Najib’s Approval Rating Fall: A Concern for Barisan Nasional

by Nigel Aw (07-27-12)@http://www.malaysiakini.com

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s falling approval rating may spell trouble for the Barisan Nasional (BN), for Najib has spent the past few years trying to rebuild the ruling coalition based on his personal popularity, PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli said today.

“I believe those in the BN are already worried about Najib’s approach, for he is campaigning as if he’s the heartbeat and saviour of BN, but at the same time, he has failed to prop up the other component parties in BN.

“It is not a team effort. Najib believes it is his personal strength that will pull BN up,” Rafizi told a press conference at the PKR headquarters this afternoon.

He noted that Najib’s predecessor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi went into the 2008 general election with a 72 percent approval rating and when BN was much stronger then. However, the ruling coalition lost its two-thirds majority, five states and Kuala Lumpur.

According to pollster Merdeka Centre, which released its latest survey on the prime minister yesterday, Najib’s approval rating has fallen by one percent point since May to 64 percent in June.

Despite Najib’s relatively higher rating, Merdeka Centre said, for the first time in a month more people expressed dissatisfaction with the government, at 44 percent compared with 42 percent among those who were satisfied.

Fall in support shows a ‘disconnect’

Rafizi said the fall in support, particularly among Malay voters showed a “disconnect” between reality and Najib’s Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

azlan“And now, with the government setting ‘Janji Ditepati’ as its Merdeka theme, it’s even more dangerous because people will be even more discerning,” he said.

One example, he said, was the continuous slide in the share price of Felda Global Venture Holdings Bhd (FGV) in the past week – an issue close to the Malay community – despite promises to Felda settlers of good returns when it was first listed.

“With such a slogan, if the share prices fail to meet expectations, people will say, Janji tidak ditepati (Promises not fulfilled),” Rafizi said.

The FGV share was RM4.55 when first listed on Bursa Malaysia, before soaring to RM5.41 on a single day. However, the price has been on a steady decline since and stood at RM5.12 today.

  1. Assallammuallaikum, sad but true, the problem with Najib are as follows:-

    i) inability to differentiate between governance and politics – everything is the same. He indiscriminately uses the Goverment money for his own political agenda.

ii) His inability to take loses in stride – if Allah wills that BN/UMNO loses GE 13, so be it, accept it graciously.

iii) Indiscriminate use of the civil service machinery such as PDRM especially the SB for his own means and purpose. Najib is like another Pharaoh.

The above are my personal opinion only, wallahu a’lam

  2. Janji di tepikan. That’s more accurate.
UMNO might as well Xup-Lup(Canto-speak for tapau; bungkus; throw in the towel).., but they are more than able to to resort to an illegal below the belt blow. That’s why the Opposition ain’t celebrating and should become even more wary. The inability to do so, seems to be the factionalization and confusion, as happens when the pie shrinks.

Now let’s watch what happens in Sabah and the jumping miniature Borneo elephants.

  3. Just look at the lyrics of the song chosen to be official National Day song: “Janji pun sudah ditepati, sekaranglah masanya berbalas budi…”

He might as well ask the lyricist to just put it bluntly so that EVERYONE understands: “Hey dei gua sudah tolong sama lu, sekarang masa lu mesti tolong sama gua!”

The national day song is sheer propaganda and only a cheap and low-classed leader will accept a partisan national day theme song!

National day is about patriotism and love of the motherland – nothing to do with UMNO, BN or Pakatan lah oi Najib! Don’t mess around with such sacred traditions! It should be in the spirirt of “dari Perlis hinggalah ke Sabah, kita sudah Merdeka!”

Lebih baik hang pi Milan beli belah lah pada hari 31 Ogos nanti… gunakan lah Bombardier Global Express atau A319 mana-mana pun suka hati kau aja lah…

  4. What do you expect? The lyrics were penned by the dinosaur Rais Yatim himself; who can be seen waving his hands frantically and heard exclaiming ‘I am a winnable candidate!’.

  5. Let face it folks
We are not worried what the survey says and who says it!
We want them to call the elections and we tell them what we SAY actually!
POLLS are all for the morons to JUST feel good
The idiots are fed by lies & they believe it
The money is made – the con job!
    They can kiss good bye!

  6. It’s time the opposition launch a powerful class action lawsuit against UMNO, BN and the EC for past election frauds and intention to defraud in upcoming GE13. Why are the demands of Bersih and acted on? Why are taxpayers’ money, corruption funds, national resources, infrastructure, media (tv, radio, newspapers), used to bribe, buy or sway votes? Buying defections. Big questions are unanswered. And More! Why are corrupt leaders, cronies not investigated and arrested, eg: CM Taib (31 years) & Musa, Shahrizat, Razak, Dr MM,…too many to mention.

