Rosmah Mansor on Business Ethics
“Ultimately, ethics is about doing the right thing; not taking that which isn’t yours; not inflating expenses that you are not entitled to; not manipulating facts and figures with the intention to mislead; not compromising on quality of services and products to maximise profits; and not lying and misrepresenting the truth to look good.”–Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor
Bernama reports:
DOHA: The wife of the Malaysian Prime Minister, Rosmah Mansor, yesterday
urged women to take a more active role in their institutions and organisations in order to strengthen business ethics.
She said women could play an important role in strengthening ethics in business because their nature of being mothers and nurturers required that they imbued trust in the relationship they built and developed.
“As mothers, we have a responsibility and opportunity to imbue the right values and inculcate morally sound behaviour in our children. These are values and behaviours which will make them ethical people.Further, our roles that include multi-tasking between the home and the workplace demands that we deliver promises to the people who depend and count on us,” she said in a keynote address titled “Role of Women in Strengthening Business Ethics” at the Qatari Businesswomen Association’s programme at the Inside Investor Forum Asia 2012, here.
The two-day forum from Monday, organised by the international media group and consultancy, Inside Investor, is a high-level business event which brings together heads of state, investors and top-level company executives from the ASEAN and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to identify investment opportunities in the two regions.
Rosmah said women should extend these qualities in ensuring that the companies they worked for delivered on their promises and upheld governance and ethics at all levels of the organisation at all times.
She said the rising participation of women in the global workforce also provided an opportunity for women to play a bigger role in strengthening business ethics.
“There are many reports that predict the 21st Century as the century for women. We see rising involvement of women in boardrooms and executive positions globally.
“In March 2012, Business Insider revealed that women hold 21% of senior management positions globally. This study shows that women are in an advantageous position to strengthen ethics in business,” she said.
Rosmah said that in Malaysia, the government was also encouraging companies to increase the number of women on their governing boards to at least 30% by 2015 and, currently, on-the-job training programmes – most of it focused on strengthening ethics in business – were being held to prepare these women for board positions.
Rosmah said business ethics was important to the company, the consumer as well as the employees and stakeholders, and for the healthy growth of an economy.
“Ultimately, ethics is about doing the right thing; not taking that which isn’t yours; not inflating expenses that you are not entitled to; not manipulating facts and figures with the intention to mislead; not compromising on quality of services and products to maximise profits; and not lying and misrepresenting the truth to look good,” she said.
Those who did not follow ethical rules might have short-term success, but would fail in the market in the long run, she added.
Rosmah said Qatari and Malaysian businesswomen associations could develop a common platform for debates and deliberations on business ethics for insights, learning and sharing experiences.
“We could organise joint programmes regularly that mutually serve both the Gulf and ASEAN. These could include educational and business programmes as well as exchange of talents that will strengthen business ethics in both regions,” she said.
Meanwhile, in a separate event, Rosmah received the “Honour for Charitable Commitment and Philanthropy” award in appreciation of her dedication and commitment to charity work.
The award was presented by the Vice-Chairwoman of the Qatari Businesswomen Association, Aisha Al-Fardan.

A Joke or what? She is least qualified to talk about ethics. Tak malu.
does she know what she’s talking about? everything she lectures about ethics as per above, is the opposite of what she practises. Doesn’t she has any shame at all?
Could this good lady not direct her observations to the PM – could have far-reaching consequences for the country if PM listens to her, handbags notwithstanding.
Auntie Rosie dares not speak on such subject at home as brickbats would descend on her. Perhaps she bribed her way to this conference since she has no direct experience in business much less to opine on business ethics.
I am all for gender equality but she has no moral standing to preach such debilitating subject as her husband’s party UMNO and BN preside over the country’s steep slide in CPI and business competitiveness. Her reported spendthrift on ostentatious trappings is legendary and a significant drain on public coffers. Yet those in the know of this personal habit of hers are fearful of reprisal if they speak publicly.
But, but.. Lady Gagah ain’t no businessperson. True, she deals, dabbles, dictates and concocts, but hers not very mercantile since they are all monopolies. After all, she’s our very own self proclaimed FLOM, botoxed or otherwise.
What on earth, is this forum about? They have a Qatari businesswomen Association? So she represented the Malaysian Businesswomen? Heck, the last time i was there – a lady shopkeeper tried to sell me a plastic puffer-fish made in China!
Please lah Bernama, report something of substance, not stuff like this. Your editors ought to cut down on their doses of Tonik Cap Gajah and Kacip Fatimah!
There is a serious ethical question and the most violent element of ignorance.
‘Those who did not follow ethical rules might have short-term success, but would fail in the market in the long run’
Would this be an instance of Najib’s ‘entrenched codes of behaviour’, more precisely, misbehaviour, when he addressed anti-corruption fighters from 100 countries last week? What ever that means, but the point driven home by both of them is obvious – they are least entitled to address the one on corrupt habits and the other on ethics
Yawn my dear compatriots, good night.
Rosmah should remember that she is what she is today because of her husband’s position. Her opinion is worthless had she not been the wife of the PM.
