Himpunan Sejuta Umat: A Great Success (?) despite low turnout
by Malaysiakini
The organisers of the anti-apostasy rally Himpunan Sejuta Umat (Congregation of a Million) in Shah Alam today declared the event a success despite only attracting no more than 5,000 people. According to its co-chairperson Mohd Azmi Mohd Hamid(left), this is because the message of the rally has been delivered.
Speaking after the four-hour event at the Shah Alam open stadium, he said that the delivery of their message trumps “the real numbers on the ground.”
“We are not disappointed. When we say one million (people), we say this as the NGOs had promised certain numbers of supporters, but if they can’t make it then we are not too concerned about it,” he said.
According to Mohd Azmi, the fact that no untoward incident occurred also disproved the
fear-mongering by Himpun’s detractors. “We succeeded with a peaceful and disciplined gathering,” he said of the gathering that had earlier claimed received the support of 3,000 Muslim NGOs.
‘Apostasy stops here’
Earlier, the organisers confiscated an unauthorised booklet distributed at the rally, on alleged proselytisation by NGO Harapan Komuniti, that was hosting a thanksgiving dinner at the Damansara Utama Methodist Church on the night of the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) raid on Aug 3.
“That was not from us,” Mohd Azmi said of the booklet . Mohd Azmi said Himpun’s message, through its 10 resolutions, will be brought on a nationwide roadshow and forwarded to the Agong, Malay rulers, menteris besar, and federal and state governments.
“We want to say that this apostasy phenomenon stops here. It won’t be like drugs or the ‘rempit’ culture that has become widespread,” he said.
He added that Himpun’s resolution also show that what Muslims want is for their legal rights to
be protected, “without animosity towards non-Muslims”.
The much anticipated event was also attended by some non-Muslims, mostly media personnel, whom the announcer addressed several times, assuring them that Muslims are not out to deny them their right based on the federal constitution.
Commenting on the frequent reference to Christian missions during the string of speeches by NGO leaders today that some saw demonising Christians, Mohd Azmi said scholarly research proved that the evangelist movement had reached Malaysia.
“This statement has basis… it is a well-known fact that people see Islam as a target,” he said, earlier referring to Iain Buchanan’s book on the evangelist movement ‘Armies of God’.
Mohd Azmi, however, conceded that the fact that such movements exist in Malaysia proves poor enforcement of existing laws that prohibit proselytisation to Muslims.
“We feel that there is no serious enforcement. We have dealt with a state where evidence that one church clearly showed that it had proselytised to an individual, but no action was taken,” he said, refusing however to name the church or the state involved.
Religious agencies culpable
He added that religious agencies like the zakat foundation are also partly to blame as their weaknesses in assisting the needy has opened the door for the evangelists.
“But what we’re asking is, why (do the evangelists) take advantage of these poor people?” he said, urging Islamic agencies to do more to help the needy.
On the appearance of PAS-Gombak Setia assemblyperson and Selangor exco for Islamic affairs Hasan Ali (left) today, Mohd Azmi said the politician’s involvement is “innocent” as he did so in his individual capacity.
“I don’t think he breached party discipline,” he said, referring to PAS’ stand to stay away from the event.
Besides Hasan, who ended the event by leading a prayer, the other Pakatan Rakyat leader who attended the event was Federal Territories PAS Youth secretary Kamaruzzaman Mohamad, who spoke as a representative of the NGO Anti-Apostasy Front.
Independent MP Ibrahim Ali, who arrived with much fanfare, came as NGO Perkasa president, but did not speak at the rally.
Himpun’s 10 resolutions
1) For all Malaysians to respect the Malay rulers as protectors of Islam.
2) For federal and state governments to enforce exisiting laws and to protect Muslim sensitivities.
3) For the enactment of anti-apostasy and anti-proselytisation acts.
4) For a revision of the education system in order for the system to be rooted on Islamic teachings.
5) For any laws that will replace the Internal Security Act to include the protection of the sanctity of Islam according to the Federal Constitution.
6) For government to conduct information sessions to enlighten all sectors of society on the position of Islam in the country.
7) For all organisations, including political ones, to prioritise Islam over other interests.
8 ) For all institutions, especially parents, to strengthen the faiths of children and youth by preventing their involvement in activities that could undermine the faith.
9) For the government to ensure media reports responsibly to protect national harmony and Muslim sensitivities in accordance with the law.
10) For Muslims to unite to defend the faith, despite differences in political ideologies.
This Himpunan is a colossal failure, not a success. Less than 1% of a million Umat turned up. It is a clear indication that Malaysian Muslims know that Islam is not under threat and that the organisers are playing politics. What an embarrassment to UMNO.
Observer - October 22, 2011 at 9:39 pm
What a joke! Failure indeed. The Malays know that today’s Himpunan is a waste of time.

