LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Fareed Zakaria, the Time Magazine Editor-at-Large and CNN host who recently admitted to plagiarism, resigned from his position on Yale University’s board to reevaluate his professional life, a Yale spokesman told TheWrap.

In a letter to Yale President Richard Levin, Zakaria – a Yale alumnus – said he planned to focus on his work in the wake of a plagiarism inquiry that raised questions about the veracity of the prominent reporter’s large oeuvre of journalism.

“I am reexamining my professional life and I have recognized that, in order to focus on the core of my work, I will have to shed some of my other responsibilities,” Zakaria wrote in the letter, obtained by TheWrap. “My service at Yale is the single largest commitment of time, energy and attention outside of my writing and television work.”

Time and CNN briefly suspended Zakaria this month for lifting paragraphs from a New Yorker essay about gun control and re-purposing them, almost verbatim, in his Time column.

Yale also launched a review of Zakaria’s position on the board last week, but that process was curtailed after the journalist’s resignation.”My colleagues and I are deeply grateful for Fareed Zakaria’s generous contribution of time and service to the Yale Corporation these past six years,” Levin said in a statement to TheWrap. “His keen intelligence and broad knowledge of world affairs have enlightened our discussions, and his appearances on campus have benefited our students and faculty. We will miss him as a colleague, a contributor and a friend.”

But last week, both news outlets said they found no other instances of plagiarism, termed the matter an “isolated incident” and reinstated Zakaria. He is expected to return to CNN on Sunday, August 26.

  1. Fareed Zakaria did the right thing for his alma mater. I am also glad that he will back at CNN at GPS soon. He is an outstanding personality and will redeem himself over time. Plagiarism is a serious ethical issue in the United States and elsewhere. In Fareed’s case, it was an “isolated” incident. –Din Merican

  2. If he were to be in Malaysia, he would probably made a Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaya. or even Minister of Higher Education.

No way, Sam. Only UMNO types are allowed to lead our Universities–to mediocrity. Of course, for UM, we have a VC in Ghauth who is trying to rebuild it into top ranked institution.–Din Merican

In Bolehland plagiarism is never an ethical issue so long as it involves Umnoputras and those linked to the party. Even bogus university degrees are considered genuine. That’s how low the party has sunk. Wanna let it call the shot again and again?

  4. Ethics? I am not so sure anyone understands that word anymore or care less.

Power. Now there’s a word they understand . Exclusive is another, branded names like Gucci.

Any words that describe a value system, no way.

  5. And if you do believe in Ethics , then you are alone and will likely be caught by s114A of the Evidence Act and accused of “bringing the country down”, or something wierd like that.

  6. Pak bean,
Well in Singapore, we always say that : you can do anything you want so long you don’t get caught. Well zakaria was caught with his pants down. Too bad!
Of course, he may end up like t t durai.

Married couples everywhere and not just in S’pore would do well to take heed of your advice. You, on the other hand, may want to take it lying down.

  8. I agree with you Mr.Bean, but there are some cases where second chances can not be given. Except for this case. When is the last date for Yale registration by chance?