Note for example, the political spouses of PM of Singapore and Thailand, we never hear them behaving like Rosmah. Just look at Michelle Obama, the spouse of the most powerful man in the world today, she is ever supportive of her husband.
She is a Princeton educated lawyer but I bet my bottom dollar she would not comment the way Rosmah did on ethics , about doing the right thing; not taking that which isn’t yours; not inflating expenses that you are not entitled to; not manipulating facts and figures with the intention to mislead; not compromising on quality of services and products to maximise profits; and not lying and misrepresenting the truth to look good.
All of which most Malaysians are doubtful of her own moral and ethics, meddling with the office of PM. Her flamboyant and “billionaire” lifestyle do not represent what she tried to convey at this conferance.
Rosmah has to learn to be diplomatic and be an asset instead of a liability to her husband who, despite what some people say, is a PM I am beginning to pity.
This FLOM is Najib’s albatross. I have yet to meet another PM’s spouse who is such a pain to our nation. Her greed, her arrogance, her defiance and her basic insecurity requiring her to seek public adulation are laid bare for all of us to see.
Najib will fall on the count of three (politically speaking) because of her. What tragedy for a man who can have any other woman he wants, given the awesome political power at his disposal. But when it comes to Rosie, he melts. Mungkin dah kena jampi teruk dan semua nya di kunci.
It is a good speech, contents wise. Alas, if only her words can be in sync with her personal conduct and actions.
The Prime Minister’s wife knows what constitutes ethical behaviour when she said and I quote her “…ethics is about doing the right thing; not taking that which isn’t yours; not inflating expenses that you are not entitled to; not manipulating facts and figures with the intention to mislead; not compromising on quality of services and products to maximise profits; and not lying and misrepresenting the truth to look good.”
What a pity. She could have made a difference for our Prime Minister Najib the way Michelle does for President Barack Obama. –Din Merican
Pasal Rosmah ni, aku tak mau campur sangatlah, tapi sukacita diingatkan kepada Rosmah Mansor, jangan berlebih-lebih sangat hingga rakyat meluat kepada Barisan Nasional disebabkan publisiti yang kurang menyenangkan. Mengalahkan menteri sedangkan kamu bukanlah Menteri, Timbalan Menteri, EXCO, Ahli Parlimen, ADUN, Ketua Jabatan, Kakitangan Kerajaan, malahan kamu pun bukannya Pengerusi JKKK/JKKKP.
Saya rasa tertipu. Tonton sendiri.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjTjwdAKuFY&feature=youtube_gdata_player
.
Ethics: does that include not taking the Bombardier Global Express private jet to Doha to deliver this speech?
Dato’ , agreed, they read out good speeches all the time, and they believe every word of it, and that is what hurts us most. They, I mean politicians in power, and now, of course their wives.
Foreigner can’t believe the daily hectoring by our politicians. Every day advice from MPs and ADUNs stare at us when we skim the papers – yes, I skim through because I have better things to do than read mostly ghost-written pontifications from politicians who had never intended to keep their part of the
bargain at the Point of Sale, of their General Election Manifesto.
Why are we even talking about this biaacth?
Wow! Look who’s lecturing on ethics? As a leader’s wife the speech is most commendable. But, beside just giving speeches and have them printed the other element…action is deadly lacking.
She is someone born with the golden spoon, in the right class and now the Prime Minister’s wife does carry all the attributes to make things work in her favour. She has all the resources to put things in place for a successful business persona. Other ladies given the right dose of attributes could be as successful as her. So what is there to horn about?
In the area of gaining success through merits, they are yet to be proven. Sometime it is good to humble oneself especially when you are a wife of a important man not trying to overshadow him. She is a woman who does not know her place beside a man.
Malaysian’s businesses are all about who you know and how powerful your support are. They can’t be bothered to run the business efficiently because opportunities are abundant. There are bosses who spent millions nursing their egos than to seek advices from the more experienced professionals.
So don’t be too happen for our economy. Most are pumped up by the people’s money. The days of reckoning are here and with BN return to power we are doomed.
Goodness !!! all these while i thought our politicians are the biggest double-talker, now we have their wife doing the same thing, in a foreign country pulak…. She must be thinking all the foreigners are stupid fool or totally ignorant of what is happening in this country. Simply have no shame…..
The speech must have been written by Soros…
Most Malaysians probably do not look up to this lady due to much adverse perception on her. Though the messenger may be disliked, the message she delivered was valuable. Not a great many people are fully qualified to talk about ethics anyway.
Yes, it has to be a joke. ..an awful, sick joke. She seems to have a good speech writer, though.
As if to say that snatching away someone else’s hubby is not a lie and not misrepresenting the ” truth ” , so as to look good ?
That surely must be un-ethical Busy-ness prying into other people’s ‘ private ‘ business which was floundered by the Intrusion of busy-bodies supposedly preaching good Ethics…. the proverbial Crab that is…….
Are they trying to humiliate the M’sians by having her speak of business ethics?
Just investigate her handbags and watches and we’ll know she has no authority or credibility whatsoever
Din, you think too highly of this “bag” to bring Michelle Obama into the picture.