  7. Tun Razak was sighing about how Najib couldn’t….Sanusi Junid asked: “Why Tun?” And Tun Razak replied: “Too much skirt chasing.” Read more: http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/opinion/2011/09/03/najib-is-politically-finished/#ixzz21sUuAaWQ His way of solving problems is by paying his way through with $. Look at his car-salesman face, do you think he look honest? His impeachment is long overdue. A good statesman runs a Country with integrity, wisdom, foresight, calibre and with the public’s best interest at heart.

  8. Your PM calls 1Malaysia when: 1)You practise extreme discrimination & apartheid, eg: when almost 100% of National Oil Petronas’employees are Malays, while other races are 50% of the population (more in Sarawak & Sabah), when President Obama’s black ethnicity comprises only 14% of US population. 2) When Chinese & Indians & Dayaks are the last to get University entry of gov’t jobs. 3). Your PM spent RM200mil on a plane & 3 million on a trip to Dubai, Milan (super luxury goods’ capitals) when many are poor. 4) You tortured Opposition’s Teoh B H to his death on his wedding day over an alleged few thousand RM$, while Scorpene costs in all a few billion RM$ with a large chunk for kickback & subsequent dynamite murder of a Mongolian lover & aide, then your head-culprit goes scot-free into London’s luxury living….the list is endless.

  9. Your PM calls ‘1Malaysia’, when: A) Sabah’s Musa, NFC’s Shahzirat….& Sarawak’s Taib, in power 31 yrs & stole RM billions & one son’s divorce settlement alone is RM400mil….while Sarawak natives lack roads, electricity & drinking water. B) UMNO’s corruption & mismanagement cost the country US $100 billions (not millions) as estimated by foreign analysts. C) They make up stories to blackmail Anwar, the Opposition, the NGOs & Bersih…for decades. D) For 55 years UMNO & BN fooled and fleeced the nation with controlled media, national election resources, gerrymandering, vote buying, rigging & manipulated elections, even using illegal migrants as voters….the list of injustice & crimes is endless. Call for the arrests and trials of UMNO, BN, PBB & MACC leaders now. In the democratic West they won’t last 1 month, let alone 55 years. Anwar, PAS, Nurul, Ambiga, Lim G E etc, will form a clean, democratic, less racist but more progressive economy like Singapore, Korea & Germany.

  10. “Promises fulfilled” ? NZ is ranked among the top in the world for democracy and non-corruption, we see clearly your 55 years of tragedy. UMNO & BN are corrupt, criminal and evil to the bones. A hundred US$ billion, not million, have been stolen, plundered or mismanaged. Massive corruption eg: The CM ruling 31 years in Sarawak. The world is calling for his arrest & PM Najib pretends everything is beautiful, promises fulfilled! Deceit, gerrymandering; State-controlled media; vote buying; phantom voters; postal votes; useless ink, new voters from illegal immigrants, public machinery used to support votes for incumbent government…. using your tax money & money stolen from you to destroy you. Wake up Malaysia!

  11. PM Najib & Home Minister Hishamuddin weren’t even elected. So is the unelected Mayor of KL Fuad. In the KL Fed Territory 11 out of 12 MPs are from Opposition. Yet, the Mayor of KL is appointed by the PM as is the Minister of Fed Territory, Raja Nong Chik, not an elected MP got in through the backdoor ! The 11 elected Opposition MP’s have no say in the administration of KL! A rogue regime! I wonder who gave the order to murder and blow up Altantuya in 2006 with C4 plastic explosives ?

  12. RM200 million for your PM’s new plane. RM3 mil for his & Rosmah’s recent trip but official plane also landed in Milan & Dubai -the capitals of super-luxury goods. Mahathir’s sons are directors of 200 companies and drive some of the most expensive cars in the world eg the Ferrari Enzo & the RM5.5million Bugatti Veyron….Why is Taib still the Sarawak’s CM after 31 years? Controlling 3 prime portfolios: Chief Minister, Finance Minister & Planning and Resources Minister, having his finger in everything in Sarawak. His daughter in law’s divorce claim alone is RM400millionHis cronies Asfia, Masing, Hamed Sepawie, Jabu, Tengah all live in palaces & Mansions; many men in the street can’t even buy a car, let alone a house ! Natives in Sarawak had their land grabbed from them, many don’t even have electricity & good drinking water. Hell is awaiting !
