The Rural Heartland: UMNO’s Bastion
by Douglas Tan
Over the past couple of days, the Merdeka Center appears to be publishing a lot of their findings, dampening optimism that Pakatan Rakyat could potentially win enough parliamentary seats in the 13th General Election to form a new government for the first time in our nation’s history.
The study released by political scientist Wong Chin Huat presented on August 9, would put Opposition gains to 100 federal seats up from 75, but short of the 112 seats needed to form the government. Looking deeper into the study, one can see that the biggest hurdle for the opposition to overcome is the rural folks, where Barisan Nasional continues to have a strong foothold.
One of the studies published mentioned that urban areas are more likely to vote for PR candidates, but rural areas would favour BN candidates. This is especially true for areas with low or no Internet penetration. Even in rural areas which do have Internet connection, those who use the Internet may not necessarily be interested in political news or access alternative media.
In a country in which the printed media has been monopolised by BN since independence, to tell those who have been relying on this medium for donkey years would find it very difficult to accept that they are publishing anything other than the truth.
For many, it is important to maintain status quo, as many worry with a change of government, there may be potential repercussions on their daily lives. Rural folks may not even care what is happening down in the cities because it would not affect them.
There is also the element of apathy, especially when the Merdeka Center came out to say that the
effect of Bersih 2.0 in the rural areas were minimal at best. This is predominantly as a result of the government controlled media portraying the demonstrators as hooligans, but also due to the fact that it is engrained in our culture to accept the status quo i.e. accepting what we are told without question.
The Awakening
The fight for electoral reform, civil liberties and fundamental freedoms appear to only gather lukewarm responses at best from the rural folk. There are those who perpetuate the view that we should not even get ourselves into trouble in the first place by questioning the authorities. If we keep our heads down, and mind our own business, we shall continue to live in peace.
However, I do not believe for a moment that these people do not care about their nation. For 54 years, they have believed that their government always has their best interests at heart, whereas rampant corruption and misuse of government funds continue to go unreported.
The BN government know that the best way to win and retain seats in these rural areas, is to keep them in the dark as much as possible, and throw some occasional goodies at them to keep them happy and content.
Now comes the time for awakening. Pakatan Rakyat need to get their machinery out to these areas to talk to the people, make the people understand, and show them that PR can be a capable and competent government. The grass-roots support in these areas cannot be underestimated. BN strongholds can fall, as seen during the Sarawak elections, and the hard work and faith must be maintained.
For all the screaming, shouting and finger pointing which is done in the cities, we must not forget the real battle must be fought in rural heartland, where they are the true king-makers in the coming elections. Only when they are on board with the rest of us, can we see begin change for our beloved nation.
Everyone must do their part during the ‘balik kampung’ period over Hari Raya to spread the word and the truth to their kampungs, and urge the need for change in our nation. We are all responsible for future and progress of our country, and God willing, we shall see change take place for the better.

Douglas Tan , if you are a DAP member , you should be working hard on eliminating Chinese chauvinism within your party . There is still too many chinese chauvinist in your party – and they tend to stand in chinese majority areas. This way their chauvinism get enhanced and not diluted .
To change the mind set of the rural heartland , DAP must first lose its chinese- ness and replace it will malaysian-ness.

Moid, why dont you follow Tunku Abdul Aziz a most accomplished Malaysian Melayu who dares go where no Melayu dares venture – into the heart of DAP, to foster the much needed change for DAP and for our country. Criticize all you like, but it is the people like you that we need to venture into the DAP domain to bring greatness to our country. Change will only come when Malaysians dare to cross the borders of races, the Tunku has, and quite a few Melayus have, so please join us as DAP is not only for one sector of Malaysians, it is for all of us, and together, we can bring change.

Either way moid, james – we’re scewed if PR doesn’t follow this writer’s advice. Yes, DAP has it’s weakness – so does PKR and PAS. Strangely, together, they seem to cancel out each others Achilles heel. PR will be fine if they can really get their act together. Certainly a tripod is better than a monopod/monopoly – that is essentially what UMNO has done to BN.
The rural mentality is totally different from an urban one, and it is one of perceptions and emotionalism, rather than cold brutal facts and hard cash. It is amenable to cajoling, rustic humor and polite rhetoric – not boisterous, offensive propaganda. All that noise, hell and damnation come to naught when faced with a serene well argued poetry.

