BERSIH 3.0: An Independent Probe would satisfy Young Voters

 (05-04-12) @http://www.thestar.com.my

An independent probe into the incidents of assault at the BERSIH 3.0 rally would satisfy young voters who feel their protest for a fraud-free elections had been hijacked by professional politicians who have a different agenda.

THE Home Affairs Ministry decision on Wednesday to probe into incidents of assault at the BERSIH 3.0 rally on April 28 is right and appropriate as it would help to ease the anger and disgust among protesters, many of whom were first timers.

Policemen had allegedly assaulted over a dozen newsmen and press photographers while over a dozen cops also landed in hospital after suffering attacks and assaults by protesters who breached the barricade around Dataran Merdeka.

All these actions by different groups against each other and against public property need to be probed by an independent inquiry. At the same time, the Police need to take action against their men who were involved in the alleged assaults of media personnel and protesters.

Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar have both promised a thorough investigation without any cover-ups.

“We want transparency. We want justice and everything will be done in accordance with the rule of law,” Hishammuddin said. In addition, Ismail took time off to mend fences with the media.

He apologised to Malay Mail cameraman Arif Kartono, telling him that in the chaos that followed the breach of the barricades, the Police could not differentiate between demonstrators and the media.

To be fair to the Police, in today’s world of digital cameras and instant posting on Facebook and Internet, the lines between press people and protesters have blurred to the extent news organisations covering mass protest events have to rethink on sending out their people.

They (the media reps) should be clearly dressed and marked out as press people to distinguish them from protesters, many of whom also wear media paraphernalia and carry sophisticated cameras and video equipment.

The term journalist-on-the-job is loosening up and should now include bloggers, freelancers and others accredited with political parties and NGOs. But for the many first timers at the rally, an independent probe is welcome because they had gone for a sit-in protest, not to be fired at with tear gas and chemical-laced water.

It was not an illegal assembly as it was allowed under the newly-passed Peaceful Assembly Bill and had the support of all political factions. The Government, which did not see it as a security threat, had offered the organisers three stadiums for their gathering.

But BERSIH3.0 chairman Datuk S. Ambiga wanted the crowd to be as near as possible to Dataran Merdeka and the young people heeded her call. Some gave stems of flowers to the FRU personnel.

The camaraderie, however, did not last long. A section of the crowd, instead of dispersing as Ambiga had requested, proceeded to remove the barricades and push into Dataran Merdeka.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was seen making a hand gesture to Deputy PKR President Azmin Ali, who then allegedly signaled to another man to remove the barriers. Chaos followed and the Police reacted with water cannons.

The hardened political elements, who are either trained in crowd psychology or aware of tipping-point events, had hijacked a protest that the people thought was their own.

The independent panel which the Police have promised comes at a crucial time with World Press Freedom Day yesterday but the question that has surfaced is, who will be on the panel? And, how independent will it be?

Only a truly independent and professional probe would satisfy the young people, who feel their protest was for a legitimate cause fraud-free elections. But this had been hijacked by professional politicians who have a different agenda a sustained Middle East-style mass action that has not been seen since the reformasi protest that broke out in 1998 following Anwar’s arrest and detention under the former Internal Security Act.

The Police have arrested one man a PKR state leader and more arrests are expected as they gather evidence from numerous video clips. The clips show people throwing things at each other, at Police cars, smashing, kicking and attacking fallen Policemen, smashing windscreens and jumping on top of vehicles.

A truly independent investigation by an unbiased panel must be acceptable to the general public, especially to the young Malaysians who had faced their baptism of fire.

  1. Investigate what and what will the powers that be do with the findings? Nothing will change as shown by all those RCI and finding of previous panels. Setting up the panel to investigate Bersih ebent is just waste of time. Panel should be set up to investigate the underlying cause why Bersih took place . Najib knows the grouse the rakyat is screaming about and it is inaction that is the problem.

  2. our najib will never or want to know about the grousing rakyat…all he wants now is to blames on BERSIH organisers and he very keen on DSAI;;;;; just for personal quenches. Najib is too ego and kept on saying he always upkeeping the welfares of the rakyats….only the minority dont know how to appreciates …lu tolong wau….wau mesti kasi…..

