Art Harun on the Allah Issue

Art Harun’s Take on the Allah Issue and its Aftermath

The controversy surrounding the usage of “Allah” by non-Muslims, particularly the Christians, in Malaysia continues to rage even as at the time of writing this article. The Malaysian Insider just reported that a ninth church — this time in Kota Tinggi, Johore — had been vandalised.

The year 2009 was about to end when Yang Ariff Justice Lau Bee Lan held that the word “Allah” may be used by the Herald in its newspaper. That decision has almost redefined the phrase “ending the year with a bang.”

Viewed with the benefit of hindsight, there were of course political opportunity loss on the part of the Barisan Nasional. In a land where everything from the slaughtering of cows for distribution to the poor and needy to the building of a free trade zone are perfect fodders for politics, the Allah issue was never far from being one as well.

In the last half of 2009, I actually thought that the Prime Minister was in the political driving seat. He was in control. His 1 Malaysia concept and sloganeering, although leaving much to be desired from the view point of the urbanites, was gaining support from the heartland. The Chinese and Indian supports were slowly coming back to him and his government despite the impotence and lameness of the two most important protagonists which were supposed to represent the two races within the government, namely the MCA and MIC respectively.

The public relations machinations of the government were working full steam and in overdrive. The Prime  Minister and his men were all over the place, winning nods of approvals from the people on the street.

In the meantime, power base in UMNO was being broaden. And his hard line approach towards the opposition was well received within the UMNO circle, especially at the grass root level. The Perak power grab, orchestrated and executed by him, although crude and almost unrefined, served to cement the belief among UMNO members that in Datuk Seri Najib Razak, UMNO has a powerful leader who is not afraid to use his power for the benefit of UMNO. Gone were the days of the lembik leadership that they had under the stewardship of Tun Abdullah Badawi.

And so, despite various issues ranging from Teoh Beng Hock’s death at the MACC state head office to the PKFZ debacle, the Prime Minister was looking good.

On the corporate side, the Prime Minister, in not too long a time has also managed to straighten out the various important agencies and government linked companies to his liking. Top editors of major UMNO linked newspapers were replaced. The state mass media was in good hands in Minister Rais Yatim.

Khazanah Holdings was in control and ever willing to toe the line. The EPU was dismantled thereby getting rid of old and unwanted elements. PETRONAS was a bit more difficult to deal with as proven by the fact that the PM’s favoured nominee for a board seat was rejected not once but twice. No matter what, the PM later managed to get what he wanted and Encik Omar Ong now gets his board seat.

So, everything was going accordance to plan.

In the meantime, the Pakatan Rakyat was in utter disarray. This was a party who perfected the art of shooting one’s own foot, not once, not twice but continuously like they were using an Uzi instead of a revolver.

They had Hassan Ali and gang running riot against their own leadership. They also had Zulkifli Noordin wanting to amend the Federal Constitution to make Islamic law the highest law of the land. Then they had Wee Chee Keong creating havoc. In the PKR front, Azmin Ali, Zaid Ibrahim, Jeffrey Kitingan and Anwar Ibrahim were locking horns. Then PAS lost a by-election in Negeri Sembilan. All hell broke loose.

The PR was losing ground. Everything was going haywire. In PAS, apart from the Hassan Ali and Nasa factor, there was also the Tuan Guru Nik Aziz controversy. That prompted a special muktamar to sort out various issues. Due to the shenanigans of Hassan Ali and cohorts, non-Muslims support for PAS was fast disappearing. It looked like it was  difficult for PAS to regain the trust of non-Muslims after the hard line approach displayed by Hassan Ali and gang.

Within all these controversies surrounding the PR, the Prime Minister could continue to concentrate at rebuilding the support base for UMNO. And he was relishing the prospect. Surveys by independent pollsters actually showed that supports for the Prime Minister and his 1 Malaysia concept was actually improving with time. Malaysia apparently was warming up to him.

However, he made a mistake. And a big one that turned out to be. The Allah issue was brewing in the Court. And on the last day of 2009, the issue exploded.

In hindsight, the Allah issue could have been used by the Prime Minister to score even more points, especially among the non-Malays. Had the PM thrown his weight in support of the Christians while at the same time used the massive public relation machinations to explain the real issues to the Malays and to pacify them, then the PM would have killed two birds with just a single stone.

