Merdeka 2012 Theme Song:  Ciplak or Mere Coincidence?

The “Janji Ditepati” (Promises Fulfilled) melody picked for National Day celebration this year is heating up the airwaves but for the wrong reasons, with some online users noting its striking resemblance to a 2008 gospel song by Jakarta-based Christian band True Worshippers, featuring Indonesian songstress Ruth Sahanaya.

The latest controversy, coming just days after a public furore forced Putrajaya to axe the badly-designed 55th National Day logo in favour of the 1 Malaysia logo, could see more red cheeks for government officials and could further strain diplomatic ties with the Southeast Asian giant.

Malaysia’s chattering class has been critical over the “Janji Ditepati” lyrics, penned by Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim but four days ago, they intensified their attacks on popular video-sharing site YouTube, and other social networking sites like Facebook after a blogger who professed to be a Christian pointed out that the song’s melody was strikingly similar to an Indonesian gospel song titled “Serukan Namanya” (Call out His name).–Debra Chong@www.themalaysiainsider.com

  1. Alamak, Mr. Minister, it is time to own up to the truth. Ciplak or Mere Coincidence? I think, you have to change your mode again. This has diplomatic implications with our neighbour, Indonesia. I suggest you fly to New York and consult our attorney, Mr, Bean in the Bronx.–Din Merican

  2. Aiseh JAWI, JAKIM, JAIS and other JA JA, please investigate Rais Yatim and ban the song. He may have been converted and the song may influence Muslim Malays to convert. Go and raid his house, confiscate his computer, his CD collection and his CD player.
Hassan s/o Ali, what say you. This is bad influence on Malay Muslims, trying to subtly convert them through a christian song sung in Bahasa. Sure senang buat video and also sure can get solar powered CD player, walk man or I-Pod for downloading the song.

  3. If we burn a good bridge we might fall into a river of boiling water. Keep our roads & bridges safe!

  4. Hahahahahaha! Curi lagu gospel pula tu. JAIS apa lagi? Go raid the composers’ houses. Marah lagi lah orang Indonesia.

  5. Mr. Minister, don’t forget to change your mode(to English) before you leave for the Bronx.
the songs do sound similar. there is also the possibility that Rais Yatim changes his mode to christian everytime he steps onto Indonesian soil and sings the gospel with them, how sweet of him. a closet christian, brother!?
if the mini-star had some talent he would have written an authentic malaysian song/melody.
he should quit politics for embarassing us internationally.

  6. Don’t mind our Dato, Randy Rais. You and I had our moments in ’69 at Dunearn Road Hostel, SU sharing the company of beauties like Esther and Maxinne into the late hours. But I never thought your ass kissing days would take on a new life and a new form in your golden years. By the way I’m now in Albany, NY and not NYC, NY. I’m now holed up with Emmie whose watering hole is one of the best in town.

Thanks Bean for the information on your place of residence. My agent Tean Rean who is still mourning the loss of his Tok Guru can put the pieces together and over time, we know who you are. Semper Fi and Orang Malaya will be doing the same.–Din Merican

  7. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha… BIG difference in energy and enthusiasm between the gospel group and Rais Yatim’s feeble attempt at penning an “instant hit.” Still, 300,000 “dislikes” on YouTube ain’t bad… it means a lot of viewers did bother watching the video… and were bothered by it!

  8. SHAME, is one word that does not exist in the dictionary of our malaysian ministers and many of the lawmakers from BN.

Just wonder how much more shameless and digusting act are they going to throw at us, the rakyat.

    Sigh………

  9. “Tean Rean who is still mourning the loss of his Tok Guru … ” — Dato Din Merican

In that case how could he could put the pieces together when he himself is in a million pieces. He has lost his mojo.
    ______________
That will provide him with a challenge and he can focus on a special project…Albany, NY

  10. Steven’s one word ” Shame “, shame on them….playing with flags like small kids ( patriotism is in the heart).

mine one word is pathetic…Not a failed state yet, falling may be, but some of our leaders look pathetic, most resemble the Toyol flur !

To win GE 13, they’ve to change these pathetic faces, they don’t believe rakyat are grumbling, saying : ” Jemu lah tengok muka se-seorang….dah layu….”

  11. I would go as far as to give Rais the maximum benefit of the doubt, and grant him the possibility that the composer did not copy someone else’s work. Even that the song was essentially original.

But that does not mean that I was not totally put off by Rais’ swaggering threat against his accuser – NST had him stating that he “will seek legal redress” if the blogger (who made the accusation) fails to substantiate what he alleged.

What was far more serious was the blatant attempt by Rais to hijack the national Day celebrations to further the political agenda of Najib, UMNO and BN.

Cheap trick which dishonoured the nation’s day of jointly gathering as a united body to remember Merdeka / Malaysia Day.

Cheap tricks actually, counting not only the losuy song, but also the videos, logo and the whole “Janji DiTepati” National Day theme.

Cheap tricks which must have cost the rakyat a huge sum of money.

But I would not want to count on Rais to “change his mode” and at least “own up to the truth”. Such would require some measure of honour and integrity.

Anyway, given the bad pu8blicity, and especially the (alleged) link to a Christian song, I think the ill-conceived Janji DiTepati song will suffer the same ignoble end as its Janji DiTepati logo.

I’d laugh my guts out if only it did not hurt so much.

  12. The first song is praising Jesus. The second one is praising Najib.
    Even Hitler is mad!
Look! Najib is all over the video.
If just the word ‘Allah’ can convert Muslims into Christianity, tell me, how many Muslims will be converted by this Gospel song?
Hasan Ali and Ibrahim Ali will now blame Din for uploading this song in his blog.

  13. If Rais is serious about being a singer, song writer and lyricist, he should join ASCAP and register with BMI. That way he will know if his composition is genuine or a ciplak.
