Najib’s Dilemma over UMNO-PERKASA Nexus

ANALYSIS

www.themalaysian insider.com (September 18, 2010)

Datuk Seri Najib Razak coyness in distancing his UMNO from the PERKASA movement yesterday can be traced back to one fact, that most of the some 300,000 in the Malay rights movement are also members of his party.

Therefore, the prime minister faltered in hammering the movement that some of his party colleagues say will cost them votes in the next general election. The UMNO president’s dilemma is simple, how do you criticise a movement made up primarily of your own members?

He isn’t alone in considering the conundrum. Over in the United States, Republican leaders are grappling with party conservatives who have joined the Tea Party Movement that set out as an anti-tax movement to turn into one that also appears to condone racism.

In many ways, PERKASA is to UMNO what the Tea Party Movement is to the Republicans, who lost the White House in the 2008 presidential elections.

While UMNO did not lose Putrajaya in Election 2008, it lost enough seats to prompt some soul-searching and a change of leadership that appeared to reach out to the non-Malays, prompting its Malay electorate to band together under the leadership of PERKASA chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali.

The independent Pasir Mas MP has turned PERKASA from a one-man band arguing to keep Malay rights and privileges to one urging the government not to rescind any affirmative-action policies and to ensure Malay supremacy (Ketuanan Melayu).

A recent snub by some UMNO officials, including its secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor, has brought a torrent of abuse from PERKASA and its supporters. Tengku Adnan, who is Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general, has said the ruling coalition will fight against Ibrahim in his political fortress Pasir Mas which he won in 2008 while on a PAS ticket.

Najib, however, did not appear to back Tengku Adnan and other party colleagues yesterday when he declared, “No, we do not want to be in conflict with any NGO.”

Najib went further to play down PERKASA’s significance as a pressure group, pointing out that as far as UMNO was concerned, PERKASA was just like any other NGO.“It is just like any other NGO. We have so many NGOs. There are times we can agree, and there are times we cannot agree,” he said.

However, the prime minister took pains to stress that at the end of the day, it was UMNO that was a part of the government. “And what UMNO says matters,” he said but refused later to explain whether he was referring to PERKASA.

Using the Malay rights platform, PEKRKASA has been a major obstacle in the way of Najib’s economic reforms which he has assured would not be at the expense of Bumiputras.

But PERKASA, backed by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is against any attempt to roll back the quotas associated with Malaysia’s affirmative action policies.

PERKASA? I do not know and I don't remember

Despite such conservative ideas, Ibrahim has taken great pains to declare that he is not racist and was willing to work with those from other races who subscribe to his thinking. His stance has won him a growing following made up of disparate groups that include businessmen and disenfranchised ex-servicemen and government servants.

In many ways, PERKASA is similar to what Matthew Continetti of The Weekly Standard described the Tea Party last June: “There is no single Tea Party. The name is an umbrella that encompasses many different groups. Under this umbrella, you’ll find everyone from the woolly fringe to Ron Paul supporters, from Americans for Prosperity to religious conservatives, independents, and citizens who never have been active in politics before. The umbrella is gigantic.”

In April last year, noted economist Paul Krugman wrote in a New York Times op-ed column that “the tea parties don’t represent a spontaneous outpouring of public sentiment. They’re AstroTurf (fake grass) events, manufactured by the usual suspects.”

Najib’s ambivalence towards PERKASA has made it difficult for his BN colleagues to convince the voters that the ruling coalition has initiated economic, educational and social reforms to be more inclusive and promote meritocracy.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has gone on record to say that he has not heard any UMNO leader promote Malay supremacy but the PERKASA rhetoric has drowned his opinion and unveiled the nexus between the movement and UMNO.

Najib’ reluctance to support his party colleagues reveal that he appears to still rely on the Malay community to win the next general election rather than take the gamble of inclusiveness and appeal to the non-Malay voters who might not support UMNO’s allies in the BN.

It is a move that has led him back to PERKASA, at the expense of being prime minister to all communities in Malaysia and getting their support for his New Economic Model (NEM).

  1. Wonder where is Mr Muyuddin’s voice and opinion while this debate rages. He’s been quite quiet , for a Malay first person.

  2. I often wondered what Mahathir would have done when he was Prime Minister with the likes of Ibrahim Ali and his racist agenda which went against Bangsa Malaysia as embodied in his Vision 2020. When I posed that thought to a close friend, he said that because someone like Mahathir would not tolerate dissent against his policies and his ” I did it my way approach”, Ibrahim Ali would have been in Kamunting under ISA by now.

As far for UMNO dissenters who are backing Ibrahim Ali’s PERKASA, Mahathir would not hesitate to make phone calls to the banks to instruct them to cut their credit lines or recall their loans. That would send these characters on their knees asking Mahathir for forgiveness, my friend said. The former prime minister is Machiavellian in his politiking.