Subject: Why UMNO led BN will probably Lose in the next 13th General Election?
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Minister of Defence is so confident that UMNO will win BIG in the next General Election.
But Najib knows it is too close to call. 50 : 50
Najib went to see Pope Benedict to win Christian votes.
Najib gives another Ministerial post to MIC to fish for Indian votes.
The mishandling of Bersih Campaign for Fair & Clean Election has eroded further support for Najib & UMNO
But UMNO led BN may lose for these reasons:-
1. Too much corruption
Martin Jalleh said UMNO is the most corrupt entity in the country.
2. UMNO leaders are too arrogant
3. UMNO leaders abused their powers using ISA
4. Too much wastage. Building a RM350 million half crooked bridge from Johor, now rotting in the sun.
5. Too many public interest contracts put under Official Secret Act. Something to hide. If you are so clean and honest, what is there to hide??
Have to Vote the Opposition to power will open up the Files.
6. Penang and Selangor better managed under PR than UMNO
7. UMNO is intolerant to criticisms & suggestions.
8. Discrimnatory Policies – Bill Hatden said Mahathir is a racist. etc etc
9. Petronas Billions – Mahathir’s family & cronies milking Petronas by getting lucrative contracts when papa has influence. Kencana & CEO Mokzani Mahathir got a RM800 million lucrative contract from Petronas.
Isn’t that Corruption??? Mahathir received about RM156 billions from Petronas and Abdullah RM250 billions. And the people & nation do not know where these billions have gone !!! Is this goog governance ???
10. Police, UMNO gangsters, Perkasa, hired criminals suspected committing crimes like breaking into houses/offices and stealing computers, pen drives, files, medical notes &
handouts, watches, photos, diaries etc. This is Anti-Islam and punished by chopping off
the hands according to Arabs.
11. No Justice, Fair Play Human Rights
12. UMNO controls the Police, Prosecutors, Judges, Election Commission, MACC etc
13. Police shot & killed 279 people extra-judiciary killings according to Sivarasa from 2000-9. This included a 15 year old student Aminrulrasyid. 81 shot dead were not identified. No Police officer has been charged and sentenced. Look what happened when the Police shot and killed a 29 year old man Mike Dugan on 4 August 2011.
London was set on fire.
14. UMNO control major media which are propaganda machineries.
15. Education standards down
16. Brain drain
17. UMNO good for intimidating & threatening.
18. EC conducts unfair and dirty Elections – Unfair delineations, unclean voters lists, postal votes, money politics, using govt resources, media etc
5 August 2011 Malaysiakini U tube – Translated roughly
Nasir Mohammad, a clerk in the Armed Forces of Malaysia said openly that he was ordered to vote for others in the Army.
He was NOT registered as a postal voter but was asked to vote as well.
Suhaizan Kaiat (apparently from SPR) told of selling votes in the black market, false signature, Captain Aziz had 4 to 7 different signatures.
He also said that 60% of SPR officers did NOT give back ballots.
This is APPALLING.
What does Election Chairman (EC) Abdul Aziz has to say?
If the above are true, EC has failed in its duties to conduct Fair, Free and Credible Elections.
Yet every time EC denied any hanky panky in postal votes!!!
All the members of EC must resign and apologise to the country and people.
The Election Commission (EC) has been found to have registered a voter named ‘Kg Baru’.The Election Commission (EC) has been found to have registered a voter named ‘Kg Baru’.

19. UMNO does not recognise Excellence, Distinction and Glory
20. Poor getting poorer; rich getting richer. the top 1% earns more than the bottom 50%. Politicians collude with corporate and bizmen
21. High inflation. Prices of houses, food etc going UP UP UP
About 250000 Israelis protested against rising costs of housing , food, transport etc on 5 August 2011
22. The young people are telling openly they want to vote UMNO out.
23. People are deeply divided
24. Crimes are HIGH aggravated by Police, UMNO gangsters, Perkasa & hired criminals.
25. Abuse of power by using ISA, EO, Printing Act, Sedition etc
26. Rumours about Rosmah’s RM24 million ring.
Rosmah is a liability according to the public
27. Rumours say Najib is controlled by his wife Rosmah
28. Malaysians are more educated, more exposed and more vocal
29 Malaysians are not afraid to vote UMNO led govt out. They have lost their fear & doubt & faith.
30. Malaysians want 2 party system
The wind of change is blowing.
Young educated Malays and natives in Kl told me they will go back to kampong and ask their parents to vote the Corrupt UMNO govt out
Let’s wait for the 13th General Election & see.
Criticisms/comments welcome

Moid,
At least those who shout & yell…..we clearly know the ” devil ” , but those who plot & strategise silently behind the scene are evil.
Good psycho;ogists : want more & more….never enough…even if more is given….not enough, never enough…… what a fool everyone is…..

C.L. , I agree with you totally. BN will win the next election simply because DAP, PKR and PAS will fail to penetrate the rural heartland of UMNO. DAP and PKR simply have no credibility outside the cities, except where they have helped the settlers cheated by FELDA – a key strength unused.
james - August 18, 2011 at 9:13 pm
Agree with CL and Moid.
The reality is BN has won the hearts and minds of tje rural people.
Like my kampung people are very excited with Raya gifts of mugs (with pictures of Rosmah and Najib) and cookies from Najib.
Today I am also thrilled to receive bubur lambuk, courtesy of Najib. It’s sent to our offices and several offices in Kl and Putra Jaya and to the city commuters.
Its years since I tasted it. Yums.
Jeff the Man - August 18, 2011 at 9:37 pm
For years now the Mesjid in Kampong Baru have given away bubur lambuk each and every Ramadhan. Nothing new Jeff. You just need to go down there and spend some time getting to know the ordinary folks. You can even volunteer your time to cook the bubur lambuk. I’m sure you know the Mesjid Kampong Baru . It’s not as grand as Mesjid Putra Jaya, Mesjid Petronas or Mesjid Wilayah but the congregation is simple down to earth folks.

Oh okay semper fi. But the container says salam daripada YAB Datuk Seri Najib. Didn’t know it was from Kampung Baru. But memang sedap.
Jeff the Man - August 18, 2011 at 11:31 pm
Jeff, are you that easily bought? I had high hopes for you and now I’m disappointed.
didi - August 19, 2011 at 12:09 am
Salam from Imam Najibee? Wonder who paid for the bubur lambok? Ha ha Didi caught you there. You’re cheap man, one container of bubur lambok and you’re sold. No wonder UMNO can fool all the Malays all the time. One mangkuk of bubur lambok at a time
