Nazri Aziz: “Being civil to the Opposition is the right thing to do in a democracy”

Nazri Aziz to Utusan Malaysia’s Awang Selamat: “Being civil to the opposition is the right thing to do in a democracy.”
www.themalaysianinsider.com
BUCHAREST, September 20 — I have read the comments by Awang Selamat on me in his column. I want to make some clarifications lest readers be misled into thinking what he wrote is correct.
Firstly, I am never afraid to be criticised by the opposition. I would like Awang to come to Parliament and see and hear for himself the vitriol and attacks I received whilst defending the Government on issues related to the Prime Minister’s Office.
In my 33 years in politics, I was never spared by anybody who makes criticisms against me — including the recent comments by Awang. I don’t know about Awang himself, because I don’t even know who he is. I hope he can be a man like me and prove that he is not scared of criticism by coming out in the open and not hiding behind the pseudonym that he uses.
I am also not anti-Dr Mahathir (Mohamad). To me, so far he is the best prime minister I have served. However, as an ex-premier, there is so much left to be desired.
Awang should get out of his time warp and face the fact that I am now in the government as a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and not vice versa. So it is Tun Mahathir who is criticising the Government and not the other way round.
Of course anybody, regardless of who criticises the government, will receive relentless attack in defence of the Government by me just as I had done in the past when Tun Mahathir and Tun Abdullah (Ahmad Badawi) were the prime ministers.
Having said that, I want Awang to know that I am always sure who my boss is. It’s not (Lim) Kit Siang nor (Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim) because they are not prime minister of Malaysia, the chairman of BN or president of UMNO.
I am not too sure Awang knows who his boss is because he undermines the 1 Malaysia policy of the Prime Minister and promotes the narrow racism of (Datuk) Ibrahim Ali who is not even an UMNO member. Awang should be asking himself the question he posed to me.
Being civil to the opposition is the right thing to do in a democracy, because just like me, they are also elected by the people. Of course, Awang is caught in the time warp of those days where government MPs do not only not engage them but hate and dislike them in all circumstances.
Awang will never understand this because he is not an elected MP, put in the House by the voice of the people. Anyway did Awang ever think of how five PKR MPs could cross and be independents, if not for the civility shown by me to them as parliamentary affairs minister?
The number of crossovers to the independent caucus has exceeded the single MP from Pasir Mas, this so-called Malay Hero worshipped by Awang. Incidentally, UMNO has never asked or needed for Ibrahim to help us but the association with him will only cause us to lose votes.
Tun Mahathir himself told us about his loss in Kota Setar Selatan seat — a 90 per cent Malay majority parliamentary constituency — in 1969 to Yusof Rawa, where it was reported that Tun said he didn’t need Chinese votes. There is a lesson to be learned from this.
Of course, Awang will never understand because not only has he never offered himself as a candidate for the General Elections but readers don’t even know who he is.
Politicians like me who has stood for four general elections and won clearly have to be very careful in what we say and not be reckless like Awang. We need to muster all the votes regardless of race and we do not stay in the comfort zone as Awang does.
He can write and say anything irresponsibly and recklessly, knowing that he will never be punished by the voters. That is why, Awang, if you asked what my agenda is, I think even school children will know that it’s to win the next general election and ensure that Datuk Seri Najib (Razak) remains as Prime Minister of Malaysia.
I do hope that Awang also has the same agenda, unless of course his boss is somebody else. Finally I would advise Awang to stick to what he does and knows best and not try to meddle in national politics, of which he has shallow knowledge and zero experience.
He should concentrate in increasing his paper’s dwindling readership. It speaks volumes of their poor standards and performance when Utusan has to refer to the news report of the new electronic alternative media when it should be the reverse.
That will be his KPI and the measurement of his success in the field that he claims he represent well. Mine is, of course, to win the Padang Rengas seat for Barisan Nasional in the next General Election regardless whether I am a candidate or not. Until then we shall see.
