PERKASA against BERSIH 2.0′s Electoral and Institutional reform
By Kee Thuan Chye
MANY people have come to regard Ibrahim Ali as a clown, including Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz. One hopes Ibrahim was just talking like a clown when he recently announced that his organization, Perkasa, would oppose the planned BERSIH 2.0 rally on July 9 by staging a counter-demonstration. “That means,” as he himself says, “on that day, there will be confrontation.”
This is militant talk. This is a threat to cause violence. And to add fuel to it, Ibrahim has pledged that in the event of a clash, “I will fight to the end”. But why would PERKASA want to oppose the BERSIH 2.0 rally?
The rally has nothing to do with race – it is not demonstrating against Malay supremacy, which PERKASA was set up to defend. The rally is calling for electoral and institutional reform. It is calling for the electoral roll to be cleaned up, postal voting to be reformed, indelible ink to be used at elections, all political parties to be given free and fair access to the media, automatic voter registration, a minimum of 21 days for the campaign period, the strengthening of public institutions, a stop to corruption, and a stop to dirty politics.
Is PERKASA against free and fair elections? Is it against calling for a stop to corruption?Ibrahim explains: A big demonstration like the BERSIH rally, which expects to draw about 100,000 protestors, will cause chaos. It could be like the protests in the Middle East.
Ibrahim thinks people will throw stones, burn cars, and injuries will result like in Tunisia.
History has shown that this was not the case during the last BERSIH rally in 2007. About 40,000 people were estimated to have taken part then, but it was an entirely peaceful rally, except when the police fired water cannons and hurled tear gas at the protestors. No one was out to throw stones or burn cars.
This time around, the rally is expected to be peaceful as well, aimed at creating awareness among Malaysians of the need for electoral reform. If no one intervened, including the police, if the permit was granted and the police kept vigil merely to pre-empt untoward incidents, there should be no harm done.
So, what Ibrahim has predicted is unfounded. Besides, his reference to Tunisia is ironic. The protests there actually brought down an unpopular and repressive regime. Is such a positive cause, like BERSIH 2.0’s, to be spoken of in negative terms?
In fact, what will cause chaos is the clash that could result if PERKASA and the other NGOs he proposes to co-opt take to the streets at the same time to oppose the BERSIH 2.0 rally. What he is proposing to do is the real danger. But Ibrahim knows he can get away with expressing it because he has always been untouched in the past.
Many have been the times when he said things that could have caused him to be charged with sedition, but never has he been called to account for them. Last month, he said he would launch a jihad against Malaysian Christians if they tried to usurp the position of Islam, and before that, he had said other things that incited hatred against non-Malays.
It may be that the Government takes no action against him because it considers him a clown, or even a paper tiger. Or it may be that he is actually helping the Government by opposing the BERSIH 2.0 rally because the ruling party seemingly does not endorse the idea of free and fair elections. After all, the 2007 rally was partly instrumental in its loss of its two-thirds majority. The ruling party would no doubt be worried that another such rally could dim its prospects at the next general election.
Whatever the reason or reasons, in the context of Ibrahim’s current pronouncement, it looks bad for the Government. Speculation has already been rife that PERKASA is actually affiliated to UMNO, that it is the organization to which UMNO has outsourced the job of defending Ketuanan Melayu so that UMNO is not seen to be racist; now, with PERKASA going outside of its prescribed agenda and raison d’etre as an organization to oppose BERSIH 2.0, it appears to be another Government stooge.
In politics, perception often takes ascendancy over reality, so even if is not true that PERKASA is
affiliated to UMNO, the perception that it is has now been confirmed. Ibrahim says he is stopping the BERSIH 2.0 rally in the name of democracy. This is based on his reasoning that “there are people who do not agree with this rally”. Well, fine. The people who do not agree have a right to express it publicly too. But by the same token, BERSIH 2.0 has a right to stage its rally, so stopping it is actually anti-democratic.
He reportedly goes on to say that he is not worried by the expected BERSIH 2.0 turnout of 100,000 people because most Malaysians will not accept the movement’s demands. If he’s not worried, then why bother to oppose it? He reasons that since Malaysia has a population of 27 million people, even if BERSIH 2.0 were to bring 300,000 to the rally, there would still be 26 million plus who would not agree with it. His mathematics is okay, but his reasoning is clearly faulty and hopelessly warped.
Nazri may be right after all in calling Ibrahim Ali a clown. But even so, if there is a movement going on to campaign for reform, clowns should not be allowed to spoil the party. Especially if they are clowns who might start an unwanted fire.
Yes, Perkasa plays the role of bad cop in the UMNO political game. But I am wondering what ex-PKR politicians and Members of Parliament, Bayan Baru’s Dato’ Seri Zaharain Hashim and Kulim-Bandar Baru’s Zulkifli Noordin were doing at Parliament House by appearing with Ibrahim Ali at a press interview. They are already discredited and now their voters will reject them come GE13. This is probably their last Hurrah. No self esteem left in these self serving politicians.
