DAP takes Sibu

DAP takes Sibu
SIBU, May 16 — The DAP pulled off a surprise win in the Sibu by-election today, defeating Barisan
Nasional’s (BN) SUPP by 398 votes in a hard fought race, official results show.
BN had earlier been expected to retain its Sarawak stronghold but lost despite the best efforts of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The Sibu vote is seen as a bellwether for the Sarawak state elections which must be called by next year.
Today’s result is significant in that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has snapped a streak of successive defeats to BN in recent by-elections. The count now is 8-3 in favour of PR in terms of wins in by-elections held since Election 2008.
Today’s result is also a setback for Najib who had personally campaigned for BN and had placed his own reputation on the line.
Najib has been counting on Sabah and Sarawak as BN’s fixed deposit, but today’s result shows a major swing from 2008 when BN won the seat by more than 3,000 votes.
Today’s result also raises two thorny issues — how to deal with the Tan Sri Taib Mahmud factor and whether to push for state polls which sources say had been slated for October this year.
hank you to the people of Sibu for putting PM Najis’s grand scheme of regaining their 2/3 majority 2 steps backwards
Kudos to the Chinese for voting for the sake of the country’s future
As a Muslim myself, THE WAY I SEE IT,the Chinese of both Hulu Selangor and Sibu are more Muslim than actual Muslim for voting for long term benefits (good governance, transparency) rather than short term monetary benefits
Praise to Allah for this victory to the rakyat

Frank - May 17, 2010 at 1:07 am
My only prayer is that this win by Pakatan Rakyat will be among the steps to make our beloved country a nation with a viable TWO PARTY SYSTEM.
The voters in Sarawak have shown us in Peninsular Malaysia the way to go forward, despite the $$$, the promises, the bribes, and the kitchen thrown by Najib to the Sibu voters.
Sarawakians, in particular the Sibu Foochow Chinese Malaysians have shown to Malaysians, especially to our Malay pakciks and makciks, you don’t have to succumb to $$$ to sell your soul to the devil.
As Muslims, we not only should not condone gambling and alcohol, but we should shun bribery and corrupt practices.

This Sayang bangsa (bodoh punya anak Melayu otak tak berisi) quotes the same figures of margin win by BN as that Bitch-on-heat (Fatimah Zuhri) on Terence Netto’s blog who go round purring “my dear and baby” to the PR supporters there.

Pakatan Rakyat still has a lot of work cut out to win over the rural folks in East Malaysia and especially the rural Malay heartland in Peninsular Malaysia.
For our rural Malay heartland, both PAS and PKR have a lot of work to do…. to assure them their interest and livelihood will be looked after better than this racist UMNO-BN Govt and that their problems have NOTHING to do with race.
That as Malays, our pakciks and makciks can be as competitive and successful as any other Malaysian, Chinese or Indians, if given the necessary tools and support without having to fall for the UNTUK BANGSA DAN AGAMA nonsense pedalled by UMNO and Perkasa.
They can be a proud Malay without having to be reminded that they are Malays or having to be fire-walled by Article 153 of the Federal Constitution.
Our pakciks and makciks should be made aware that a STRONG Opposition is to THEIR advantage and their support to make the Opposition parties strong will go a long way to get the best out of our govt, whether it is a PR-Govt or BN-Govt.

