Barisan Nasional can wrest Kedah back if…, says Che Det
Barisan Nasional (BN) will be able to wrest back Kedah if there is no infighting among the leaders, especially in UMNO, says former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“But the problem is, when someone is moving up, another person who is not, will try to bring him down. Then when it’s the latter’s turn to move up, yet another will try to do the same.”
He cautioned that BN would not be able to win the general election in Kedah if the leaders did not do away with the culture of “cantas mencantas” (toppling one another).
The former premier was speaking to reporters after officiating at the Giatmara Silver Jubilee (1986-2011) celebration at Giatmara Prima Kubang Pasu, here, today.
He was asked about BN’s chances of regaining Kedah following the appointment of Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah as the state UMNO liaison chief and Jerlun Member of Parliament Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir as the deputy chief.
Asked whether he had a hand in his son’s appointment to the post, Dr Mahathir said he was
not involved at all with the decision-making process. He said he has never interfered with Mukhriz’s political career from the start and any decision involving the latter was made by the prime minister and other top UMNO leaders.
“Even when I was prime minister, I forbade my sons from being involved in politics as people would talk, and now that I am no longer prime minister, I have also not interfered,” he added. – Bernama

In your dreams, Al Kutty. In your dreams…
Tok Cik - January 12, 2011 at 11:17 pm
Duh! You mean he’s still alive and kicking? Sigh!!!!
limasen - January 12, 2011 at 11:28 pm
Our friend, Tok Cik, who will be visiting Kulim and Bandar Baru where Zul Nordin is the Member of Parliament may be able to give you a fairer assessment of UMNO politics in Kedah.
I agree with Che Det that UMNO Kedah is in a mess. They are actually “killing each other” politically speaking. There is first the legacy of Mahadzir Khir corrupt administration which hangs like a millstone around UMNO Kedah’s neck. Second, UMNO made the strategic error of appointing Shafie Apdal, a Sabahan, as UMNO Liaison Chief. UMNO Headquarters failed to appreciate the reality that UMNO Kedah is adverse to what they perceive as “outside interference”.This is compounded by the fact that UMNO Perlis too is having problems.
So the decision to appoint the new Kedah team of Dato Bashah and Dato Mukhriz is an admission by Prime Minister and UMNO President Najib that all is not well in Kedah. In fact, it is an act of desperation. But, I think, it is too late to change things around before the next General Elections.
PAS Kedah is a disciplined, well organised and funded political machine. The incumbent Menteri Besar has the support of the rural heartland and the Chinese and Indian communities in the state. So, it is going to be tough for UMNO Kedah to take on PAS because like Kelantan, Kedah is making steady progress.
Dato Seri Azizan is a consensus builder and runs a clean administration. He has been over the last 2 years able to win the confidence of Kedah’s much revered Sultan, and the state civil service. The lesson is never to lose for your political territory because wresting control back is not easy.
Ahmadi Hussein - January 12, 2011 at 11:38 pm
My bet is that Mukhriz Mahathir will at some point be his home state’s Menteri Besar — an equivalent rank to that of Deputy Minister. I would say the stage is set for him to lead UMNO’s effort to wrest control from PAS. He may give it a pass and for good reasons.
Syed Nahar was at first unhappy when he was asked to take the job as MB because that would mean spending less time in the capital rubbing shoulders with the federal boys. And he was right. Over here the governor’s job is viewed as training ground for the U.S. Presidency. On the other hand, there is something about being an MB which makes it a dead end job.
_________
Mongkut Bean,
If Mukhriz has ambitions to be Prime Minister (and Che Det won’t help him!), then he should be chalking Federal level experience in key ministries and playing with the Party BIG boys like Prince in Waiting Muhyiddin Yassin, in stead of wasting his time trying to be a provincial governor. So I think he should look at what happened to Syed Nahar and Sanusi Junid. Even the effective and engaging Osman Aroff had problems in dealing with the local UMNO fat cats and so-called kingmakers. Kedah was their political Waterloo. Mukhriz needs to watch out for Khairy J too.–Din Merican
Mr Bean - January 12, 2011 at 11:45 pm
Something of a catch-22.
Do a good job as MB, you will be asked to continue with your good job. Mess it up and you will not get nominated for any other post.
Mr Bean - January 12, 2011 at 11:49 pm
Din,
Frankly I am tired of all the katak bawah tempurung and the circus shows around us.
Let me digress and see this interesting Video.
Dr. Mongkut better take note of what this man said. In any case, Tok Cik and me is getting ready to fetch you at the airport with our kerbau.
tean - January 13, 2011 at 12:09 am
good video – that’s why there is rumor that says that FB will be shut down in this country too.