So Najib should play this same hard ball politics, and all the so-called 300,000 UMNO members behind PERKASA would just toe the line and become good boys and girls again; PERKASA would just die and Ibrahim’s career in politics would end prematurely. And if Mahathir, the PERKASA patron, acts tough, Najib should instruct MACC to investigate him. Najib is today the most powerful man in our country. He should use that power in the national interest.–Din Merican

  3. dinobeano,

Once upon a time Pak Lah was the most powerful man in our country. HISTORY has it that he lost to the FORMER PRIME MINISTER.

So your argument that Najib is the most powerful of all in this country becoz he is the PM of Malaysia is only true on paper not on practice considering what had happened to Pak Lah under the mighty hand of the Grand Ole Man of Malaysia.

BTW, I am in total support of Mahathir before, now and in the future, Petronas twin towers, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, KLIA, F1 and others which were built to enrich his cronies….. the scandals involving the Judiciary, APs, Bank Bumiputra, Perwaja and lately PKFZ and MAS …….
    _________
Please don’t compare Najib to Badawi. The former is a class above his predecessor. But Najib is overcautious in the exercise of the powers of his office; and Mahathir, on the other hand, is reckless. Well, you can support whoever you like. It is your choice. I respect that. –Din Merican

  4. Umno-Perkasa conundrum? A study in parasitology. The parasite by definition feeds of its host. Without external intervention, the host expires or exsanguinates.
Recommended treatment? Not Tea nor other herbal cures. Testosterone therapy might be helpful, but surgical excision and amputation as suggested by Din (and friend) most efficacious. However the question of “cojones” or lack of, begs an answer.

  5. Indeed cannot compare Najib with Badawi, and let alone expecting him to take a stand against Tun M. Najib borrowed a mandate from Badawi while Badawi was handed power formally by Tun M.

To be fair though Tun M in his early days as PM he was also very cautious. He got to be bolder after he won the 2nd general election that he helmet the government. Having said that the other attributes in the personality of Tun M are no in Najib.

And to make things worst for Najib those issues like Altantuya, the c-4 used in disposing her body otherwise should be in the safe care of the government ministry of defense or the armed forces, submarine commissions of Euro 114 million allegedly associated with that unexplained murder, theft of fighter aircraft engines, malaise in our National economy, big budget deficit, the over-dependence in oil revenue, and what Minister Idris Jala said our Nation would go bankrupt by 2019 and which despite Najib’s denial of the scenario no actions apparently has been taken against Idris Jala for making such comment, and of course Perkasa, and many more but for want of space to set them out.

All these are heavy baggage to Najib unlike Tun M or indeed Badawi who displayed a Mr. Nice PM appearance.

My guts feeling is that Najib would shine out and will be loved by all Malaysians if he does it like the current president of South Africa. Before he became President his case with all the allegations thrown to it were put before the Court. The court then found those allegations unproven and declared him innocent of them.

The other thing he needed to do to display that he is a true 1Malaysia PM is he must be within the law like everybody else. He must not use government apparatus to support political agendas or apply the same against whom he perceived as his political enemies. The general perception here is that he is not, and that he is too late to change things to his favour now.

  6. Ibrahim will NEVER win in Kelantan in his Pasir Mas saa. Firstly, he begged from TG Nik Aziz and to Anwar Ibrahim to stand in Pasir Mas as an independent. It will be payback time from PAS. Secondly, no UMNO MP/candidate will give way to him to contest.

Ibrahim Ali will not survive in the next election given his seat is in Kelantan. You can bet on it.

  7. In the United States there is now talk of the tea party movement changing the Republican Party. But there is also talk of the tea party movement being changed by the Republican party.

Perkasa looks set to change UMNO. Just as UMNO will change followers of Perkasa.

  8. Ilham, do you sleep well at night? Din said you’re posting from Singapore? Wonder why you are so anti-Anwar, being a Singaporean? You must be a paid cyber trooper then since as a Singaporean, there isn’t anything for you to be angry about Anwar Ibrahim or any politician in Malaysia, for that matter?

Listen, you look silly posting stupid angry statements like this and you are actually a disgrace to yourself. Why not go visit some psychiatrist or perhaps have a talk with your Imam or something, I think you need help.

You mentioned previously that you will not rest when your race and religion”diporakperandakan”? So, in this blog today, I notice there isn’t anything… so what set off your fuse?

  9. PR should be more worried than anyone else in any action being taken against Ibrahim Ali and Mahathir. The surest way for Najib to knock out PR and win the next election – in my view – is for him to lock up these two “trouble makers” as the tide will decidedly swing in his favour with a majority of Malaysians supporting his bold move. He will be killing two birds with one stone.