And yes I am a Malaysian first and Malay next. Does any bigot have a problem with that?
* This letter by Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Tan Sri Abdul Aziz is in response to a Mingguan Malaysia editorial “Alahai Nazri …” by Awang Selamat. The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and MP for Padang Rengas emailed it from Bucharest, Romania, where he is attending the Malaysian-Romanian Inter-Parliamentarian Friendship Group” meet from September 19 to 23, 2010.

I agree wholly with this anak jantan UMNO. He has served his masters well. His relationship with Najib go back long ways – starting back in the young days when both were in UMNO Youth. Not many in UMNO are as loyal as him. He is always the Gurkha who takes the flak when others will push the blame to someone else.
Remember the aborted proposed new Parliament House. There were others who were all for a new Parliament. When it was shot down, only Nazri took full responsibility for the mistake.
Sayang Bangsa - September 20, 2010 at 8:38 am
Nazri is right of course but are we really living in a democracy? It sure doesn’t feel like it. Can’t help but notice that Nazri has been more civil and sensible in his recent speeches. He used to put his foot in his mouth but lately appeared to be more sensible than most of his racist and bigoted colleagues who are apt to talk like mental retards. Did he get hit by lighting or something?
Personally I think he makes a better Home minister than that kampung idiot. Maybe I’m wrong about him.
imwatchingu - September 20, 2010 at 8:42 am
Frankly, I think Nazri would make a better DPM than the current one. At least he will have less tendency to back stab his boss. He can sound reasonable when he chooses. As for Awang Selamat, he should not be too upset. After all, one can find paid sycophants behind every bush.
apaijabu - September 20, 2010 at 8:48 am
hmmm…now if such ‘balanced’ views can be expressed so eloquently by nazri on this apanamawang. How come his boss cannot do the same? Is nazri better qualified or more eloquent? hmmm….’being civil to the opposition (and may i add, minority races, perhaps/) is the right thing to do in a democracy”
When overseas, i am Malaysian 1st.
Back home, I am a (proud) Pendatang 1st.
hurricaneMax - September 20, 2010 at 9:08 am
Hurricane Max,
Ethnicity aside, we are all Malaysians. My ancestors were pendatangs. If you go by the logic of that UMNO Penang mamak, whatever his name, I am a pendatang too. But I do not give a hoot to him because I think he is a self serving idiot.
What can Article 153 do if the Malays can’t compete in a globalised world where competition is the norm. These Ultras are out of date and narrow minded. Awang Selamat who is real name we do not know (to quote Nazri) is probably the worst of them because he uses his pen to spread ill will and discord among Malaysians. If his editor of Utusan Malaysia, he should be fired because he is doing a great disservice to our country.–Din Merican
dinobeano - September 20, 2010 at 9:17 am
Note that Nazir stated he is a Malaysian first and Malay second.
Glad that he is now lo longer the one who’s ‘bashed’ by both UMNO and the opposition.
Being a Malay is now no longer fashionable.
Even our beloved Tok Guru Nik Aziz has said he’s not proud to be a Malay.
He said being a Malay is just automatic. If there is a dominant race it should be Arab.
Hmm, it looks now only Muhyiddin, Tun M and Ibrahim Ali are proud to be Malays.
Tun M is more Malay than most Malay I know.
Takkan Melayu hilang di dunia, no??
Sayang Bangsa - September 20, 2010 at 9:17 am
” And yes , i am a Malaysian first and Malay next . Does any bigot have a problem with that . ” – Nazri
No , i don’t have a problem with that Dato Seri . WELCOME ABOARD. But i am not too sure about your good old friend Mr Muyuddin , the deputy prime minister . He says, as you put it, that he is a ” BIGOT ” in the same mould as mahathir and ibrahim ali.
