GE-13: UMNO-BN targets Selangor
by Zulaikha Zulkifli@http://www.malaysiakini.com
KTM Komuter trains and stations are now the latest canvas to market the Najib administration to Selangor commuters.
A survey by Malaysiakini found that train coaches and stations have been used for a “Sayangi Selangor (Love Selangor)” advertising campaign, with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak as the main subject.
The two taglines for the campaign are “We hear your problems on cost of living” and “We hear and understand your needs on education”.
Such message appear all over train coaches, pillars on the platforms and train station escalators.
Najib is depicted with various groups, including children, with an emphasis on him listening to the grassroots.
It is understood that the campaign is currently aimed at the KL Sentral-Port Klang route – which runs mostly through Pakatan Rakyat held areas.
‘Why isn’t Khalid on it?’
It is believed that Najib is the centrepiece of the campaign because there has yet to be a clear BN nominee for the menteri besar position. Najib is the Selangor UMNO chief while Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) chairperson Mohd Zin Mohamed is the state BN coordinator.
Interviews with several commuters show that they were overwhelmingly unfavourable of the campaign.
A public university student who wished to be known only as Mat said that the campaign was “not balanced” because Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim was excluded.
“This is supposed to be a ‘Love Selangor’ campaign. Khalid should be included for fairness. It looks odd that a ‘Love Selangor’ campaign focuses on the Pprime minister,” he said.
Mat, 22, said it was not proper for the federal government to advertise its achievements.
Heard it all before
Another student, Amirul, who studies in a private institution said the campaign was a sign that the general election is near. “If they have been looking after the people’s welfare, why the adverts now? Maybe it is because of the election,” he said.
Meanwhile, Liana, 26, who works in a private firm, said the advertisements were unnecessary since the public is well informed about the government’s efforts.
“There are a lot of advertisements, even on television. I think everyone knows the government has BR1M (Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia), vouchers for students and other things.
“I feel there is no need for such advertisements. What is important is transparency,” she said.
Previously, Malaysiakini reported that BN flags had been put up all over several Selangor Komuter stations along the Kuala Lumpur-Port Klang route. Mohd Zin had at the time denied issuing any instructions for the flags to be raised.
There is such a thing as overkill. Its bad enough we have to see Najib’s face in newspapers, TV news. Now we have to endure it on our joyless commutes to work. Well kudos to the ad agency that got this lucrative contract from Najib, who is not even standing for elections in Selangor. I remember seeing leaders’ pictures on huge billboards everywhere during my travels to Egypt and Libya before the Arab Spring. We all know what happened to them.
Even cheating won’t help UMNO Barisan in Selangor. Only the use of plenty of bomohs , will they be able to wrest Selangor from Pakatan.
Reminds me of a country located in NE Asia
I think this advertising campaign has backfired.
The style may have worked to some extent in rural areas, where many are pre-disposed to be supportive of the Ruling party.
Such advertising in city areas, with lots of people struggling to make ends meet – long after the BR1M has already been spent – just breeds more cynicism.
Is KTM Komuter paid for the advert space (like SP Setia paying RM1.2 million per month to Firefly) or BN pakai uang rakyat untuk berkempen lagi?
Greenbug,
It’s time to do this to BN
Najib is taking your hard eanred ringgit and use it to promote himself. That’s what it is all about. You guys gotta be dumb not to realize that.
Too late too little
Folks its the last turn to the finishing line
Watson Nyambek
Flies home
Flying Dayak
For 55 years
The good done was destroyed by many greedy hands
Nothing More Than That
Nah, we’re not that dumb, besides I’m in the advertising business. Hope to get paid before they go under. Now, if i can use less paint and crimp the poster size.. Besides, why aren’t the EC fellas hounding my workers?
Truly, Jibs does look well-worn, anemic and desperate. Perhaps he’s shitting bricks and suffering from blood loss from hemorrhoids.
Nowadays the ‘Dacing’ somehow looks more or less like a Swastika. Just put up the UMNO flag, and dispense with the pretense, okay?
Selangorians are not NGOK!
Only UMNO is NGOK!
Waste the monies
The great grandfathers left behind
Hell waits for these kind
what do you expect from an UMNO sycophant. paid by taxpayers to do political work for UMNO. Truly 1Abuse
Wait till the alongs get a sniff of this space,Pinjam RM10K dapat Rm10K,
heee3, right on Najib’s face, or maybe Pangkah Lembu dapat Sharizat, alamak, kalu pangkah Sharizat dapat apa yaa????
Reminds me also of “Uncle” Ho Chi Minh and his alleged fondness for the children of North Vietnam
It’s time the opposition launch a powerful class action lawsuit against UMNO, BN and the EC for past election frauds and intention to defraud in upco, img GE13. Why are the demands of Bersih and acted on? Why are taxpayers’ money, corruption funds, national resources, infrastructure, media (tv, radio, newspapers), used to bribe, buy or sway votes? Big questions are unanswered. And More! Why are corrupt leaders, cronies not investigated and arrested, eg: CM Taib & Musa, Shahrizat, Razak, Dr MM,……..endless string of them.
Barisan’s collapse has started in a vicious spiral. Make sure you give Opposition 90% of the vote, the cronies will cling to 10%, then BN trim your 90% to 70% through: Gerrymandering. Frauds in electoral roll with aliens, duplicates & phantoms. Buying & bribing…all using your money!. Biased EC Chiefs from UMNO. Unfair monopoly of media, heli, vehicles, boats, venues & resources. All using your money to destroy you!
We see so clearly from a true democracy overseas: BN / UMNO are using your money to destroy you longer and further after all these 55 yrs. Using tax-payers money to bribe & buy votes. Using Gov’t radio, TV, papers, resources, infrastructure, equipments, vehicles…not giving Opposition a level-playing filed. Instead sabotaging Opposition, and citing communism, terrorists and all kinds of outlandish ideas. Why are you relenting & forgiving these crooks & criminals. All right-thinking Rakyat must support Bersih’s 8 electoral reforms for Free, Fair and Clean GE. An UMNO-led Gov’t is NOT a democratically-elected but winning through massive Fraud & Corruption. He called it ‘Promises fulfilled’!
How long would Mahathir, Najib, all the BN/UMNO/PBB cronies, MACC, Police chiefs last in a democratic country like NZ, UK or Canada? 1 month? In a neutral position, we see clearly your 55 years of tragedy. UMNO & BN are corrupt, criminal and evil to the bones. A hundred US$ billion, not million, have been stolen, plundered or mismanaged. Massive corruption eg: The CM ruling 31 years in Sarawak. The world is calling for his arrest & PM Najib pretends everything is beautiful, saying: Promises fulfilled!