BERSIH 2.0 is about electoral and institutional reform and the rally is being led by an award winning lawyer who was President, Malaysian Bar Council. I wish her and her colleagues a peaceful and orderly rally on July 9. Don’t let Perkasa scare you. You are doing the right thing for Malaysian citizens.
I am afraid Bersih 2 wont draw a bumper crowd like back in 2007, mainly because those who voted for PR in 2008 after witnessing how PKR & DAP reps and those frogs conducted themselves many are resigned to the fact that it is better to do business with the devil you know than with the devil you dont know. Many Malaysians have given up and are voting with their feet i.e. they pack up and leave. Hindraf are a divided force now, and the indians are swinging back to BN. PKR and DAP have dropped the ball big time.
I am of the opinion Bersih 2 will fizzle out.

JJx,
I think so too. I was there at the 2007 rally. It was different then. Anwar Ibrahim was the star at that time, that is before Sodomy 2 got to him.Let us give Ms. Ambiga a chance to show what woman power is all about.–Din Merican
Well written and sober piece by Kee. He reminds us that BERSIH 2.0 is clearly about electoral and institutional reforms. My views on PERKASA are pretty well known and I need not repeat them. Yes, Gobala, it is a good cop (UMNO)-bad cop(PERKASA) routine. We are not fools not to see that. –Din Merican
Somehow I don’t think the July 9 rally will be a letdown in terms of numbers. So far, many people have been asking one another whether they’re going for it. I’m amazed by the interest being shown. I hope the people do go for it. With PAS rejuvenated, they just might.

The fall of Selangor through emergency powers?
“I will fight to the end”…coming from this comical cowardly clown (Ibrahim Ali)..it is more likely “I will fight @ the end”..he is definitely not the front line type soldier!
Hidup Malaysia!
Only in Malaysia?
1. We have groups OPPOSING a rally for clean and fair elections
2. We have groups SUPPORTING a foreign corporation that wants to use
Malaysia as a permanent dump site for radioactive and other toxic wastes.
Malaysian politics is getting more farcical by the day.
The CLOWN head is for umno, no doubt, and their threat do not seem to be getting the police to swing to action. Imagine someone threaten it to the similarities to Tunisia like. This is AMAZING MALAYSIA!!!
” You are doing the right thing for Malaysian citizens “. – Gobala
Gobala , it is time, Malaysian citizens like you and me stood up and did the right thing too . So i hope i will see you and the others who participate here at the rally.
BERSIH 2 is expected to be a roaring success. That is why UMNO is nervous and has outsourced its opposition to the Rally to Perkasa and PDRM. In return Perkasa will be given immunity.
Let me predict what is to come.
The police, with its power of clairvoyance, will foresee violence and seek a court order to stop the rally. Perkasa will be praised and defended. BERSIH will be condemned as ant-national elements.
DO NOT BE SURPRISED IF SOME ARE PICKED UP UNDER THE ISA!!! for undermining national security.
I support Ambiga’s ideal and courage for upholding what is rightfully our RIGHTS. The Indians can continue to vote with their feet and Hindraf is now nothing but a clown especially Uthaya , a domesticated pussy cat.
Bersih will surely bring out the ‘Best’ from Kotor.
The numbers taking to the streets will certainly be more than the previous version.
K.L. Central will be fine, until the lock-down on 6-8th July by the Goons. They are all out to give the impression that there will be chaos. Typical chaos theory, without the maths. The organizers are well aware of Agent Provocateurs and the PAS-DAP youth are ready. PKR? If they don’t quarrel amongst themselves..
UMNO and Perkasa will have to watch within, not only the other way around. For they too will be infiltrated.
Clowns are those characters found in circus troupes, dressed in funny attire and full of antics to make you laugh and keep you entertained. Ibrahim Ali a clown? But, his repugnant and repulsive face will fizzle out, and extinguish, whatever joys of humour and amusement that you may have. And that, surely leaves you flat and tasteless without even a sense to smile. Do a wax figurine of this as**ole and put it into the house of rogues museum.
It looks like Perkasa is going to be a test bed for UMNO’s experiments in psychological warfare against PR, and power personification for BN(UMNO).
whats this – post independent malaysians against pre-independence malayans or vice-versa?
Hopes of an Arab Spring in Malaysia? Forgetdaboutit, as we say over here.
Well danil, Bersih is pre-independent UMNO while Perkasa is out-sourced Umno.
Ain’t got no spring in here torrid regions, but lots of spring chickens dancing poco-poco. From what i heard, it’s gonna be a humongous rally. The only doubters will be from people who’ve buried their heads in the sand with their posterior sticking out.. Reality is stranger than fiction, and anybody who matters, ain’t taking Perkasa’s bluster seriously.
Bersih’s problem is strictly logistical not ideological. Buses, vans, taxis and other means of mass conveyances including the proverbial kerbau cart will be banned from entry into CBD K.L. Traffic jams (due to unwarranted roadblocks). will be absolutely horrendous for a few days and it’s deliberately aimed at heightening the public ire. But it won’t happen except for the BN supporters. Welcome home, Bean!