So how Dato’ Seri ? Mr Muyuddin is also your boss .
salmiah hassan - September 20, 2010 at 9:23 am
Nazri is clear: Najib is his boss since he reports to the Prime Minister. Previously, Mahathir and sleepy Badawi were his bosses. The chain of command is obvious. Nazri understands management. And you are a little confused, Salmiah.–Din Merican
dinobeano - September 20, 2010 at 9:29 am
The real question is what Nazri now thinks of Perkasa, now that the entire UMNO monkey leadership has suddenly made an U-turn to now supporting Perkasa.
barry - September 20, 2010 at 9:31 am
Honestly, I quite like this Nazri guy. This shoot from the hip “bald or crew cut” MAN is way above many of Umno/Bn cabinet ministers. Say what we will, he has a likeable face, not like some ministers where we wish we can spit on.
We wish there are many Malay leaders out there could lend him their voice of reason against the likes of Froggie and his organisation. In my humble opinion, what has that organisation done? Except to spew racial sentiments and blaming every Maniam and Ah Chong and issuing demands or ultimatum to PM, if his demands are not met?
sam - September 20, 2010 at 9:53 am
Well articulated reply to Awang Selamat’s column in Mingguan Malaysia. Since Datuk Seri Nazri affirmed…I will also..Yes,I am a Malaysian first and Chinese next !!!
Hidup Malaysia !!!
fairplay - September 20, 2010 at 10:01 am
yes, show your face lah Awang ! dont throw stone and hide your hands. For Nazri, he is a JANTAN!! and best of all he really a malaysian!! Malaysian 1st !
bukanawang - September 20, 2010 at 10:22 am
What’s with this Malaysian first and Malay second?? It is Malaysian. Period.
This comes with living in a country where we are reminded of who we are as a race in our everyday interactions with one another. First, we are required to have and to carry on our person at all times identity documents which state our race. What has race got to do with being Malaysian?? And then when you fill up forms for anything we are routinely asked for our race. It is high time we drop references to ethnicity altogether. In a country where racism has long been institutionalised it is not going to be easy. I agree but you have to start somewhere. It is time you guys refer to one another as just Malaysian. The change starts from within you.
I can’t imagine any American standing up to say he is first American and second Irish, Italian, German, Hispanic, Asian etc. We are reminded of our ethnicity when we look at menus in restaurants or when we decide to go ethnic in our choice of restaurants or choice of mother-in-law jokes.
Mr Bean - September 20, 2010 at 10:43 am
Mr Bean,
To you, this whole ridiculous debacle of ‘Malaysian first’ blah blah is a farce, but over here it is a very very serious thing, especially for the Malays, after the years and years of political and religious propanga drummed into their heads. For us non-Malays, we often wonder when we can truly shed off our non-Malay skin, with the day-in-day-out reminder that we are nothing but pendatangs to this land.
barry - September 20, 2010 at 11:19 am
“..we can truly shed off our non-Malay skin,..” Huh? Why? You’d die of exposure..
Bean, what about an African-American as a description of Obama or something of the same vein.
Menyalak-er - September 20, 2010 at 12:18 pm
I believe Americans from Africa and Americans from Asia and those from South America are referred to as African or Afro Americans, Asian Americans or Latino Americans? No?
sam - September 20, 2010 at 12:20 pm
A discussion of Man’s best friend (irregardless of religio-cultural sensitivities):
* Nazri? Yup, a prize winning pedigree Alastian. Loyalty is the key asset. Good guarding and teritorial instincts. Difficult to house train sometimes.
* Awang (tak lagi) Selamat? Someone called it a mongrel, but mixed breeds are tough, omnivorous, adaptable and can survive under extreme conditions. Mangy at times. Usually unvaccinated against ‘distemper’ and rabies.
Menyalak-er - September 20, 2010 at 12:54 pm
Is this what 1Malaysia is about? Then i sokong.