However, that was not to be. The PM and the Home Minister had chosen to appease the Malays by initially taking a loose stand against those who were planning to demonstrate in various mosques around KL after the Friday prayer. At the last minute, the Home Minister appeared to have changed his mind and came out with another indecision and almost lame position. He decided to leave it to the police to decide, when in fact, the police came under his Ministry!

The move backfired spectacularly when churches were torched. As of now, the political damage to both the PM and the Home Minister, as well as to the government, is almost irreversible.

By pandering to the hard line Malays, the PM, Home Minister and the government was not winning any new support. That is because the hard line Malays (or ultra Malays) have always supported UMNO anyway. So there was not going to be any change in the support of Umno or the government by adopting the stand against the usage of Allah by the Christians.

In contrast, if the PM had taken an opposite stand on the issue, new support from the Christians would have been forthcoming, giving a new dimension to the concept of 1 Malaysia which the PM is selling with absolute vigour nowadays. Apart from the Christians, non-Malays of other faiths would also see the PM’s action as a sign of accommodation for themselves. And this will give the PM a consequential support from this group as well.

At the same time, the hard line UMNO supporters would not withdraw their supports for the PM. Any splinter group from within UMNO who might be unhappy for the PM’s decision in that event could be persuaded and coaxed through the massive state controlled mass media, which include Bernama TV, RTM, TV3, TV7, TV9, NST, Malay Mail, Utusan Malaysia  and the Star.

The PM and the government would be swimming in this great tidal of supports. Alas, things were not to be. Instead now, we have a situation where supports from the hard line Malays remain unchanged. And the PM can forget about supports from the Christians and the non-Malays of other faiths. The Malay urbanites on the other hand would continue to be critical of the PM and the government.

The Allah issue is really an opportunity loss for the Prime Minister, UMNO, BN and the government. On the other side of the fence, the Pakatan Rakyat, and that includes PAS, is coming out smelling like roses on a hot spring day. There is not much guessing which has to be done to know why. The BN is back to square one.

  1. The biggest loss would probably their “fixed deposit” Sabah and Sarawak. The East Malaysian Christians and even the non-Christians including those who had taken a back seat in politics in the past are finally woken up. There is much anger among the rural populace who hold their prayers in BM. A blessing in disguise as it turned out.

  2. Art Harun, always the best.

The man never fails to amaze me…the clarity of thought and the simplicity of delivery.

Way to go, Art, way to go!!!

  3. Yes Art, my thoughts exactly. (Frankly I was debating with myself in the shower after reading your article that I poured shampoo over my body sponge instead of shower gel!!)

I kind of expected Najib to do exactly what he did, it’s almost too easy to predict his every move when incidents like this arise. And you are right in your analysis of this most recent incident. I think it IS going to be extremely difficult to reverse the situation now. It amost confirms the hypothesis that Najib will be the downfall of UMNO.

  4. We disagree that Najib was doing well on the perception front. Instead it was the Pakatan who was doing bad, really bad as unsolvable problems after problems came , exposing Anwar’s achilles heel like a lost child and his surprising impotence. Najib with his fatal rosmah-made baggage will soon be history as the cunning Brutus position themselves for the final curtain, say before the year is out ?

  5. This outrage felt by some at the decision of the court to allow the use of the word ‘Allah’ by Bahasa-speaking Indonesians is symptomatic of a larger struggle both by the Muslim leadership to safeguard the constitutional status of Islam as defined by the country’s federal constitution of 1957 and by the religious minorities to be able to practice their religion or religions in peace and without intervention from the state. So for us to make fun or make light of the issue is to miss the wood from the trees such as when some think a group of men in pin-striped suits sitting behind a round table could solve the issue. It is not over the origin of the word ‘Allah’ or about how the Egyptians had been using the word to refer to God long before Prophet Mohammad. It is really about the right of the minority in Malaysia to practice their religion which is safeguarded under Article 11 of our Federal Malaysian Constitution. This Article clearly safeguards the right of non-Malays and non-Muslims to practice their own religion in peace, manage their own affairs and without harassment from the authorities.

But let us not forget. It is also part of a larger struggle for religious freedom not just of the non-Malay minorities but also of the Bahasa speaking Malays who would like to be able to choose their own faith. Article 11 of the federal constitution states very clearly that Malays do not have the freedom to choose their own religion.

Pakatan leaders have so far avoided, weaved and ducked to use boxing terminology and as a result a small segment of the Malay urban population who choose to believe in Christ are without representation.