Spring chickens? The one with or without feathers?
Yup! CLF…clash of the Titans or a battle between David and Goliath?
Havent had the ones without feathers for a long time now…
Out sourcing its dirty work…. Who is gonna do the cleaning-up and make it Bersih once again?
The spring chickens will sprout feathers and combs, if the conditions dictate. Spring chickens have the habit of dethroning Capons (Eunuch Roosters) who have lost the cojones, but can still crow.
It used to be when the organizers would give a packet of ‘nasi campor’ with or without the said piece of chicken, a bottle of mineral water and a couple of ringgit to cover transportation costs. That was valued at RM20-50 per participant early last decade.
Nowadays, that won’t even factor in the mineral water that’s required to wash off the sting of tear gas or chemically laced fluids from water cannons. These are the hormones on which chickens are sprayed with.. Too much and they become angry.
The fellas who will be taking part in this Bersih rally are doing it for free for “Change”; and they are about to clash head on with Obscurantism backed by Military-style hardware and tactics. Their opponents wall is crumbling and they are confused. Conflicting statements abound.
This is not by any means like the Arab Spring. This is more like the Orange Revolution of Ukraine and may be as prolonged. It depends on how the goons respond. The wisest thing would be to remain benign and be good traffic cops.
When it comes to Malaysians, it is more like the kecut teloq revolution. Forgetdabbout it.
Some pigs come with lipstick. Can we put lipstick on these chickens?
I have a nagging feeling that Bersih 2.0 will attract a bigger turnout this time despite the refusal of opportunists like Uthaya to support it. And Perkasa is likely to be the agent provocateur to give PDRM the pretext and option for an Ops Lallang-type clampdown on the Opposition.
Nevertheless, Bersih 2.0 is what Malaysia sorely needs in this crucial run-up to yet another possibly historical General Election.
Bersih 2.0, Suhakam, Amnesty International and all other concerned nonpartisan NGOs must proactively manage this scenario by appealing for the diplomatic corps and international news agencies in Malaysia to actively observe Bersih 2.0′s March for Democracy, with the use of every feasible recording device.
In the event of untoward incidentsw provoked by Perkasa and the PDRM, the Rakyat will then not be starved of information to form its own conclusions independently of the official line. And the world will and must also know too.
If Bersih 1.0 helped bring about the 308 Tsunami, Bersih 2.0 has the potential to be the tipping point towards Malaysia’s TRUE Merdeka.
Kecut teloq?
Yup. That too. But i think, people all over the planet are the same. It’s just that some have more fire in their belly and react faster to perceived wrongs. Some are more lembek and really need to suffer sufficient deprivation before they twitch. Propaganda plays an important tool, but with the advent of the ‘net, that ain’t so easy nowadays.
The universe is intrinsically chaotic and uncertain. All that needs to be done is to tap into the primeval human yearning for order and justice, however fleeting.
Images play an important role and the value of sacrifice tap into the core of humanity.
It is entirely probable that the patient, noble ‘gentlemanly’ Malay of yesteryear is no more.
Nazri was not doing his his job in letting Ibrahim off the hook by just calling Ibrahim a clown. By right Nazri should should send a clear message to the rakyat by reprimanding Ibrahim for stirring hatred among Malaysians ! Instead Nazri’s lame reply was that there no violent incident occured after Ibrahim comments. Prevention is better than cure! If Nazri was to wait for violence to occur before he arrest Ibrahim, it will then be too late !
No action taken against instigators like Ibrahim will no doubt give him (and similar rabble rousers) the idea that “they can say what they want” to create chaos in the future. With such lame treatment by Nazri, you can bet that such incident will occur in the near future.
God save Malaysia…
I am sorry despite the optimism shown by some here, I still say Bersih 2 will be a tame affair.
I say only about 20k will show up. There is also a chance Bersih 2 be called off by the organisers.
Come 13GE, Sabah & Sarawak will still go back to BN overwhelmingly.
PR will lose Selangor and Kedah. And no, they wont win back Perak.
PR will retain Kelantan & Penang with a reduced majority.
Bagero, if you think it’s ok to keep an electoral system that’s so warped and corrupted to help this regime retain power for:
1) a bribe-soliciting police force
2) “mysterious” deaths by shootings and in police/MACC custody
3) government-owned media that spews racist hatred
4) a bloated and inept civil service that can pay RM1.8 mil for 6 Facebook pages
5) systematic marginalization of poor minorities, including the Orang Asli (fyi REAL Bumiputra!)
6) losing our best brains to Singapore, US, UK, Australia, etc.
7) harga BN (Barang Naik!)
8) submarines that can’t dive, jet engines that can fly to Uruguay by themselves, etc.
9) crying ‘bankruptcy’ despite billions of RM from Petronas since the 70s.
10) e.t.c.!
then you must surely be either selectively blind to injustices, or you are one of those people who are benefiting from the dirty money involved. Your choice.
In either case, fyi Malaysia is our home and we’re staying to try fixing it. With or without any help from people like you.