  10. The future of the nation is in the hands of the Malays. We the minorities can help only when the Malays decide that our future are interlinked and united we shall prosper, divided we shall fall. And the road forward looks bleak…..

  11. Salaam Eid Mubarak Abg Din,,

Why is everybody so paranoid of Perkasa… for God’s sake, Perkasa is only a pressure group. The only logical reason they fear Perkasa because of their insecurity… believe me, I have won many battle against these insecure people including Pak Lah pre, during, pre, and post BERSIH days.

Btw, I was there when Tok Him WHACKED Najib senseless during the MPM closing and soon ,we shall know whether Najib is insecure, inconsistent or incompetent.

Let it be known, Perkasa is not anti Chinese or anti Indian but we are definitely anti Liberal Malays.

P.S: Panjihitam is not anti Govt , just anti Incompetent Govt.

  12. PERKASA is like Ku Klux Khan which fight for white supermecy in US and Nation of Islam which fight for Black supermacy. The end result the American move forward and ignore this two organisation. Finally they elected Obama as US President.

I think PERKASA will die a natural death come next election.UMNO and Najib try to balance the two need.To please the Malay who is the core suppoter of UMNO and The Non malay who suddenly realise they have the power to change Malaysia political landscape. No an easy task for Najib to please this two group.

  13. PAS is holding its counsel right now and to say less about Perkasa to let UMNO deal with those UMNO members who formed the majority in Perkasa and hoping that UMNO is linked tightly to Perkasa up to the next GE. PAS is keeping its ammunition to target Ibrahim Ali in his Pasir Mas seat in Kelantan when the time comes, that is, when the election is called.

  14. “The future of the nation is in the hands of the Malays. We the minorities can help … ” James

‘Ceteris paribus’ like my economics professor Dr Yip Yat Hoong would say.

If Malays are split right down the middle, then Chinese votes could become swing votes. The best hope is for a divided Malay electorate and a united Chinese electorate.

  15. Perkasa is PAS’s fix deposit to win non Malay votes away from UMNO across the country in the next GE. Najib is very vulnerable in the next GE if he cannot extricate UMNO from Perkasa. Truth and perception cannot be erased because the majority of Perkasa members are UMNO and UMNO Youth members.

PAS already has the partial list of Perkasa membership and it is being cross check with UMNO membership list to be used in the campaign for the next election.

  16. Ibrahim Ali is to Perkasa like Sarah Palin is to the tea party movement in the U.S. They are cheer leaders. One is for UMNO right wing conservatives and the other for the base of the Republican Party.

  17. Mongkut Bean,
How can you compare Sarah Palin to the mongrel looking Ibrahim Ali. No comparison, I’d take Sarah Palin anytime, cos I can see Russia from my doorstep.

Ibrahim Ali is an idiot and is only trying to prop up his dying political career. Like a drowning man he will grab onto anything to stay afloat. Coming from the Malay heartland the best tool is Malay agenda.

  18. “I’d take Sarah Palin anytime, cos I can see Russia from my doorstep” semper fi

I thought you had wanted to take Sarah Palin because you could see up her skirt? But anyway the bitch is a grandma. You don’t want to mess with grandmas.

  19. Nothing wrong with grandmas, Bean. I’ve grandma beside me all the time. The one at the backseat of my Cooper S is a soon-to-be grandma too. They make great companions.

  20. From a Freshie Queen in ’74 to a grandma in 2010? You’re 36 years too late, Tok Cik! But today there’s viagra for women. So that should take care of it. Changing to new absorbers may not be a waste of money after all.

  21. In Malaysia, political statements from Barisan Nasional are murky, mind-boggling and misleading. It is not as simple as “what you see is what you get”, in this case what you hear is not what it is. No wonder most people find the Malaysian political scene tiresome. It is akin to a long serial drama or soap opera with no end in sight as there is always a twist, double twist or even a triple somersault in every plot, sub-plot and plot within a plot.

  22. S.B ..you emphatise with Mr shit, shit shit, shit Ibrahim . never knew you are equally shity !!!

  23. Should Ibrahim stand again then just put a donkey and that donkey will win hands down. It will be better for Ibrahim Ali to donate his money to the needful then to say goodbye to his deposit.

  24. What deposit are you guys talking about?? The only deposit that matters that is of interest to Tok Cik would be when he is in the back seat of his Cooper S. As usual there is no interest in premature withdrawals.

  25. jibby will let it boil & simmer and then he, as the most powerful man now, will emerge and shut down perkasa. The minority races will be happy for this action and maybe even let jibby & 1malaysia plan pass Go and collect rm200.

if that panned out, jibby must get macc to investigate apanama..and betcha *poof* all the umno, mca, mic racists will suddenly be overnite 1Malaysian. But i wont hold my breath just yet.