  6. Yep, PR’s self footshooting with Uzis, painful but not fatal.
But what the heck, these bumno flurs have planted a ‘Fat Boy’ fissile device on self destruct mode on themselves with all these godly manueverings. Very soon we will see the ultras going at the jugulars of the moderates, and vice versa.
Why? The have a conniving, ineffectual general (and cousin keris wielder) without the cojones; and an impatient Octo-linked deputy who is getting real pissed that things aren’t going as they should be.
    1Malaise with 2 or more bumnos, imagine…
Meanwhile, bro. Anwar has to bear up with pain, as they try their darndest to break up PR and incarcerate him. No early elections…

  7. UMNO is in need of a political strategist with the caliber of the likes of Karl Rove. This drum beating of a narrow form of Malay nationalism is something that may explode in their faces.

  8. 19 Jan., Najib will be going to India for a state visit.
    You know why?
My advice is, PI Bala must be very careful! Najib is going to meet Mr Singh and seek the Indian Govt’s help to get Bala, at any cost.
Najib will do anything to save his aching arse!

  9. samsaimon, diplomatic protocol doesn’t allow for personal ass aches. Behind the masks ‘diplomatic’ handshakes, hugs and smiles, there is a lot of angst within the Indian Govt about the way things are going for our Malaysian Indian community (Hindraf, temples, schools, poverty etc.). Read about it in the Hindustan Times and other news agencies.

Remember, dear leader Jibby is meeting Manmohan Singh – will they pray together in the name of Allah? Deep embarassment for our diplomatic community. Previously we were merely pariahs for voting with Cuba and Venezuela in the UN, now we are dung!

  10. Now both sides of the camp are counting on the East to deliver , while hoodlums on the other side of the terrain continiously remained fixated on wearing hate caps daring the other to trespass the others turf.

The highest bidder is certainly most welcome but with a few conditions specifically laid down by ‘sogit’ laws before the bidding starts.

In the meantime rant all you like, you derange homosapiens! And this applies to you too , New yorker Bean.

  11. Me a member of the Russian heavy metal rock group ‘Homo Sapiens”?? Naaah ….

  12. No one was trying to convert any muslims. The bn govt. saw the allah issue as a good opportunity to once again divide and rule to continue enjoying the fruits of corruption. This has to stop for the sake of the suffering poor in rural malaysia especially malays, in these days of rising prices.

  13. The UMNO Malay muslims and those ultra Malay NGOs should go and read their Quran very carefully on this ALLAH issue.

Najib and his racially divisive cousin who was made Home Minister so that he can legalise his racist policies are on the WRONG side of the holy Quran.

They should go and read THIS VERSE (click HERE) in the Holy Quran, its in Arabic, romanised Arabic, in Malaysia’s Bahasa Malaysia and in different English translations.

Najib and Hishamuddin and all those pariah UMNO Malays, the ultra Malays, the members of ABIM, and people like Akramsyah Sanusi and his mentor, the Sufi Muslim blogger Mahaguru58 by the name of Zainol Abideen, should ask for ALLAH’s forgiveness right now in their prayers 5 times a day for the next one month, and do repentance work by increasing their zakat payment by 50 % for the next 6 months. Otherwise, ALLAH will NEVER NEVER FORGIVE THEM and will deny them a place in Paradise with the 72 Virgins.

” Oh, Muslim Malays, Why Have You Forsaken ME, for I am your Protector and your One and the Only Allah who gave Mankind the Holy Quran, the Al-Kitab of the Jews and the Christians?…”

  14. Dear Din & Art, it’s Murphy’s law at work and fortunately for us (opposition minded rakyat) it hit UMNO and BN at the most inopportune moment and on issues that would do the most damage too. Murphy’s law states that “If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong”. Mr PM! Brace for more thing to go wrong (Perak legal MB battle, maybe???).

  15. Menyalak-er, hope you’re right.
But to these people, isn’t money is God?

  16. Heheheh, samsaimon, right…., only for bumno.
The dep. PM Moo, is having very, very different thoughts about this Allah thingy and says that there is no such thing as ‘total freedom in religion’ (speaking ‘near’ Oxford)! Can’t imagine any nonMuslim voting BeEnd in future!

PAS on the other hand, with their Quran-centric religious scholars, is insisting that the Abrahamic religions can all use Allah. Bro Anwar and Zaid too have come out with very strong statements.

Yes Nick, both Murphy’s law and Occam’s razor can be used. Nothing will be settled by court decisions, because this is not a case of ‘copyrights’. The damage is irrepairable.
