the second wife.
Or is this another joke of the PKR on Khalid who seems to be on the wrong side of the PKR favorites like Azmin and Gang.
Funny yeah, barely three years in office, and PKR has so much drama.
Is this some mere distractions or comic relief to make the people forget that PKR is losing out in Selangor?
Maybe a ruse to accuse UMNO and BN as is common in our politics.

  5. Tony Pua is an “Ivy League alumnus”?
The Ivy League is a U.S. grouping of elite colleges and universities
formed for sports purposes. Tony Pua is an Oxford graduate, as far as I know.

BN propagandist cannot even get his facts right??

  6. Hahaha.., Right on Dr. Phua! This writer is an Oxfam receipient. This hoo-ha about Selangor is strictly “imagination” and dreams in the Red Chamber.

  7. The writer is a mercenary journalist for UMNO. He has a twisted, distorted and corrupted brain.
He is doing what he is being paid to do. He brings shame to journalism.

  8. Din decided to be generous ( caring and sharing in true Ramadan spirit) by pasting a report fresh from NST. Sure makes Sayang BN’s day as you can tell by her/his rejoinder !!!

  9. Sayang Bangsa… fitnah dalam bulan yang mulia ni tak baik. Don’t spin about Khalid’s purported 2nd wife if there is none or if you’re just gossipping. You are sticking out like a sore thumb in this blog.

  10. Anything from the MSM such as The Star, NST, UTUSAN, SUN are considered NOT TRUSTWORTHY.

  11. The Project is funded by a non-profit organization headed by Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf who is educated in England, U.S. and guess where else?? Malaysia. He refused to condemn Hamas.

  12. Dear Sentinel and Walter

Didn’t I say can someone please confirm this story? I was just reporting what a PKR pal told me when I went to a meeting in Shah Alam last week. This guy even supplied her name, date of birth, the agency she heads and her salary. Obviously he is in Azmin Ali’s camp. I told him I do not believe it as I know Pak Khalid is a good family man who plants beautiful flowers at his Damansara Heights home.

Anyways, Ummi Haflida is back in the news with the Pempena graft court in today’s papers.
Wow this Ali family is something isn’t it? One is Anwar’s crown prince, another is a proclaimed gay. Must be the water they drink near Klang Gate.
Only God and Tan Sri Khalid know. What is wrong if he married to another woman? He would do it in an Islamic way. –Din Merican

  13. Hmm.. Bean, very hangat topic thru’out the States huh? Mark my words, Bloomberg ain’t got the cojones to proceed with this, if he intends to run another term as mayor or go on to the Fed level. Even Obama got plastered on this. Methinks the New York tea-parties about to revolt. Plenty emo showing, especially with the mass suicide bombings in Iraq today.

  14. Khalid and Azmin Ali are political rivals. But let PKR grassroots decide who should replace Dr. Syed Husin Ali (if the Senator refuses to change his mind about giving up the post of Deputy President), assuming Khalid decides to enter the race. I am not willing to bet who the winner will be since both have strengths, one a corporate figure with strong management credentials, and the other, Azmin, is a superb and savvy political man whose loyalty towards Anwar is beyond doubt.

  15. If the Opposition, especially in Penang and Selangor, want to be taken seriously by the voters, they should persevere with their plans of good governance and not allow distractions to get in the way.

  16. Here come political pundits and soothsayers, Menyalak-er. Me not qualified. Only to add that Khalid is a polarising figure, abrasive in the way he goes about doing his job (a legacy of the earlier days) who thinks he is now managing Selangor Incorporated with profit maximisation as its objective.

Under him Selangor Inc. might just turn out to be another criminal enterprise Malaysian Inc. has become under Mahathir.

  17. Din

Yes indeed. It is Tan Sri Khalid’s right to marry anyone. He can afford to marry four if he wants to.
But I think the gossip man’s quarrel is about Khalid giving a plum job to the woman with a big pay.
He showed me the lady. Quite a looker.

  18. Since mentioned pay(total compensation)…believe that our MPs and ADUNs are grossly underpaid and don’t the BN govt. loves to keep it this way…..knowing that BN’s MPs and ADUNs can easily get “extra” in multiples of their official pay but the “poor” opposition MPs and ADUNs cannot get out of the Money Trap with just the Official Pay(Compensation). The Total Compensation of the Menteri Besar of a State should have a Comparative Worth Compensation of a first tier Public Listed Company’s CEO…i.e. easily RM100,000/=per mth. also our MPs and ADUNs should have @ least double their present Total Compensation… when given the appropriate Comparative Worth Compensation with the Private Sector….. can come down Hard if still involved in corruption.

    Hidup Malaysia !!!

  19. Dear Fairplay

Curiously in Bolehland, our MPs and ADUNs also have to spend much of their time fixing things such as clogged drains and traffic jam problems. The civil service should be doing these!
Our elected political representatives should be spending their time passing legislation and deciding public policies instead.

Nevertheless, kudos to hard-working ADUNS such as Subang Jaya’s Hannah Yeoh and MPs such as Segambut’s Lim Lip Eng.
