MP Wee Chee Keong: His moves are being watched by the media

Wide Speculation on Outspoken and Combative Wangsa Maju MP Wee Chee Keong

by Hazlan Zakaria (April 21, 2010)

Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong has refused to comment on a rumour that he will be the next to leave PKR, which has been wracked by a string of defections since February.

The Combative MP Wee Chee Keong

Neither confirming nor denying the speculation, he told reporters to report what they supposedly know.“You know everything. Why do you need to ask? You know better, why don’t you publish first? Why do you need me?” he said late yesterday, when cornered in the MPs lounge after a day-long game of cat-and-mouse around Parliament House.

He had, however, told the Chinese media earlier in the day that even if he wants to quit PKR, he would do so in his own time and not based on the whims of ‘little Napoleons’.

Wee then launched an offensive against the new media, which he labelled as “irresponsible”. “I will only talk to certain media and not others because they are irresponsible,” he said.

He also dismissed certain online news portals as unreliable because “they will just twist my words… they will just change B to A and A to B”.

s manikavasagam 02PKR’s Kapar parliamentarian S Manickavasagam (right), speaking at a ceramah in Ampang Pecah yesterday, fanned the embers of speculation by claiming that one more MP is expected to leave the party.

‘Exit by other means’

A source speculated that Wee has probably decided on his departure, but that he is looking for a “respectable” way out. “Wee wants to be booted out of PKR so that he does not appear to be a party-jumper and will not be called a katak (frog),” said the source.

Wee will be closely watched by party colleagues on Thursday, when a motion will be filed in the Dewan Rakyat to refer Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to the Rights and Privileges Committee.

If Wee speaks against the party and its de facto leader, he would create enough heat to have himself removed without having to make the decision to quit.

Wee, a former Bukit Bintang MP when he was in DAP, left the party to form the Malaysian Democratic Party (MDP).At the 2008 general elections, he ran under the PKR banner and won the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat.

  1. I interact with Wee Chee Keong socially and in Parliament. Whenever we meet and talk, we discuss many issues from the economy, good governance, civil society, environment and social policy, national security and politics.

What is never known is that Wee never left DAP, but was sacked for not showing affections to the party leader. He could not join Parti KeADILan because then Deputy President, Dr. Chandra Muzaffar had announced that no ex-DAP members can join. Rather than join Barisan Nasional, he and his ex-DAP colleagues formed MDP. In 2008, Wee was invited by Anwar Ibrahim to be a PKR candidate for Wangsa Maju Parliamentary constituency.

I find him to be a very intelligent and sensitive man with some strong positions on the economy (free market and positive affirmative action), politics (democracy and human right), good governance (especially on corruption) and the environment. I think he is much misunderstood politician, especially by some of his PKR colleagues.

I will be surprised if he crosses over. It would be in his interest to remain in PKR and become its fervent critic. But then, it depends on how he is treated from here on. The party might take disciplinary action against him if he continues to speak out of turn.If that happens, he will probably rethink his position. As a democrat, he would consult his constituents before he makes any major move. –Din Merican

  2. Din,
Frankly, I don’t really have much respect to Mr Wee. As far as I am concerned, he’s a reject from DAP. Yes, he’s his fair reasons himself but what about Teng Chang Khim then. Teng too was a fervent critic of DAP top echolen
I think I better stop here as it’s eating into my working hours. To cut the whole thing short, I don’t really trust him. DAP has fair share of critics. Bou Cheng Hau, Teng & even the former Secretary General. None of them are as vindictive as he’s

  3. From public perception he is ungrateful, selfish and untrustworthy politician.

He would not have won the Wangsa Maju MP seat if another candidate from DAP/PAS/PKR stood there. Who’s MDP?????

  4. He also interact with Rocky, Shamsul, Rusdi Mustapha at NPC. They kutuk him for being with PKR. Seems to me like he has to kowtow to them. Though he is an MP but the way he carries himself around them like he has no weight. Or maybe they know some skeletons about him.

