Tunku Aziz comments on Malaysia-US Relations and Israel

April 18, 2010

The Cost of Malaysia-US Relations

by Senator Tunku Abdul Aziz*

And so it has finally happened. What a great honour for Malaysia. Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the prime minister of 1 Malaysia fame, was thrown a few crumbs, a few brief moments to savour, exchanging pleasantries with US President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit.

Naturally, it was not quite the same as being driven down Pennsylvania Avenue to be welcomed at the portal of the White House, but I am being churlish as usual where Najib is concerned. Najib did get to see Obama via the tradesman’s entrance.

What irks me about this non-event meeting is that we had to resort to employing a very expensive public relations firm, for which read grubby Washington lobbyists, for close to US$25 million (RM80 million), give or take a million dollar here and there. Small change I suppose when it is not your hard-earned money.

Mahathir’s courtship of vilest and violent regimes in Africa

We maintain, for a small country, far too many embassies, all the result of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s megalomaniac years when he developed a special interest in trafficking with some of the vilest and most violent regimes particularly in North and Sub-Saharan Africa that others would not have touched with a long barge pole. For maverick Mahathir, that was his regular breakfast fare.

Maintaining diplomatic missions abroad requires a huge budget, and ours in Washington DC must cost us an arm and a leg. So Malaysian taxpayers have every right to expect to get value for money, especially when we were assured by Prime Minister Najib that his choice of our ambassador to the US was based on the gentleman’s credentials, whatever those might be.

One of his qualifications, so we were told, was that he had developed extensive networking, Washington DC style, into a fine art, and could be reasonably expected to pave the way for getting Malaysia into the inside track. Our man in DC could not, on this occasion, even arrange a fleeting “hello and goodbye” meeting without resorting, in the time-honoured Malaysian culture of corruption, to that offensive practice euphemistically referred to as “cheque book diplomacy”.

The prime minister could not have picked a better candidate for the job, and I wonder if there would ever be an end to the perceived sleaziness, rightly or wrongly, that has come to be associated with Najib. For the all our sakes, the prime minister has to be a little more circumspect and open in his dealings.

On Iran, Nuclear Weapons and Global Security

What has this visit achieved for the money and time expended? A photo opportunity at most for Najib, but for Malaysia, toeing submissively the American-Israeli policy against Iran. We decried Junior Bush’s attack on Iraq because we were not convinced that the claimed weapons of mass destruction really existed. Why are we so quick off the mark this time to believe the Israeli-inspired conspiracy against Iran? Where is the incontrovertible evidence that Iran is building nuclear weapons? What have we done to urge the Americans to dismantle Israeli nuclear warheads?

On this issue, there has to be a great deal of soul-searching to be done on our part if we are to remain true to our sense of justice and if we wish enhance our standing among the morally decent nations of the world. I am not suggesting that we should oppose every American policy that impacts on global peace and security. We have to resist the temptation, however, of living in each other’s pockets in our relations whether with mighty America or pinhead Singapore.

Not against Israel

I am not against Israel, per se. I admire the energy of the country and its people, many of whom are friends of mine. With one, I went on two holidays, shared kosher food and enjoyed many hilarious moments. They are as honest and decent as the rest of humanity, and they, like us, want the best for their country and the Jewish people.

That having been said, anyone familiar with the workings of the American system on the international policy level will realise that no matter how often you meet Obama, nothing will happen unless the very powerful pro-Jewish congressional committees want it to happen.

Less Costly to recognise Israel

Rather than swimming in circles in the murky Potomac inhabited by totally disreputable money-grabbing grey-suited lobbyists just to pay homage to the White House, it would be easier and a great deal less costly to recognise, yes, recognise Israel.

It is there; it is not a mirage in the desert. All this pretense that it does not exist has to make way for a pragmatic new policy. We have to exorcise the ghost of Mahathir’s rabid anti-Jewish ghost or we will get nowhere. We are not helping the Palestinians if we do not talk and walk with the Israelis. That does not mean we agree with their inhumanity to the Palestinians.