My prediction has come true. Jibby has learned his lesson that the Foochows in Sibu are no Felda settlers who can be bought over with a fistful of ringgit. Pinkie lips will now retreat to a corner with fatty Mah Che Chot to comfort his frayed ego.
Tok Cik - May 17, 2010 at 7:22 am
Tok Chik:
The only thing that Najib has learnt is probably that he has to spend more than RM 100 million to win an election. Less than that will not cut it as is the case here in Sibu.
didi - May 17, 2010 at 8:09 am
This is a great win for PR but let’s not take our celebrations too far because there is still a lot that the coalition has to do before voters can be convinced that it is serious about our country. If, despite the infighting and all those crossovers, PR is still able to carry off such a victory it shows how much Malaysians want change and that not all can be “bought” with “goodies”. The good folk of SIBU have shown us the way…
For PR the message is clear : GET SERIOUS.
Isa Manteqi - May 17, 2010 at 8:25 am
What a shocker.
A rather low turn-out may be the cause of this. Obviously many ibans and Melanau Malays chose to stay home. They are the bastion of BN in Sarawak.
The 232 independent votes and the 208 rejected postal votes could have been BN’s gain.
So there’s no phantom votes or rigging or cheating finally yeah.
As early as 9pm, pro-PKR bloggers have already been on the defensive by ciiing the above tired accusations.
On hindsight, it’s not really surprising because Sarawak has never seen the imported racists campaign brought by PKR. They have corrupted the least racists people with racist issues like Allah, burning of churches and Chinese education.
Congrats BN for being a good sport – accepting the loss wih good grace..
Sayang bangsa - May 17, 2010 at 9:45 am
In spite of the odds stacking against it, Pakatan prevailed. This is a good sign that the BN fixed deposits are transferable and the people of the state want it back. This win will be a catalyst for Sabah and Sarawak to dare to change.
This election showed that Pakatan is very weak in the rural areas. The Dayaks, in spite of being treated shabbily by the BN is still unyielding in their support for them. The only way to gain their support is to work through the Dayak parties like SNAP. And put more Dayaks in PKR as well. Thanks to Ibrahim Ali and the religious bigots, the Chinese has move in droves to the opposition as shown in Hulu Selangor and now Sibu.
imwatchingu - May 17, 2010 at 9:48 am
Yeah, the missing link is the Ibans, especially those in the interior. Here the only news they get is from the state radio network which is too BN biased. They need to be told that the white-haired rajah, who drives around in a sliver Rolls Royce, is not their Savior but their mortal enemy out to suck them dry. This has to be put across in the most subtle of ways.
SNAP has to be revitalised and some of the more radical Iban leaders need to come to the forefront of Sarawak politics. But the community is fractious and getting them together is problematic. But nothing is impossible if some form of compromise is worked out.
There’s no problem with the Chinese but the Ibans are something else. They are easily swayed and tempted just like the Felda settlers of Hulu Selangor.
The legendary Ubong who fought on the side of the Parakus during the Communist uprising of the 60s right to the early 80s was a virtual prisoner in the Communist hands but succumbed to bribes. He surrendered in 1983 and was rewarded with money, land and a young bride, courtesy of the BN Government.
PR has to learn how an Iban mind works.

So right. It is A DAP victory.
The DAP is now the dominant force.
The PKR is slowly dying which is aptly described by Muhyiddin as Parti Kian Runtuh.

As RPK said, Ibrahim Ali followed instructions well from PR leadership and played his role as a Trojan Horse in BN-UMNO very well.It went according to script.
Perkasa and UMNO bought wholesale. If not for the good work done by Ibrahim Ali, it would have been hard for DAP to convince the Chinese to vote for Pakatan/DAP.

Back to the drawing board for UMNO-BN. Is Pehin Sri Taib Mahmud a political liability? The man just won’t quit. He wants to be the next Governor with a weak Chief Minister like Alfred Jabu or Adenan Satim. Abang Johari, a Malay, is too strong a leader and could be a threat to the interest of Cahaya Mata Holdings and Taib’s financial empire. Interesting days ahead for Sarawak politics.
The politics there is too complicated because it is based on the cult of personality. Najib tried hard to win in Sibu, but odds were against him at this point in time because the Chinese community is with DAP which promises change and they are not with Taib. SUPP is just a stooge.–Din Merican

Yes Sayang Bangsa, if only UMNO has a bit of humanism and compassion for the other races, there will be 1Malaysia for all, not 1Malaysia for UMNO, and DAP will have no place in Malaysian politics. This politics of race brings out the worst in all of us. Sayang Bangsa epitomizes the racial divide amongst us, ie perpetuating the interests of race has overcome the interests of our country. These are the kind of people we should move to Pulau Jerejak.

Sayang Bangsa,
The Ibans suffered more and far worst under BN as they have to see that their NCR land were grabbed by BN landlord and sold to the rich towkays for a sum. The Ibans were left landless in their dilapidated longhouse.
Yes, Federal BN politicians were shocked when they visited the longhouses in the interior and found that some do not have water supply and some longhouse had to depend solely on water transport.
Also, now the PM and DPM realise that the flood in Sibu is recurrent incident. They made promises of RM 5 million and the DPM even mentioned billion to be utilised for flood mitigation.
Do you know how much the people of Sibu suffered once there is a flood. BN was in control of Sibu since Malaysia attained independence and except for one term, the BN lawmakers had been in power in Sibu.
Sadly, there was not even a finger lifted by these BN YBs and ADUNs to mitigate the floods.