  3. It comes as no surprise to anyone here that they are pretending to treat the sympton, ignoring the disease.

  4. “The Police have arrested one man a PKR state leader and more arrests are expected as they gather evidence from numerous video clips. All those who are in fear of political persecution, you’d do well to seek the safety of the U.S. Embassy and file your papers for political asylum.

  5. Hmm.., the only ‘probe’ needed is an anal one on constipated HM, whose chief mutt let loose his junior mutts to beat up, torture and intimidate the naive youth – who in no way were disappointed with the Politicians who showed up during the rally. UMNO just can’t get it through their numskulls that the general rakyat really hate them – viscerally. So much so that they didn’t even need CS gas to make them tear.

If Lembek had showed up in the rally and given a few words of ‘wisdom’ – it would have certainly sparked off riotous laughter. Since he didn’t, he’s trying his level best to upstage Bersih 3.0, by bring having a sycophantic, managed one in Bukit Jalil soon. I wonder how much they pay those decorticate UMNO folk to attend? Good luck, but keep it simple, stupid.

What did i say about reactionary politicking? No class la.., like a copycat, faked orgasm.

Btw, Amal flurs will also be there, in mufti.

  6. Alternatively, you could apply for a tourist visa through a travel agency, have US$1k in travellers checks and take that first flight out via S’pore to San Francisco where arrangments can be made for U.S. Marine Sgt.(retired) Semper fi to meet you. I will fly over to meet you and file papers for political asylum.

You will get your Green Card in a year compared to 10 to 12 years and a piece of the American Dream.

  7. Let’s plan for Bersih 4.0. The most appropriate place for this gathering is still the Dataran Merdeka. Dataran Merdeka was the place where independence was declared. At that time it was the British who were the colonists. After the British was kicked out, a worst form of colonists developed. This body of colonists killed its parent, the old UMNO whose foundation was made up of ordinary Malays, led mostly by teachers. The UMNO Baru, led by a fake “Malay” from the Kerala Mamak stock, hijacked and appropriated the name of the old movement and transformed it into a party of rent seekers, whose only aim was to siphon the wealth of the nation. In the process of raping the country dry, the UMNOputra destroyed the hallowed institutions of the land and use them against the people. The UMNOputras hoped to use the Malays against the other races but this has backfired on them badly. Since when the Mamak devil was tricked by a sleeping beauty, he made sure that the “1 Billion dollar” mastermind of the Scopene deal, who succeeded the sleeping beauty, is kept tightly in check.

Bersih 4.0 must realize that reforms do not drop out of the sky and delivered on a silver platter by a recalcitrant government. Let’s carry out a civil disobedience movement and stop obeying bad laws. If the civil disobedience movement of Mahatma Gandhi was able to confound the greatest empire of its time, and if the contemporary Arab Spring movements can topple the dictatorial regimes of Egypt, Algeria, Libya and soon-to-be, Syria, this is a good omen for the long-suffering Malaysians to realize their goal. No evil regime can withstand the will of the people. Hidup Bersih!

  8. This is your chance folks! To sing to “America the Beautiful” – rather than to have to sing a song about “lelaki tak boleh di percayai, berani sumpah takut mati” !

  9. Or take a leaky boat to Indonesia and onwards to Australia and seek asylum under special huminatrian claim for protection against racism, discrimination, denial of civil liberties, etc etc .

  10. Baradan is a joke, so don’t bother with what he writes. He, like Wong Chun Wai, sold his soul to Barisan Nasional regime and will write anything to please his masters.

  11. Yes…Bershit3 ‘criminals’ aren’t wanted in this country…get tthe hell out if you wish…nobody stopping you, as the malay proverb says: “saperti melukut ditepi gantang”…their presence thus far a nuisance…!! It’s none of their business to be in this peaceful country…formely known as Persekutuan Tanah Melayu or Federation of Malaya…( as a reminder for those who need a lesson in history!!…)

  12. Persekutuan Tanah Melayu? Common Rocky go and have another encounter with history. Only , this time , get the facts right..unless of course you are arrogantly too boisteous or suffers some disordely syndrome after years of distorted history lessons (this is why most malayans still think malaysia day falls on the 31st of august) coupled with naivety to unashamedly gesture that the make-up of modern malaysia is exclusively a sole combination of 11 PTM states and its relatively feudalistic offerings. PTM seized to exist 63′ onwards , remember?