Work with very influential American Jewish interests

We will get all the support and backing of the very influential American Jewish interests, and will be able to engage Israel on a number of critical international and humanitarian issues, including the Palestinian conundrum. I think we should give this serious consideration. The Jews are anxious to cultivate us.

I recall in 2006 while serving with the UN in New York I was invited to deliver a talk at a conference in Jerusalem. Despite attempts to deny that I was a Malaysian official, they saw me as such, and not as a special UN adviser who I really was.

They were delighted that for the first time in history that they had a ranking “Malaysian official” addressing a public meeting in Israel. They were not particularly interested in what I had to say about good governance, and the vital importance of fighting corruption.

By all means get close to Washington but...

They wanted to know why Malaysia did not recognise Israel and, yet at the same time our government leaders saw nothing wrong in depositing huge sums of money in Israeli banks. I had to tell them I could not answer their questions as I was not a member of the government of Malaysia. Mahathir may care to comment when he chooses to remember this bizarre aspect of his glorious administration.

By all means get close to Washington, Najib, but not at any cost.

*Senator Tunku Abdul Aziz is one of the prime movers in setting up Transparency International Malaysia, in happier times was regarded by Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi as “one man (who) was able to harness his personal passion and deep commitment to the values of ethics and integrity, give it a larger purpose and meaning, and turn it into a force to transform society for the better.” Why then was he left out of the MACC Advisory Group? He is regarded as being too outspoken for comfort and, therefore, difficult to handle.

  1. Have you lately looked at our Malaysian passport? The only country which we cannot visit is Israel? It is glaringly obvious and an indignity to us as free individuals to travel without restrictions on God’s Earth. What nonsense is that given the fact that we live in an open world, one without borders. If we can go to Timbaktu, why can’t we visit Tel Aviv!

Is it not time for us to recognise Israel, and openly do business with Israel businessmen, tap Israeli intellectual capital and technological savvy and leverage our relations with them to deal with the Palestinian conundrum and other humanitarian issues? This is good for our expanding business overseas with spin offs for our domestic economy.

It is timely for the Najib administration to review our policy in the Middle East, and recognise the reality that Israel is here to stay and it is in our interest to engage Israelis; it is being bullhead and sentimental on our part by persisting with isolating them. Engagement should be our policy.

Like Tunku Aziz, I too have good friends who are Jewish and Israelis. I studied with them when I was a graduate student in Washington DC and found them to be very smart, dedicated, tough and hardworking people. With apologies to none, I admire and respect them for their achievements and innovation. –Din Merican

  2. Bravo Tunku Abdul Aziz. You told it like it is. Thank you for your courage and integrity. If 1-Malaysia is to make it, it’s in persons like you. Your heart and your mind are connected as One. This is what integrity is about. Speak your heart with your mind. Express your thoughts with a passionate heart.

When I read your writings they always give me HOPE and I am refreshed with joy and a love for this life. You have made us all Malaysians more than any slogans. I can only say that without you we are lesser.

Bless you and peace be with you.
    _________
I agree with you, truetruth4ever. My friend and colleague, Tunku Abdul Aziz, is not afraid to call a spade a spade.–Din Merican

  3. Clear mind, sincere heart, true to self, true to TRUTH, that’s what you are Tunku Abdul Aziz.

It’s amazing that Malaysia continues to ostracise only one nation in this world. We shall probably be allowed to travel to Space and the Moon but not Israel. This demonstrates Malaysia is still unable to comprehend the Middle Eastern issues which Mahathir did say that he could not understand why the Israelites and the Arabs persist in their fightings. If one reads the history of the Israelites and the Arabs from the Bible and the Koran with a open mind one will comprehend the fightings that have gone on for centuries.

Well, then again prejudice and politicising is the politician’s game. Politicians pitch enmity to make themselves look good. But does a Malaysia that bar Malaysians from visiting Israel benefit? Is Najib and that includes Mahathir, entering Israel via back doors and side doors of the White House?

Why not open the doors so that there is true diplomacy rather than via intermediaries thereby paying commissions to solicit entries?