Oh Wow 5,000 in attendance. Let me see 5,000 over one million ummm that’s half a percent. Very impressive but I guess more than half of those in attendance are look see look see.
It’s better if the organizers of Himpun do more outreach programs to the poor Muslims like Feeding the poor, provide free medical care, build houses for the homeless, establish free schools, free hospitals, homes for the elderly and visitations in hospitals for the sick and elderly. That is the way to the Ummah’s heart and also to demonstrate to the non Muslims the caring side of Islam.
Over here we have programs run by charities that undertake Feed the Homeless (www.iitusa.org) Free Medical clinic (www.ummahclinic.org) Free homes (www.habitat.org) and many more. Then there’s Abdul Sattar Edhi of Pakistan running one of the largest charity that caters to the poor. In the Middle East we have Education for Employment Foundation (efefoundation.org) that seeks to create employment for the youth.
No point gathering and blowing a lot of hot air, cakap berdebar debar tapi semua kosong, balek rumah tengok Astro nothing changes. The Malay Muslims are being taught to fear the Christians, the cross, Santa Claus, Christmas trees and now the free soup kitchen. Why don’t the organizers start their own soup kitchen and give out Quran at the same time.
semper fi - October 22, 2011 at 11:18 pm
“Why don’t the organizers start their own soup kitchen and give out Quran at the same time.” semper
Can’t buddy, not original nor branded. All the soup kitchens are run by the dastardly Christians and others who have nothing better to do with their lives. They even serve vegetarian fare, in case there is a problem with halal certification.

Five decades ago, Malays number slightly less than 50% of the total population and there is real fear among conservative Malays that unless protected the Malay way of life, their religion and customs will somehow over time morph into something different and undesirable. The Malays will lose their identity. Modernization is looked at as being synonymous to westernization. The effects were already visible in the urban areas. The Malays were mostly rural folks. To stem the tide and allay the fears of the Malays, the Federal Constitution of 1957 incorporated provisions that would safeguard the constitutional position of Islam.
Article 11 was crafted to do just that with sub-clause (4) prohibiting the proselytization of Muslims and protecting the constitutional status of Islam among the Malays. Article 160(2) an insignificant part of the Federal Constitution dealing with ‘Interpretations” has been used to enslave the Malays who are legally deemed as Muslims. The act of proselytizing has been criminalized by the state enactments though the act itself has never been defined by our courts (read today as being syariah courts since syariah courts have been given exclusive jurisdiction over all matters concerning Islam). A non-Malay and non-Muslim caught proselytizing a Muslim could be jailed for up to 3 years and/or fined.
Demographics has changed since. Malays today number no less than 60% of the total population. Islam the religion has spread to all spheres of public life with UMNO leaders wearing their religion on their sleeves. Islam has found its way to our living rooms. Even the bedroom is not spared. UMNO and PAS have upped the ante. So where is the threat to the status of Islam??
Mr Bean - October 23, 2011 at 12:00 am
Look at all the mosques dotting the country’s landscape. Tell me if Islam is under threat. It is spreading like wildfire winning conversions among non-Malays and non-Muslims.

Speaking of the malay way of life. What is it anyway? define it to us pls. mmm, goingto the mosque? Is that malay? Ohhh wearing samping for Raya. Calling Raya , Raya instead of Eid. Ok, may be. mmmmm Kelantan has abolished all malay way of life in the name of SIN and Allah. So thats one state that doesnt want the malay way of life. All the KL malays are yuppy to the hilt and speaks english more than the english with their American accent. Drive foreign cars becasue to them that denotes “success” , holidays in UK whenever they can. So can someone pls tell me what the malay way of life in this century is? The kampung is the malay way of life.? Oh here I thought the kampung people were poor. What a gimmick.