This is what I believe, if he really wants to champion the cause then he should 1st give DSAI some face. Be a team player. Go trash it out with him and the other higher ups in PKR. If he is not happy after that then do the right thing. Leave! If he joins BN or support BN as an independent then better he also kiss TPM’s hand and be a 2nd class citizen to the tune of UMNO and PERKASA.

  5. Obviously, we cannot agree with each other about MP Wee. I will go along with Din’s assessment of the man.

MP Wee was nominated by PKR to stand under their banner in 2008 because he has the experience, qualifications and character to represent them and he delivered.

There is no question of gratitude since he used his own resources to wage a successful campaign. Like other nominees of PKR, he received little help from the party. In stead of being grateful to him, PKR leadership is snubbing him because they have decided that he is to be sidelined for reasons best known to certain members of Anwar Ibrahim’s inner circle.

Some people in PKR tell me that Anwar uses people and takes loyalty for granted. The PKR Ketua Umum is only interested in becoming Prime Minister. He is so obsessed with that goal that he does not realise that he is losing his credibility and heading into the twilight zone.

  6. Wee Choo Keong needs UMNO’s $$$$$ to fix some of his personal problems and difficulties.

PKR does not have that kind of money nor would want to entertain such ideas.

Wee Choo Keong has too much baggage and PKR has its own problems to worry about one man’s seat in Parliament.

If Wee Choo Keong wants to frog ( he can’t join UMNO unless he has cut the half to one inch of his exhaust pipe) to UMNO. He can join MCA to be with the porn-star President of MCA. They will make a good pair except Wee Choo Keong doesn’t have to go to the hotel.

  7. The PKR Ketua Umum is only interested in becoming Prime Minister.- Ahmad Naim

That is call ambition. Don’t you teach your children to have high goals and ambitions. American kids are taught they should not be afraid to have ambition to become the President of United States.

People like you who denigrate others with ambition are the cause why many in the Malay heartland are backward and shies away from being at their best. I call people like you as “mediocres” and not only that you also want others to be mediocres.

Anwar had been a Deputy Prime Minister. So what is wrong if his ambition is to be PM and the rest has no problems about except people like who are UMNO supporters feel uncomfortable about it. Of course, YOU don’t like it b

  8. continuation…

…because you an UMNO member and supporter.

No brainer point of view from you…. AGAIN!!!!

  9. Wee Choo Keong picked the cue from Fairuz Khairuddin, the PKR frog from Penang who went to join UMNO.

In less than 3 months after joining UMNO, Fairuz who had difficulty meeting his household expenses while he was with PKR, could pay off, in one lump sum straight cash, RM109,000 for the Mercedes Benz otherwise the Penang State Govt would reclaim it.

I say to Wee Choo Keong, go for it. After all what is maruah when UMNO wants to buy your soul.Once you join politics and had been frogging in and out of DAP, despite being a Chinese Kelantanese from Kg Cina Kota Bahru, you have already put your maruah and soul for sale long ago.

Take UMNO $$$ and frog out of PKR, otherwise your children will call you a coward and you will regret for the rest of your life. As for your integrity, you don’t have to go to Lake Club to have your dinner. Rocky Bru and the Najib- asslicker Rusdi Mustapha aka Barking Magpie and Bigdog can always invite you to their homes for dinner.

Everybody has a price, even PKR, PAS and DAP members. Hee the frog not only got RM24 million from UMNO but also a datukship from the Sultan of Perak. They can have funereal rites for Hee, as far as the Malays are concerned, she is a datuk, just like that Bollywood star, Shahrukh Khan. Shahrukh Khan and Hee the frog are of SAME status as far as Malays are concerned.

Go for it, Wee Choo Keong, take the money to fix your personal problems as Fairuz Khairuddin does, and frog out before you are sacked, which is more embarrassing.