  13. “Or take a leaky boat to Indonesia and onwards to Australia and seek asylum under special huminatrian claim for protection against racism, discrimination, denial of civil liberties, etc etc

There are no U.N. laws that could be adopted into the domestic law of any country that would allow you to seek asylum for racial discrimination, racism or denial of civil liberties. Sorry.

  14. All who attended the Bersih 3.0 , did so because we thought it was important for all of us to stand up and make a statement against Kutty , against Kutty’s corruption, UMNO’s corruption, MCA’s corruption , corruption per se, the lies UMNO Barisan has been spinning for the last 30 years , the divide and rule policy of UMNO Barisan, the blatant cheating by UMNO Barisan , the racism as practiced by UMNO Barisan etc.

And this statement, all Malaysians made by turning up at the Bersih 3.0. Those who did not or could not , did so in their hearts. So Bersih and Datuk Ambiga represent the position of all Malaysians.

So instead of calling for an independent panel to examine police brutality, which we all know ( independent or not ) WILL AMOUNT TO NOTHING and will be a waste of time and public funds , why not just call for GE 13!

This should give the ra’ayat the opportunity they have been waiting for which is to wipe out UMNO Barisan and its feudal lords , once and for all.

  15. aiya, makcik. you got your logic mixed-up lah.

How can the female participants in Bersih be ‘anak jantan’? The Almighty created them to be ‘anak betina’. Did you not learn about the difference between ‘jantan’ and ‘betina’ in school?

We all know Najib always uses the other head so he does not know the difference between ‘jantan’ and ‘betina’. That’s why he and Rosmah have a reverse role.

And I see that you have been happily lapping up all the sewage that pours out of Najib’s mouth. At GE13, there won’t be any ‘peti undi’. Najib will organise lots of ‘peti’ with false voting slips. These are not ‘peti undi’, just ‘peti with scraps of paper’. The Malaysian law has recently been changed to allow these scraps of paper to be called “undi”. Did you not read that, makcik?

  16. “So instead of calling for an independent panel to examine police brutality, which we all know ( independent or not ) WILL AMOUNT TO NOTHING and will be a waste of time and public funds , why not just call for GE 13!”

Taxpayer dollars spent on a witch hunt. Really? Don’t you guys see that they are conditioning you to accept the inevitable come general elections? The inevitability of a BN victory.

  17. YB Menteri,

With all due respect, independence alone will be insufficient. The Probe must be free and fair run by impartial and independent members.

    Thank you.

  18. Adam Abdullah , heard of the Malay proverb ‘sedaikan payung sebelum hujan’? Although ,in this case ‘ hujan’ is not the normal down pour from the skies , courtesy of the man upstairs but sprinkled , and quite lavishly too out from hoses of mobile reservoirs courtesy of the supreme being they now call the ‘Billion Dollar Man’ Pity , no one informed Teoh Beng Hock or Ahmad Sarbani to bring along ‘payung terjun’ when summoned by SPRM ( someone should had) . See what transpired.. So pick your choice . You can either choose to utter Allahhuakhbar or Dollarhuakhbar..

  19. C’mon dont twist it Adam. They knew those who govern were against them so they came prepared. Stop it.

  20. We dotn need any premonotion Adam. It si OBVIOUS you and those who govern are against Bershih. We can read you comments and theirs. No majic at all…err its obvious.

  21. well rocky if they were really exploited then thats wrong. It was a call for clean elections . And rocky they did behave . Alot of them did. Whats needed is to verify that something went wrong and the reasons why and how did that happen. I am all for truth. ( I’ll excuse your language for now)

  22. rocky….you can have your Persekutuan Tanah Melayu back when SABAH and SARAWAK walks out of the lopsided Federation under UMNO/BN !! Will happen sooner than you think the way the country is going with UMNO bent on clinging to power by fair or fowl means !!

