Carma Zaid shows Najib the Way Forward

KITA chief, Zaid Ibrahim, has generously outlined a roadmap for Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to make good his decision to revoke Emergency laws and repeal the Internal Security Act (ISA).

Zaid was among the first to applaud the decision and even went as far as to apologise to Najib for underestimating his political will, especially in rescinding the ISA.

Bu in his latest blog post today he noted that the announcement itself is not a game changer and that Najib needed to ensure that the reforms are carried out properly and without delay.

“Public opinion of him will reach new lows if people see him as uncertain or not serious about his plans, or if scrapping the ISA is just a rebranding or vote-grabbing exercise,” Zaid said.

“Any delay in implementing the changes will also embolden the hawks in UMNO to assert themselves, which will make any progress even harder to achieve.”

The former de facto law minister then put forth a host of suggestions that he believed would strenghten and support Najib’s initiative in order to spur “the first real change in a long time in Malaysia’s history”.

The first was to establish a Justice Ministry outside of the department of the Prime Minister’s Office, which Zaid observed was “already bloated”.

“If the PM were to place matters of law and justice under a separate ministry, he would be telling the people that his priorities are ensuring that just laws and justice for all are the pillars of political and social reform,” Zaid said. “This is what the country needs now.”

Controversial decisions

The second recommendation was to adopt the British Cabinet practice where the Attorney-General is a Cabinet Minister which would allow for his presence in Parliament to explain some of his more controversial decisions.

“This sense of accountability will put the government in good light,” Zaid said. “More importantly, the weekly meeting among the Attorney-General, the Home Minister and the Justice Minister will help coordinate the several overlapping matters of law involving the three ministries.”

The third recommendation involved the UMNO Information Unit going on an “overdrive” to explain the necessity of this political transformation.

Zaid (with his team left)pointed out that after 40 years of explaining why the ISA was needed to preserve peace and even Malay political power, it would take considerable time to explain why it is no longer required. But the biggest challenge, he predicted, would be getting the support of UMNO’s senior stalwarts.

“These individuals may be the PM’s most ardent supporters but they may also have other ideas on how democratic reforms and the rule of law should be implemented. Their statements generally are sometimes less than supportive, even hostile. This must not be the case here,”he said

Zaid added that the public would be closely following statements made by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz; Information, Communications and Culture Minister Rais Yatim; Home Minister Hishamuddin Hussein; and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin regarding the reforms.

“Opponents of this change can stuff things badly for the PM, so it’s better to deal with them post-haste,” he said. “Their arguments remain the same. They will say the ‘liberals’ who are pushing for change have not experienced the race riots or the harsh time during the Emergency.”

Powerful forces

“We are not soft-hearted liberals. We are experienced in life and in politics. But we want change because ISA did not prevent the May 1969 race riots. You need other things other than preventive detention to have better race relations.”

Zaid acknowledged that the ISA was useful in dealing with communist insurgents but emphasised that Malaysia no longer have an emergency or facing insurgents, hence the irrelevance of the law.

He also spoke of the many “powerful forces” who want to preserve the status quo and their vested interests, and cited Perkasa as an example.“The PM will undoubtedly come under similar pressure elsewhere, even from within his own party,” he said. “It is therefore up to the rakyat to come together to support these initiatives with conviction and hope.”

  1. Hahaha, slime his way back to UMNO

    Ktemoc,
Is right about former UMNOites sliming back to UMNO? Unfortunately, it’s Zaid Ibrahim. I wonder how’s ktemoc is gonna eat his vomit.

  2. Guys,
I hoped that Pakatan Rakyat picked Saatchi Saatchi & this stupid ads that sunk John Major

  3. “..the Attorney-General is a Cabinet Minister..”

And get double pay, for the persecuting and prosecuting along to his MP duties (otherwise he’d have to be a backdoor senator, like a future job prospect eh)? Nah, i don’t see anyone who can multitask like that in this country, unless he/she is on ‘shrooms’.

Furthermore, our Parliament is like a hen-house as soon as binatangs and other monstrosities, open their gap. No decorum, yet no shoe throwing or physical assaults yet – but that is sure to come. I prefer a court room any day, ‘cuz it’s show how our most esteemed judiciary and prosecutors play Pakatan Rakyat musical chairs.

I would also like to unreservedly apologize to the senator-to-be, if i’ve have inadvertently, said or done something untoward wrt to his character, true or otherwise – ‘cuz I’m also a Wimp, with Nutless Sacs.

  4. First things first, ask the Attorney-General to quit.

  5. Maybe Zaid is aspiring to be the next A-G. Gunny Patel’s contract may soon expire and may not be renewed. Or better still like Abang Aki, Zaid aspire to be elevated to the bench and be the CJ or Lord President. Or maybe the French Connection is going to materialize soon and Zaid wants to represent Jibby. There’s Gold in them mountains, my man.

  6. After leaving PKR and forming his own party, Zaid found himself with an identity-crisis.

“Am I still an UMNO member or am I not?”

“I am an UMNO member, so I will Najib some advice on how to tackle the iSA issue and oh, bad of me, I will apologise to my UMNO leader for the bad things I say about him. ”

” KITA? Oh I forgot I am the President! ”

People say Zaid is ambitious. That is an understatement, Zaid is egoistic, bombastic, an expert in self-aggrandizement, over-clever for his own good , and he thinks he has all the answers to the country’s problems but does not have the follow-through skills to materialise what he says he wants to do. An abrasive character, a throwback to the gentle Malay cultural traits.

  7. Achmed,

Watch it. You don’t want big momma to chase after you!

  8. The way to prevent abuse and get accountability is not a new Ministry but the creation of a small but ELECTED watchdog/Ombudsman type of body that would be out of the reach of the government of the day.

The need for such a body is already apparent eleswhere as more and more citizens realise that politicians cannot be left without truly independent oversight. Malaysia can lead the way.

  9. Zaid is at a ” loss “, not knowing which direction to take at the T-junction….

He has lost his self-purpose, melatah & kelam-kabut….

First case of ” political redundancy ” we can think of in our short history.

Best option for him would be to consider himself ” CONSTRUCTIVELY ” dismissed ! coz if he does ” return ” to UM-NO, this would be the real Carma – or just that Karma is working against him ? ?