As long as PM Najib do not take concrete action against:
i) Redhuan Tee, Awang Selamat and editor of Utusan Melayu;
ii) that school principal from Kulai;
iii) his ex-political secretary;
iv) Ibrahim Ali al-Kataki and Perkasa;
v) Tun Apanama al-Kerala
for spewing up racist and seditious words, I will not ever accept him or his words.
____________
If Najib can deal decisively with (i) to (v), he can win hands down. Let him deal with (i) to (iv) first as they are easy to finish off, so that (v) will be peeing in his pants and can learn to shut up.–Din Merican.
Sentinel - September 20, 2010 at 2:11 pm
Nazri is a Jekyl and Hide character. In private he is a man of the world having a ball wherever he goes. But back home he is 100% UMNO and part of the looting and plundering team. So dont get BOWLED over by the SANDIWARA !!!. All the same it would be nice if his BOSS, Mr pink lips had uttered the same words that Nazri SPAT OUT at the one that hides behind the TRULY ORIGINAL Malay name of AWANG . Hope he is not a MAMAK constitutional Melayu !!!!
ken - September 20, 2010 at 2:16 pm
fully SOKONG that this guy is as loyal as a trained dog to its master of the day. Ditto a pat, a bone, a belly rub will be all my dog, Pepper, ever needed. Oh yeah, the occasional beef jerky is nice too.
The Jekyl & Hyde character? Suffice to say, I had the toast with him & his cronies, at the infamous Butterfly Bar in Betong once…”Cheers! Dato!” ~ and I was being civil from 1drinker to another. Yeah!
hurricaneMax - September 20, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Barry @ 11.19am. If you dont stop saying, I am Malaysian first and then *race* second, it will never end will it.Just say I am Malaysian, is that so hard to do?
Kathy - September 20, 2010 at 3:31 pm
Ken
You are right about Nazri’s Jekyll and Hyde personality.
Right now you have to take with a pinch of salt whatever he says.
Look at it deeply. He’s the only one really upfront about Perkasa.
The rest in UMNO are ambivalent including my beloved PM.
Never did Najib say UMNO must distance itself from Perkasa.
It was only Tengku Adnan speaking.
Take the cue from Kelantan UMNO which said it will not bar members from sipporting Perkasa.
Nazri will recpitulate if the tide turns against him. If not it will be the end of his political career.
Sayang Bangsa - September 20, 2010 at 3:51 pm
” Just say i am Malaysian, is that so hard to do ? ” – Kathy
Only Mahathir , ibrahim ali , muyuddin and maybe my good friend mohammad abd. would have a problem with this .
arokiasamy - September 20, 2010 at 3:52 pm
Kathy,
I am Malaysian, period. Who happens to be descended from parents who have Chinese blood. My children’s mother is your typical nyonya lady who is no different from a typical Malay lady, who happens to be a non-Muslim. Hard as I try, it is not easy to forget that I am of Chinese ethnicity from an evil and wicked regime which keeps bombarbing my head that I am pendatang, first and foremost, and that I am lucky that my ancestors were not chased away.
barry - September 20, 2010 at 3:54 pm
Hi Barry, I wasnt really saying it to you personally. Just picking up from your conversation. Then my advise is dont listen to those small minded people.I know its easier said than done but not all others prescribe to that. It is about politics to tear the people apart and create fear.
Kathy - September 20, 2010 at 4:49 pm
That is the way to proceed, speak, make a stand evenif, you are in the minority from UMNO, a very thin minority at that. Extend that thinking and approach to all fields of our lives and say it in the Cabinet and put your peers to shame. You remember as the whole nation does that the second in command in UMNO and the Govt. thinks race first and nationality second.
But I have to completely disagree with you that Mahathir is the best PM you served. That is your assessment; the majority of our people believe that he was the worst considering the irreparable damage he inflicted on the nation. Don’t you agree,
Nazri, that we are fragmented and divided now as never before in our history? Our best PMs, my humble view, were Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Abdul Razak, and Tun Hussein Onn who put Malaysia first, not Mahathir who thinks he is greatest and the noblest.