4) For a revision of the education system in order for the system to be rooted on Islamic teachings.
THIS IS BAD… VERY BAD.
NO WAY I WILL SEND MY GRAND KIDS TO ANY SCHOOL THAT IS REQUIRED TO FULFILL THIS STUPID LEGISLATION.
THIS IS THE PROBLEM when votes allow IDIOTS IN PAS and the holier than thou pariah Malays to use RELIGION to force down the throats of others.
One reason WHY PAS should not have the keys to Putrajaya is because PAS will spend more time entrenching Islam instead of spending time looking after the ECONOMY.
PAS is NO better and if fact worse than UMNO when it comes to religious issues and looking after economy.
Meanwhile Najib’s silence is so loud…. not only spineless and ball-less on these issues…
NAJIB is an IRRESPONSIBLE leader…
MALAYSIA is going down the toilet at this rate… mark my words

— human beings came from Adam and Eve,
— Up in the galaxy is a heaven with 72 virgins
— all the animals were saved by Noah on a wooden boat because all te lands on the planet were flooded
—- Jewish rabbis such as Jesus went up into the sky on a contaminated water vapor we call CLOUD
— DINOSAURS never existed….
—- BIg Bang??? What Big Bang
— Science replace with Study of the Quran
— non Muslims are kafirs
— school uniform: kopiahs and tudungs

…. and they are a bunch of idiots who proposed such retrogressive policy at the HIMPUN rally so that our future generations become the same bunch of idiots as themselves.
An education policy to create the same of IDIOCY as these leaders at the HIMPUN rally. They want our future generations to look like them, think like them, behave like them and be idiots like them.
… and meanwhile, the school girls will be encourage to read for their examds as their literature text , Obedient Wife’s Club founder’s, Hatijah Aam, best seller, ” “Seks Islam Perangi Yahudi Untuk Kembalikan Seks Islam Kepada Dunia ” ( Sex in Islam Wage War Against JEWS to Return Islamic Sex to the World)”.
Teaching muslim girls to have an ORGY couched in the word ISLAMIC SEX.
Perhaps fellow Muslims can explain what is ISLAMIC SEX. Yes I know Islamic Banking (a roundabout way not to use the word “interest:”). WHAT IS ISLAMIC SEX????
I hear nothing from the PAS leaders such as Nik Aziz or that bald over clever Nazri Aziz commenting about this new ISLAMIC SEX best seller from the Obedient Wife Club.

It is a SUCCESS,… successful in exposing the PARANOIA AND STUPIDITY of these Muslim leaders.
The majority Muslims fearing the disappearance of Islam and Muslims in a country where Islam is embedded in the Constitution and where you find a mosque almost every half a kilometre where there are people living.
We have in Malaysia paranoid and idiotic Muslim leaders who think THEY are the Protectors of Islam. Even the Arabs don’t think as stupid as these HIMPUN leaders.

Since only 5000 malay muslims turned out, what would these people call Muslims like me? Instead of fearing the Christians, why don’t they figure out why some Muslims are shunning away from Islam in Malaysia. Did any of you listen to what the Perak mufti said? The way he proclaims that Malay is a special race was akin to the Jews saying they are the chosen people. Good to know that he is no different than the very race he hated.

Gems of Wisdom from the Obedient Wives Club book, ‘Seks Islam: Perangi Yahudi Untuk Kembalikan Seks Islam Kepada Dunia’ (Islamic Sex: Fighting against Jews to return Islamic sex to the world),”
Question: Why did President (Bill) Clinton cheat on his wife, Hillary?
Answer: Clinton could have cheated on his wife because Prophet Muhammad led his 11 wives for the sake of their love. The problem is Clinton is not a smart leader at all, that is with JUST TWO persons. What more with 11!
Question: A Western actress great at sex (Jennifer Aniston) was divorced by her husband, Brad Pitt, who then married Angelina Jolie. Why?
Answer: Brad Pitt is just like all other men in the world, they fear fierce and demanding women. Therefore, even if great at sex, they are fierce. If that woman was loyal and well-mannered, there would have been no divorce.

It is easier to make a promise in the name of religion than for a politician to deliver on a promise he makes. In the csae of the former you have to come to the end of your shelf live to find out if the peromise made has been fulfilled while in the latter within one budget cycle the citizens will know if a politician has delivered on his promise.Separation of stste and religion was a major issue for the christians. But inthe context of today politicians must find the middle ground to ensure that religion and politics reinforce each other and not tear the nation a part.