Few things are more daunting than having baron states like Kedah, Perlis, Malacca , N.Sembilan , Perak , Kelantan falling either to PR or BN .A prospect of having the two Borneo states coming exclusively under the hands of their respective local base parties .Accompanied by a situation where the remaining more industrious states having a fair share of Bumis and Non-Bumis elected ADUNs in both the opposition and Government.
In the Federal level on the other hand , MP seats are shared almost equally amongst representatives of UMNO led BN , PKR led PR and a combination of elected reps of the two Borneo states.
Would this be a worse case or best case scenario for the country ? Could it trigger another May 13 or a prelude to a more unified Malaysia ?

In the next life, you and Tok Cik should come back as gynecologists.
Mr Bean - January 13, 2011 at 2:08 am
Tok Cik may want to double up as Tok Mudin. That is up to him.
Mr Bean - January 13, 2011 at 2:09 am
Mongkut Bean,
No more Tok Mudin and antiquated procedures that you and I and the rest of our generation had to put up with, and the ceremonies that came with it. Those days are gone. I think Tean does not know what we are talking about. He has his cap on!!. I am still awake. Just finished and posted an article and also posted something on Yoga.–Din Merican
dinobeano - January 13, 2011 at 2:15 am
Din,
If my memory is correct , it was maha kutty mohammed who introduced the culture of ” cantas mencantas ” ( crab mentality ) when he toppled or brought down Tun Hussein Onn.
And now he says or asks UMNO to curb this culture ?
sunshine - January 13, 2011 at 10:17 am
during tun m premiership he do lots of cantas-mencantas till there is no credible leadres in umno..look what happen now……has he forgotten……crab…
jacob - January 13, 2011 at 10:18 am
I think Tean does not know what we are talking about…Din.
Bro. Din cannot remember that I was from Cock-diang and all my classmates at primary school were Malay boys and their fathers came to my house for pokok pisang for the ceremony. Yes, even back then I was very grateful and feeling super lucky to be spared the blade of Tok Mudin. But, that doesn’t mean I was also exempted from “masuk Melayu” just like Mongkut masuk China and Tok Cik masuk Iban without looking at halal certificates.
tean - January 13, 2011 at 11:19 am
Masuk China?? When did I go to China??
Mr Bean - January 13, 2011 at 11:58 am
Ooop masuk Cina..the Cantonese said “yam thong” or “drinking soup”.
Tok Cik prefers his soup with hot black pepper but unfortunately he can only dreaming of opening up a restaurant at Lembah Pantai.
tean - January 13, 2011 at 12:09 pm
It does appeared that those who were in power would like to hold on to it, even though they have expired their term, and that’s what appears in BN. It is as if there is no other more capable candidates to take over, then how will our country progress????????
concerned citizen - January 13, 2011 at 12:29 pm
The senile old man is trying to position his son Mukhriz. Remember Mukhriz is the MP from Kedah.
it is all part of the senile old man’s big plans to fast track Mukhriz before he meets up with his 72 Virgins.
Frank - January 13, 2011 at 1:05 pm
Masuk Iban? Tean, pray tell he how? I had served in Sarawak for many years and even if I want to masuk Iban, I don’t think my Iban friends will allow me. Unless you take it in a more subtle form.
Tok Cik - January 13, 2011 at 1:46 pm
Tok Cik as Tok Mudin? No, too messy. Prefer to be Tok Hentam. That’s what I gonna do in Zulkifli Nordin’s backyard soon…
Tok Cik - January 13, 2011 at 1:50 pm
“Tok Cik, ….may be able to give you a fairer assessment of UMNO politics in Kedah.” Ahmadi Hussein.
With idiots like Zulkifli Nordin on Umno’s payroll Ustaz Azizan’s efforts are made the more easier. Zul dares not step in his constituency. He’ll be lynched alive.
PAS with its able foot soldiers is making inroads in Kedah. Umno is no go in areas such as Kulim-Bandar Bahru. Take it from me…
Tok Cik - January 13, 2011 at 2:01 pm
Tok Cik ,
Does the ” no go ” also apply to maha kutty and his apprentice petty thief muruku-khriz ?
salmiah hassan - January 13, 2011 at 5:08 pm
There is no where in the Koran that speaks of 72 virgins. Let it rest now. As for Mahathir and all his issues, please GO AWAY.
Kathy - January 13, 2011 at 6:26 pm
Tok Cik@Tok Hentam,
Since you are getting ready to hentam in Kulim, I suggest you also consider going to my backyard in Jerlun to hentam the Kutty’s son as well.
I am sure you can do better than Ong Bak. Look!
tean - January 13, 2011 at 6:46 pm
That’s correct sunshine, he was the one who doctored the cantas-menchants culture when he came to power : he wanted to weed-out so-called Malaysians who had been ” brain-washed ” by the whites ! He got rid of many good Malays who were western educated
When he was di-cantas-kan oleh YM Tunku Abdul Rahman from UMNO, and in the wilderness, it was to be Dato Harun Idris (former MB of Selangor then ) being the ” favourite ” of the Second PM , Tun Abdul Razak, that saw his reinstatement back into UMNO.
Ingratitude still ok, but he cantas Dato Harun Idris…
When his son is now on the ” ascendency “, in his preemption, he is desperately calling out to people NOT to carry on with this cantas-mencants culture !
Yes, I agree, incredible this culture !