  10. Well Din, Oscar Wilde said this: “True friends stab you in the front.” But i doubt YB Wee will even do that.
To me, he is not about selflessness and beyond the call of duty. He is about ‘conveniences’. While he rails against ‘lil Napoleans’ he is tyrannical in his own belief system; and bears old grudges.
Being erudite and of high intellect is of little use if not used with a modicum of humility.

  11. First of all Wee was never a PKR man. He asked to stand for election under PKR as Ibrahim Ali was under Pas. He was all the while an ungrateful man and against hierarchy !

  12. all these problems with frogs happened because 308 tsunami was so unexpected. had pakatan won less than one third majority, and the number of states wrested from bn were not significant, there would be only low price tags for froggies. but, bn shaken, and in its current position would pay high prices to buy. but, then again, why rm24 million for hee? is that really the actual price? you would have thought 5 or 10 million could have done the job? no?

  13. “..rm24 million for hee?”
How was that figure derived at, klik? No one really knows. If you add on the ‘cost’ of that hee-hee datukship it would probaly be more. This poor creature’s ‘soul’ can be measured materially..

  14. Bro

I would like to apply International Accounting Standard 69 to Wee Choo Keong i.e. IAS 69 – FOFO!!

This is the scumbag who stood for election using on PKR/Pakatan’s apparatus and then started backstabbing with the as of today yet unsubstantiated ‘underworld has infiltrated DAP” etc., which inexplicably lead to Teoh Boon Hock’s death!!

Now he’s sleeping with UMNO and gaji buta 2 “lawatan sambil belajar” trips to USA courtesy of the Taxpayer and Najib/UMNO!!

RPK has implied that WCK is in financial trouble supporting post marital extra-curricular activities!! Whatever it is, let’s ask ourselves if WCK has done anything tangible for those who voted for him?

Are there worse scumbags and traitors than these?

  15. It seems that your readers are not following the reports on the matter in the news portal.

I have been following and I discovered that they kept on speculating with a definite slants to damage Wee. First, the Malaysiakini said he was leaving together with the 3 law makers resigned from PKR. That didn’t happen then another speculation that he will resign on nomination day for Hulu Selangor. Another false statement. Then a totally new speculation, which was a total switch, stating by Malaysiakini that he will engineer his exit. All the wild speculation based on sources in PKR and then unidentified sources.

Is this responsible journalism or that Malaysiakini has an political agenda?? I have been observing the reporting by Malaysiakini, it sounded like a Pakatan news portal. There is no independent in its reporting. Always with an obvious slant to favour Anwar and his gang.

I have lost faith in such journalism. I hope that you will not succumb such standard of journalism and I know you will not do it in the way Malaysiakini did.

I hope that Wee will give his comments over this.

  16. I have lost faith in such journalism. - Lam

I strongly advise you should read NST, Star and Malay Mail. Their reporting should suit your taste of journalism.

I like the way the nasi lemak sellers use these newspapers. While folks like you will read NST or Star with your breakfast, these makciks and pakciks will use NST and Star as kertas-bungkus.

  17. Wee lost his deposit in 2004 GE for Bukit Bintang parliamentary seat.He polled 1107 votes out of 39640 cast votes .

If he had contest on his MDP ticket , he would have lost his deposit for Wangsa Maju too. He definitely owed his MP seat to PKR.

  18. WCK, The DRUNKEN snake of wangsa maju,
I was reliably informed that the voters of wangsa maju plan to give you
a trashing by way of having a picketing session in dana kota and WM section 2, to demand that you stay put in PKR and if you decide to frog, then you MUST RESIGN from being
an MP so that a by- election can take place.
The voters in WM DID NOT VOTE FOR YOU as WCK BUT FOR PKR AS A PARTY and you as its representative. PERIOD.
You WCK as an elected MP in WM is never to be seen or heard.

You may expect the picket anytime in the near future.
Behave like an MP for the ppl, by the ppl and of the ppl.