Israel existed before most if not all the nations of this world. The Arabs are the “step-brother” in fact. From Isaac and Ismael came Israel and the Arabs. The endless squabbles and bloodshed that went on in the Middle East are inherent in that Abrahamic family.

These were family fights which Malaysia is taking sides. We lack diplomacy or know not what we do and in ignorance bend the rules to suit our political agendas. I do not think for a moment Israel bothers even if Malaysia allow visits to Israel.

If ever Najib is to make a true and authentic mark during his term of office as PM, its very simple and small – remove the word “Israel” stamped in our Passport barring visit there and to allow it to be endorsed by Israel when Malaysians visit Israel. Why are we so irrationally afraid that Malaysians visit Israel. Would the Chinese and Indians become converted to Judaism or become indoctrinated by Israelite politics? Not at all. So where lies the rationale of barring visit to Israel?

When I was younger, I have in my passport a list of other countries listed as barred, which were mainly “Communistic” countries including China and several Middle European countries. Now even communist countries are open for visit but not Israel which is non-communist. I have no desire to visit Israel but wonder why the Government of Malaysia is paranoid about this nation that has done us no harm.

I can only conclude that Mahathirism is akin to Nazism leading to the barring of visit to Israel as the “Final Solution” a term that the Nazis used in the Holocaust. http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10005151

Is Malaysia part of that “Final Solution”? Anyway Israel is still that Final Country that we are barred from whereas we are allowed to go to other “terrorist” infected and infested countries.

Is 1Malaysia to mean there is still 1 country in the world that Malaysians cannot visit? Let me say that when I was studying in the UK I had a classmate who was a Jew and he was very disciplined, hospitable and kind, not at all the picture we are indoctrinated here in Malaysia to believe.

Just like Tunku Abdul Aziz ia a Malay and a Muslim, he is the most rational, logical, righteous person that I am proud to have in Malaysia. I have read in his writings from time to time. This again shows that we cannot generalise about Israel or Malays. Take it one at a time giving merit to where there is truth.

After all is said, if Malaysia continues to be backward its by choice and if by 2020 we are still backward it’s because Politicians lack magnanimity and a big-heartedness. Narrow agendas with tunnel vision of predecessors are made the only way.

NO WAY Malaysia is going to make the dream of Mahathir by 2020 a reality if it persecutes and ostracise. Najib can go to Timbuktu and we shall be the same. I am not belittling Timbuktu (in Mali) or Najib our PM. Wherever you be, unless the heart and the mind are integrated like Tunku Abdul Aziz I regret to say that we are better off in Disneyland and be Mickey Mouse. Bolehland is a Theme Park of expensive third rate puppets without heart mind, soul and substance and it’s no fun seeing the puppeteers pulling strings or cables with Obama.
    ________
Thanks, hisarmour, for this well argued commentary. If we continue to allow this Mahathir to spew his prejudices and bitterness on the Malaysian body politik, we are nuts. No one in UMNO-BN dares to tell him to shut up and the mainstream media is giving him space and attention. People visiting his blog give kudos and etc. I have been a Mahathir supporter before and now that he is talking sheer nonsense, I will say it here again: “Mahathir, please shut up. Your days are done and we have enough of you”.—Din Merican

  4. Din, I think what you mean is that “..it is …an indignity to us NOT to (be allowed) to…travel..”

Just a few thoughts on this article:

I understand that at one time there were restrictions on travel by Malaysians to Hong Kong as well. But it is always politics. The US government, I believe, has for years forbidden its citizens free travel to Cuba and at one time even telephone calls had to be routed through Canada.

The spending of large sums for a photo shoot fits quite well with our current politics. How much did we pay to “send” a Malaysian to space? And for what purpose?

