The Making of a Great Cover-Up

The probe into the April 28 rally is turning out to be a sham. The panel chairman (left) tasked with finding the truth about the events that led to the outbreak of violence on that dark day (April 28, 2012) made a preposterous statement when he said the Police were ordered not to come into physical contact with the protesters to avoid spilling blood.

The Chairman must have been wearing blinkers on the day when thousands converged on the barricades of freedom square (Dataran Merdeka). It was not a pretty sight when the clashes eventually broke out.

When the trouble erupted, the chief investigator was probably in his Genting redoubt and did not see what happened on the ground. Or maybe he saw on the idiot box the government version where  the poor victims were his men in blue. The reality was different. Did the Police hold back for fear of coming into contact with human flesh? No, sir! Switch off the propaganda stuff and watch the citizens’ videos to get the truth.

When the storm broke loose, all those men in uniform were transformed into ferocious animals who lost all restraint and attacked the defenceless people in a paroxysm of rage. The contact was more than physical: it was a brutal crushing of bodies. The arms and legs of the police were their batons: they used them to beat, stomp, trample, slap, punch, kick while at the same time unleashing salvos after salvos of tear gas directly into the trapped crowd.

In scenes after scenes, the guardians of law and order became the perpetrators of violence. There are photos of Federal Reserve Unit clutching batons, contrary to what the chief investigator claimed.

He said the FRU contingent was not equipped with batons, which is a bared-faced lie. All the uniformed personnel were out in full force eager to do battle with citizens armed only with mineral water bottles and salt.

Nasty cuts

The Police were not peaceful bystanders on the day they received their orders to confront the protesters. The rally was treated as an act of war and all the citizens on the streets as enemies of the state.

The mission of the men in riot gear was clear: crush the rally with all the power at their disposal.

Hostility had commenced the moment “war grade” barbed wires were rolled out, turning freedom square into a war zone.

Suhakam in a parallel investigation of the rally found that the type of barbed wires used were meant for times of war to repel invaders. That explained the nasty cuts suffered by many who fell on the spiky wires.Yet the former top gun in the Police Force was satisfied with the explanation of his boys.

Dressed like a tourist (right), he visited the site of the war zone but only to listen to the police give their version of the battle at that iconic site. He should have lent his ears to the many victims of Police brutality to get a truer picture. Or just check the countless videos and pictures which captured the extent of the violence committed by the law enforcers.

The toothless panel will soon draw its own “fair” conclusion after listening to the testimonies of a few witnesses. It will be an exercise in futility because the findings will carry little or no weight with the public who know better than to trust a government-appointed panel.

The great cover-up began the very moment the former top Police Chief was picked to lead the probe. The five “wise” men can only come up with a sanitised story that will make the Police smell like roses. They must exonerate the government and heap all blame on the organisers.

It is left to Suhakam to come up with a credible report and rebuild the bridge of trust with the people. Though Suhakam too has lost many teeth, it must at least roar its displeasure if it detected any elements of criminal behaviour on the part of the Police.

It must interview as many witnesses as possible to get a comprehensive and detailed account of the events that led to the harsh crackdown on the rally-goers on April 28.

It is not necessary for Suhakam to inspect the site of the upheaval because the empty space will not yield the truth. It is the victims who have borne the brunt of the violence who can better recount the day of infamy when the Police went berserk and clobber the marchers for clean and fair elections.

  1. Tun Haniff is not credible to sit as Chair of this panel when he likened the Bersih 3.0 to communists… what is there to debate about? Malaysians are not stupid anymore – perhap some atill are – and many have become smarter and won’t trust the present government anymore.

This exercise to whitewash the police brutality on April 28th will only make the present government’s credibility suffer another blow!

Why can’t this people be honest and say, “Yes, we had a problem, let us discuss and see what we can do to avoid this in the future?” Why must they always spin, twist and turn and tell lies and do cover ups?

    Is this our culture, Najib?

  2. And if I may add, Dato Din, there are so many photos of the Police beating up people at Bersih 3.0! In Korea, Japan or Taiwan or even in US, UK or Australia… and recently in India… just one single photo would have caused the voluntary resignation of the Home Minister or Police Chief.nBut in Malaysia, Polis Raja Di Malaysia!
    ______________
No resignation here in Malaysia. They all cling to their jobs for power and privilege.–Din Merican

  3. Haniff should not have accepted the appointment after making the statement about Bersih 3.0 and Communist caper. After all his allowance from Gentings is more than he’ll ever need on top of his pension.

  4. The day will soon come as it did in NYC some years back when Policemen would take innocent victims into toilets at Police stations and squeezed their testicles and sodomized them with plungers. Over here, the Police Officer responsible for that received a 30-year sentence without parole and is now serving time and due to be released only 2025.

Over here we have the Rule of Law. In Malaysia, we have Hanif Omar.

  5. The Police in Malaysia are more sadistic. They make male suspects masturbate using toothpaste and can make you a morphine addict overnight. And still none was punished. Hanif is their Godfaher.

  6. Today, BN’s credibility is at ground zero. Even if it says the sky is blue, the people will not believe it.
The people look at PDRM as animals in human form. If only the man in blue realize how lowly the people view them.

  7. “The panel chairman (left) tasked with finding the truth about the events that led to the outbreak of violence on that dark day (April 28, 2012) made a preposterous statement when he said the Police were ordered not to come into physical contact with the protesters to avoid spilling blood.”

That depends who he was with sharing his thoughts on the issue. It depends who among the top brass you’re talking to. I believe the orchestra had more than one conductor. At best his statement is a half-truth. This is one instance when two halves don’t make a whole.

  8. Hanif is right when he says the police were ordered not to come into physical contact. The use of self defense will only work when you are threated with serious bodily harm. The onus then is not on the other party said to threaten him with serious bodily harm to prove he was not but on the party who alleges threat of physical harm.

Why do you think Hanif Omar got only a third class degree in Law and was not allowed to sit for his London Bar Finals??

  9. Again….what is this something ” nice ” i hear that he was conffered & received his Scroll at the Buckingham Palace, when he was literally relaxing in his lush country-side homein Buckinghansire without so much as attending Lectures and passing Exams with flying colours….?

Wondering why Her Majesty the Queen allowed departure from ordinary proceedure….no i mean from ” protocol ” in the way of conferment of U-degree ?

  10. Hanif married the right/lucky connection, how else to become youngest n longest IGP,n still manage to Fork it up,bigtime, may your rezki from Genting bless you n your kin.Amin

  11. Wonderful goods from you, man. I’ve understand your stuff previous to and you’re just extremely magnificent.
I actually like what you’ve acquired here, really like what you are stating and the way in which you say it. You make it entertaining and you still care for to keep it wise. I can not wait to read far more from you. This is actually a terrific web site.

  12. Something that many people dont know. To get the best insurance quote
is to tell the insurance company when looking for a deal if they’ll increase the amount that you pay out of your own pocket in an accident, known as the excess. should you opt for this you will have to pay a signifiant amout if you are unlucky enough to have cause an accident but it is definitely a good move for careful drivrs.
