Indonesian  Legislators react to Zainuddin Maidin’s comments on President BJ Habibie

Indonesia’s House of Representatives will soon pen a letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to formally condemn former UMNO minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin for labelling their former President B.J. Habibie a “dog of imperialism”.

Legislators from the lower House had taken offence to Zainuddin’s remarks, which have added further strain to Malaysia’s already fractured relationship with its regional neighbour.

House Deputy Speaker Pramono Anung was quoted as saying in the Jakarta Globe today that as a former Information Minister, Zainudin should have known better how to communicate well and exercise better decorum.

He added a warning that such remarks from Malaysian politicians could hurt bilateral relations between Malaysia and Indonesia. We’ll send a letter to the Malaysian prime minister. We condemn such things. We think it is improper to make such a statement, not to mention it came from a former information minister,” he said, according to the English-language daily.

Zainuddin had criticised Habibie’s recent public lecture at Universiti Selangor in an Utusan Malaysia editorial on Monday, calling the latter arrogant and likening him to Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim before ending the article by calling both men “dogs of imperialism”.

“I can’t imagine how tortured the audience at [Universiti Selangor] must have felt to have to listen to a man with such a high ego, especially after he finally got an opportunity to speak in front of people whom he deems as dumb, after a long period when Indonesian people no longer wish to listen to him nor respect him,” Maidin said in the editorial, according to the Jakarta Globe.

The daily also reported that the chairman of Indonesia’s ruling Democratic Party, Anas Urbaningrum, had issued a similar statement to protest Zainuddin’s insult.

“The former Malaysian minister’s party, namely UMNO, needs to teach him a lesson on decorum. They shouldn’t have brought former President Habibie into their political competition by insulting him. This is truly regrettable,” he was quoted as saying.

Marty NatalegawaAnas also urged the Indonesian government to demand Zainuddin apologise directly to Habibie for his insult, the paper said. But in a statement on Tuesday, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa (left) had said that the government would not respond to the article, brushing it off as trivial.

The Minister reportedly called Zainuddin’s views “silly” but said he had no interest to read the article, pointing out that the government has more important tasks to fulfil than paying attention to a former Malaysian minister.

Yesterday, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali demanded Zainuddin apologise for his insults against Habibie and Anwar, agreeing that his remarks could add further strain to Malaysia’s relationship with Indonesia.

  1. This fool shouldn’t be taken seriously. All Indonesia has to do is pull up his interview with Al-Jazeera during the 1st Bersih rally and listen to his stupid opinions on ‘un-democratic’ countries..Burma and Myanmar are the same…

  2. Perhaps Zainuddin Maidin must realize that he was just a “guru sekolah rendah” when he decided to quit and become a reporter with Utusan and finally made it to the top of the heap because of political patronage. He should consider himself lucky in terms of career progression but he must realize, he is just lucky and should just be thankful for that. Go play with the grandchildren because intellectually, he is no match for the likes of Pak Habibie or Saudara Anwar.

Come to think of it, the same advice should be given to another Deputy Minister Puad Zarkashi who is poor in English and pushing for maths and science to be taught in Malay… please be thankful for your own career progression.

BTW Puad, is it true you wrote that piece of note to commemorate the Sultanah of Johor DYMM Zarith Sofiah’s visit to UTM in JB few years back? LOL!

  3. I welcome their action with open arms and will help them Fork that stupid ingrish speaking former asshole of a minister, and a mamak too, listen not all mamak’s are bad, just mostly the ones in Umno, fact..Oouch!!!

  4. ZAM is from my state, Kedah, and I am embarrassed that we can produce someone like him to be a Cabinet Minister. He is a simpleton who fails to understand common courtesy and diplomacy. You don’t insult any guest to our country, especially a former President of the Republic of Indonesia.

The Indonesians have every right to be offended by ZAM’s article in Utusan Malaysia, the propaganda arm of UMNO. I find it strange that because Bapak Presiden Habibie is a close friend of Anwar Ibrahim, we must insult him. That is silly and stupid. Zam simply put is kurang ajar. Even Hussin cannot defend him.

Our Prime Minister should call up the editor of Utusan Malaysia and ask him for an explanation. He should also give ZAM a dressing down for his article. Will the Prime Minister do it? Not likely since he always adopts a silence mode. Our relations with Indonesia has not been good because we are not able to manage it well.–Din Merican

  5. We do have idiots as ministers in Cabinet. They have their mouths at the other end of their alimentary canal. Insulting opposition politicians is their normal trade mark, but insulting foreign dignitaries???? A real idiot… And an UMNO minister to boot.

  6. I have been doing business in Indonesia for years. Truth is Indonesian never liked our govt very much. In the past the people would differentiate the people from our govt but these days because of high handedness of our govt and govt-link people, increasingly don’t differentiate between us ordinary Malaysian and our govt anymore..

    Najib Harus Minta Maaf

Kalau serangan atas tokoh Indonesia lainnya?

Jadi Perdana Menteri Najib Razak wajib minta maaf?

    Insya Allah, doakan saja.

  8. We will pray for the winning of DS Anwar Ibrahim,,, . We hope that our relationship will be better in the future with his leadership……. from Indonesia with LOVE

  9. There you go….the Reaction, and why Not ? Totally justified by the anger of our close Neighbour.

Simply put, Childish behaviour by ZAM. showing tantrums, just because he could not ‘tolerate’ two Iconic Inttelectuals meeting in his own homeland. And he felt ‘small’ ! !
The wisest thing to do now, is for Tun Dr Mahathir to force upon his blue-eyed boy, to tender an Applogy & and retract, since it was Tun Mahathir’s policy ” tidak suke kepada yang Cerdik Pandai….” which catapulted this ‘ boy ‘ to fame & glory…..And now, Kaboom… ! !

  10. Do you guys really think this Zam’s opinionated outburst is strictly his own?

I had the unfortunate experience of meeting some entitled UMNO hacks, while visiting Gadja Mada University, Jogjakarta a few years back. They had an air of superiority and haughtiness about them, that reminded me that they went beyond the realms of the ‘Ugly Malaysian’ – the ‘Degenerate Malay’ (which like all degenerates, are God’s Chosen). And boy, could they ‘menghina’ the Indonesians, albeit quietly.

They even asked my guide named Xavier, why he had such a ‘funny’ name, and he replied he was a Roman Catholic, which set off another round of recriminations and disgust. My young friend was so perplexed, that he asked me later: ‘Pak, do most Malaysians believe we are dogs to be kicked around?’ I answered: ‘No. Only those wearing the Tudung Merah, their sheepish husbands and anak2.’

You see, the UMNO mentality in general, has always been one of the very Greek idea of: HUBRIS. And you guys are dreaming if you expect Jibs, Zam, Umno or even, Utusan to tender a heart-felt apology to Pak Habibie. Their platitudes are inherently false and insincere.

  11. Pernyataan Tan Sri Zainudin Maidin yg menghina Mantan Presiden Republik Indonesia Prof. Ing.

  12. The fact is that, Pak BJ Habibie is way more intelligent than this mamakdin.. That’s a fact.. Pak Habibie and my indonesian friends please ignore this “Turkeys” comment.

Bodoh tetapi ego nya besar.–Din Merican