Parochial minded Muslim leaders like PAS are IMPRISONING ISLAM and imprisoning Muslims with their paranoia about apostasy and making Christians their bogeyman.
As I mentioned earlier, the call for ENACTMENT of anti-apostasy and anti-proselytisation acts. is turning ISLAM into a RELIGIOUS PRISON.
It means, you are INVITED to come in and embrace Islam and be a Muslim, but you CANNOT AND NOT ALLOWED TO GET OUT…. It becomes a LIFE SENTENCE for those who have second thoughts and want to review their faith.
Religion is a PERSONAL understanding and MORAL CONTRACT between an individual as HIS/HER God, and should be NONE of OTHER people’s business, especially the self-appointed religious leaders, including those muftis. When you die, you don’t share the same grave-pit with these religious leaders. The only thing you share is the same dirt on the ground.
Religion is an INDIVIDUAL choice, and should be none of other people’s business if that is the choice of the individual.

Now they want to use ISA to safeguard Islam. Pretty pathetic if you need ISA to safeguard your iman. I’ve been living in the Bible Belt for 6 years now and alhamdulillah I am still a Muslim, praying 5 times a day, fasting in Ramadhan and do what is required from a Muslim. Why are these people so afraid of the Christians? Is their iman so weak that they can be easily persuaded to change religion?
What’s up with yahudi and zionist anyway? I don’t like the zionists but it’s stupid to put the blame on them for every social ills and wrong doings done by Malay Muslims. I pray to God that I’ll get a job in the States so my mental would not be frequently tormented by these people’s imbecility.

Come on Fellow Muslims in the world, get on with it….GET ON WITH THIS LIFE……and for that its by way of the Sciences/Scientific knowledge which is the KEY to upliftment from human miseris & poverty in this World, through harnessing Economic endeavours, which is the more, if not EQUALLY important for better qualities of Life on Earth – this imperative is the area called ‘Scientific Rationalsim’ – Albert Camus.
Spirituality (Rohaniat) & Faith is for the AFTERLIFE…and everything therewith is done IN SILENCE – The prelude to ” Spirituality” is actally via Philosophical Humanism, which is important for the ” Inner” aspect of Man – yes…accumulated through ” Silence”

Here is a great quote from one of our loud-mouth mufti:
Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria said during a speech at the Himpunan Sejuta Umat (Himpun) gathering at Shah Alam stadium
.—–
Poor Arabs… in the eyes of Malay Muslim Muftis such as THIS one from Perak, Arabs are not just being LESS Muslims, they are NOT even Muslims…
Here is one suggestion this Harussani Zakaria should have told the muslim world at the HIMPUN Rally, ” Relocate the Kaabah to Kuala Lumpur or Ipoh” so that the holiest shrine in Islam to be with the people who are TRUE Muslim (rather MORE Muslim than the Arabs) instead of being under the stewardship of the bunch of people from where Islam originated from, who are “NOT NECESSARILY MUSLIMS”.
Have another HIMPUN Rally to Relocate the Kaabah to Kuala Lumpur instead of being in Mecca. Don’t trust these Arabs who are “not necessarily Muslims”.
Frank - October 23, 2011 at 12:47 pm
” Relocate the Kaabah to Kuala Lumpur or Ipoh” – Frank

And PM Najib today praised the Himpun rally success… aduh budak ni! How myopic can this PM be? By doing so, he is impkicitly endorsing the point that the Christians are a threat to Islam. Bodohnya… sebodoh Osama yang tak paham Bahasa Ingrund tadi…

Frank, the Perak mufti is a disgrace. He thinks he’s God-sent for the Malay race. Can’t blame him for being delusional. His mentor, the silver haired sovereign, makes him what he is today. They both are in cahoots.
Tok Cik - October 24, 2011 at 8:24 am
Malay a special breed? If so, I feel ashamed to be one. We don’t even know our true identity and require Al Kutty to identify us. Special breed? Come on, give me a break lah.
Tok Cik - October 24, 2011 at 8:32 am
The people who attended the rally were most probably:
Perkasa fascists, religious extremists, and people bussed
in by UMNO/BN (the rent-a-crowd people).
The Muslims of goodwill would have stayed away.
P.S. I am voting for my moderate Islamist MP from PAS
in the next GE. I was in Turkey recently and note that Prime Minister
Erdogan and his moderate Islamist party is doing a good
job ruling Turkey and managing its economy well.
Phua Kai Lit - October 24, 2011 at 8:41 am
Phua,
One doesn’t have to be moderate muslim to not join this rally. Just following the true teachings of Islam itself would have prevented one from going there. Islam never preaches racism or race superiority. Too bad these people have forgotten that. Instead of figuring out why there are Muslims wanting to leave Islam, they’d rather blame the Christians.

The Malaysian Muslims have clearly sent a message to HIMPUN. We don’t think Islam is under attack by any party in Malaysia. Islam in their views will stand on its own and flourish in Malaysia. Kapish HIMPUN?