Your response to this Kat please http://wikiislam.net/wiki/72_Virgins
Mr Bean - January 13, 2011 at 8:45 pm
Apparently it exists in the imagination of hadith and Islamic scholars. As to the 72 virgins waiting at Heaven’s Gate, no one has been there and returned to tell us and until someone does I guess we’ll never know.
Mr Bean - January 13, 2011 at 8:49 pm
“Ooop masuk Cina..the Cantonese said “yam thong” or “drinking soup”. ” tean
Chinese say, “Yam to to (*bleep*) siew siew”
Mr Bean - January 13, 2011 at 8:54 pm
Oh that might have been a conversation for the rights of passage for men. I will research this and investigate but I cannot see it anyhwere in the Koran.
Kathy - January 14, 2011 at 3:38 am
There is no where in the Koran that speaks of 72 virgins. – Kathy
Not exactly..that is true
Try the following:
An-Naba 78:31-34 and Sunan al-Tirmidh
Frank - January 14, 2011 at 4:12 am
Bro. Din, kita kena tanya Maha Fir’aun siapa ‘maha guru’ budaya cantas mencantas’ kalau bukan Maha Fir’aun itu sendiri. As seen on TV recently, the way he put it with his poker face he has got nothing to do with it. Ini adalah satu sifat2 buruk yang ada pada Firaun. Memualkan !!!
ariffdanial - January 14, 2011 at 3:03 pm

http://rantingsbymm.blogspot/2010/12/jew-explains-quran.html
Jewish lady talks about precisely the interpretation. However, sometime ago there was gentlemen who remarked here at Din’s blog and said that not all of Prophets conversations/”commands” were hadith and that term carried a few meanings.
We need to be careful not to misrepresent what was command and what was mere conversation or symbolism.
Kathy - January 14, 2011 at 6:10 pm
salam., sir, i want to ask you a question, would you agree with the mca’s suggestion about changing the style of giving the ‘chair’ not to UMNO?
