Men like Zaid Ibrahim finish last
by Rashid Yusof @www.nst.com.my
DATUK Zaid Ibrahim indicated to the New Sunday Times he had earned disproportionate media coverage. He certainly has not been criss-crossing the nation whipping up sentiment and support. He was at home. The apparent political inertia has not stopped him from gaining a great deal of media space and being in the middle of a raging political storm. The net effect of which is enhanced visibility.
“Not really. It is not what it looks or sounds like,” admitted Zaid when the NST pointed out that he must have been super busy. He was not meditating when the NST entered his home. Neither was he very awake.
As speculation on his intentions mount — and another prominent headline duly generated — the 60-year-old lawyer-cum-politician said he was without a secretary and in the midst of building a home-office.
Zaid makes an absorbing case for profile writers. He had languished away in the obscure corners of UMNO for 23 years — making unsuccessful attempts for posts for 10 of those years. Throughout, nobody stepped into a press conference claiming to be “I am a Zaid supporter… more shall soon step forward “.
He is no general, hardly the archetypal political operator. He is not a great orator, looks disinterested — at the very least incredulous — at the outset of the NST interview, and does not seem to be propped up by legions of supporters and structure.
As the interview progressed, the full repertoire and persona of Zaid popped up — he conducts his politics via the media.
He knows he was exposing himself to the conclusion that he has been prolonging the anguish — his tormented existence in the troubled Parti Keadilan Rakyat — for it would churn out more media coverage. Of course, it may not be the case.
Yet, he could have announced his exit in any of the preceding interviews. Yesterday, he would only allow a feeble blog posting that he would announce — what seems to be his imminent departure — on Friday.
He is exactly the kind of politician destined to be a media darling. He does not offend the media — largely. He gives good interviews, coherent answers and a range of new angles. In a nutshell, he makes sense.
Still, the realm of politics is about having constituents knocking on your doors at strange hours, of having to douse political fires all the time, of building bridges and alliances, of making concessions, drafting policies and building consensus.
Politics transcends the declaration of lofty ideals, it is also about serving, slogging it out and reaching out, and, yes, giving good interviews. Perhaps someone somewhere shall proclaim at some point that the greatest fallacy propagated by PKR — hence by its de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim — has been to adopt Zaid unquestioningly.
Politics gets nasty at times, especially when you manage to attract a range of spirited souls as PKR does, and nice men like Zaid would find the strains unbearable. It used to be Dr Chandra Muzaffar, the party’s first deputy president. Did not the former president of Aliran harbour more or less the same set of complaints as Zaid does? PKR is about Anwar, period.
Zaid was candid and it was courageous of him. He has no delusions about his political prospects. He has no leadership aspirations. “I want to get a seat in Parliament” which is how he has come to frame his political ambition.
He would not have the resources to start a major political party, he said. A smallish organisation would suffice. Perhaps people will listen to him and he will, indeed, make more sense than all those who are bound to win the top posts in PKR. The flaws and the fault-lines in the Zaid-PKR nexus are entirely PKR’s.
Lompat si katak lompat
Lompat lah tinggi tinggi
Dari PAS UMNO oh oh
Dan Ke PKR
Skarang lompat ke mana
Ta perlu lompat lagi
Kalau salah lompat
Terus masuk dalam lubang

Men like zaid finish last for exposing Anwar and Azmin’s lies and cheats…..phantom members voting! is this not proof of cheat, then what is it Mr Saifuddin? What is it Anwar? Azmin?
Azizah, are you the President? or a housewife?
dennis - November 16, 2010 at 5:50 pm
Anwar has too many personal problems. He couldnt even managed his sodomy case well enough and the public perception is he is somewhat involved.
Blaming UMNO, Najib, conspiracy and everyone else but himself made Anwar an outcast and out-of-sort leader of Pakatan. As for Azizah, certainlyly she is a puppet president.
I am done with PKR. Full of lies, hipocracy and deceit.

Leaders in PKR has little loyalty to their party. Prooven by the numbers of MPs/Aduns who have left. Come PRU13 even if PKR win some seats, there’s no assurance the elected wont jump ship.
PKR cannot be trusted anymore. Anwar is true to his words, his triple-tongue words. I will never trust Azmin too.

“I am done with PKR. Full of lies, hipocracy and deceit.”
Do you guys really think you are that important?
I don’t. So where’s the hurt? Real salt of the earth flurs aren’t you?
Btw, what on earth are triple tongue words? You cannot even trust yourself – being led by the nose by ‘words’ and end up disappointed. Btw, are you guys bachelors, divorced or remarried?
Menyalak-er - November 16, 2010 at 6:58 pm
Do you guys really think you are that important????
when PKR have people who think like this, who feel common people are not important, then PKR is indeed a party of hypocrasy.what a sad episode. Go on barking like a dog to those who feel betrayed by PKR.

james lo - November 16, 2010 at 8:21 pm
No, it wouldn’t sunshine. In fact it just confirms my suspicion.
It is not about Zaid, Anwar, PKR or anything else but self deception.
Menyalak-er - November 16, 2010 at 8:58 pm
Nobody deceives those who cannot be deceived. That’s politics, and all thing isn life. Yes, even a marriage. Indeed, it’s sad – the only people who feel hurt, never look at themselves. You want to punch someone else, but you don’t see your own hubris. The truth, like love hurts. Listen:

Now we have to wait to see if Zaid Ibrahim could be that Lazarus who rose from the dead. But then who would play Jesus?

Frank is in his elements once again …. lol. Good to know.
Mr Bean - November 16, 2010 at 11:14 pm
A well written article but to potray Zaid as the guy mishandled by PKR. Zaid can be an angel till kingdom comes. Has he proved his calibre, principles etc. His petition to annul the by election failed because he was to have filed the petition but was done by a law firm. Something there? Hope his quitting would strengten PKR/PR. Many lessons to be learned. BTW need to find out how many millions these katak PKR guys get to jump ship to be “ independents“ Can wallow in a life of luxury for not doing anything for the party or the rakyat that voted you in.

Your comments are quite disjointed. Can’t get a handle what you are trying to say. Hope you didn’t have too many drinks from the bar while composing your thoughts.

YUP our ‘old’ Frank is back.
Bean, did you get that cheap wine yet? If you havent, can I recommend Gran Tarapaca Reserva 2005, a superb merlot from Chile.
muse - November 17, 2010 at 6:58 am
Prince Harry just *popped* the question. When are you guys gonna *pop* yours??
Mr Bean - November 17, 2010 at 8:14 am
Dear Frank
Thanks for highlighting the issue. Should have just focussed and written on a main issue rather than bring in a few other issues. My stand is simple. Zaid `s actions do not reflect what he stood for earlier. Just worked out to see these characters trying to bring down PKR/Anwar , by bad mouthing the on going party elections and getting unwanted MSM media attention. I am a PAS supporter and support PKR because it is in Pakatan Rakyat ( PR ). Anyway PR was possible because of Anwar and not Zaid.