The question of relations with the Zionist State is interesting for countries like ours who have of late decided to be more Arab than the Arabs. In 1976, while I was in Amman I decided to take a drive westwards and soon found myself on the road that leads to the bridge
that connects Jordan to Israel. I saw a few dozen lorries laden with goods coming into Jordan from the “other” side. On returning to the hotel I enquired at the front desk if there was any trade between the two sides. Somewhat surprised by my ignorance the clerk replied : “Of course there is sir. There always has been”. This was 1976…

  5. With all due respect, you said if we have relations with Israel it will give us leverage for the Israeli-Palestinian crisis and its humanitarian issues, but did it work with Turkey, Egypt and Jordan? I too have jewish friends who happened to be for the peace between the Israel and Palestine. From what we have seen, the current government of Israel doesn’t seem to be too interested in the peace talks. Just look to what they would do to the left-wing professor who supported the peace process or their bitter relationship with J-street pac.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2008/09/israel-attempts.html

  6. “Bolehland is a Theme Park of expensive third rate puppets without heart mind, soul and substance…” hisamour

A theme park of cheap discarded puppets with an obstinate mind and a heartless soul. That’s more accurate….

  7. If having relationship with Israel means it’ll give us leverage for the Israel-Palestine crisis, does that mean having one with Hamas will do the same thing too?

  8. “Have you lately looked at our Malaysian passport? The only country which we cannot visit is Israel?” Din Merican

It has been that way for as long as I can remember. The others have dropped off the list and no longer meet UMNO’s criteria of a ‘rogue’ country.

You can still visit Israel. It is just that when you return to your country of origin or your home country, your privilege will most certainly be withdrawn after your interview with Special Branch. But if you don’t return, you could still have the privilege that comes with an international passport until the day when it comes up for renewal. Hopefully by then you would have acquired some kind of status in the country in which you currently reside.

  9. I have my doubts on Tunku Aziz’s intellectual integrity. Perhaps he can tell us about his views on Israel and Jews without hedging. Should Malaysia have diplomatic relations with Israel irrespective of the stand taken by OIC?.

In one of his previous postings I read about his praising sky high about the virtue of having Bhasa Malaysia as a medium of instruction in schools and it being a bonding language for all races. Can I ask the good Professor where did he send his children and grand children for secondary education and beyond – to local national schools or English medium private schools in Malaysia or abroad? You can’t preach something for plebeians and practise something else for you and your family.

  10. Tok Cik, thank you for adding to the bankrupted credentials of the puppets.

Say what we may, the puppeteers continue to try to pull a fast one. This nation needs men of integrity like Tunku Abdul Aziz or Raja Petra (RPK), men of stature by virture of their courage, integrity and their true humanity, without fear or favour. Such men are just a voice in the wilderness. The government will want their heads on a silver platter which is why RPK disappeared from the scene and remain still a voice in this wilderness. Truth is never welcomed in this world.

Unless men like Tunku Aziz and Raja Petra, men of nobility and stature speak up, and continue to more than speak up, the average man is just a hog or a dog in the eyes of the Umnoputras. Throw them some crumbs and they will wag their tails or roll in the mud, like the MCA.

Society thrive on lies, exaggerations and falsities. Newspapers make big bucks on this daily putting on the front pages speeches by professional liars we all call “POLITICIANS”, and spinning these lies long enough till these become pseudo-truths.

All the hype and sloganising of politicians only leave us all deceived and made fools of. Being angry with them make us spent and washed out. Meanwhile the general milieu remains unresolved and we are all brow beaten and shackled by propaganda and restrictions to meet their whims and fancies.

Any thinking person will know that there is no peace possible between Israel and the Arabs surrounding them. Do some homework and read up how the two races and nations came about. Even “Che Det” failed in this history lesson in his posting http://chedet.co.cc/chedetblog/2009/06/obamas-cairo-speech.html#more

Israel-Arab conflict is a feud between brothers and we who are not even near them should be better off taking care of our own household in loving our own brothers of differing race and religion. If we can’t do even this what is the point of taking sides in the conflicts of other nations. Its just an escapism and diversion like a mother trying to distract a child in tantrum by pointing to other events failing which a threat is put in the form of a rod. The child may pause for a moment but soon realise it’s just a ploy and carry on wailing even more enthusiastically to the chagrin of the mother.