What choice has Muhyiddin have. Burn all the votes and declare BN the winner?
Good grace means Muhyiddin should have stayed back in Sibu, congratulate the winner of the election and then only fly back to Kuala Lumpur. That is what we call “good grace” or good sportsmanship in accepting a loss, not hurrying back to the airport fly back to KL once the inevitable is about to happen.
People like you don’t know the meaning of “good grace”, or perhaps you want to “angkat telog” of Najib and Muhyiddin by saying that… wrong choice of words to praise.

This is what we call a Prime Minister of a ONE PARTY STATE…. TAXPAYERS money to buy votes for a POLITICAL PARTY to win an election.
It is NOT taxpayers money and in all probability Najib’s trip and Muhyiddin’s trip to Sibu is paid by taxpayers instead of through UMNO funds.
Total abuse of the system of democracy in the country and ultra vires to the Election laws and the Federal Constitution. And that is what you get for entrenching a ONE PARTY STATE. It is reminiscent of a tactic of a Communist State.
This video clip will go down in Malaysian history as the most blatant form of bribery by a sitting PRIME MINISTER to buy votes using TAXPAYERS money in an election campaign.

This observation (read below) by a writer in Harakah caught my attention. Now, if it is true that more Malays-Melanau have voted for the DAP candidate in this by-election than in 2008, that is a good sign that we are indeed moving forward and away from race- based politics.
Perhaps, the vote is for the candidate, Wong Ho Leng,(rather than the party, DAP) who political observers were seen by Sibu voters as someone who had been consistently fighting on the side of the poor and the marginalised in Sarawak. The new Sibu MP is someone akin to Lim Guan Eng (but not sure he would willingly go to prison or not for somebody’s behalf on a moral principle as Guan Eng did for a young Malay girl against an UMNO warlord) .
All the same, even after over two years since the March 2008 tsunami, if voting is not on racial lines, that is a good sign. There is still hope that political tsunami of 2008 is not in vain.
Political observers credit that to the hardwork of the foot soldiers of PAS and the quick assemble of PAS’s grassroot machinery into the Sibu rural areas to work for DAP.

Sayang Bangsa,
I served in Sarawak for many many years and I feel I can speak with a certain measure of authority about the people and the country.
Sarawakians are by nature peace-loving people who don’t normally behave the way we from the peninsula do. That explains why the Sibu by-election was trouble-free.
Although laid-back the people are more tolerant of others regardless of one’s race and belief. They don’t speak of Ketuanan Melayu or Ketuanan Iban. The social ills that have crept into their society are caused by us – West Malaysians.
There’s plenty we can learn from them. Umno’s brand of politics will do more harm than good for these gentle people. And that’s the sad truth.

It is a little too early isn’t it i.e. to rule out anything? But then if you are the party openly flouting election law, would you take the matter to court? “Can we have an understanding?” What is that all about?
But then it is a wafer thin victory. Or is it?? For BN this is only a by-election and it changes nothing for them. It doesn’t bring the state government down. But it might be a precursor. So they just might challenge the result. I don’t think they would though. It would be a lot easier for them to manipulate the results. It is safe to assume that they did What happened??

Nope, no suing. Najib has moved on. He’s admitted old methods used in BN campaign.
But Uncle Lim wants an inquiry (luckily not royal commission of inquiry) to look into the delay of the result announcement.
EC has clarified it was the DAP people who held back the counted postal ballot votes which caused the delay. Police had been called in to help control the situation the EC boss described as the first he encountered.

“Congrats BN for being a good sport – accepting the loss wih good grace”.. – Sayang bangsa.
Yes indeed, reluctantly accepted the loss after being exhausted with whatever tricks and tactics available to deny DAP/PR’s of their victory at the final and crucial moment.
If not for the sudden change in the voters turnout % i.e from 59.8% (as it was earlier confirmed by the EC chief ) to 70%, hours later in the night, DAP/PR would have won with a substantially bigger majority of votes. Where this extra 10% of votes must have come from at the last minute and that couldn’t simply be construed a technical mistake or a mathematical error.
Why the delay, yes the DAP candidate objected to certain discrepancies in the total postal votes figures, but that shouldn’t be the excuse for delaying the announcement for more than two hours. Wouldn’t it be due to something more important than that.