Ya….sangat sedih sekali orang-orang yang memakai Nama yang SAMA dengan Osama….di-sebab kan Osama memikir kan diri nya sebagai “penyelamat” umai Islam se-dunia….akhir-akhir nya memepurak-peranda kaum Islam sendiri, kerana mereka tidak kenali lagi sanak-saudara dan keluarga sendiri…..hingga ” meletop-kan diri ” (suicide-bombing culture) selaku so-orang psycho…. Nama Osama Laden synonym dengan Schizophrenic !
Tok Chik, absolutely a disgrace….a person who calls himself Arif, only issues edicts ” Haram…Haram…Haram….” never explaining to the Ummah in detail things that are PERMISSABLE in Islam….disgusting is his latest about ONLY Malays being in Islam….and all other races who are ” muslims” branded as ” murtad”

What qualifications do you need to be a Mufti? From the writings and opinions of this Mufti of Perak he must have graduated from a pondok school. If he had gone to Haj he would have probably seen the millions that come from all corners of the world. They come in all colors, shapes, size, culture and language. Maybe he went on that 5 day VVIP Haj and didn’t do the 40 waktus.

Frank - October 24, 2011 at 1:01 pm
whats the matter with the malays (osama and orangdesa)here? why are you attacking frank. He is merely quoting all the silliness and ridiculous things the malays are doing. From the embarrassing obedient wives club that borders shameful stuff to a gathering of what?. “Hidup melayu hidup Islam”. whats that? I dont understand what that means? Please argue against franks arguments and not attack him. I want to know your learned point fo view.. Argue your point and we will hear you out. What do you mean by “demi survival bangsa”?Pls elaborate. What agenda are you talking about ?actually orang desa I would like you to elaborate further on everything you have said . Dont talk cloak and dagger. Assert your self plainly and clearly. Everyone who is being accussed has a right to know the charge, so they can prepare their defence. If you speak of an agenda, let us know in point form the agenda.
Kathy - October 24, 2011 at 4:29 pm
What does “hidup melayu hidup Islam “mean? Are you asserting that the religion is dependant on the melayus to survive? What an EGO!
Kathy - October 24, 2011 at 4:32 pm
Are you asserting that if tonight all the melayus are wiped out by earthquake or the floods, the religion Islam as we know it will no longer exist?
Kathy - October 24, 2011 at 4:34 pm
“Tidak perlu saya nyatakan siapa mereka ini yang berselindung disebalik pelbagai topeng sandiwara dan mencerca dan mencaci tanpa henti seolah2 negara ini tidak berpelembagaan.” orangdesa
Hello Awang! Jangan sentoh soal perlembagaan sebab awak tidak mengertinya. Di desa ada banyak lagi kerja. Saperti jaga kerbau Dato.

The problem with the post-Mahathir generation is that they believe what UMNO tells them to believe. They grew up not knowing the truth. They think UMNO is about defending the Constitution. That everybody else is about destroying it. They think Islam is the State religion when in fact it is not even the Official religion. They think Malays do not have the right to choose their own religion. Really? And they point to an insignificant article i.e. Article 160(2) which deals with definitions used in the Constitution’ and they point to Article 11 (4) which merely allows the states to prohibit a non-Muslim from proselytizing a Muslim. Nowhere in the Constitution of 1957 can you find anything that says that a Malay must be Muslim. They then amended the Constitution to create a double tracked system of justice, one civil law based on the English common law and the other syariah law. The Federal Constitution passed in 1957 does not contemplate anything near that and states clearly that the Constitution is the supreme law of the Federation: Article 4. But by this constitutional amendment, UMNO ousts the jurisdiction of our civil courts if the matter is in any way connected to Islam (including any issue as to whether an alleged convert to Islam unconscious and on his deathbed had in fact converted to Islam which is a matter of civil law) and give it solely to the syariah courts. The syariah courts of course then say that there can find nothing in syriah law that deals with apostasy.
If ‘orangdesa’ wants to talk Constitution let him address these issues.

That’s like asking a monkey to have a discussion about the weather.
Its way beyond his head.
His brain has been being steeled and hard wired by the crap taught in BTN courses and his window to the world is via Utusan Malaysia and his friends with the same shitty mindset are from that entity called PERKASA which is headed by its leader who yelled aloud “shit -shit -shit” to the TV-host on Aljazeera TV beamed around the world. WATCH THE CLIP…