“Cheque Book Diplomacy” = “Malaysia Boleh!”
Management gurus have said that a problem is not a problem if it can be solved with a cheque book. This nation has taken the road to perdition with this “Malaysia Boleh” slogan. Malaysia is entrenched in ‘… the time-honoured Malaysian culture of corruption, to that offensive practice euphemistically referred to as “cheque book diplomacy”’.

With this “1Malaysia” label it’s yet another hard-sell of the “bankrupt” ideolgies to the Rakyat.

    The opposite is the truth.
One needs not propose unity if we are not divided. One needs not speak of peace if there is no war. One would not eat if one is full. One needs not preach love if hatred is not existent. Only a con man will say he is cash rich. Rich people always say they have no money.

Now I observe Tunku Abdul Aziz is not all these.
He speaks truth as true as it can be. I see his truth is the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Don’t forget that we are not in the USA but in Bolehland. There is freedom OF speech and freedom BEFORE speech but there is no freedom AFTER speech. Being in the opposition party, and vocalising about Mahathir indeed is “…outspoken… and difficult to handle.” Nevertheless I trust this man Tunku Andul Aziz to my third generation but not Mahathir even in my generation. Why? This man tells the truth. I can handle any man but not a dishonest man.
I can take the bitter truth but not sweet toxic lies.
No man is too difficult if he is an honest man.
    Only LIARS are impossible.

So Tunku Abdul Aziz, please speak your mind and we true Malaysians will love and cherish you to the third generation…and beyond. Forgive us if we are not as articulate in our appreciation of your stand for TRUTH.
    Peace be with you!

  11. Yo K.Das, you’ve made a good point, but i think Tunku Aziz is being quite candid in this.
The way i see it – is that the way both Be-end and Pr are playing with a very ‘boomerang-eable’ subject. Jibbo ain’t got the digestive abilities to have diplomatic relations with Israel. There must be a ‘paragidm’ (DSAI’s moniker) shift of thinking amongst the Malays after years of indoctrination by Octo.

I think in general, Malaysia must have diplomatic relations with Israel – not so much with a view of ‘pressure’, but as cornerstone of engagement in trade, education, technology, etc. If we can’ve diplomats in blatantly genocidal Naypidaw (Burma), there is very little reason not to extend the ‘courtesy’ Israel. Anything else is absolute hypocrisy.

Did someone mention Turkey? Haha, they are ‘strategic’ allies of Israel, against the houris of Arabia.
Iran? Persians need to be decoupled from this conversation, unless there is a substantial population of 12′er Shias running around.

  12. The meeting with Obama, it is just a show for the “orang kampung” from Besut to Pekan only….

Knowledge about how the world works and how Yankees works is another thing, not many can comprehend…ask any of the Young Turks in UMNO/MIC/MCA

So let Jibon play his games with OUR Money, we will make him pay pay every bit of it BIG time! very single cent with interest…you can rob, rape, fornicate, cheat, lie & deny now…

Your days are really numbered ….

  13. I think it’s a good idea that Malaysia befriend Israel. In the event of a US invasion of Iran, we should support that. Iran possess a threat to the free world and therefore we must not let them arm themselves with nuclear. Israel, on the other hand, though equipped with nuclear weapons do not pose a threat to the middle-east. The Jewish is merely claiming their lands that were confiscated from them by the Arabs. I’m glad Malaysia would recognize Israel and its rights to exist. Maybe a support from more muslim countries will signal to the Palestinians that their aggression towards the Israelis are a lost cause and that they are losing the support of their muslim brothers.