  23. Hmmm .. when these UMNO Barisan scumbags get desperate , they sure can come up with some strange brew to influence and scare the kampung folk. Here is 3 of their scare tactics :

    1. using Azmin’s aged mother to ” reclaim ” her prodigal son ” via national telivision. Hmmm … the shame of it all . We all know the daughter is paid . Wonder how much the mother is paid ! ( read about this in Malaysiakini today ).

    2. using the names of 3 IGP’s to confirm the claim that this was an attempt to topple the Government . Two of the ex IGP’s , namely Musa hassan and Rahim Noor are individuals of ill repute . We all know that . But Haniff Omar seems to have thrown in his hat too . Wonder if he is admitting that he belongs to the ” ill repute ” category too ! ( also in Malaysiakini today ).

    3. using the small businessmen in the KL centre area to claim loss of business. I was there at the BERSIH rally on 28th April 2012. The stall operators were have a roaring business day from 6.30am in the morning and it got better as the day got hotter. If there was any loss , it was only after the Police let fly the tear gas cannisters and the chaos that followed.

I guess desperate times demands desperate steps be taken… :).

    Rosita,

Desperate times require desperate measures, this being Malaysian politics of the 21st century. Road to paradigmatic change is a long and winding one.The question is do we have the nerves and the stamina to go on the reformist path.–Din Merican

  24. My friend Haniff has thrown his hat in? But he threw in his towel years ago. When did he go into the hat business? Maybe a case of Alzheimers??.

  25. Yes, rosita – when the going gets tough, the toughs get going. Besides the usual slew of Malay pantuns we can use, there is an old English saying that they are behaving like “hens with addled eggs”.

In this day and age, that although Man hasn’t changed – the Message as the Media (Marshal McLuhan), has changed. The huge number of uploaded video evidence puts paid to their slew of slants. That’s ‘cuz they’re are stuck in propaganda befitting horse cavalry charges and keris antics. There is a deliberate and concerted attempt to appropriation blame at their Opposition, whether in civil society or politically – after the fact that they conspired and colluded to do Evil. Certainly not Salt of the Earth sort of chaps, we have as Leaders.

Apologists for UMNO are what we call “Lembek” upstairs ‘cuz their Leaders are Lembek elsewhere.

  26. “Third why was the necessity to send messages to all to bring salt, wet towel to attend the demonstration. Is that an indication that whoever gave instruction had an intention or premonition that something bad is expected to be done or to happen” Adam

This is like asking Najib’s favorite masseuse Ah Sam why she brought along Johnson’s Baby Lotion along.

  27. ” This is like asking Najib’s favorite masseuse Ah Sam why she brought along Johnson’s Baby Lotion “.

Hahahah … this is a good one Bean.

  28. Imagine, the government that is sitting at the throne in Putrajaya had won with the likes of Umi, Nalla, Zul Nordin, Ib Ali, Zahrain, Hassan Ali, Ezam Nor, Wee Chee Keong, Tiong Kee Seng, et all, and they are using the same “dream team” all over again? What does that make of us ordinary voters/ citizens?

  29. Azmin should have given his mother and sis some broadband anti-biotics(money) against the BN-virus.

they(present regime) feel safe in their saddle thats why no amount of evidence in the web can worry them. their arrogance is telling.
Najib has the indian votes. now, everything depends on the chinese and the malay middle class voting behaviour!
can we expect some surprise tactics from PR? if they have, it would be wise for them to wait till the election date is announce.

for the people who are worried about Anwar, Azmin and the lot: the main objective for us now, is to unseat BN. worrying about the sexual and religious orientation and what not of Anwar and Co., would only obliterate the bigger picture. thats hair splitting and thats what they want us to do. it does’nt matter who brings us the freedom from umno-bn devils.
if we can remove UMNO-BN we can also remove PR, that is no monumental task as it is now.
the way to putra jaya is going to be one big hell of a fight, if we want to go through Hell we should’nt fear the Devil.

  30. Probe what and who to do the shit job? The accuser home minister to probe his prejudged allegation against the organizer? The stakeholder double up as umpire? This is the type of reformation jibby brought to Malaysia?