She couldn’t even stack-up to Jeanne Abdullah or Siti Hasmah.
When the fat lady sings we’ll be in for a trashing. Looks like she is about to do so. I am heading for the nearest exit. Ilham, where are you?
Din,her speech is written and reviewed by speechwriters and not from her own thoughts and writing.Secondly, agreed she is the most unsuitable role person to speak on ethics. She has been a great liability to the nation’s image from her grossly extravagant life-style,hairdos,wardrobes,handbags,jewellery and you just name it.If one were to go to the many blogs, she is very much discredited lady.Nothing great to talk , write about her or learn from her.I need to stop here, before I get my life roasted because I can feel the blood pressure jiving and rising unusually fast and abnormal.
Hussin, correct me if I am wrong here. What you just said is that Rosmah do qualify as someone to speak on ethical issues. OMG, we are really screwed…Rosmah qualifies to speak on ethics! Someone please…help me here! Rosmah on ethical…and you have Hussin agreeing. Of all you know the content of the speech may not be from her…they have what you called a speech writer okay. All she needs to do is just deliver the speech without actually comprehending what its really mean. Credit to speech writer, whoever that may be.
Hussin go tell her to preach to her husband and company before even dare lecturing us. I am about to pull out all my hair…Rosmah on ethics.
Goodness, how did i miss that : “….about doing the right thing; not taking that which is’nt yours….”
Taken already….laaaaa
“not many qualify to speak about ethics” @ Hussin
Thats because the current government doesnt know what it means, will not uphold it and therefore it is non existent . So why then bother to allow her of all people to talk about it? Do you think the world is stupid? is Qatar that dumb as to not know?
You guys think this is ridiculous?
Think again. The ‘Malaysia Week’ event in London’s South Bank, which just concluded yesterday, cost our tax-payers 5 million pounds (RM30mil) – i.e. 1 million pounds per day. Is that ethical? Especially when we have our most vaunted soon-to-be-expired ministers – like Rais Yatim and Ng Yen-Yen running the show.
CLF, Ministers trying to sell Malaysia to the previous colonial masters, ha ha. What is it about Malaysia that the Londoners don’t know already, MAS fly A 380 twice daily, Air Asia is also the QPR sponsor, hundreds of Malaysian restaurants abound in London and if you go shopping at Harrods chances of meeting a Malaysian is almost 1 in 2. Maybe Rais and YenYen trying to make London like Chow Kit for Malaysians. Its really for the benefit of Malaysians visiting ole London, not the other way round.
And her next speaking engagement is at The Weight Watchers Worldwide in Lalaland, ouch!
Now, now.., orang malaya – they wanna also do it in Washington DC, Beijing and Dubai. So it’ll probably work out to be close to RM120-150 million annually for a lil bit of syiok sendiri. When it comes to celebrity, these fly-by-night operators are the epitome of big spenders. Cost benefit ain’t in their equation.
Heck, i would understand if they go to Hollywood and invite Bragelina or Lady Gaga as mascots to grace the function, especially since the rag-heads over here see them as ‘corrupting’ influences and would throw a tantrum if these real celebs dare to step foot into our sanctified soil.
But then – there’s where bang for buck resides, not ex-colonial masters whose national dish is akin to inedible curry! We need real ambassadors of culture not half past six one’s we have whose Malaysian identity revolves around UMNO.
CLF Check out the Board of Directors of Tourism Malaysia. It looks more like a BN company.
To do Hollywood they would need the jet setter playboy that spent $ 160,000 in one night in NYC and hosting Paris Hilton. No fish head curry dinner, its for you and me. These people dine on lobster, champagne and caviar, not cincalok and keropok lekor with a mug of toddy or samsu thrown in for yam seng.
Haha.. true OM, but then bimbos like Paris Hilton ain’t worth it. No need to tell Auntie FLOM.
The TDC flurs are all into celeb stuff – poor ole Jimmy Choo was minding his own shoes when they yanked him to the opening. There are rumors that the ole horse Yen-Yen insists on the local TDC rep bringing her a bouquet of flowers while she’s still on board her first class seat in MAS Cargo. Real Bollocks-wood stuff. While we may hee and haw and look askance at such poor taste, the ethics of closing the Embassy in Qatar 3 days during FLOM’s visit certainly causes guffaws of incredulity at the sheer ampu-bodekism prevalent in certain ministries. It’s just possible they needed the manpower just to transport the crates of ‘ethical’ stuff purchased by her most munificent hairpiece.
Perhaps Malaysians have sunk so low in merit, intelligence and discernment of duty – that these civil servants are practicing Idolatry, without realizing it. That my friend, is no-no for monotheists like you and me.
All U floks, Guys, Ask Yourself What is FPTP, First Past The Post System[British System] used for the past 55 yrs in Mysia when Whatever Election takes, The Election Commission knows about it, it only benefits the BN, WIN BASED ON NUMBER OF SEATS NOT NUMBER OF VOTES, commen sence says that BN up to today has most no of seats in PARLIMENT ! so automaticly BN wins right?
What non of U all knows this ! oh my god how ……..U people is.