  14. Malaysians can visit Israel (and many have) just ask Israeli immigration not to stamp your passport !
    _________
Of course, you can do that. But that is not what I am talking about. It is the stupidity of it all. The Cabinet should review this matter so that Malaysians can be free to travel anywhere in the world legally. I am allowed to go to North Korea, but I won’t visit this Hermit Kingdom. It is my choice. I think I should good to visit Israel–and that is a choice I make too– and meet Israelis to know what makes them thick and why they are doing so well economically, despite attempts by some Arab regimes to “finish them off”. As citizens we should be free to choose.–Din Merican

  15. Salam.
I think M’sia must not befriend with Israel.
Israel is not an honest friend. Ask Turkey and the countries which Israel had faked their passport, Australia, UK, etc.
If U say M’sia can help by having diplomatic relations with Israel, dude. Not true. They are willing to betray their own friends to achieve what they want. They even had broke 140++ UN Resolutions. What more to expect?
The Israelis only took back their land confiscated by Arabs? Read your History books first. Muslims have been there for hundreds of years while Jews only lived there for about 200++ years. If U want Israel to get their land back then why don’t U (Chinese and Indians) go back to your country (India & China) bcoz that’s where your ancestors came from hundreds of years ago?
U said that Israel is no threat to the World if they have nukes but if Iran have nukes they r the real threat? This is one real joke!
Israel have used depleted Uranium bombs in Lebanon and Gaza. They used UN banned weapons such as Phosphorus bombs. They are the real threat to the world. They have Mossad, conducting spies even on USA and attacked US Warship USS Liberty to drag USA to fight their own war.
And what makes U so sure that Israel, even though posses nukes they only used it if they have too but if Iran have it they’ll destroy Israel right away? This is shit. U know Iran won’t commit national suicide by nuking Israel as USA and all Europe will destroy Iran. Besides, there are not sufficient prove to accuse Iran that way. Iran signed NPT and has the rights to develop nukes peacefully. USA dun want Iran to have nukes tech bcoz it has potential to emerge as a new regional power.
If U say that Iran’s president want to wipe Israel of the map U r just victims of stupid media. They say Israel needs a regime change not “wipe Israel off the map”.
U know what. If M’sia looks to Israel to develop its economy, Israel may use economic sanctions against M’sia and that M’sia would bow and agree to what Israel will do in the future even though its against UN. M’sia can look to somewhere else.
I know M’sia is not a Muslim country, and its a country for everyone. But! M’sia is not a country which support murder of innocent people and oppression. M’sia dun even support Islamic extremism and terrorism. In short, M’sia believes in humanity itself. That’s M’sian image on world stage.
The policy to isolate Israel is just like what we did to Apartheid state in Africa. As long as Israel dun change its policy towards Palestinians, stop razing Palestinian houses illegally, M’sia won’t move from her position. But history has show, that Israel did not have the interest to stop its policy.
And some of U say if Iran is attacked by USA, M’sia should support it. Dude, dun think Iran is easy as Iraq. Dun simply hold the fact that Iran’s weapons are obsolete and that USA could finish them in a matter of a week. Iran have a strong weaponry industries. 70 million Iranians, no matter what their political agenda is will unite under Iran’s flag if USA attacks. And guess what, Shiite muslims are very different compared to Sunnis. They are willing to fight to the death. Even some Sunni faction fight under their banner. Not to mention vast Iranian missile arsenal.
Iran holds one choke point (straits of Hormuz just like Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore control straits of Malacca) which 40% of oil tankers pass through. It has 3 effective subs which can close the strait effectively. Guess what? If Iran close the strait even for a week, oil prices skyrocketed to about USD500 per barrel. And about RM40-50 per liter. And that nobody can afford the prices, goods transported by trucks and airplanes won’t have gasoline and economies will plunge steeply to a stand still. Middle East will be on fire. Israel and USA will have to use nukes. I can’t imagine things that’ll happen after that. Maybe Pakistan or China will intervene as nuke radiation kill their civilians.

  16. Dont judge people by what we heard. Read the correct history text not sided any party. The world are for us human to enjoy discover and live. Be friend with all dont be so “everthing is mine alone ” Our God, Our religion etc. Look at bigger scale of the world. All are creation of God.

  17. bolehland should unlock and open the gates to israel, just like others did. all these years we have been hearing from 1 side story, why not try to hear from neutral side and dont need to judge, remember only God judge. all these years we have been very well educated in believing in on 1 or 2 political persons opinion, why dont we make our own? thanks din, timmy, hisarmour, isa, tku abd aziz and others who wants the gates to be open.
    shalom!