Sabahan - September 20, 2010 at 4:52 pm
” … (v) will be peeing in his pants and will learn to shut up . ” – din merican as appended to Sentinel’s comment dated sept 20, 2010 at 2.11 pm.
I think he is already peeing in his pants . His behaviour is all pretense – just putting on a brave front . Peeing in his pants is also doing it ” his way “.
salmiah hassan - September 20, 2010 at 5:59 pm
And Sabahan, i agree with you that Mr Peeing in his pants was the worst Prime Minister this country has had.
salmiah hassan - September 20, 2010 at 6:01 pm
If I ever agree that Mahathir is the best PM, then I would consider him the best to plunder the country of its riches and the most maverick PM Malaysia ever had.
Where in the world where an ex-PM can spew so much hatred and evil threats to its citizens that the country is thrown into disrepute and her rakyat confused as where the direction the country is heading ?
Why is Najib entertaining the clownish acts of this “has-been” when he should have spend more time adminstrating the country out of the financial and economic difficulties ?
Why are people giving this maverick ex-PM so much space to spin his nonsense when we can better bring the country to greater heights ?
mslam - September 20, 2010 at 6:11 pm
I too agree with sabahan about nazri’s dual personality. Perhaps if he keeps on with the Mr Hyde personality, Dr Jekyll might diasppear?
Zeus - September 20, 2010 at 7:10 pm
“Mr Bean,to you, this whole ridiculous debacle of ‘Malaysian first’ blah blah is a farce, but over here it is a very very serious thing, especially for the Malays …” barry
True. And all because the country’s constitution makes constant references to ‘race’. I don’t need to go there because it bores just to talk about it.
Where in the U.S. Constitution do you find the word ‘race’? Still racism is very much alive even in this beacon of democracy where it is illegal to discriminate only recently. You cannot of course legislate away racism. Over here with a much longer history there is still racism in the way we think though we do not want to acknowledge it and may be uncomfortable having to deal with it.
Tes, racism is very much alive. Try moving into an all white neighborhood and you’ll know what I mean. Slowly you find your white neighbors selling off their property one by one. Not because they don’t like you as a person but because they are blessed with the wisdom of knowing property prices in their area will slide as you see more non-whites moving into their neighborhood. Even here race is not completely irrelevant. There will never be an end to racism for as long as different looking species of human beings walk the earth.
But at least we do not like to be referred to as racists. We take great pains to remove any social stigma that comes from being labelled as racists. In Malaysia after some five decades, you guys have grown to be more conscious of your race and religion. That is like moving in the opposite direction. What shit of a nation-building is that??
Mr Bean - September 20, 2010 at 7:31 pm
Today we have the first Muslim U.S. Congressman. Do the Muslims in this country make him their poster boy? No. What has religion and race gotta do with anything. Once in a while there is mention of it.
Mr Bean - September 20, 2010 at 7:40 pm
Muhyiddin is a traitor to this country. He does not understand how multiracial Malaysia was born. This country is officially known as MALAYSIA worldwide and not Tanah Melayu. Tanah Melayu was long dead and gone. The Constitution states that Malaya together with Sabah and Sarawak (whose land masses were larger than Malaya and whose population were not Malay-majority) is MALAYSIA and recognizes the importance of every races to have a role in making Malaysia a viable country. The old feudalistic Tanah Melayu comprising of fragmented states in which the sultans and warlords were busy killing one another was abolished. The once powerful sultans were put in their proper places and they have to be aware of the multiracial interest of the country.
But UMNO unfortunately has aspired to continue with the old feudalistic order. They have made mediocracy into the new mantra of rights and privileges and demonized meritocracy as the domain of racism and evilness.
If Muhyiddin cannot prove that the Constitution is false then he should be deported to wherever he came from. Traitor!
